- Rustoleum came out with the 5 in 1 spary paint cans and ive noticed people making claims that you can paint entire cars with them. Is it really that easy or is it all smoke and mirrors? Lets find out! Please subscribe to my channel and hit the like button so I can keep making content! This paint comes in a ton of different colors and some of them are really nice.

Hood looks great. One tip that I was taught is…when applying multiple coats of rattle can base coat…before the last layer of base, do a very fine grit sand to remove any orange peel, dust or debris. (3k and up depending on debris). Then follow up with your final base coat. This helps with levelling of the final pass and ensuring the last coat has the least amount of contamination.
One other health tip, get a respirator. You’re filtering out paint particles but not the toxic fumes. That stuff will kill you.
It's not as bad with paint but once he puts on a 2k clear that has isocyanates, then you really need a filter, organic, and even eye protection

The particles will enter the the pore's and hit the blood stream 😮 I had this happen back in the day with lacquer paint.I was spraying over a 150 gallon a week...

Looks good for a home paint job. I would probably put some clear on it before sanding/polishing to make it more durable.
Absolutely. I’ve had jobs that turned out spectacular especially after wet sanding it and buffing it if you want to go crazy put 2K clear over top.
You did a great job for rattle can, and yes I would.
I just did mine and used the Eastwood 2k clear over some Home Depot bear spray cans and I’m amazed, not a 20 k paint job like I was quoted but defiantly better than a macco job. I think I’m in it about 300$
What you should do is when you're done spray painting.You should take the spray can and turn it upside down and hold the nozzle down so you can clear out the nozzle.
I’ve done that, I do it inside an old trash can. these nozzles still get clogged somehow after sitting. Thanks for the tip though (pun intended) it will probably help someone else who sees your comment!

Another few good tips is, tuck your shirt in and put item on a angle to prevent air from coming out of can from holding can on to much of a angle. Looks good!

Looks pretty good man. A friend of mine did the same.He put cans in warm water and it flowed nicely. Then finished it with 2k clear. His trick was he sprayed with two cans at the same time to get a wide fan and keep a wet edge and minimal tiger striping. Then buffed it. It also looked great and lasted a few years till he got rid of the truck. Disregard the negative comments souch nicer than it was

This is how I painted my first car 50 years ago with rust oleum spray cans
Back then they had lot #’s on the cans so it helped with the color match
and it came out much better than an earl Shieb $20 paint job 👍

I have done finish body work over 2k with no issues since 1998. And recently tested it on one day cured no mechanical sanding at all and it was and has bonded fine for a year now. Did epoxy beneath the 2k
Did my old 97 Dodge 1500 hood at work and just sanded it down and of course rag clean up and used a rustoleom spray can and won't use clear cloat because the engine heat will peel it off. Old work truck so no worries

I think it came out 👍 for the high price shops charging these days and if your paint job don’t have it to be perfect i think it excellent way ofgoing my to save money !
Silly tip that I use. Spray the nozzle of the spray can with brake clean and wipe nozzle off especially if storing for later use but do what ever you want whatever
I always like to see other peoples results for this . I would not paint an entire car this way but I have had great luck with rattle can base coat clear coat body work touch ups and panel painting . Just like paint gun work if you take your time and do your best to keep everything clean , after cutting and buffing it can be hard to tell the difference between factory paint and touch ups . keep bringing the good vids .

The disadvantages are (1) the choice of colors that are available ,(rust o leum) Keep in mind that you are using the rattle can formula which is not oil based and is somewhat compatible with other paints(2) it is not very durable.However if you follow up with a top coat of 2k clear then that may mitigate some of that issue. The advantage ? No compressor is.needed.

even with it being a single stage paint i would still put a few lays of clear on top after a wet sand. that is were all the protection and long lasting comes from. i have done rattle can jobs before and as long as you prep it right it will come out nice. then put clear on it to make it last.

For a trail rig, spray paint is perfect, easy to paint match and "good enough". Anything more than a trial rig would require a better process. Turned out pretty good though. Thanks for sharing this!

Brother, yes, I own a 98 Chevy obs and did the prep work, same as you used the same color. the only difference is that rustoleum didn't have the multi settings can at that time. I painted the truck with the same fantastic results people thought I had it done at a paint shop. I had very little runs with no orange peel that was 2 years ago, and it is still holding up. It still looks good, only natural expected scratches and dings, which worked out well because I did faux patina that also came out great with again rustoleum anyone can do it with patience and prep work just take your time. Great, keep the videos coming.

