Another high quality video! Like mentioned below its a surprise you don't have more subscribers. Keep up the fire you will continue to gain momentum over time. Looking forward to your next video already!
Thanks brother, and thanks again for sending me that GTX 260 Core 216 🙏
Had to leave my like! Great content!
im glad i found your channel its really cool to find the videocards of my youth
I love how you review graphics cards. Easily becoming one of my favorite review channels. Can't wait to see what GPUs you benchmark next!
Terascale seems to have some great cards ruined by poor drivers, they're brilliant for the games they have support for but without bug fixes like Fermi they seem to be getting left in the dust... But if you can find one cheap the performance doesn't seem too bad. Great review once again.
Jes,i bougt a Asus triple Slot card Edition of this Card for 37€,its Not jet arived so im interestet how it will perform
Budget-Builds Official ruined by poor devs
Theese are the channels who deserve tons of suscribers. As a small content creator like you, i can realise how much efford you are making to make this content. i wish you the best
bro!
Thanks bro. I really appreciate it.
Damn. Good stuff!
Love the videos!
Dude, your content is GOLDEN. Just don't forget us when you hit 1 mil subs.
Very informative and well made video. good job man
Stumbled across this little gem of a video in my recommended video list. Semi-classic GPUs are always exciting and I remember my Crossfire 6970s very fondly. You get a big thumbs up and +1 subscription from me.
In particular, I like the fact that you included frame times. It's often left out in reviews, but it's important for getting an idea of how a game ‘feels’ when played.
Looking forward to more quality stuff from this channel. Cheers.
You deserve more subs, great video as always!
you sir deserved my sub..well done!
Nice video as always 10/10
I love your videos, greetings from Spain
awesome videos. enjoyed very much of them.
you really deserve more subscribers and views, there is soo much effort in this great job!
I really appreciate it 👍
thx, keep doing what you're doing really love it!
Like on this video is a must for me. I remember how we bought one of these for my brother secondhand in mid 2011. Seller claimed it was broken (it overheated very fast), so we got it for sum around your 10 dollars, I inspected it and found out only fan header was burned out. We got Accelero TT cooler on it and also managed to unlock to full HD6970. Little bit of tweaking got it to same exact numbers as you have. It was pretty solid card for a long time, it even played BF4 on decent frames.
About that fine wine, I have a feeling it refferences only to GCN based cards.
I like this channel;always good content !
There is no need to give names but you already pass the quality of the video for the majority of the RUclipss who does this type of videos.(all the related channels) The voice became like a glove to the video. Top notch on the voiceover and the story :)
p.s. today I`ve checked my HD 6950 to see if i can install the drivers and tip-top F2P Tech uploads a video with HD 6950 :)
You have a key to my room?did you looked at my stash? =)
Thanks Daniel, you know I’m always watching you. Look up at your “smoke alarm” and say hi 👋
I LOVE THIS CARD
Bought it second hand and gave it as a Xmas Present to my Best friend which he is so happy for the upgrade from a shitty 550Ti which to him sucks ass.
The 6950 Power Color rocks all games and looks outstanding.
ATI is the best I love them and they wopn my heart after I have bought so many cards and All brand names..
MatroxG400Max in the past and Mystix's card and Voodoo2's back in the day just won my heart.
I loved the details and the Voodoo5 on a 3.2Gig system was Outstanding.
Loved those cards..
I also love AMD over Intel..
Nice videos for the oldies ;P
I recently bought a brand new old stock reference 6950 and flashed it to a 6970. Fun!
I had a Sapphire 6950 2GB in the first iteration of my current system. It was one of the dual fan cards.
I unlocked the extra shaders and effectively made it into a 6970. I was able to get it to run at the 6970's stock speeds. Really nice performance when considering the price.
Back then it only cost me about $200 to buy! And such a smooth performer in the titles at the time (Crysis 2, Metro 2033, Call of Duty Black Ops (2), Mass Effect 3 and so on)
I used it alongside an overclocked FX-8120 and 16 GB of RAM.. RAM-prices wasn't extreme back then, so 16 GB could set you back around $100. Such a wonderful time to build a PC back then! I remember almost spending more on the case itself than the graphics card
I had an HD 6950 first in my Phenom II x4 965 BEsystem. It worked great at the time. Inlayer upgraded the CPU to an FX 8350 and added a second HD 6950 for crossfire. System served me well up until last year. I "upgraded" to a used i7 2600k and got a GTX 1080. I'd love to see a crossfire review and an 6970 review as a follow up to this video! Keep up the good work!
Jay Arre it was a small jump from the FX8350. But I put it in quotes because I upgraded using hardware that was already 6 years old and not the latest and greatest. Haha
I will be waiting for that Terascale vs Fermi video! Fermi even has DX12 enabled so it will be a very interesting comparision for budget gamers
ruclips.net/video/7DUhF1eOcIs/видео.html u have something like this.
