If anything the anime is an ad for the game as the anime is listed as "Based off the game" With the game being the "Source material". That and in japan the anime is almost always intended to be an ad for the original material.
The slide show thing is just how that type of game is they don't have AAA budgets like what most people are use to and combat can get boring if all you do is the same combo every time you fight. And the final two bosses are so good they make the entire game worth it
@@mystymos3614 from playing the game: The combat can either be bland and boring or in depth and good. Same way astral chains combat is. You learn combos: or you don’t. Astral chain is the most boring thing in existence if you refuse to learn combos and just spam the attack button
@@Raydr62 Yeah, there's just certain gameplay choices that I wish were there, like the heavy button being different attacks with each light string. The heavy attack is pretty much the same and from some reviews, the skill tree consists mostly of passives, not much of weapons to get, and not much customizables for the characters but astral chain was the same so i jest. 30fps on ps4 and that made it less gung-ho "I'm gonna pre-order right now" type, i just wanted a lil more. haven't gotten a good arpg since ghost of tsushima/dmc 5
That thing you say about the dialogue and that you fight for 15 mins than listen to cutscenes for 20 is exactly why I got my money refunded when I bought this game on Steam. I wanna play a videogame when I buy a videogame, not watch an anime or listen to a story.... I do not understand why Persona 5 seems so popular either, that game seems to be 70% dialogues and walking around and 30% actual gameplay and fighting as I have noticed from skipping over walkthrough videos here on youtube.
Interesting that you say that the characters are one-dimensional. I'm playing Kasane's route rather than Yuito's and all of the characters have been very good so far. I did think that Yuito seemed more basic and generic than Kasane did, which was what prompted me to play her route first, so I think that might be the problem on your end. A lot of Yuito's party ends up having bond episodes with Kasane anyway so I think they'll reveal a lot more character on my second time through just because I already know more interesting facets of their personality through Kasane's episodes. Yuito seems completely like a "generic good guy anime protagonist" so it wouldn't surprise me that much if his interactions with the other characters were also pretty basic. Kasane is much different and her character development, along with the development of her relationships with the other characters, has been a pretty stand out element of the story for me, at least compared to your typical action anime.
For the amount of VO of cut scenes, I think the price is well worth it. Story wise, I just finished the yuito side of things, there are some questions still left unanswered but at least not that convoluted in the end. They do still try to explain, some things. But overall I think the anime is the supplement for this. Thinking if I should play the Kasane side of things. Maybe on ex mode. But yes, difficulty wise I feel there's not much a difference from the different settings.
Real late to this, but Kasane side of the story explains the most pretty much and I'd honestly recommend it more than Yuito's story. There seems to be a couple of inconsistencies with the anime (and it's not that good anyway).
Few things I noticed since I started with Kasane Probably about I'd say half way through and a bit after that (when you're bond level is 4+) the game became too easy. Not too sure how Yuito worked but WIth Kasane you can build her in a way where you can crush enemies easy and basically always have your powers up. Especially towards the end where you can always invis, slow time, clones with one team then invincibility and fire for the other... Story wise it's kinda just okay... typical anime I suppose but they went way too far with the twists for the sake of twists. Places you explore are lackluster, glorified corridors... NPCs that add nothing. I dunno pretty let down by the game myself. I suppose it's a nice casual hack and slash. With only one boss that was noticeably harder if you didn't know he had a blind spot on his side on Kasane's run.
I've been playing it on Hard, and many battles are still easy but the boss battles are often really tough, and there are some areas you et access to later on that also have soem challenging battles. I'm level 20+ right now and some of the new areas have some really challenging battles leading up to the boss battle. Story stuff is okay, and it's hard to tell if the story will end up being a let down or if they'll pull it off. Skill tree is good with some interesting choices.
Glad it wasnt just me who found the game easy even on hard during the demo playthrough. I was hoping it was just the demo but based on this impression it seems its easy throughout. Rip
Appreciate the coverage, been on the fence on this game, 'll wait for a deep sale or more content. Will you cover tales of arise? Seems like to be similar to this in a way.
This game had touted of 40-50 hours of gameplay....but what you may not know is that its not 40-50 hours for each character. It's split. 20-25 hours with each character with repeated situations. Tales of arise isn't designed like that and if you look at the gameplay, it's more open world than this linear game(scarlet nexus).
