Years ago in the early 2000s we used Rust-Oleum to paint our race cars. Our normal paint store was closed for a week and we had to have the car ready for the weekend . So I went to Walmart and picked up a gallon or international red and sprayed the car. We were so surprised just how nice it turned out we ended up doing 6 all together. Even now the 2 that are in the field still look good and with a little wax would shine like it did yrs ago. You would be surprised how good the paint will turn out when you do a good job on prep. Awesome video
Just an excellent job all around! Really enjoyed this. Reminds me of being younger and messing around with different paints and primers in the garage. Good times
I do body/paint work and detailing at a used car dealership and this video impressed me. I would never have expected rust paint to have turned out so well. I was especially surprised to see that the clear didn't react with the rust paint. I was expecting to see major wrinkling and cracking but you guys must have timed that clear application just right. Great job!
Thank you! Yes we didn't want to see it react that way either haha, because it can! But we have found, for us at least, that we let it set up for long enough to stick, but not react when we do the clear. We could have waited longer and done a scuff before the clear, but we wanted it done haha
I like what you guys did there! I would add that, if you’re like me and not a professional painter and without professional facilities, skills, or tools … I have found that if you are reaching for as professional looking results as possible, a light wet sanding between each coat with about 1500-2000 grit does an amazing job of getting rid of any dust, bugs, orange peel, and slight “fisheyes” that get into the wet paint and that usual present frustration with amateur level work. Granted, for just an old daily driver, it could be overkill, but if you have the extra time and you are looking to challenge yourself to do the best paint job you can crank out while on a budget, wet sanding makes a lot of difference and adds very little to the overall cost. The sanding will also give the next coat something to bond to and increase the odds that the clear won’t peel after some time in the sun.
I'm just learning and I've seen alot of people say how it's very important to walk the side from end to end because that whole "spraying a half panel, then spraying a half door" will cause tiger striping and unprofessional looking results. I noticed in this video they sprayed small areas rather than entire panels from side to side. Is that not a problem? Ice scoured the comments and I can't find anyone saying it here. But in every other video I watch, seems like dozens of people say that walking it all the way down is the only way to go. 🤔?
Hey, yes for sure if you have the time and want to go that bit further it would make a difference. If we let the blue cure fully we would have had to sand before the clear or it wouldn't hold up. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment!
@inthelandofmorethansmall7582 Using solid colors, "stripes" would appear from dry spray. Metallics may end up striping by doing that AND it's a single stage paint, like the rustoleum. If it's a metallic base coat color, this won't be a problem for a moderately experienced painter. The base coat would then need to be clear coated. If you spray a true candy or pearl coat (3 stage, pearl over the base coat color before clear) you would definitely want to walk the entire vehicle. But your overlap would contribute more to striping than anything. Consistent application (speed, distance, overlap) is crucial
The guy talking about sanding is right about everything he mentioned and should be applied if you want a decent looking paint job. Especially wet sanding the clear then cut and buff for the final. Also an inexperienced painter should be concerned about things such as runs, proper technique and body posture and maintaining the same distance from nozzle to surface being painted and air hose control while actually trying to paint or more importantly clearing the car( you don't want to be tripping over things and hose while trying to shoot clear) also when new striping of any kind regardless of color is something to watch and for different reasons but the two likely will be improper coverage and dry streaks in either base or clear due to how you have the gun set up and how you are overlap ing each pass. Pay attention to how much air flow your gun is using to throw the paint. If the air to paint ratio is high you will get dry spots vis versa and runs become a problem. Also prep good and pro tip always before you start working and sanding use dewaxer and degreaser every where you are working people don't think about how any wax or grease present at time of sanding will just embed all that into the work area and then wondering why the clear coat is fisheyed or something. If you don't walk the entire vehicle that's fine if you just use the body lines of the car and where they break/transition into another for where you start and stop. The difference in how the light gets reflected will hide where you start stop and even doing blends. Last thing is to pull tape and paper while wet because doing after everything dries increases the chances that you'll pull some of the paint and clear off while trying to remove tape from gaskets and trim.
They are so good and reliable! (most reliable pontiac out there haha) my in-laws have a matrix, the reliability/gas mileage is what made me look for a matrix/vibe.
I did this with the Fire Red he showed early on. I used paint thinner to make it spray well then did clear. 6 years later, it's completely failed. Flaked off starting within 2 years of sunshine. I hope they have better luck. But I was using only materials that were free to me.
Hi from a province over in Manitoba! Colour looks great. These are super cars. Worth fixing up and keeping on the road. Thanks for the cheap ideas for a great paint job.
I had two Pontiac Vibes, they were just so amazing ! Best cars I ever had ! I now have a 2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid and I love it so much , I’m a die hard Toyota fan
