In this weeks video I try out some ideas from you guys, thanks for the ideas!! This week we shot some @spraymax glamor clear over @RustOleumBrands Flat Black Turbo spray paint. We wanted to see if it was possible or not. Well, it turned out awesome. I think this is the new way I'm going to do this process when I use the 2k clear. The flat black lays down so much better than the gloss turbo and also it dries a lot faster!!! Make sure you tune in next week to see me cut and buff it to a mirror finish!!! Rember to keep praying for the folks in western NC, Tenn. Ga. and Fla. God Bless Adrian At AC Designs Garage!!!

So nice to hear your doing that for the hurricane residents what a good man ,amen brother 🙏
Thank you, they need so much, so we're just trying to do our part, hope you have a Blessed day!!!
Heat the 2k up to 120F using hot tap water, they spray better and flow better.
Dudes that use spray cans with their thumb are on a whole other level 🔥
Index Finger got tired lol 😆
I love that 2k clear. In my experience it does best with a few lighter coats finished with a heavy end coat, but the results are pretty amazing for a rattle can.
I agree I wish they made the 2k in the turbo size can!!!!
I've had great luck with it myself. Holds up pretty damn well over time, surprisingly.
A few years ago i saw a guy that painted his truck in bedliner, then clear coat over it, looked pretty cool like wet coal
That is pretty cool!!!!
Thanks! Dang, glad I said hey last week. I'll be shopping for a SM4000 next year when I get to doin it. That turned out almost cut & buffed already.
Thank you very much!!! Wait till Its buffed you'll be amazed!!!
What I got out of that video is how to properly shake paint. Awesome 😂
Hahahahaha
It’s me again Alan from Ireland and I just rewatched this episode and you just answered my question perfectly. Great video and I should watch your videos without any distractions! Good job kind regards Alan
Thank you very much Alan for your continued support!!!! Hope to be shipping to you guys soon!!!
Looks good.... I painted my whole van with turbo came out great.
Heck yeah ,Awesome!!!
Thanks!
Thank you very much I'll send it to the disaster fund!!!
Perfect! Thank You. 📿
Been trying to find a video like this for weeks.
Thanks man!
Thank you very much!!!
Watching tonight in my new AC Designs t-shirt! Thanks for helping those in need! Can"t wait for that next vid. That flat turbski is a real nice base coat, way better than the gloss.
Thank you very much for the support, and for helping out western NC!!!
"Death before Electric."
But please excuse me while I demonstrate how to mix a spray can with my ELECTRIC saw inside my ELECTRIC-powered shop housing cars that burn gasoline produced by ELECTRIC-powered oil refineries.
The irony doesn't get much better. 😀
I love my AWD Ford Focus RS. It's been tuned for E85 and runs like a bat out of Hell. But if Ford made a serious EV version (a Focus RS "Tesla Plaid" if you will) of the Focus, I'd snag one in a heartbeat. A 5-passenger street-legal sedan that gets 100+ mpge and can do the standing 1/4 mile in 9.1 seconds at 150 mph, is pretty impressive.
This video is perfect timing. I was thinking about doing this to the hood of my car. The paint has been faded badly by the Sun . It's dark blue, so black would work well.
Considering you did this outside, that 2k over the flat black came out looking pretty nice. 👍
Max spray glamour 2k clear in rattle can with activator is good stuff. I use it to fix my cars paint job all the time love this product
I was super impressed on how well it buffs!!!!
Every time you stop and start in the middle of the panel, I wanna scream lol
I was diggin the red coming through in places. That way if it ever scratched it matches the truck.
Yeah I kinda liked it also lol
I've used the 2k clear in a pinch and it works great. For smaller sections, be careful as it takes more time to flash between coats. I had some solvent pop and had to re-do a small panel. Looks great.
Thank you for the tip!!
Fellow Western NC native here! Good work, I think that turned out amazing! I've tried paint projects like this in the past and never seem to get as nice of a result as you guys.
Awesome hope yall are well!! It's just a little pratice. I try to make this stuff as easy as I can, if you have any questions let me know. I love the mountains, my grand pa lived in Waynesville and had a cabin out in the country. I grew up there in the summer and vacations!
@@ACDesignsGarage I grew up in Brevard and loved every bit of it. I thought you did a bang up job!
