Its kinda weird how these "less realistic" games which can hit 4k 60 fps look so much better than "realistic" 4k 30 fps games to me. Art direction is an amazing concept
I just got this game today, can’t wait to play it. I also agree with you, there seemed to be a huge push for realism in games and now we are starting to see a shift back to a more artistic approach and I am here for it.
It's because cel shaded or cartoon graphics use way less resource
I feel like this gen’s biggest problem going forward is going to be the narrow minded focus on “hyper realistic graphics” they’re barely attainable from these studios and frankly not particularly interesting. These are video games. They can afford to be more experimental with the art design and gives a lot more breathing more for performance. There is a reason why Into the Spiderverse and Arcane are praised for their art directions.

Not necessarily. You still need high enough polygon counts and object density, high res textures, good looking effects, etc. Plus depending on the direction, a PBR and GI solution might be used.
There are stylized games with high end visual techniques, and rather realistic games that make things simple while still looking good.

Being a JRPG guy for over 20+ years, I am happy to recommend Scarlet Nexus. The game is such a breath of fresh air. Loving the complex battle system, that easy to handle and interesting in a way of utilizing all the available options, the story (not gonna lie, I love all the references, even got one from Xenogears when seen similiar event involving some stuff with producing things from a human parts and other bizzare stuff), vibrant visuals and upbeat music.
But it has some let-downs which is backtracking (especially if you are 100%-ing the game, doing quests and exchanging presents for a buddies) and not much variety in locations level design and architecture. It's addicting as hell when you are start to digging the futuristic atmosphere and emphasis on combat.
I love these tech review and comparison videos. This one was especially well done, thanks for all the hard work.
This game is extremely fun! The Combat on the PS5 is so smooth and I love how well they used the Dual Sense features! It's so satisfying when taking down enemys. The game also has a really good soundtrack throughout all the worlds.
Man, the dualsense is the best controller I’ve ever tried so far. I’m so glad they kept the symmetrical sticks so i can still play claw
Dual sense is a battery draining machine.. that controller have the WORST battery .. I see myself charging it every single day 😩
I guess if you play non stop. I have a job, wife and two kids so I charge mine maybe once every 2 weeks. Enjoy your summer!

Series S performance was pretty surprising, when playing I didn't notice any frame drops. I guess when you get into the action your are thinking of how to defeat the enemies and you stop paying attention to the framerate that much?
Also didn't notice the lower resolution.

This game is real chill. I unlocked double jump, midair dash, and other stuff in the first couple hours so I don't think it's too bad as far as that goes. I kinda like the combat being gradually rolled out, feels like I can master what they've given me and then they add something else on, feels less overwhelming

Do these games on PS5 actually run at an internal 1080p resolution if you had a 1080p screen or were to switch the system settings to 1080p? I remember in the RE8 video that the minimum resolution mentioned wasn't 1080p which makes me wonder if it could improve performance in RT mode in areas like the swamp and such.
I ordered this last weekend through eBay with a 20% discount voucher, so glad I took the plunge. Clearly performance is great on the PS5/XBsX.
I was sold on the game from the demo and on launch day, Amazon had it for $10 off retail and I had a $15 off coupon as well, and that was after I tried to buy the game at my local Target a week before street date when they had put it out by accident

I just want to say, i would love a DF Retro on Tekken 3, it really holds up well even today 😊 but honestly i do have a personal nostalgia for Tekken 4, 4 is the one i grew up playing with my father, good times 😊

Yep... Astral chain..was a bit deeper...I love that it had moments of slow detective work..mixed with the frantic actual...I think scarlet nexus is missing something like that.

I was amazed at Scarlet Nexus Adaptive trigger functions when I’m playing is kasane I can feel the struggle on the triggers every time I use her telekinesis power

Loving this game and has to be one of the most fun games so far of 2021. Only issue I have is how noticeable the pop in is on all platforms
it looks to be another of the many games developed to the PS4 for the most part, then changed focus to PS5.

The green fog and the stencil outlines looks so similar to how a short hike did it.