The DX12 support is rather academic.
amo tus vídeos de este tipo, siempre quise hacer ese contenido, pero mi presupuesto no me alcanza, saludos desde Argentina
It's hard to see someone testing out old stuff properly. I give you props. the 6950 could also be biosmodded, the only problem with it being a budget option is the power consumption which requires a more robust PSU, if it was a little more power friendly, it would have been a very good budget card. I am using 260x's and 265's in budget builds as I can go with 430/450 evga psus that are cheap. Thanks again for the video.
Both the 6950 and 6970 cards that used blower fans had super stupidly small exhaust outputs. I cut an inch off the rear housing and pushed it out a thirds slot and it ran great.
One of your best videos yet imo :). I'd love to see this card with the 6970 bios pitted against the 750ti, just for fun (and science, of course :P!)
Thanks. Yes, we’re not done with it. Or maybe a newer low AMD card?
F2F Tech an r7 360 would be good too, I suppose
1 more sub here :), nice video man, i also still have a msi 6950 but i have it unlocked to 6970. I think the difference is huge. can't wait to see your results
From my preliminary testing it’s less than 10%, not really worth doing a video on it. I’m sure I’ll use it again in another video
@@Face2FaceHardware Hehe, yeah on paper doesn't sound much, but as you may have noticed, when running games at the 25-35 fps ranges, every frame counts! :P
pd: btw, i just saw the 6900 roundup you did on pubg and you have some numbers for the 6970 so am happy with it :). its hard to find current benchmarks on older video cards, it helps me to find out if my system is somehow bottlenecked somewhere when fps dont match mines.
6:07 Is that a 6950? *YES*
lol but really tho did he really say that? xD
HaloNoobGrunt Yes, he said that.
I like the back plates. I collect video cards and have dozens. I keep loads of thermal pads on hand. A lot of the reference design cards with the switch can be flashed with a Sapphire bios and unlock to a 6970. Fun stuff.
Awesome 👍. The 6970 Bios was causing issues, but I found a 6950 Bios that allows for the unlocked shaders. Works perfect.
This brings back memories :)
Running this card on a very old AMD FX 8120 + 6950 setup i was still able to play GTAV at 1080p, even though most of the system was five years old.
My card could unlock the shaders of the 6970, but not the clockpeed. But i could go the max overclock the default driver allowed and crank every setting to max (840mhz possibly? going from memory here...)
Going above that (ie 6970 speeds) crashed the card though.
So i ended up with a hybrid: 6970 shader count, 6950 speed
:)
Thumbed up for dropping the [H]ardforum name.
Damn. Them Uruks are savage. I thought the last vid Easter was bs lol
I loved the early run of this card. Unlocked to the 6970 with a simple flash, and the dual BIOS made it danger free.
I had one when it was new, mine unlocked to 6970 and was beast at that time. But damn it was loud.
I sold the exact same card yesterday. Mint as new condition. Unlocked to 6970
How much did you sell it for ?
@@KanekiKen-gk2il this comment is 3 yearsold
Your right about the aggressive pricing. I had my heart set on a Superclocked GTX 570 but the 6950 was waaaaaay cheaper and I had to get a psu too and stay in a budget. I think I grabbed mine for 279.99 or something and it was the overclocked HIS Edition. Still a solid card for a lot of titles at 1080p aside from some of the latest most demanding titles. Also you can grab one for like 50 dollars on ebay now.
I had a 6970 when they came out with a Phenom x6. Hours of playing BF3 in the summer, omg the heat and the noise. I took it apart 3 times to replace and check the thermal paste but the heat kept messing with the thermal pads, cooked itself to artifact death.
Still rocking my HD 6970 and playing modern games : ). Low to Med settings on 1080 tho. 30-120 fps+ depending on the game.
eu ainda tenho uma dessa, ela parou de funcionar, consertei ela colocando no forno para refazer as soldas da GPU, jogo RE2 Remake com ela
Was using this card until 2017 and played CS:GO as Global Elite with it. (60hz monitor only)
It was a really great card!
Looking foward to a benchmark video with the unlocked 6970 bios.
came in to a little am1 athlon system.. using it now with the lil hd6850... better then the 4670 or 3870 i have laying around.
thanks
actually interesting to see the temps seem really good.
Thanks. Keep in mind my ambient testing temp was really low.
I still run 2 of these cards in crossfire (2gb vram) and still love them. They run the games I play the most on MAX settings (shogun 2, kerbal) and can play other games like Rome total war and subnautica on near max settings @ 30fps. Granted it probably helps i have an i5 4690k oc to 4.75ghz and i only play at 1080p. Really wished it was still supported... Next upgrade will be a 1080ti when the price comes down lol. Im curious what the % gain will be haha
My first ever real graphics card.