Try the faux patina. Cool thing about it is if you don't like it, you can just paint over with a normal coat of paint because with faux patina, is a lot of light dusting coats of colors especially when using different colors of primer for the rust effects wish I knew how to upload pic of hood I used very large vintage gas station decal from killer decals to add a killer look

What's the $ price of 1 can ? Considering how many cans it takes to paint a vehicle. My guess 12-14 cans
7 bucks a can, I linked them in the video description. How many would be decided on how much surface area you’re working with. For the FJ40, I estimated 12 cans with 4-5 coats. Roughly 80 bucks to paint the thing.
The best part is that it's a hood from an FJ40!

Yeah it’s not quite the lighter pailer blue they came stock with and I was worried it would be too “loud” but the longer I look at it the better it looks to me.
The question would you spray a whole car ? How many cans do you need at what cost ? Basically only if you dont have a spray gun. The cheapest is a 1 ltr tin of enamel and turps, regular thinners will make it dry quicker , but more expensive. However , the quicker it dries the less time it has to level out, more orange peel. But the more dry time , the bigger chance of dust and bugs settling on it. Epoxy enamel will dry a bit harder. As for cutting and buffing , I have never tried it on regular enamel. The whole point I am making here is that every time I have used rattle cans for anything other than small items , the cost has blown out, due to the number of cans needed, add this to returning to the store only to find that they dont have any more of that color.
120.00 to paint this whole truck in this case. I’ll be doing a video just on that. I order my paint online to make sure I have enough. These cans are only 7.00 USD each.

What happens is you when you use a spray can you get what they call tiger stripes.
I will be doing my car this way, it would look better than haveing clear coat peel all over the place

I was always under the impression that Rustoleum never really fully cures. However I haven't used it in years. But it looks awsome!
I do think it fully cures after about a week. Those first 2-3 days it seems softer but most paints do during that time. Rustoleum paint has special oils in them that prevent rust and so it does take longer to polymerize, thus a longer curring time. Thanks for watching!

Man you must be a perfectionist because based on what I see, it looks show quality to me. But I’m definitely a novice. Curious to know why with all the overspray, your floor doesn’t appear to have changed blue? Lastly, as I mentioned I’m a novice and 1 key tip is to be patient. Thanks for the video.
I spray the floor with water to keep the dust down. Overspray also doesn’t stick to it!

u do understand that most modern paint require no finer sanding then 320 or it can have a problem holding to the surface a lot like 220 with a sealer coat and when u use paint with no hardener it will never harden which will create problems if u ever repaint the rig. i worked for years painting rigs and every time i run into spray paint i have problems
Fully aware. This is discussed in other comments. I clearly state that this won’t be as good as most professional paints, however when on a budget this is a great solution for someone.

Just curious, why didn’t you fill the dent before you primed it. Every body repair I’ve ever seen or done, you cut the paint to bare metal with a really rough disc, fill it, sand it, then prime and paint. Not busting your chops, just some helpful hints.
That’s what I usually do, I just wanted to see if it would separate over time.

Racedeck, I believe it’s made of ABS but the garage is sloped so water doesn’t sit, it escapes.
I'm thinking about doing my 82 corvette. Its straight ,from the doors back its originl but the hood and fr fenders hae a peeling 2 stage withe a bad color match . We'll see ..

What did you fo about the spots you got your dhirt on the paint?
I know it looks like my shirts touching in the video, I had to look after I edited the video but my shirt somehow never touched. Unless I just got lucky and there were not impressions. My shirt stayed paint free as well which further confused me.

It did. Make sure you do plenty of prep and lay primer first! It’s always a good idea to put a 2k clear coat over the top as well!
How mush cheaper is the spray can method over going out and buying the tools I need to paint? Thanks.
in greece its not one lt paint harderner and the spray gun can cost like 100
another 50 for primer and clear coat
30-50 for scratch pads
and way better results
In the US you can do this for 100-200 bucks. Real paint, guns and various supplies would run you 1000-1500 with cheap paint.

Cut and polish is not part of the initial paint job that’s it’s own job and charge. Just to educate and wayyyyy to much compound man a dab will do ya.

Can i get away with 400 grit over primer and paint with this spray paint or should i do 600? My car has been primed for a couple of days and just been kicking it around ill be wet sanding
You can get away with 400, but spray an extra couple coats to help level the paint
It would change even more if people stop using the default tip and get some graffiti tips for their rattle cans. Rattle Cans have an assortment of different tips for painting!