I love Thomas videos, he is the one covering most of the new releases from DF, the other DF guys shifted to a more pc/retro content. I love the pc and retro content specially but I always put that content as a bonus, for me DF was always about new games analysis or updates analysis.
When you talked about the "Akira (1998)" reference, I just realize the shot in the No More Heroes 3 Game Award trailer where Travis Touchdown suddenly shows up with his bike is actually calling this Easter Egg reference lol
At 3:57 the hologram at the top right appears to have a solid texture on ps5 and not on series x. Is this the same on all holograms? And if so what is the reason for this?

I would've wanted to but apparently there is no demo on pc for some reason. I'm contemplating whether to buy it or not since I don't usually play these type of games but it does remind me of Astral Chain and that game is awesome.

On pc if i active the v sync the animation dialogue keep dropping fps for no reason. Same thing when a combat start. Im i the only one?
Maybe try Vsync from the graphics driver and not in game. Sometimes i found this helped before i got a Gsync screen.
What do you guys do to the series S, I have played a fair few of the games on mine that you have reviewed or shown comparisons of and they aren't as bad as I perceived they would be going from information that I get from you guys.
If you are talking about resolution, you aren't gonna notice on a 1080 screen which I guess you have, and frame drops of 50-60 are really only noticeable for someone paying attention
The fact that the series S is way less powerful than the PS5/XSX doesn't mean that you are gonna have a bad gaming experience, you only really notice the difference when you have been gaming on 4k for a while

@@Soremwar I played it on my daughters 1080p yesterday cuz they were watching a film downstairs, really prefered playing on the 4K LG downstairs just looked more vibrant, think the HDR makes a lot of difference as the one upstairs don't support it.

This game is great! Also end-game combat gets pretty crazy lol, in the best way possible.
I played the demo on Series X but ended up getting the full version on PS5 because it was on sale. I think it is a better experience on PS5 just for the haptics alone. Using the abilities with that right trigger and the slight resistance with the crackling vibration feels so cool.
Yeah, I love it. It's not overdone, but just adds to the feel of the combat. I really like the way the triggers go slack if you get hit before you finish a psychokenisis attack - you literally feel the disappoinment.
I find it hard to believe your comment do to the fact Xbox has had haptic feedback since the Xbox one controllers... It's okay to like the PS5 more, but no need to lie about not feeling haptic feedback in the Xbox controllers.

@@ThatCarGuy “Adaptive Triggers” and Haptic Feedback in the DualSense are different from “Impulse Triggers” and standard vibration featured in the Xbox One/Series controllers. I use and enjoy both but-whether you want to believe it or not-they ARE different.

@@ThatCarGuy They have haptic feedback in the sense of the more traditional vibration that the DualShock 4’s had. The haptic technology in the DualSense is more like the HD Rumble featured in Nintendo’s Joy-Con and the Adaptive Triggers are unlike any controller I’ve ever used before. You can argue all you want but you are wrong.
tried the demo before it launched, it looks 1440p to me, does the game get patched after launch to get 4k60?
Enjoying this. 15 hrs in. I only wish it had more variety in its environments when you revisit them in later story missions (like change time of day or additional environment fx)

Am questioning the porting quality tbh. Didn't notice any issues early on but by the time you reach Phase 5, you'll start having issues if you try and force your way to 4K resolution, and i'm running on an RTX 3070. Also trying to review my INI tweaks too which is supposed to improve the game's visual quality for those using 1080p monitors, myself included

i wonder if tossing ultra quality FSR on top of the reconstructed image to take it all the way to the panel's 4k resolution would do it any good. i mean, it's a scaler filter, it should still be better than bilinear scaling even if it's working on top of an already reconstructed image. shouldn't it?

Having fun on Series X and not noticing any dips, but I'm playing on an LG CX 65 TV.
Side note, surprised at the background music in the game being a mix of lofi hip hop and other genre's.
You wont notice any dips because that TV supports VRR and so does the Series X
I think dynamic resolution should have a metric similar to framerate. Something akin to a target resolution, an average, a 1.0% low, and a 0.1%.
Some games have little to no perceptible deviation from the target. While others can fluctuate wildly.
How is it on PC?
I would like you to talk a little about what the DualSense experience is like in each game that implements it.
Totally agree with you. DF focuses on tech not gameplay but DualSense and 3D audio is tech in my books

