  • Very detailed video, step by step instructions how to replace clutch on Volkswagen Sharan 7N 2.0 TDI engine. Also can be applied to its twin brother Seat Alhambra.
    Important update! Following comment from "Bee ShopCS", while putting left driveshaft into place, instead of hitting on a brake disc, if you are struggling to insert spline into wheel bearing - insert outer joint first (because it's easier to align splines while the other end is loose), and then connect inner joint, but make sure that it's all sits straight and you don't break the thread.

    Just finished a dmf and clutch replacement on a 2.0tdi Seat Leon. This tutorial is great and helped a lot. For anyone wondering if its possible to carry out the work without an engine harness, the answer is yes! A block of wood atop a jack to support the engine will hold it in place just fine. Getting underneath is a little difficult with the jack in the way but you can get the clearance you need to do it. Good luck to anybody giving it a shot :)

    Thanks for the incredible detail of doing the clutch. I've been reviewing videos so I could do mine, but they all have been either partial tear down, or star wipe to it being installed. They would drop the transmission, then suddenly everything is off, missing what came off and what not. I appreciate it big time taking the time to show every step.

    I just finished this job thanks for the inspiration. The hardest part for me was mating the gearbox back with the engine. After about 6 hrs of messing around it went in I cant remember how as I was so tired but relieved. I cant get 1st and 2nd gears very well but I think the shift linkage needs set up again. was going to do the EGR at the same time but another day as it still wasn't that much better access with the gearbox removed. Thanks again for a great video and commentary.

      You're very welcome, glad if it helped! I had the same issue with the gear change. You're right, its the linkage, cables that come from selector, the one that you have to twist and turn to disconnect - as you connect it, push it in deeper.

    I pulled mine today. I had only watched half your video and not to the part of having to rotate the differential end up counterclockwise. I put a high reach hydraulic jack under the diff end and rolled it up. Then wiggled it out.
    To put in tomorrow I will rig off the Engine crossmember brace similar to how you did and lift it straight up with a small chain come along. My transmission jack was basically worthless lol. Glad I’m a union millwright and know how to rig loads into tight spots.
    I’m going back in with a CR170 clutch and flywheel from Europe. It’s the strongest dual mass setup available.
    Thanx again for the video!

    Awsome guide. I just finished replacing a clutch on a 2012 VW Caddy Maxi and this guide was a big help. However on my Caddy there was no need to losen stearing or lower ball joint. I just losend the centerbolt on the wheelhub and then removed all inner bolts on the drive shaft. It was then very easy to remove the drive shaft. Just lift the inner end up and tap gently on the outer end. The entire job took about 12 hours to complete. Most painful was the get the gearbox back in. I have no special tools and used a peice of wood to support the engine and gearbox from the top. Thank you and yout wife for affort on producing this great guide.

      You're very welcome Johnny! What a coincidence, I also just replaced clutch for another time for this Sharan (he's on 420.000 miles now). I had a pain to do it twice in a row! On Tuesday I fitted new clutch and flywheel, put it back together just to find out that I'm not going anywhere because clutch isn't working!
      Next day I took it apart again and realised that clutch kit was wrong, got another one from GSF, luckily flywheel was correct... Two days - two clutches! I'm in pain now 🤪

    Nicely done, you took your time and were very careful with every bolt and component.
    one big mistake you made which was something Iearned after dozens of clutches I have fitted.
    Always Always put the gearbox back with 2-3 bolts and secure then an engine mount to secure the box then bleed the clutch right away to see if you have a good clutch, if you do brilliant. If you don't and you have to reassemble you don't have many bits and pieces to take off again to see the problem, apart from that great job!!!

    +Vasile Mărîi Thank you :) For some reason RUclips doesn't allow me to reply to your comment, so I just post it here. Flywheel seemed to be fine, although I don't know what is the exact procedure of checking it properly, but driving felt ok, like there is nothing wrong, no judder. I only had the noise while pressing and releasing clutch and originally I wanted to replace just clutch and release bearing. But, I didn't know what brand was my clutch and flywheel and I wanted to do it in one go, and considering my mileage (146.000 miles = 234963 km), the guy from VW car parts shop also told me the "stories" and convinced me to get new flywheel as well.

    • @alanpassat6759
      @alanpassat6759 7 лет назад

      WheelsAndMotors In the UK we replace four times as many flywheels as anywhere else in Europe. A DMF is designed to last the life of the car. As is a clutch, but people abuse clutches through bad driving. Unless the flywheel is knocking, I don't replace. You need to raise car higher to remove gearbox, as the method you use of lowering gearboxe then engine risks bending input shaft

    • @wawayltd
      @wawayltd  7 лет назад

      Paul Passat Thank you for your comment. I will blame the car parts store guy - he convinced me to replace flywheel, although there are some bad stories on Internet forums + I didn't know the brand and I wanted to do it in one go.
      I agree about lowering - perhaps I should have lower it as low as I can straight away. But unfortunately, size of my garage doesn't alow me to raise this Sharan any higher - that was max - it was sticking into top shelves with its roof railings :)

