Just wanted to say thanks for the air pressure tips. most of the time I get it pretty right but every now and then I get a dry effect and now I've got some good advice to work with. Thanks!

I'm 73 now, l used to paint cars . I used a jga 502 paint gun . I'd start my color coat off at 30 psi waiting 15 minutes between coats. I would lower the pressure on the second and third coats. Then start my clear coat the same way but started at 27 psi. Dropping it on each coat . I would test the paint and clear on the paper between coats by putting my finger. If a light print was left , I'd add the next coat . Always shiny and smooth as glass

In the mid 90s, I was painting cellulose in the UK, mostly flat colours (so no base coat plus clear), and was anywhere between 45-55psi, using a high end Devilbiss. Just goes to show how things change!
Thanks for the time you took to give a masterclass in this, I don't really mind about noise cancelling or not, I'd just come down on the side of yes noise cancelling.

Looks good👍🏻 great advice too. I was a professional painter for 27 years, I used to dread that color because of the time involved in making it happen, I used to shoot Sikkens also for a long time. It was even more of a treat doing it in waterborne too🤦🏻‍♂️
I always hated using a gauge and would just adjust my guns by sound and feel, definitely not great advice for someone starting out but I couldn’t stand the “clunkiness” and it always worked for me. The only time I halfway used a gauge was with the digital Satas….. until the batteries died lol. Great content🙌🏻

This is the first video Ive seen of yours. I'm happy I found your channel. Great video learned a few things which is great. I'm new to painting and have only done a little bit of it. My first blend was on my 1969 Bronco I had to weld up the hood that had a cut out from a large scoop and I had to blend the 18" square cut out repair into the two sides and front nose and still keep the worn patina at the edges. It was very difficult, to do in the 6"-12" blend area, but I had a paint shop owner that didnt believe that I did the repair because I'd the difficulty. I just did some rust repair on the rockers and a 2x2" corner of the drivers door and will be blending again into the worn paint of the upper door and quarters. The goal is to keep truck looking untouched. Thanks for the good content I'll be a regular on this channel. Hope I can learn more.

Brian - thanks so much for all the education. I'm 64, and the last car I painted was in the late 70's. Acrylic enamel... I never was a good painter. Thanks to your channel, I'm seeing some real improvements. As for noise canceling - nah. It's useful to hear the sound of the gun. A few questions - while it is obvious when you speed up the video for time's sake, it was not clear to me if you had sped it up or not when you were painting the hood. Do you really move that fast? If so, I've got to adjust some things.

I prefer noise canceling off while you are spraying, even if you are talking. Hearing the environment helps me match that sound when I'm painting. Same goes for speeding up the spraying portion of the video, some of that needs to be at normal pace so beginners understand how fast to move.
If you were just speaking, noise canceling can be on to minimize the background but then it almost sounds like a voiceover or some weird AI thing.
The result on that repair and your teaching of the process are top shelf. Thanks for asking for our opinion.

I would use the top of the fan for blending. Arcing my passes down as I blend back.
Finish up with a drop coat on a regular metalic( not a tri-stage). Arcing the top of my fan to match the curve of the panel . Hiding the blend. Have showed a few young painters how to do this. They always thank me for showing them this technique. 😋

nice tips man. this works well for 3 stage whites as well. couple of things i disagree on somewhat.
doubling up on the red in the mid coat, in some systems can end up being too red, and maybe 2 coats isnt enough, but then putting one more on ends up being too much. i think you have better control over that at mixing normally, depending on the system of course.
the other would be the blend on the door, no stepping? not that it cant work, but like, i teach newer guys that the eyes dont see a horizontal blend as much as a vertical one.
    nice vid car looks great!

I like it better without noise cancellation.
Just saying, I'm making props for movies/photos/exhibitions, which means I have much smaller areas to paint.
But, that also means, a bad spot in the paint, say 1 mm diameter, let's say in a suit of armor, will blow out like crazy in a hero shot. This 1 mm imperfection can then be half a meter on the silver screen in the cinema.
You see, it's pretty important to get stuff flawless, even on smaller parts.
I watched quite a few of your videos, and much of what I learn here can be scaled down to what I need.
Thank you so much for those tips, I'll keep watching!

I prefer no noise cancelation, it's awesome for listening to music. I prefer to hear the difference between the air and materials coming out of the gun. We can still hear your voice fine. If you want to mix it up, no noise cancelation, while spraying and cancel it while talking. Otherwise no noise cancelation.

I do have one question though. I’ve noticed that you don’t have your hose behind your shoulders like I’ve seen so many do and I’ve tended to use this technique. Is there any particular reason why you don’t do that? I’ve gotten my hose into the panel as well and since I started doing this myself I haven’t had the hose get into the panel. I’m just wondering if there is something that I’m missing here

The best spray booth & equipment I ever used was:
    1) Positive pressure from above down to flowing water under grids below the car.
    3) Paint & thinners mix was measured to the micron & then 'Fyods cup' flow rate tested.
    5) The wall were painted with a contact adhering paint that could easily be peeled off when contaminated.
    4) The Devilbys was mind blowing to use as it was a gravity spray gun that ran on warm air @ 10 psi.
In fact, the only thing you needed to watch for, was 'even spray' over .
    5) Then, after spraying, the car was moved into a negative air charged, warm air drying booth for 15 minutes.
Unfortunately I was only allowed to spray my own car in this environment.
Needless to say, that was the very best result I have ever achieved. Ha-ha The car looked like it had a piece of glass covering it. No polishing needed.Ha-ha

Noise while painting and cancellation thru instructions, and please, can you go to real time motion while spraying? So we can get that spray speed motion. Thanks for a very helpful channel.

You have great informative videos, and your presentation is awesome. Noise cancelling is good while you are talking. Either way is good during spraying. Thanks for all your teaching and tips

I’m new to painting. I have a question: when you go to the paint booth to paint do you have a checklist of everything you will need ? The reason I ask is because there are so many details and things needed to paint and I sometimes forget some things

Scottterwood4 says it all. Brilliant finish as usual Brian. And once again thanks for the in-depth explanation on all including the touch up. I have done the hose trick and the coat when doing the roof. There is a whole new use for tape. Ha ha

Hello. I didn't mind the NC being on when you were talking, though there was quite a bit of clipping with NC on and more background noise, perhaps from the filtering. Being able to hear the air / spraying was beneficial and with the NC on this was reduced, a bit too far. I tried on both headphones and with PC speakers and I think my headphones worked better with NC off. I think the speakers worked a bit better with NC on as there was a bit more ambient sound with the speakers than headphones, which I was surprised about. I would pick NC OFF if I only had one option. Your vocal audio level is clear and well above the background in just about every occasion, whether speakers or headphones. Maybe the vocal audio is a fraction harder to hear when you are closer to the booth's extraction system, but I'd still take this over the losss of the spraying. Hope that's ok?
The finish on the car is amazing. It looks like liquid colour! I also really liked that you spoke about the imperfections and how to deal with them. Also the whole premise of the video was interesting to see how to blend the complex colours and coats, thanks. Am storing this info away!!

Ty for this great insight and taking the time to compare the 2. I will work on the setting of disabled nc to get better audio.

Brian you are great at explaining things. I learnt so much from your videos. Especially the one you did about clear base coat and blending. Its a an amazing technique that many lainters don't know about. I honestly wouldn't paint a car without doing this now.
Keep up the great videos my friend. A the best for. England 😎👍