I actually 3 stage painted my car with Rustoleum products and used 2k clear coat. it turned out pretty good I think, actually people that have seen it don’t believe it is spray paint 😂
I bet it looks awesome!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage have a couple videos on my RUclips channel of some parts if interested. I did a flake 2nd stage
I did this back in 1975 on my motorcycle. I didn't sand after spraying the flat black. Waited (per directions) between coats for the 2 top coats of gloss clear. Hand painted Redish-Orange & Sunshine Yellow simple strips. You could not see where the surface of that black was as you can with gloss black, it looked like a black hole. Made the strips appear to be floating. 😡Harley in 1976 did my paint scheme on one of their stock bikes (the thieves). Anyway, no one was able to duplicate how I did that black for 12 years. _ 😉 _
Man id love to have seen that!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage
I'll look for the Polaroids, haven't gazed at'm for 20 years.
I found them but pix is so small can't really see the paint job.
I did a test panel with Rustoleum matte finish, went over that with a silver and candy green from napa and then the 2k clear. Looked great for awhile. After a few months it was full of cracks. Took the panel in to Napa to have them look at it and try to figure what happened. Once I mention everything was over a Rustoleum he knew the issue. He said the chemical(s) in the Rustoleum to don't mix with the automotive paint and clear causing the cracking. Hopefully yours turns out better. It's just my experience with it.
Yeah it's a gamble for sure, I've had pretty good luck so far but you never know, I think the less amout of material on there the better, thanks for the tip!!!!
Sounds like the coats were to heavy
They could definetly be correct, but i feel like it was the easiest way for a napa employee to push the blame on something other than their clear. Seems to be alot of people using catalyzed clear over rustoleum with no issues
I sprayed a Harley gas tank with flat black rustoleum and 2k clear. Havnt had any problems in over a year. Even spilt gas on it…it’s still shiny
Do you think it was because it was over a matte instead of a flat?
Bed side, turned out nice, as is! Should, be glass, when you're done! I'd, buy one of your shirts, with your VW on it. I'm, a Ford guy but own air cooled VW's, also.
Thank you, I may put it on there, It would be awesome!!!
I have a 62 Mercury Comet S22.
Presidential black is the color code.
I was gonna leave it bare metal and 2k clear coat (matt) but seeing how the black looks.... I'll do the same on the Comet
Yeah I think it would look awesome black!!! I've had trouble with clearing bare metal, it flakes off eventually and if it gets a small chip it will start rusting!
Ended up doing a lot more body work to my car than initially planned and painted my car with turbo white and cleared with satin 2k and it looked fantastic at a fraction of the cost
Man I bet that is awesome 👌
@ACDesignsGarage it turned out really good, especially considering it was my first project
@@AlphaSykotikwhat sand paper grits did you use ?
Prior to actually spraying I just used 320 all over. I honestly was a little bit TOO OCD trying to get everything as perfect as absolutely possible, but after using several different brandsI found a Rust-Oleum primer (filler primer I think) that also helped with anything I might of missed @@Erick-Grajales
I'm the rattle can King King and his paint job made me look bad that looks pretty good clear over flat black I got to admit that looks pretty nice
Hahahaha thank you very much!!!
Great content if your worried about voc and wearing a respirator make sure you put prefilters in your respirator
Yes I agree I got a new one this week!!!
Great video ! I really appreciate you making it easy to donate to help those affected so terribly by Helene. I am a struggling Florida man but my struggle doesn't compare to what they are facing. I purchased several shirts and will also pass those donation contacts you listed to my buddys. I deeply appreciate you brother. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you very much, well be praying for y'all. I know it's got to be tough storm after storm. I have some friends that live in Cape Coral, Fla.
Ive used that 2k on guitar finishes. Works great.
That's a great idea!!!!
Base Clear came out all the paint is flat so it will adhere. Why not invest in a paint gun and use cheaper paint. Generally if you want to clear get on it so they can melt together. Been painting since 1983. Put some dish soap in your wet sand water helps lubricate plus cleans. Be sure to rinse really well. Here at American Equuipment we are finishing the Jeepster 1948 Vortec version. Then on to building the 1957 Chevy Short bed into a 2004 All wheel drive 500 HP. Monster for the Colorado Mountain men.
I have sata jets and all the goodies, I m trying to help the guys that dont have all the compressors and stuff. I totally agree this spray paint stuff is alot harder to do lol. Thank you for the soap trick idea!!!
I finally understand why everyone goes for a shorted on these trucks, half the body work compared to the long bed😂
I guess I'm just gunna have to do the extra work, I like my long box
Long beds are for work trucks imo. They just a bit ugly when aint nothin but a bed
Hahaha true, I had a long bed 68 c10 and cut it down, now I wish I would of left it alone!!