I almost bought a Vibe, but found a low mileage Escort instead, in dark magenta so I won't have to paint it. I think your blue is a bit too pale for my taste, and also think your current black wheels are better than any of the colors you mentioned, though I like bright colors including on wheels, so matching blue? purple? orange? green? magenta? I also have a white Dodge pickup that I may be painting. Purple and yellow? The white is so bland. I was inspired when a friend bought a primer Metro with purple window tint, and painted it yellow.
Good tip for the reducer is to use something similar to the paint. Solid the paint is Enamel then use an enamel reducers. If paint is Urethane then use a urethane reducer and so on. Painted cars for a couple decades. Also I saw someone mention good idea using the same brand reducers as the clear coat. That is a good idea too. Staying in the same brand is always good.
Amazing guys....just the content I've been looking for. Getting my custom Elf Camino (90 chevy sprint ) ready to paint and you two have nailed it! I'm gonna use Tremclad as in your video using Fire Red with a bit of Yellow to orange it up a bit. Thanks for the excellent tutorial, I can hardly wait. Weather is warming up here in B.C. so will soon be getting at it.
Ah thank you very much! I know the sprint, very cool! Just do a test mix and test spray maybe. We mixed the full quarts and got lucky. We probably should have tested smaller amounts haha
Easiest and most cost effective way for a color change in my opinion. I've painted so many cars with alkyd enamels. It's a nice, durable finish and if you cut and buff you can get it shining like a mirror. I actually had a car I painted with Rustoleum sit outside with a tarp duct-taped over the missing convertible top for close to 3 years. I pulled the tarp, cleaned and polished the car and it looked as good as the day I sprayed it.
That's a solid result from a cheaper style paint. My recommendation for the rims is a satin black or a matte gunmetal color. If it's affordable, get a larger rim and a tire with a lower profile sidewall. Maybe a 40 - or 45 series style tire.
Thank you very much. I do like the idea of a matte gunmetal. I already have alloy rims, but they aren't big. The car is all about MPGs for me. I have a small lightweight rim and will put a fuel efficient tire on it. But you are right, a bigger rim would be sick!
Haha, That's great! My dad used to tell me about how he and his brother would work on beetles swapping things back and forth to have a good running one!
I agree, you guys nailed it. Amazing before and after transformation. I think once you clay it, buff it and add some ceramic coating to the paint it will look even better. Nice job on the plastic cladding as well which made the paint pop even more. A+ job guys!
Thank you! Ya I was thinking about doing some of that as a spring clean up and get the alloy rims I have powder coated at the same time with summer tires.
@@RustedRidesdefinitely a bronze or copper color wheels would look great with that blue. Also of would look more sporty with the grey plastic on the bumper and side trim painted blue to match.
I saw the Ontario plates and knew these guys were my neighbors! Great job, turned out great! I painted a Corvette using Rust-Oleum spray paint and urethane clear.
@@RustedRides it looked great and I posted a video on my channel also with ls swapping it but I saw it listed on marketplace and looked like the clear started to delaminate
Hey! Thank you! Ya a few people I told were a little skeptical, and when we were mixing it I wasn't sure how it would turn out haha. But I'm very happy with it now!
At NAPA here in the states, not sure if they in Canada, they sell spray cans that replicate cast iron. I used that on some of my firebird parts. It;s a really nice looking paint. Might look good on the rims@@RustedRides
I have done a few enamel paint jobs over the years with similar results. On your trim there is a company called SEM that sells rattle can trim paint, the stuff is amazing and unlike the trim brightener stuff, it's a permanent fix. I discovered it a few years ago when I bought a can from an estate sale. Now I go out of my way to buy it for pretty much everything from the late 90's to today.
I did a truck in 2004 with rustoleum and mineral spirits in a garage. No clear, just three coats of paint. I didn’t even have a garage, the truck lived outside in central Ohio. I scrapped it in 2013, and the paint was just starting to let rust through. It was damn tough. Semi gloss black. I still have a quart of It, going to use it on the hood of my latest project.
@@DavidB-rx3km wow, you screwed it up… somehow. Not sure how you screwed up paint with rollers. I sprayed the one I mentioned above, but I’ve rolled one with amazing results (red) and have used their paint with a brush in non automotive applications. It always resulted in a high quality high shine (unless I used flat or semigloss) rock hard finish, that stuck to the surface like stink on shit, and wore like iron. Imagine not being able to figure out how to roll paint properly.
Have you had white wheels before? Ive resprayed mine 12 different colours lol Would not recommend with blue tbh. but also yolo just send it. white will be a good groundcoat for something else anyway
First things first, Lea is very beautiful. Rust-Oleum was my Father's brand of choice for the first automotive paint job I did, a 1959 VW type 2 Panel Van in like 1972. I however was issued a brush with which to apply it . Apparently this was something of a family tradition. My Father told me that when he came home with his first car a fire engine red prewar 8 cylinder Buick the first thing his Mother did was to have the hardware store immediately deliver can of dark green paint and a brush and ordered my Dad to have the car painted before his Father returned home from his work in the city that evening. Based upon my Father's birth year and that he was Choate class of '46 as the year this occurred.
Well, I wish you were my friends !! that would have been a $3000 plus job.😀 The body work and prep is the stuff. The paint is easy. But it looks awesome.!!!
Great job guys. Looks terrific for the effords put into it . Cheap , does look good & just a bit of work which ya have to do anyway. Goòd spraying of the paint as well both paint and clear. Well. Done fellas .