Is this cost saving from just buying a gallon of paint and reducer and hardner.
Absolutely. 14.00 worth of paint for a hood. Roughly 120.00 to paint a whole vehicle.
Typically I spend 900-1200 for four quarts of paint.
Plus not everyone has a paint booth, an air compressor, a spray gun, etc...
Some people just wanna know how to make it look better than it does right now - we don't need it to look ShowCar perfect.
Plus, $14-$90 for spray paint is quite alot different than all that equipment plus the prifessional grade paint ($1500+) or paying a professional to do it for you...
Id be interested to see how long it would hold up to mother nature. I bet it would last less than a year like a real paint job.
Someone here in the comments has had this paint for a couple years and says it holds up. But it will be interesting to see!
Always looks nice when new but i never had any luck with durability- its too thin - the most durable paint job i did was a gallon of tractor implement high gloss enamel at the time 26 bucks a gallon i still have the hood 30 later no rust other than dust it looks the same. Hood looks dam good!
yeah ill be interested in seeing if it holds up or not. So far I am impressed and judging by some of the other comments, it just might be tougher than expected. It's only as thin as you make it. one dust coat and 4-5 medium to heavy coats and this stuff rocks. Thats good to know about tractor implement. @@dyingforpie6879

Matters to the vehicle. On a 98 Frontier that I'm still using as a durt and tool truck...with all those flat suirfaces...
Yeah a $600-$2000 paint job is money better spent elsewhere on repairs or suspension flaws...even interior reupholstery or seat covers and carpet.
You stop rust, which is what paint was meant to do. On an old truck a flat finish army style is much easier for a first attempt than this gloss.
If it’s a dirt truck, might as well spray it with the tintable raptor coating. Nothing beats it durability.
Why the soap in the water when wet sanding? I feel like the paint is not cured yet and could do more harm than good. I was told not to wash my car for 7 days when I got one painted in high school.
There was a break in filming over the course of a week, the paint had plenty of time to cure.
The soap is to help lubricate the surface as the garage was warm.
The soap keeps the wet and dry sand paper clean

The floor gets sprayed with water prior to keep dust down and to prevent the paint from sticking.
Back in the day I raddle can painted entire cars and cut and buffed. People thought I had a couple thousand dollar paint job.

@@GhostSpeedShop until I got a setup. I would put 3 to 4 coats, and then color sand 600-800 grit until down to one level. It should look like one dull coat. You were close but didn't sand all the orange peel out.
Then I would put a minimum of 4 coats of clear coat all raddle can. Then I would cut and buff 1000 to 1500, then 2000, and then 3000 grit, and then buff and polish.
People thought I had spent thousands of dollars on paint. Truth painting is easy the outcome is all on the prep and finish. Don't worry about runs they can be sanded out. Even the great Foose gets runs and junk in his paint.
Also you didn’t do a very good job wet sanding and especially buffing it…so looks not to bad for how you did it

Probably a thin coat. For a whole CRX, I’d use 10-12 cans

😂no.....😂.rattlecan paint will never cure to the hardness of auto paint.nor has the UV resistance needed to deal with direct sunlight 24/7. Fingernail test.lololol.😂
I could brush on latex house paint and make look nice for a day and photos/video..... it's not about today ...it's about next week.next year.😅😅😅😅😅
Other comments say otherwise about it lasting for years, with examples from people who used this exact paint years ago. Also, fingernail test had no impression. Hardness doesn’t really matter when you spray 2k clear over the top as well.
I get it, it’s hard to believe that spray paint could come out like this…. But there’s a lot of people using Rustoleum specifically without issues.
@@GhostSpeedShop mmmm...etching properties solvent penetration just isn't there. Can't be with the chemicals in a rattlecan. End result In Hardness is like a 5 out of 10.
Yes....a good clear helps.uv resistance and TOP hardness. Like a skin.... break that skin and forget it. A rock chip will turn into a rabbit hole rapidly. Not to mention color matching and future fixes..
I get it though. And I agree. U can get a nice looking result with care and time. But after the hours and materials... is it really worth it? A gallon of auto paint would only double your material cost in color/excluding clear /primer. And when the double cost is about 70 bucks.........also noting a much greater range in color manipulation. Endless actually.

I’ve seen it done both ways at body shops. I prime over it again will sealer primer.
Filler will not stick to 400g primed. Typically it's at least 80g grind at bare metal or 80g with epoxy DTM primer if your metal is pretty trashed and rusted
Doesnt matter how it comes out. It wont last or hold up outside. Waste of time/money.

I agree it won't last unless you garage keep it, never keep it in the sun for too long and wash and wax it weekly. I did this with a clear and it still faded checked and chipped in two years. Had I spent a little more money on a quality paint it would still look great some 10 years later and I would be sanding the car down to do it all over again. That all said not bad for a quick fix on a beater.
I have done mine outside, and I am in minnesota, mine has held up just well.. I have to disagree with these comment's
@@Stormmaniac how long ago? mine looked great for about two years then it just slowly started failing. for the amount of work I invested in prep it feels silly that I didn't just use a good quality paint for like a $120 more.

On the floor where I then rinse it away when done. I wet the floor before I paint.

I think one of the cheaper ceramic coatings with UV protection is worth a try to see if it would help preserve the paint.