Prayers to all those in need my friend
Thank you very much!!!
I have used the 2k clear cans before and they are awesome!! They are more intended for smaller projects like mirrors or door handles, but you can absolutely use them on bigger ones like in this video it can just end up costing you more than if you just went and got a spray gun and bought it by the quart or gallon. With a gun you get a much thicker end result also on larger panels like this one. If you are using the flat 2k clear coat spray it the best you can because you can not cut and buff it at all!! It will become glossy if you do. So any run or trash is there to stay with the flat clear coat just so you know. The can says 48 hours after you mix the activator with it, but i have had it last up to a week before by putting it in the refrigerator, but that was pushing it and i would not recomend doing that if you can avoid it. Circumstances just called for it in my situation when i did it.
I agree its alot harder than just buying clear and a gun and shooting it lol, and cost more hahahaha
Here’s a little something till I order my shirts any 2xls
Since you asked I have a THING and 71 VERT so I’d like to see VWs. Oh I have a SUBURBAN as well
Thank you very much well send that to the children's home in western NC!! As for the 2 xl I think there are a couple left, it will say if there instock on the website. Those are goin fast!!!
That came out awesome!
Can’t wait for the cut and buff. Gotta see how it turns out!
This week she'll Shine!!!
This will be mirror!
@@ACDesignsGarageyessir!
Anytime that you are going to clear over any color you want to use flat as the color or "base coat." Actual base coat automotive paint when you shoot it it dries flat or semi flat and the shine comes from the clear top coat. Think of it like a sponge, the flat is porise and the clear will bond to it extremely well. Gloss is like a coat of plastic that the top surface is smoth and difficult for the clear to adhere to. Also with gloss when you clear over it, the chemicals in the clear can reactivate the ones in the color and make it lift or wrinkle up bad. With flat it doesnt do that unless you really lay it on too thick or dont wait between coats for it flash off at all, but you have to really try to mess it up with the flat paint.
Yeah I agree, I didn't know the had flat when I done the first video, but that flat acts just like base coat!!!
I’d like to see your design with your 66 bug in it, that would be cool. I’m learning a lot from this video, Great video.
Thank you, I think that's next on the agenda!!
I’m just gonna say it let’s paint ole patches that flat black then load her up on the trailer and ship her to west Tennessee. Alright then! 😂enjoy your content. Have a good evening
That's a good idea , I'll probably take it to the tripple crown in Nashville next year!!! Have a Blessed weekend bud!!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage you as well. You as well.
Well Hey there Neighbor!
I hate I missed the Family Reunion... 😢
I'm in West TN too! (Near Savannah, Pickwick, Shiloh)
But I'm sure glad I saw this video. I've been struggling with my 2k clear.
I keep watching your videos and I think I've finally figured out what I'm doing wrong. ❤
Ideally you would do the color and then clear when its just barely flashed. This will give you a polymer cross-link between the two coatings. I've done it this way on motorcycle parts and it works great.
I've done that on a pervious video , your right works great!!!
Its a BOOM!
Being paint body man myself that looks good i like your idea about flat black if person going paint full size truck i would buy some clear off line buy and perches paint gun from harbor frieght would work best if someone has air compressor
That sounds like a good video idea!!! Thanks!!!
nice job ,good show here
Thank you very much!!!
It'll look good for about 22 months 🤙
For $50.00 that's not to bad lol
Better then Macco😅 it opens my mind to get rolling painting parts of my car
I have been amazed myself!!!!
Im gonna have the freshest garbage hauler at the dump now. Thank you
A flat base coat will have great surface which the clear will stick very well too. All the wet sanding should be used during the build coat and clear coat to give it that high quality shine with no orange peel and be straight as glass. Wet sanding the clear coat is always the best way to make the best looking paint job.
I don't care if you lay 4 coats of clear, you should always cut and buff after the body has had a full wet sanding.
I cut and buff everything lol, It just looks better!!!
im so glad you made this video sir,,, ima go with the flat black aswell..
It's my new favorite!!!!
Great video, but What one needs to know
Curing Process: Automotive paints and clear coats are typically designed to cure properly when applied over surfaces prepared for them. Rustoleum, which is an oil-based paint, doesn't cure the same way as automotive paints. The curing process for automotive paints might not work well over Rustoleum, causing tension in the layers as they dry, leading to cracks.