SpeedoKote makes some fantastic products at very reasonable prices. Their SMR-42 High solids clear is a bargain. I use their reducer and Acme Finish 1 hardener in my Rustoleum jobs. SPI makes the best clear but it’s quite expensive compared to SpeedoKote’s. I have several projects that I’ve painted using various products that I leave outside to test durability and yet to be disappointed
Back in 2018 I paid a guy to rustoleum my 99 Jeep Cherokee. $900 including clearcoat. Gloss white from the factory red. The clear coat is failing on the hood and front fenders but again, it's a Jeep and I didn't want to be worried about scratches, etc... on a $5k paint job. Next paint job on it I may go with the good old 70s enamel and skip the clear coat and keep it waxed. Like when my uncle painted my 66 Mustang Fastback Dodge metallic dark green in 76. Good job. It turned out great.
I used to cut enamel with lacquer thinner and add enamel hardener. It makes a good finish and requires some experimentation for the amount of hardener to use. Big job like this I would use less for better working time. Anyway I used to cut rubberized foundation coating with lacquer thinner and use a touch of hardener and use it for undercoating. You would be amazed at how nice a job that stuff does on frames and such. I have a rocker Shutz gun that I use to apply the undercoating on thicker. As you can imagine, a regular spray gun doesn’t work well with that stuff unless you thin it way down. Have fun.