Before this I only had some shitty 100€ multimedia cards or integrated graphics.
It lasted me until 2014 when the lack of VRAM started to cause issues in some newer and modded games.
Edit: You also used the 2600k which I had in the same build. Man that build was good back in the day.
What software is being used to create that cool green overlay with the frametime graph
MSI afterburner
I've got one of these or a 7*** series card in need of repair that I still didn't get round to repairing since they came out. It kept blanking the screen out part way through a game, requiring a hard reset. I thought overheating although, Afterburner seemed to show that fine, I thought maybe VRAM not fairing well to heat? I took the Gelid cooler& RAM sinks, put it on, still the same. A solid capacitor top fell off the back line portion of the card behind VRM, when inspecting for any visibly damaged components. XFX model. Couldn't be bothered, just went & bought 2x GTX 660 in Sli. Later used the Gelid cooler on my R9 290X with their new bracket. I was meant to fix it, just never got around to it. I have a feeling there's more to it than that 1 capacitor. Because the cooler came off, couldn't RMA. It's got the BIOS switch.
I bough one of these for $18 a couple weeks ago, it's not bad for the price.
Great deal 👍
My friend lend me this card for my new build (until i buy a new gpu). I did the 6970 bios mod, thermal paste change, overclock and the gpu is kicking ass.
BTW great video, i would like to see one with the 6970 bios mod.
Expect up to 10% more performance.
Dude why you don't have a lot of subscribers??? You should have 300,000 at least:(
I love your content, keep like that, dude and very soon you'll have those subscribers I'm saying
Thanks a lot. I don’t release videos often enough, which helps with gaining audience. These videos take many hours to make and finding time is hard enough. I’m trying though.
Well, actually it is true, but bro your videos are dope, are damn good edited and even though you don't upload videos often, in my opinion is better quality than quantity
If you ever run out of ideas you could re-test everything in GNU/Linux. The open source driver for these cards is still being worked on and they'll have OpenGL 4.5 support soon.
Very cool. I didn’t know that. I’ll keep that in mind.
Nice
I'm still running this card. I had an R9 290, but it died a week out of warranty, so I had to swap this back in.
6:06 i actually believed you. lol
i choose to believe! orcs are well-informed tech-wise.
It does do that. I had a gtx 760 2gb at one time and it mocked me for having it. The gtx 760 2gb is slightly more powerful than the hd 6950.
Great vid! Lots of great info. I am still currently using this card but I am finding that I may need to upgrade.. any suggestions on what to get?
What does the rest of your system look like? Also, what’s your budget?
Is this what you are looking for?

Oh and Running WIN 10 17134 build 64-bit
Yes. Nice system. What’s your budget?
What would be a good upgrade from this card? A gtx 1060?
Gave this card to a friend for Xmas I picked it up for only $40 dollars last summer.
Outstanding card bang for buck.
oh i remember having this card for 4 years. I could unlock it to HD 6970, OC it to 1GHz on core and 1370 MHz (5480) on memory. It was a great great GPU.
my first gpu I used back in 2012 was the 6870 with around 1 GB of GDDR5 VRAM
How do you think it'd perform in Crossfire or is it worth it? I have the HIS IceQ 2GB model of the 6950 on a Z77 board. No processor or Hard drive for it currently. But I picked two of them up with a bunch of other stuff for $100.
Honestly Crossfire support is limited for newer games. Anything pre 2016 should be okay, as long as the game supports crossfire. Really depends on the games you play, but in 2018 I’m not sure if crossfire for this card is worth it.
Hello!
Can you help me? Did you just change the thermal paste, or change the thermal pads too? If you change the thermal pads, how thick were those?
Thank you in advance
Just the paste. I would imagine the pads are .5mm or 1mm thick.
those heat sinks look pretty much exactly like the one on the R9 290x cards XD
the music outro plz damn metal lol i like it,nice video tho,but for me i advise people to stay away from Terascale or Fermi cards they are so old and don't support the latest tech. TS was amazing for ATI but nothing lasts forever.
i have a GIGABYTE HD 6950 WindForce 1 gb and i cant go more of 900 clock 1325 memory....any help????
Awesome XD
what is the program in the top right to look at everything likes temps etc
MSI afterburner with RTSS
how to make the mod BIOS in vga hd 69 ** / hd67 **?
Have you thought about flashing it to the 6970's BIOS?
It gets identical (or at least within margin of error-identical) performance if you can hold it. I had to increase my voltage a little to make it stable but it's really worth it imo
It even performed better than the console GPUs in a couple of games (w/ same resolution and same or higher settings).