@@pixytorres7117 you fail twice. 1. I have played Tales games(TOV is my fav). 2. Open world is defined as two ways. Not having a point a to point b basis.....OR when you are not given time restrictions within an open world layout(world map) allowing you to roam. Don't believe me? Just use google Go ahead and be quiet, won't you? Otherwise you will be wrong again for the third time....which im sure you have the potential.
Thanks for the info. I'm not in a hurry to play this so I'll wait for a sale Sucks that they animated Code Vein but decided to visual novel this. It probably would've helped with the pacing if it was short animated cutscenes in-between the fighting segments.
"The game is very easy, even on hard"...damn. That was like, my biggest concern since I'd seen a review saying normal was a complete cakewalk. Whats the point of a sick combat system if the enemies are pushovers? Supposedly theres no new difficulty or scaling for NG+ so it'll just be even easier. I also sort of suspected the RPG elements were pretty light and it's a bummer to see they are.
@The Truth I'm playin it on hard, it's pretty easy if you play safe. The only real threat is not realizing you are tanking a bunch of projectiles from offscreen that don't stagger you.
@@kejimaeda Um...on the highest difficulty? Yes, they are quite hard. Among the hardest AAA games out there even and I'm someone that seeks out hard games. I'm A bit over 3/4ths of the way through scarlet nexus on hard and yeah, it IS too easy and the ways they added difficulty mostly just punish you for playing aggressive. This game also isn't like DMC or bayo. Very few combos, no dodge canceling, and enemies will pelt you with projectiles from offscreen if you attempt to do long cool combos without a power that disables taking damage up.
@@kejimaeda Lol, you really need to play the hardest difficulty in those games before making an assumption like that. DMC3 was such a chore to finish on DMD.
Best part of the game for me by far I'm in the beginning of phase 5, haven't needed to grind once for materials or levels... I'm also playing on hard and it can be difficult at times, some bosses killed me a couple of times
Once again, thanks for giving an honest review Fex. Was thinking of buying/sinking some time in this one after another channel/comments seemed to give it nothing but praise but now realizing the downside maybe too much for me. Repetitive and no real lvl up/skill tree type stuff is just a big no for me. 👍🏼
I really don’t love how they skimped on the cutscenes. I would have loved fully animated cutscenes and it seems bizarre that a game from a major publisher couldn’t fund a fully animated story.
@@jmadd1234567890 it’s a $60 game made and funded by a big publisher. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the cutscenes to be animated. Looking forward to the anime though.
I guess they don't want it blow it with a lot of money. This is a brand new IP and they want to play it safe. It makes sense they would put more money into their longer running franchises.
It's also common in their games to do this. It's why game rarely release broken coming from them. Their budget is properly allocated. I do think you're being a bit entitled. A extremely well developed game with no bugs, deep progression systems and an actual anime being developed along side it. Your complaint is still images? It's done like that purposefully. There is no manga to the game. The game functions as a manga. You're proof that people can never be satisfied
@@jmadd1234567890 hey I think the gameplay is great. But a huge portion of this game (about half of reviews are to be believed) is cutscenes. And those are shot in still images. For the same price I can get other JRPGS with fully realized in game or animated cutscenes. Look I know it’s a nitpick, but in my opinion it cheapens the entire presentation and I find it odd that we are seeing that kind of budget cut from a big publisher like this. So you can call me entitled and defend this all you want. All I’m saying is in my opinion the game would have been better with fully realized story cutscenes; especially in a title that has invested so much in its story. Also I’m commenting on a review for a game and you’re criticizing me for being critical? It’s a review. If this isn’t the appropriate place where is?
Thanks for the review. The story seems interesting, but if it is presented like a slideshow for the most part then eh...can't say I'm excited about that. I love story, but how it's executed matters to me and if the majority of the game is going to be story that's presented in this manner then I think I'm gonna wait for a sale.
@@viisovari4544 At least Gravity Rush 2 depicted the scenes in a comic book style and had multiple panels. Scarlet Nexus on the other hand appears to use the scene merely as a backdrop with characters talking at the forefront, making it feel static.
Your description of the story stuff reminds me of Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris. Dunno if you checked that out, but my god the cutscenes. Wait, he said there are no sidequests, but I've seen the trophy list and doing a set number of them will give you an achievement. The devs have also mentioned that a single playthrough will take about 25 hours if you do everything (including things like sidequests), so I'm wondering if this reviewer just...skipped over them?
