Great instructional video as usual.. I replaced the failed Dual mass flywheel on my Skoda Octavia Tdi with a four piece National brand solid flywheel clutch kit. The set only cost me €200, I also replaced the rear crankshaft oil seal, and the clutch input shafts seal... Managed another 80 thousand miles of issue free driving before selling the car... As I recall, the Valeo single mass clutch kit was twice the price at €400 and the Dual Mass replacement clutch kit was over €1000.. The National brand clutch kit has lasted over 130 thousand miles since it was fitted, and is still going strong... Yes Valeo make good stuff, but it's way overpriced..

Thanks Leon, I have been really worried that I'd made a huge mistake when I did the clutch on our Disco td5. We were getting that horrible screeching noise that happens when someone doesn't lube the spigot bush properly. Anyhow, we changed the clutch at the same time but I couldn't afford to do the DMF. I tried to check it and it did roughly what your new one did. The clutch I took out wasn't too bad and I figured to just go for it as it's our only car. I feel much better now at it was a really heavy job I hope not to have to do again in a hurry.

I think you can still check it on the engine. You should still be able to feel the dead zone or slack. Most dmf manufacturers will specify how many teeth the deadzone should spread across.
Am i correct? I saw what you did but i cannot feel how the spring is pushing against.

DMF's are used to prevent harsh vibrations going through the gearbox. I'll rather pay extra and have a DMF than have to replace / rebuild the gearbox.

When mechanics install a new clutch do they ordinarily check the flywheel? Asking as I purchased a car a few weeks ago which had a new clutch installed in Dec due to previous owner burning it out, and the clutch and gear shifting is a nightmare. The dealer has booked the car in with the garage he uses for another new clutch install...but I'm concerned the flywheel is shot and the same issue will happen again if the flywheel is not replaced.

Now then, I had a mk4 Golf tdi fitted with a SMF, drove ok, a little jumpy pulling away in 1st but after that no problem.
I now have a Leon mk2 Tdi FR 140 ( 1P1 ) with a DMF nearing the end of it's service life, getting a bit clunky. Can you see any probs fitting a SMF ? I keep hearing bad comments about long term damage to transmission etc, why? surely that's down to clutch control.
The Leon has done just over 100K but I would say when I bought the car it had been fitted with a towbar so probably got some abuse.

I had a dual mass flywheel and changed it at 130,000 miles as I was doing the first clutch as a precaution. Pull away in second with the wheels spinning see how long they last. Drive the car normally. The centering bush has cracked and half gone the flywheel surface is off centre and must have had a lot of vibration. 190,000 kilometres ain’t bad in my book.

I have been experiencing a problem with the DQ250 gearbox for the last 10,000 km and it sounds like this:
When the clutch engages there is a clunk, the gear shifts are very linear and nothing is felt.
I have noticed this phenomenon also when I go, in any gear, take my foot off the accelerator and put it back on, a clank is heard.
I'll leave some videos below with what I'm trying to explain.
I'm guessing it would be the dual mass flywheel, the car having 210k km.
The dog bone and mounts are ok.
Replaced the CV Joints but nothing changed.
The sounds appears when you try to reproduce the noise which gets louder and louder the more you try to reproduce it
Also when i'm in idle i feel sometimes some vibratians and when i put it in D, the vibration dissaperes.
On VCDS there's no errors from mechatronic unit.
    What do you guys think?

I limped it home only reving to. 1500 rpm. Sounded and felt dreadful! I needed to use it still but in the return trip I redlined it and did some violent gear changes several times. Yo ! High 5s Matey..
What exactly does the DMF do ? apart from providing a device to bolt the pressure plate to ?
Why does it have to wobble all over the place ?
Honestly, as a motor engineer of some 51 years experience, please tell me what the F**ck does the DMF do ?

@@oldgitsknowstuff essentially it's to reduce torsional vibration through the drivetrain if you look in my video description there is a big write up about it

OK, I'll take that on board.
So it's a dynamic torsional damper. And I thought it was only there to hold the starter ring gear.
There are people who discard the DMF and substitute it for a solid flywheel without any adverse effects. Anyway, thanks again for your help and thank Christ I don't need one. High 5s Matey.

Many of the engines that were fitted with dmf have switched back to solid flywheels in later redesigns.
Manufacturers claimed they were required to prevent crankshafts snapping, but the fact they supplied the same engines with solid flywheels and simpler harmonic balancers shows that wasn't true.
Some engines had solid and dmf fitted to different models in the range at the same time particularly vans/commercial models.
PSA 1.4+ 1.6hdi came with dmf on cars and solid on vans so you could just buy a cheap flywheel and clutch kit for the van model to convert using OEM parts.

Thanks for the video, I've got a DMF on the way out, hoping to fix it over the summer. I'm surprised by how little spring pressure there is even on the new one, I thought they'd be super strong springs, given the amount of impulse torque that they have to absorb.

Watched some expert from a company that makes clutches speak how sideways rocking is absolutely NOT a test and how most even completely good ones will do that, and should in no way be considered a test. Also that very small rotational shift is normal. EDIT : There are often depending on the model 3 types of springs. What you felt is the weak in the start but later down the line of compressing them huge forces happen.

My dual mass flywheel was slipping after 280 000 kilometres (not the clutch lol.) on my Mitsubishi pajero 2008 model and tha clutch was still in good condition. Also had a ton of grease coming out from that flywheel. You can't repair them either. Best is go back to old school single mass , problemmo solved