I actually did. I kept having memory issues though. Black screens and pixelation issues. I found out that the memory on the 6970 evidently uses different timings, so it could’ve been causing the issues. I ended up finding a 6950 Bios that unlocks all of the shaders, it’s pretty close once you up the clock speeds and increase the power limit a little bit
This kind of videos is fun to watch! I had a 6570 , can you make a video about it? Please? Thank you! :)
I don’t have one, but I’ll keep my eye out.
F2F Tech hey thank you! You earned a new sub!
Please make a video about the unifl drivers
Needs custom drivers. Makes sense though. The HD6950 and HD6970 were completely unique GPUs. The HD6870 was similar in architecture to far more GPUs. It would have made more sense to focus on those GPUs since less code work would effect more users
loved this card of mine, u could flash it to a 6970 too, i gave it away to a friend though:)
x2 HD 6950 crossfire, i7 2600k oc'd to 4.2Ghz. My first ever built PC. Still working to this day next to my 2080ti build :').
Great review. AMD could use another Terascale like architecture. Smaller cost effective gpu's. GCN is really getting long in the tooth.
Hahah alright then I don"t think they actually said that, funny gag though. Great vid too !
Can’t fool you 😉
i had a 6970 for 4 years
it was absolute beast played BF4 at max 1080p 60fps
It is an interesting review nearly almost 8 years later, I was actually hoping to see how it would perform in 2017/2018 games in crossfire or trifire modes with whatever drivers made available, does it even work in crossfire/trifire at all in games like BattleField One, Prey and etc? I have a 7870 with 270x in crossfire on a QX9650 CPU on P5E Deluxe board 16GB RAM running FarCry 4 and it was quite interesting on 3 monitor eyefinity setup 1080P, playable still and etc.
Since it’s last driver was 16.2.1. There’s a good chance none of the games mentioned would work. Hard to say, but it’s something I’d like to test in the future.
Thanks for an awesome review. BTW, whats with the low ambient of 13C? you have got to be living in Canada or Norway with such ambient temps and using Celsius instead of Fahrenheit... LOL.
Thank you!
Actually North Carolina 😉 it’s been a cold winter here and the room I test in cost me a ton to heat, as I only have a heat pump, which doesn’t work in temps this low. So I just put on a jacket.
Lol... I can totally understand. It was your use of Celsius which got me thinking that you were probably a fellow Canuck.
I'm really noob, but I'm running the same card at 920/1449 stock voltage. Is it any good?
I had this card and it was a beast, sapphire brand, then I tried flashing a custom BIOS to unlock shader cores to turn it into a 6970 and ended up killing it
Yeah, it’s best to use a modified 6950 Bios. That way your just unlocking the extra shaders, and not messing with anything else. The 6970 uses different memory timings from what I’ve heard. I experienced this first hand. Had a lot of memory induced lockups with the 6970 Bios installed.
Great video. Pls Make with hd8570
Thanks. 5870 or 8570?
@0:49 it wasn't fused off, and can be flashed to unlock the full die.
I'm still using mine. I have already upgraded my rig last month except for the video card. Since GPU prices are still ridiculously inflated and only 1030's are readily available in my area, I guess I'm gonna be stuck with my 8 year old 6950 for at least a few more months. Good thing it's thesis time so I don't really feel the need to upgrade one at the moment. Great vid! Got yourself a subscriber here.
Ubibug did it again.
what power supply are you using
Please tell me where u got the driver update for it lol
those 6950s scale really well in crossfire
Hey people, i have a Radeon HD 6990 with two 2GB chips and games like battlefield 4 and crysis 3 do use both but doom 2016 isnt using the second one, does anyone know how to force the game to use both?
i have Sapphire HD 9650 2GB GDDR5 DX11 2xDVI HDMI mini 2DP PCI-E since it was released.. pretty good card, R6 Siege cries that it does not recognize it but the game runs well (not on ultra of course)..
Someone is selling for 30usd should i buy(not for gaming just for backup)
this was my card a gigabyte 6950 2gb for the last 7 years and it did wonders and aged like wine (RIP my love) i didnt die i actualy sold it with my old pc still kicking ass. now i got 1060 6gb also gigabyte
20scream20 I'm glad you made another comment mentioning what you've upgraded to. I STILL have my 6950 and it's keeping me from playing newer games. And when playing Fortnite on medium settings, well, let's say I get a bit frustrated. I have played on High and it looks decent but the gameplay is super choppy.
"Fine Vine" -> CGN architecture 7XXX+
I still use a Sapphire HD6950 Dual Fan and it can run almost every game if its overclocked. I can play GTA on very high.
Which version of it has 3 fans?
Did they drop the ATI branding with that card?
Yes.