@@vaunfraser3586 I think he played it, he just tried rushing through it in order to get a review out. He even admits he wasn't done playing the game of the time of doing the review and further admits he hasn't played more than 15-20 hours. Given his remark about how each playthrough is 50/50 in terms of story differences based on who you pick again leads me to believe he was trying to speed through this game (this would only give him about 10 hours for each playthrough, which sounds like a speed run to me if each playthrough is supposed to be around 25-30 hours according to other reviewers and the devs for each character). This would explain why he thinks sidequests don't exist and why he sounds frustrated that the cutscenes equal out the gameplay. Rushing through a game can seriously hinder how someone views a game.
@@willowingwhispers2612 oh yea I didn't mean that he didn't play the game I just meant the side quest. I get what your saying, rushing a game to put out a review can lead to negative thoughts as you might not fully enjoy everything it has to offer. But that comment about no sidequest is misleading and could make or break the game for someone
@@willowingwhispers2612 I didn't speed run anything. Each story from what I understand is about 25 hours long. 13 or so of that is semi-animated cutscenes. This is the whole reason I couldn't finish in time. I watched ALL of them. It's far more likely other reviewers skipped them in order to finish. I have seen zero side quests in that time, though there are companion episodes that are just more cutscenes. I don't know if these count as "quests", or not, because you don't actually do anything but watch dialogue... Edit: I did finally find quests, they appear near the end of the game. They just take you through areas you've already been through several times unfortunately...
The reason why I can't do the sword art games is for all the long anime dialogue but the game play looks cool. What a shame that scarlet nexus appears to be similar in that regard
Watch out everyone. The base game will be good but those DLC's.... oh how they massacred my boy Code Vein. Bandai Namco better not pull a Bandai Scamco.
thanks for the information, yeah i feared that actual gameplay bits might not take portion of your playtime but i guess my fear was on the spot still i think if story is good prob worth grabbing on sale, seems like it should be fun and mindless hack n slash action game for 20-30 hours
Game is getting mostly 8/10s which is really solid, Could be better but it def isn't bad at least, Full buy? Depends on your preferences of games i think.
You talked me out of it really quickly. Scarce but good gameplay with a subpar storytelling ability that takes up most of your time has always been an instant write off for me. If you're gonna make a predominantly story driven game, put some effort into that aspect too.
Definitely disagree with your takes on the characters and the feel of how it's more of an advertisement for the anime than its own game and story. The game has a lot more gameplay than you gave it credit for and a lot more depth than you seemed to realize. I'd say definitely finish the game to get the full picture
Thank you for the review, i'll just wait for heavy discount to buy this game, doesn't look worth the initial price. I really hate the visual novel style, it's kinda lazy move to cut some development or production cost.
The Most Honest review +_+ I ALSO felt the SAME... this is ANiME or rather advertisment for the upcoming ANiME. 😶 The streets at the start looks dull grey mess... not impressive. Half the area is locked 🔒 You can't walk 2cm road without hitting a red boundary. 😒 I was expecting something LiKE NIER atleast with combat. Nexus has a delayed dodge mechanics... making it worthless. I rather jump out than dodge. Man Nier Automata was a beast when it came to cool dodges and deep philosophical plots. Not to forget the soul tearing tracks. I don't understand why THEY never make anything worthy LiKE it ever Again ???
Code Vein seems to have more depth in terms of being an RPG. But it's a Soulslike so the combat is about taking turns, dodging, parrying and defending while Scarlet Nexus goes for the character action vibe. More like Nier for example.
thanks for this, haven't been able to make my mind up due to Bandai kinda hiding the gameplay away from us...i was hoping for Code Vein 2 and i think that'll be the next big game from them. I think this is probably some side project to make some dollar...along with the anime...they made quite a bit of cash from Code Vein so maybe they're just trying to double-down this year and next??!? Either way...this is for a sale...thanks again!
Sooo a Mass Effect 2 feelings? Im glad for your review. I have a flaw, that I can see only the BIG pro and BIG con of a game I enjoy :D I enjoyed Code Vein, not for the combat (becouse I sux at that xD) but becouse of the story and the gameplay was sort of OK for me. So Im interested in Scarlet Nexus. Will keep in mind your points as I play it on weekend ;-) So the question is: Code Vein 2, when ? =^^= (and NO, no prequel BS!!! Like Code Vein 2 War for the Queen xD)
The story line sucks. Tales of Arise seems even worse with even more story line I wish I could just skip most of it and just kill shit! Practice the attacks and have fun. I sure wish demo's were more available on the Sony Playstation store, so I'd actually know what I am getting in to. Sony spends way too much time on puzzle based gameplay especially on most adventure games. I just just want to have fun, not spend half my time in commentary and story lines and dumb ass puzzles! I could have have saved a couple hundred if I knew what I was getting myself into, when i started.