    Thank you very much for this great video. I did mine over the weekend along with my clunky driveshaft as it was coming off anyway.
    My only tip for anyone else going for it is that driveshafts come out inner first and go back in outer first. That way you can jam the disk to do the inner bolts.
    Also look up how to reset the gear linkage. Easy peasy.
    The great thing about following your video was that when I'd finished there were no leftover parts!
    Edit to say invest in a cheap impact wrench. I got one from Aldi. Removing the 2 drive shaft caps with a long 6mm allen bit on an impact wrench makes it so much easier. The gearbox will slide out after being turned about 30°. Mine had to come back out a few times to work out why it stopped working. Turned out one of the locator pins on the clutch had fallen out and jammed the spring after 100 miles! It was a bit hard to diagnose but I'm now an expert gearbox remover...

    Mr Bolts... your epic mate... have already shown me how to change timing belt on Skoda Superb 1.9 tdi (went well - Not had a problem since 😁) now showing me how to change the clutch on my touran 2.0 tdi... without you I would have been at the mercy of garages (was quoted £500 for Skoda timing belt - did it for about £150 with the couple tools)
    You have now given me confidence to do this clutch and dual mass flywheel change - your bolt by bolt (😂) instructions are fantastic and hilarious at the same time - the way you leave all mistakes and write updates makes you (for me) the best RUclips mechanic I've watched. Keep up the good work - living legend. 👍👍

    • @wawayltd
      @wawayltd  6 лет назад

      My flywheel was ok actually. The only reason I replaced it... Actually there were 2 reasons :) First - I heard some bad stories about flywheel falling apart, because apparently they recommended to be changed together with clutch. Not everyone agrees to that, I had comment below saying that it's a waste of money to change flywheel for no reason and they meant to last long... Second reason - I didn't know what brand I had before I took it apart, didn't know if it matches, so decided to put all new.
      In my previous car - Audi, I had problems with flywheel. I had bad judder when moving off or even going from 1st to 2nd. I think it happens when on dual-mass springs don't work anymore.

    Hi there!
    DEFINITELY THE MOST DETAILLED WORK ON CLUTCH ONE CAN FIND!!!
    First of, good job ! and yes you are a guy with great patience, because even if you keep on saying " easy " , it was a struggle to put down the gearbox , but it was your first attempt too ! ,
    So now thanks to you we know we have to rotate the gearbox upward before droppping it!
    You make our life much simplier with your printable pdf version ! GOD BLESS YOU! IT WILL BE FOR US LIKE A KIND OF BIBLE (OR CORAN OR TORAH ) for doing clutches!
    Could you tell me How far did you tilt your engine to the side (15 ° ??? )
    Could you tell me How much clearance do we need between the bottom of the gear box and the floor so we can pull horizontally the gearbox once on the floor (40 cm mini clearance?) ?
    Again your video will be seen millions times, because like i said , there is no such a detailed step by step guide!
    Take care you and your favorite helper (your wife)
    Bye!
    :-)

    • @wawayltd
      @wawayltd  3 года назад

      Dear Farid thank you very much for all these nice words!
      I don't think I would be able to tell exact measurements, like degrees of engine tilt. When I lift the engine - I look how far I can lift so I don't brake anything, when I lower it, I think it was as far as engine support beam allowed me and of course look around as you have things that are still connected and sticking out of the engine.
      As for lifting the car, I have 2 trolley jacks that have maximum hight of 52cm. I didn't lift them to the maximum - if I do my garage hight will not allow me open bonnet. The higher you can get is the better. That jack adaptor you see in the video is too high and didn't allow me to simply lower gearbox that's why I had to improvise.
      The trickiest part is put the gearbox back - you definitely need a second person.
      The car in the video is on 422.000 miles now. By now I have replaced clutch 2 more times. When I did second time, I removed subframe (I have a video about subframe too). It was advised by someone in comments. There was much more space for moving gearbox around and you don't need to play "tetris". However on my third time I decided that removing subframe doesn't give as much advantage as it gives extra hassle.
      And few more things. When you put driveshaft back into wheel hub, all that hitting you see in the video with a hammer is not necessary. I'm going to cut it out. Simply move brake disc up and down to align splines.
      Also on my last clutch change I ordered parts from AutoDoc. Flywheel was ok, but the clutch pressure plate and friction disc where wrong. When I fitted it I didn't pay attention that it was too tight fit, I reassembled everything to find out that clutch doesn't work. So I had great pleasure to do clutch twice in 2 days as I bought correct parts locally from GSF.
      Don't do my mistake - make sure parts are correct!
      When you reconnect gear selector cables, that connection that you twist and turn - make sure you put it in all the way, otherwise gear selection won't be as smooth.
      When you done - try it first with wheels off the ground. I'm glad I did it when I fitted wrong clutch.
      Good luck! It's a bit fiddly, but it's doable (not a rocket science 😉)