The way he talks about Series S frame drops you would think they are dropping into the teens. It holds up rather well actually.
Yeah, i feel that they tend to exaggerate those drops in any game. Be it ps5 or xbox.
Honestly, for me, drops to the mid 50s are unnoticeable. Runs pretty well on any platform.
It's tom Morgan a single frame drop on Xbox is a crime on playstation it's "remarkably stable"
@@dannonyogurt98 I don't think that's the case. I think it's more disappointment that it drops to 900p and still drops to the mid to low 50s. I believe that's why the frame drops is something he mentioned so much
They always go over the Xbox with a fine tooth comb and then breeze past the same things on the Playstation
Seems pretty good no matter the system mostly. Though going below 1080p with the more apparent frame dips on Series S is slightly disappointing. Hopefully if it can be slightly optimized with a patch it can be better.
Still better than many games that release even with a few patches. I'm curious if the Unreal Engine 4 has some issue in utilizing the SSD in consoles fully for Series X or PS5. Given other games seem to either have similar minimal load speed or pop in reductions not well utilized. Though if I recall FF7 Remake uses it and has better utilization of loading or pop in.
Mind different developers, use of systems, and etc... Be interested to see the recent breakdown of Doom Eternal upgrade given info already shared prior and how it shows both positive/negative for PS5/Series X.
This wasn't really something I was paying that much attention to but I certainly am now.
Great game and since I’m on a LG CX with VRR I ran 60FPS on Series X with no drops consistently. Ran smooth as butter for me my entire first play through as Yuito. Currently re-running as Kasane to get both sides to the whole story.

I have said it many times 4K 60fps and ray-tracing are too demanding for the next-gen consoles. Focus on 1080p god dammit, 500$ consoles can not compete with the PC.

Ratchet e Clank update. Has 120 hz (not FPS) mode ti improve input latency. Also 40 fps fidelity mode for 120 hz display. This Is huge guys, you should cover immediatly

I was really surprised at how well I run on my i3-6100 and 1070sc. I didn't even notice that it defaulted to max settings.
yeah, the game really isnt that heavy to run. ive seen 1080p gaming laptops that have gerforce 1050's run this game max as well.

Game is fantastic. The game has some weird story pacing but its still a fun romp. Combat is fantastic and just feels great.

Mind in cutscenes or in certain motions a drop or two won't be noticed by majority. We though can focus on that and then create issues not originally noticed. Did this a lot back on PC with frame count in the corner. Also we can easily adapt to otherwise minor irritations.
For example say Bloodborne and it's 30FPS limit without a fan patch. It also has frame pacing that further slogs it down in many instances. Platinum that game and have 500 hours in it... Go back to say some 360 games like the free game crackdown that came with a paid demo of Halo 3 "a joke by the way". Fun game I put a lot back in the day, but boy was that a frame chugging game if going crazy 🤣.
@@zuku254 Yeah I've used a VRR display since shortly after coming to PC, and I can definitely say you barely notice frame drops after getting one. Especially one with a large refresh range. Only place VRR doesn't help are stutters and massive hitches. So unfortunately having below the required VRAM you still will see noticeable stutters.
Series S running at 900p to 1296p majority of the times. I'm curious to see at what res and settings the PS4 Pro/XB1X runs & how it compares with Series S. Has any reliable analyst done comparison between these consoles?

The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X always target higher resolutions than the Series S but, have much worse frame-rate.

This was a nice summer surprise. I'm 7-8 hours in and waiting for the point where all the reviews say the story takes a weird turn. Personally, I'm enthralled with the story so far.
Great breakdown from DF as always. Would have been even better if the game had a 120fps option on the Series X (since I just got a 4K 120 TV) and it would have been perfect for this fast-paced game. Also hoping that AMD's FSR gets implemented via an update since it's available for both consoles now. That's something DF can revisit if it does happen. Keep up the amazing work guys.
FSR has still a lot of time to come to consoles.
Right now it is used just on a small number of games on PC.
DOes not need FSR. The game already uses dynamic resolution and reconstruction at same time. Probably better than FSR