Layer Compatibility: Automotive paints, especially 2K clears, require a specific surface preparation and base layer that Rustoleum doesn't provide. Even if the finish initially looks great, the paint layers can start to separate or crack over time as they don't bond well with the underlying Rustoleum layer.
I agree I've been custom painting for 20 years, not sure why it works but it does lol
I saw a few videos they say to let that clear sit in hot water and it will lay a lot better.
I've tried that and I can't tell much difference but it is pretty warm here right now. In the winter I can see that it may make a difference.
Great idea for small projects. VW t-shirt would be cool to see. Thanks
Thank you I may do that, thanks for the info!!!
I'm in SC and we were already aware of the unnatural amount of flooding going on in NC before the hurricane hit. They didn't warn us of what actually came, and we were out of power for over 8 days.
We were very fortunate to have a generator with 4 outlets we had to ration off and us and family helping each other got by ok. But I don't ever want to be caught off guard like that again.
So having known what happened to us, I can't imagine what it must be like for those parts of FL and NC that were hit so hard.
Anyway, thanks for the video. I was always curious as to what that clear was like over flat as opposed to gloss.
My experience is with residential painting and I think for my next project I'm gonna stick with single stage enamel. I know it's not sexy like urethane these days but it is very decent, thick tough paint that when it does fade or oxidize, you can just polish and buff it up again. I never had to have a car that absolutely gleams.
It's too easy for a stray tree limb, door ding or parking lot buggy to ruin your day on that one.
Glad yall are OK. Yeah that enamel is pretty good . It last even longer if you will buy the hardner for it!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage Oh yea the hardener is what really makes the whole thing worth it. 👍
Painted a 76 Nova I had with some shakem up rattle can. It was far from good but good from afar lol
Awesome I bet it looks great!!!!
I put PPG I think it was DBu clear over tractor paint as a base.... Worked fine. Can put it over anything almost.
I want to try some of the better clears over it!!!
Thanks for this im going with a second hand truck last guynplasti dipped the front grill and the bumpers. Turned out really poor but the trucks got a new motor so i want it to not look like the pos it is on the outside
Amazed at how long that 2k sprayed.
I know it goes forever lol
Great demo !! Been wanting to do this
Thank you, it's fun to make something look like a high dollar paint job for 50 or so dollars lol
Wet sanding like the days of lacquer. This is basically how all cars are painted...the base paint doesn't need to be perfect and the clear coat covers and gives the gloss.
I've actually painted lacquer on a 56 chevy and your right!!!!
Only a hack would use turbo cans on a paintjob! 😜

Cool video!!!
Thank you!!!!
I might be tempted to use a new can for the final coat before that one takes to spitting and sputtering.
Yeah it gets a little sketchy towards the end.
Very jealous - here in the UK we get a few short weeks in Summer to spray outside - the rest of the year is either damp, rain, snow, hail, too cold !
I still spray from home but it is touch and go as to whether the paint stays on the car or just runs off it 😳
Yeah it's starting to get cold here, I got to figure something out lol!
Excited tonwatch the cut and buff on it you should 100% give it a ceramic coating after Make it really shine
Awesome thanks for the tip, I may try that!!!!
If your touching up a newer vehicle panel, skip the cut and buff cause it will look factory or your panel will be smoother than the others and stick out like a pig in the sheep pin.
I agree its tough to touch up a factory job and get the same peel in the clear!!!
I wouldn’t use 1500 on that clear I think it’s too thin I’d just wet sand with 2000 then 3000 then cut and buff. I am curious how it holds up to 1500. I’ve used that exact clear on a bumper blend. It works great. It blends right in with the blending spray at the end. I was pretty happy with the texture and shine.
Yeah I may start with 2000 since there is not alot of peel on this one!
You need a patent on the spray can shaker!
Forsure!!!!
Right on! I had a feeling that would look better. What do you think makes the gloss have more orange peel than the flat?
I'm guessing that ut has to do with the gloss is all I can figure, that flat sprays like a dream!!!
Nice video sir. Liked n subscribed.
Thank you very much!!!!
After you cut and buff the flat black show us how the gloss side is holding up. Also I think your new shirt needs a turbski and 2k can on it. Did you get parts for patches? I’m ready to see that thing moving again.
Will do, its nasty because I blew grass all over it lol, but as for the gloss it's still just as good. It may need to be re buffed because of me lol. I hope to just on patches this winter. I'm taking my surburban to the c10 fall revival in NC this weekend!!
I see that comet👀 in the background lol
We need to get back on that thing!!!
