When my son was little, I got him a battery powered motorcycle, that really looked real. A friend of mine was a custom painter. He painted the tank on it black, then used some stencils to airbrush red skulls on it, then shot gold metal flake over it. Then he taped off a flame pattern and sprayed branydywine over the rest. It was awesome. It was bandywine metal flake with gold metal flake flames with ghost skulls that showed up at certain angles. That was the coolest thing a boy could have gotten for his 4th birthday. He also got a motorcycle jacket with a Harley patch on it.

Thats the classic combination. Usually it's sprayed over gold because that gives it the warm glow. I think it would be a bit flat over a solid color like grey primer. Good experiment, thanks agin GT these ongoing combinations are a great resource.

I did a guitar that was very interesting.
Rattle can gold base, Rustoleum gold glitter, then I started with that Duplicolor Paint Shop Clear Coat that you get from Auto Zone.
I then got some Voodoo Violet candy concentrate off eBay, and mixed it into some of the clear, and shot it over the gold glitter. It turned out amazing!
The most difficult part of the whole thing was finding a combination of paints that didn’t react with each other, but it was a novice way to achieve a seriously cool old school, low rider/chopper/hot rod style look without anything more intensive than a $15 Harbor Freight spray gun.

I like to go easy on the pearl. Gold is richer than aluminum. I did candy red over bright silver and then thought, why not over large metal flake? Then I thought why not white base with large silver flake but not too heavy, 70’s muscle car vibes. Painting fun!
Even though I have done lots of painting I still enjoy watching you experiment. Thanks

White is great for keeping the candy a brighter hue. A real crazy look is candy over faux chrome.
I’m thinking of doing a candy blue over patterns utilizing different reflective qualities for a boogie van project, also root beer brown and gold’s blah blah, decisions decisions 🥳😁 I’ve never done a boogie van style. Mostly single or two tone or goofy flames. Should be interesting.
Was going to do flames on a Ford Pinto wagon from the back forwards but life got in the way of that one and I passed the car along.
Seen someone else do a sedan and I was thrilled. 😂 fun times .

To me on video the red candy over the gold has a very very minor darker shade, but has a more deeper warmer tone to it. Over the silver it has more od a flatter washed out tone to it. Best way for me to describe it would be. If you painted the fender one uniform candy red, taped off the left side and left it out in the sun for several months and the right side faded slightly.

It was near impossible in the video to tell if it came out different from side to side. That said, it wasn't hard to see where the transition was. I've always thought that if I were to paint my car after priming it with light gray primer, it would look different than if I used the brown primer. This confirms for me the difference would be there, even if it's subtle. Thanks!