Great on both consoles. Maby little fps drops on XSX fix in future with updates.
A lot of people with Series X's are getting Tvs with Vrr so it may not be necessary. But it'll be good nonetheless.
@@jayevans20 only problem is how long before there are more affordable TVs with VRR support? Most people are going to overlook VRR as long as they can get a 4k tv for $400-$600.
@@jayevans20 I have a 48” lg OLED n that shit cost $1,500. It is definitely worth it if you got it. Hopefully VRR support does become the norm soon.
@@juanmontanez6811 Lol I wanted the 48 inch LG CX so bad because my setup is quite small, but the fucking 55 inch one was actually cheaper and came with a Nintendo Switch and Animal Crossing all combined cheaper than the 48" so I went with the 55" and well as I was worried it barely fits in my room. I had to re-position my shelf and get a new table haha but I have no regrets now.
@@juanmontanez6811 Just got the 65 C1 and even with VRR it doesn't darken much at all compared to the CX thank goodness. Well not after latest firmware updates too. The game optimiser is brilliant too. The latest update has a proper gamer centric display where you can change the colour. They really are fast at updates. If it's not in your country as yet you can download it from Korea.
Why does the PS5 seem to always perform more steadily at 60fps in most games. Yet SeriesX generally has a slight resolution bump. I know I would take a steadier 60fps than a slight bump in resolution as most people won't notice the difference yet they will when it comes to performance.

No one is noticing either tbh. Unless you’re an eagle, you’re not noticing a slight drop in FPS or res…you just won’t. Also with vrr you won’t have FPS drop and you can say “well ppl don’t have those TVs”, plenty do and that’s the point of why it’s there. Also, Xbox always has or mostly seem to have higher textures etc, so couple with vrr, then it’s a solid game. But like I said, your human eye won’t notice this. Both gamers are going to get great games
The problem is both consoles drop frames but PS5 doesn't support VRR so the dips are noticeable on PS5
@@milk6765 Not really these analysis videos seem to show the PS5 maintaining the FPS target far more consistently then the Series X. Having to rely on a peace of their party technology to stop your games stuttering isn't something worth bragging about.

The drop in anisotropic filtering for the Series S seems like an oversight. It appears somewhat common to see this on consoles based on your previous reporting but all these consoles should have hardware more than capable to max this out without issue. No point in using the same size textures only to then leave them unfiltered and blurred.

What is DualSense integration like?
Since it's a cross platform game and fual sense is not on xbox or PC. Pretty sure there's no "dualsense" specific features. Expect basic vibrations but that's it :)

When devs optimize the game for PS5, they add sounds coming from the controller, resistance to triggers and haptics (which is not just rumble). That's the whole point and that's what all the devs are praising.
That's what I'd like to hear from DF, how well games are optimized for each console, and they never mention DualSense optimizations.

@@ABODANA0999 you obviously don’t understand VRR. Unless the frames start to drop below 15 frames in a jump the VRR makes it invisible by accounting for and removing it from what the eye can see. So basically with VRR it’s like there is no frame drop. You can’t be smoother than that without having VRR as well as Sony does not. This is facts not opinions like your comment. Learn about things before you type. It will keep you from looking foolish.
VRR is great, too bad most Xbox owners don't own a VRR capable TV. The market penetration on TVs with full HDM1 2.1 support is very small.

@@Hazmatt36000 Even just spending money on a Series X is a lot of money for a lot of people. It's going to be at least 5 years until HDMI 2.1 TVs are relatively common in households, by then the nextgen consoles (PS6, Xbox Series X2) will be right around the corner.
@@03chrisv you may be right. But if your not going to invest in the tv you should not invest in the next gen consoles then. Most of the benefits come from owning the right display.
Even with a game like this dropping into the 50s on the S it’s still a promising start for the hardware, I feel, with most games holding 60 in performance modes... I can’t say that for base consoles last gen, let alone budget ones like the Series S. Despite the 1440 spec for it, they were clearly designed for 1080p TVs and most games are holding that fine too. I just hope it can continue.
I loved the game, finished both campaign stories. Easy 8/10 for me.

Loving this game. It was a toss up for me between the Series X or PS5 version. In the end went with PS5 but I'm glad to see there wasn't really a wrong choice. Great performance on all consoles. The few framedrops are usually in cinematic moves anyway where you don't have control so it's not noticeable.
Also, I haven't timed it so I could be wrong but it seems my loading times are shorter than this, seeing it load in this video seems longer than when I'm playing. I think it's around 3 seconds. Although it could just be my mind playing tricks.

I went with Series X because they actually marketed the game and want more Japanese games on their console unlike Sony who has given Japan the finger for the last couple of years.
Long term, we all know Xbox will take back-compat more seriously than Sony.