@ I’d love to see more! I used to have 1964 4 door comet. A friend of mine Omar Ramirez has a 1964 comet cyclone that I’m helping him get it back on the road. I currently have a 1963 Mercury Marauder.
I used the 2k gloss over Walmart quick color gloss black. It did not peel. I did let the cheap gloss black dry for a few days.
Fack man you are Rockin that rattle can .Nice 😎
Hahaha thanks, I'm starting to love them hahahaha
bro you so hilarious id be weak workin with you i can tell lol
Hahaha thank you!!!
Damn got me wanting to paint my 2v 😂
Go for it!!!
I've got CBR600RR that I just restored with new fairings, cheapest ones were flat black, I figured I could just paint my own decals, just wanna use gloss black on top the flat, worried about the edges of the gloss on top the flat lookin effed up. Winter is here now so guess we are wainting till spring.
You can get fast black rustoleum let it dry for a few days ,wet sand it lightly with 600 grit then get some matte spray max 2k clear and spraymax 2k gloss clear and get a great job. Spray one sheen one day then tape it up and the other sheen the next day as long as its dry!
I really wish rusto-leum had a 2k can. In South Africa we have to import these cans and they work out to be so expensive due to tax and shipping. Works out to almost 100 dollars a can. 😢
Wow thats crazy, I wish they did make the turbo 2k also!!
I went to a local car show last month and sadly that spray can paint job looked better than some of the paintjobs on some of the cars i saw. They looked like they tried to stretch a single quart of basecoat and a single quart of clear coat and paint the entire car.
Hahaha thank you!!!
Can you paint my 91 Chevy? lol... Great video!
Thanks for the offer but I'm covered up lol, thanks for watching!!!
Just a Random question what size shop is that and what size would you recommend and also do you know if a place in your area that sells them the prices here in south Texas are crazy! Will travel for savings 😄 and God bless brother!
It's a 26x26 with 9ft legs. There crazy expensive around NC also. Thanks for your support, God Bless!!!
Typically your flat paints contain all the same components as the gloss. The only difference is there are flattening agents added to gloss to create flat. The problem is your gloss paints are harder than the flat. You can achieve a hard, flat finish by using steel wool or ultra fine sand paper to cut the gloss. You can also control the degree of matte you get.
It's crazy that the flat layes down with a ton less peel than the gloss.
@ACDesignsGarage Never was a fan of the flat black scheme. In fact now I hate the black wheels, people put on their vehicles. It's like they're saying I'm not going to wash the road dirt/brake dust, off my wheels, so I'll save the work and just paint them black. As for rattlecan paint jobs, I repainted my motorcycle/fairing with spray cans. They turned out great.
Just realized something... you should have tipped that box on its front end. Spray width be MUCH narrower.
No question about the flat laying down with less orange peel. Have you tried other Rustoleum flat colors (2X Non-Turbo) with the 2K clear? Would just like to have more options than White and/or Black. Thanks!
Not yet it should be simular but I'd do a test pannel for sure. I'll try to do a video on that as soon as I get my tent paint booth!!!
is that a car port that you were standing in? Looks like you put a carport up against the brick building. I am thinking about doing that to the front of my garage.
Yes its a 26'x26' carport enclosed, works great 👍
@@ACDesignsGarage Thank you so much for the reply! I had the same idea a couple of weeks ago trying to expand my garage the cheapest way I could figure out. Big thanks from the UK . Great video.. Keep it up brother..
Thank you very much for the support!!!
can you use the turbo gloss clear over the turbo closs black ?
thanks 🤷
You could but it won't last as long as the 2k clear. I'm gonna do a comparison video soon as it warms up on the turbo clear and 2k clear.
You can't put lacquer over enamel, lacquer is an eater and will try to become one with the previous coating and will have a bad reaction although if you shoot the lacquer when the enamel is wet it will work.
Yeah I agree, thats why I use a urethane clear instead of a lacquer clear, plus it holds up alot better
If the clear comes out pretty smooth, what would you cut and buff this with?
Probably 2500 grit the huff with the meguiars m105 then polish with the m205
Cost effectiveness between buying a gallon and all the mixing supplies and regular gallon of clear comparison to all the spray cans it would take to do the whole truck
Well that spray Max is $20+ a can and it adds up really quick. A gallon of speedokote clear coat would end up cheaper if you were doing a whole car, that is if you have a compressor that will keep up with a spray gun.
The gallon would be a little more but alot less work than the spray can forsure. If you have the ability to spray with a gun I'd go for it!!!