twenty years ago i used to do these paint jobs with tremclad rust paint - i did several cars and a van - i noticed that after 6 months the paint slowly went flat and lost its shine but the cars still looked much better even after the paint flattened out
Ya, we have done two trucks like this previously, but not on the channel. They are holding up so far. We might do an update on this car in the future to show how it lasts.
That royfoss sticker looks familiar.🤨 I go 50/50 acetone / tremclad rust paint. I filter it direct into the cup gun, bridge coat first, and done. It does spray well, but it does stay soft longer than car paint. So...when I spray old cars, or machinery with this method, I just get high gloss paint and "F" the clearcoat. I tend to use goudey for everything, but I go to the main spot, not the dealers, they cut it atf. I sprayed more than 40 years (Cabinets, Fine Furniture, Cars, Big Trucks, Machinery etc... that kinda thing) and It looks like the finish guy here knows what's what. Thumbs Up!! Great video guys! Great channel!! 🕶

It looks so clean with the trim back on. Maybe you could use some of that trim restore on the plastic to look new again? Personally the thing that would drive me nuts is the little grits and chunks in the paint that settle from the dust, so I would spend so much time wet sanding lol.
Please, every year or so, give us an update as to how that paint job is holding up. I believe the 3 coats of clear will do the trick. I've had some difficulty with that paint getting moldy after a couple of years in my semi-tropics. Also, was that clear coat a similar composite of the color coat? Thanks!
Yes we will do updates on the car periodically to show how it lasts for sure! And no the clear was not the same, but that is why we let the blue set up till it was almost cured and then did the clear. We also could have let it cure completely then scuffed it before applying the clear coat

That's awesome! I hope this paint stands up for a long time as I hope to get more out of this car! What kind of race cars were you building/racing?
Exactly the prep work lays the foundation for the end result. Good prep will save you time and headache.
You guys come off like the McKenzie brothers. That's a good thing.
Thanks! We'll check them out!

Rust-Oleum sales just went up.. with this great paint job
Just an excellent job all around! Really enjoyed this. Reminds me of being younger and messing around with different paints and primers in the garage. Good times
Thank very much for that comment! Any cars you messed around with that you wish you still had?
That's enamel it will not dry enough in between coats to wet sand
I had a Matrix for many years, i traveled in it. I was also sleeping in it to avoid motel cost. Loved that car. Toyota make great cars.
They are so good and reliable! (most reliable pontiac out there haha) my in-laws have a matrix, the reliability/gas mileage is what made me look for a matrix/vibe.
Love to hear updates concerning the durability over time.
Ya, we'll have to do an update video at some point. We can also show some of the other trucks we did like this
I would love to see the other vehicles sprayed in a similar manner. I bet the Rustoleum holds up pretty well.
I did this with the Fire Red he showed early on. I used paint thinner to make it spray well then did clear. 6 years later, it's completely failed. Flaked off starting within 2 years of sunshine. I hope they have better luck.
But I was using only materials that were free to me.
@@davidhamm2613 to be fair my factory honda paint failed after 2 years in Las Vegas heat so I'd say good paint job. Must of done well with prep.
Looks a thousand times better outside under natural light, great job guys.
When I was younger we would refer to this as a 20/20 paint job - looks good driving by at 20mph from 20 feet away.
Haha yes, we've all done one of those paint jobs in the past
The way I see it, most cars are dirty 90 percent of the time. So they look good up close too, until they're washed.
I love the color of your Vibe, me I am painting my Vibe neon green, white, and red and a Pontiac badge on each rear quarter.
Thanks! That sounds cool. I'd like to see that finished product!
Hi from a province over in Manitoba! Colour looks great. These are super cars. Worth fixing up and keeping on the road. Thanks for the cheap ideas for a great paint job.
Hey neighbor! Ya I really do like them. Very reliable and cheap to run. I plan on keeping mine for a long time!
I had two Pontiac Vibes, they were just so amazing ! Best cars I ever had ! I now have a 2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid and I love it so much , I’m a die hard Toyota fan
Ya I'm really happy with mine, and that's awabout the 2024 corolla! They look really cool!
Hard not to be a fan. There was a short period where you could buy decent vibes for 800-1000. Super cheap Toyota
Rustoleum recommends Acetone as a thinner.
@@floridaroadracerguythe older cans say mineral spirits… it will off gas for a month if you do it that way.
Informative video, I had wondered about clearcoating Rust-Oleum and time to wait for clearing it.
Thanks, ya that is what we have found works for us, but I'm sure people have had good results using other methods. We are happy with this though
Let's see the car with the new wheels! Also, show a before and after buff job on the paint! :D
Silver rims. Cool colors go with cool colors. Fantastic results. Good job
Nice! What car was the convertible? I might give this a cut and polish in the spring and see how that turns out!
@@RustedRides It was a '77 MGB. I mixed Rustoleum Sail blue and white 50/50 for a color just a bit lighter than you ended up with here.
@@RustedRides i was thinking that being in Canada and that white crap all over you need a good style snow tire.
Back in the day we used to roll on Rustoleum on Beetles as they come apart so easy, it made it so easy.
Looked halfway decent as it self levels.
Haha, That's great! My dad used to tell me about how he and his brother would work on beetles swapping things back and forth to have a good running one!
@@RustedRides they so simple it's a joy to wrench on them, they are incredible on snow, mud, off-road, and so on. Without extreme mods either
$300! That’s awesome 🎉 what a difference. As far as rim colour, I’d say Bronze. Blue and Bronze are always a winning pair. 👍🏻
Very true, can't go wrong with that combo! Dang this is going to be hard to decide!
@@RustedRidesdefinitely a bronze or copper color wheels would look great with that blue. Also of would look more sporty with the grey plastic on the bumper and side trim painted blue to match.

Bronze!
This is the combo but also depends on the rim design. Great job and will look good whatever goes on there now.

Oh awesome! That's good to know! I'll look into that for sure!

So glad you cleared that Rustoleum, wouldn't lasted without
I did a truck in 2004 with rustoleum and mineral spirits in a garage. No clear, just three coats of paint. I didn’t even have a garage, the truck lived outside in central Ohio. I scrapped it in 2013, and the paint was just starting to let rust through.
It was damn tough. Semi gloss black. I still have a quart of
It, going to use it on the hood of my latest project.
Eeee my first appearance in rusted rides!! 😉 Regarding the rims, you know what I think Tim - nice white rims would really pop with the blue!
Yes first but not last! And yes white is a strong contender!
Your crew went above and beyond.
Definitely did. It's nice to get the extra help!
White wheels would really set that car off! Great job!

Car looks great you have a great friend that helped you enjoy your new paint job kind regards to you all
Thank you! Ya he is great at what he does!
LOVE my 2007 Vibe! Ironically, mine is nearly the same stock blue as as the color you made yours. Great job on the work!
I just got a photo the other day of mine parked next to the factory blue. Very close but the oem has metallic and slightly different shade
Glad to see Matco's paint method is still going strong in the DIY market.
Awesome work guys! I have an 05 Neon that's gonna get the tremclad treatment.
Nice! Let us know how it goes!
Have fun.

Yes! We've actually wanted to try doing a tinted bed liner paint job in a truck. We might just do that! Thanks for watching/commenting!
twenty years ago i used to do these paint jobs with tremclad rust paint - i did several cars and a van - i noticed that after 6 months the paint slowly went flat and lost its shine but the cars still looked much better even after the paint flattened out
Ya, we have done two trucks like this previously, but not on the channel.
Ahh so you are from the GTA! Thanks for the tip too. Cool to hear how everyone makes their paint jobs work

Nailed it on the blue. The wheels should be blue also or blue and gun metal grey. What about the mid body rubber trim?
Blue accents on the wheels would be cool. Are you asking about the grey cladding? Or the midway up the door trim?
It looks so clean with the trim back on. Maybe you could use some of that trim restore on the plastic to look new again? Personally the thing that would drive me nuts is the little grits and chunks in the paint that settle from the dust, so I would spend so much time wet sanding lol.
Yes the little dust nibs have had their time. I'll be doing a wet sand and polish soon to smooth things out! Thanks for watching!
You can never go wrong with solid black. But solid black with blue accents would be nice too
Please, every year or so, give us an update as to how that paint job is holding up.
That came out nice! I would use gold anodized aluminum rims to set off the paint job.
Thank you,! And we have been thinking a lot about the bronze look. Maybe a gunmetal with some bronze tones