Having tons of fun with it and it will definitely be a great game to invest time in until Tales of Arise arrives. Don't think it should be labeled a “wait for sale game“
I really loved the demo, but it sounds like I wont be getting the same experience in the full release. I wonder if the story ends up being worth it towards the end of the game?
Late comment, but I really appreciate the well thought out points. The pitfalls of cutscenes, and repetitiveness make it so I can skip the games with no worries. Thanks for saving me money!
@@Fextralife a fair point. I just like having that capability. Too often games don't have a jump for whatever reason and to me that always feels like something's missing.
The art is great, gameplay is great, characters are so-so. Dialog can get cheesy at times, but it's expected from JRPGs, and the story is not terrible (I'm on phase 9). The OST is awesome overall the game is 7/10 carried by the combat and great soundtrack. While this game may not be revolutionary the scenery, the music and combat system will def be remembered.
Okay, the 10-30 min cutscenes are only in the first hour of the game. Sure there may be some cutscenes here and there that are longer but it's cutscene are not MGSVTPP (Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain) level. And plus most of the dialogue is optional, if you don't want to watch a cutscene just skip through it.
so was watching easy allies review before. both of you seem to like it but it is interesting that you have different opinions :D. easy allies said that the game is somewhat challenging but the music is so just ok. you guys say the game is easy but music is good :D.
Side quests appear near the end of the game, which is why I didn't know about them. They are really mundane though, and take you through the same areas you've already been through.
What do you mean near the end of the game? I just started the game yesterday and i am only in Phase 2 and already finished one quest and picked up another. The whole point is you can mislead people with what you said. You legit said there are no side quests and that it's just cutscenes and then fighting and cutscenes and then fighting which is actually wrong. If you didn't mean it like that, well, that's on you man. You're giving a review, can't be making inaccurate statements. This almost stopped me from wanting to buy the game but i looked into it some more and watched more videos and then bought the game. I'm glad I did because I'm having a blast and what you said wasn't really true.
I'm so happy that the demo is not representative of the game! I can't wait to pick up my preorder. In the Demo (PS4 Pro) the camera was absolutely terrible, only getting a little better after turning off the "tracking mode" in camera settings. aerial combat was wonky as hell trying to hit opponents who kept moving in the air. The combat sound effects were extremely "mushy". and every time I got hit by an opponent it took me 10 seconds to get back up. I may or may not be exaggerating but the amount of time it takes to get back up after being hit definitely interrupted the experience each time. One of my biggest complaints which is most likely still in the game is that the "cutscenes" which were just comic book style drawings were lazy as hell. I really hope there's actual cutscenes in the game and not that lazy B.S.
I knew this game would have these kinds of problems. The title of the game mentioning a color felt like it was too literal or central to the world and that is supposed to be special when it is nothing but an artistic choice. The player character and their abilities always seemed to be the center of the game and if you are putting more effort into enemies than characters while still feeling forced to have a bunch of characters who need to be emotional for the sake of anime, then you should expect the plot to just be filler basically. This game never felt like it was designed for an all around good experience and its world always felt dead. I feel like this is one of those games that used a lifeless apocalypse setting just because it allowed them to do as little work possible in designing a world. These shortcuts have been taken so many times before, and it did feel like Code Vein had a lot of similarities when they were showing that off too. I almost thought they were the same game at first (fusing the two together would actually be really cool).
the demo really didn't do it for me. it just felt odd. the funny thing is if it showed the story better it could have sold me but it was all meh on the demo.
@@Sairento-kun yup same but im kinda confused because like 2 weeks ago when the game wasn’t out literally anywhere there were already reviews on ps store and it got bumped down to 4 stars but its now 4.5

The gameplay is fast, and intense, and very very fluid. You use the abilities of your teammates against enemies, dodging attacks and attacking in furious combos. You get longer combos and more abilities as the game goes on. The enemies are somewhat uninteresting by the end of the game, mostly because you fight the same ones over and over, but early on it's fantastic.
@@Fextralife I appreciate the reply, but this didn't answer my question. Is there a normal and heavy attack? Is there an active parry? What are the properties of the defensive mechanics, i.e. dodge/parry. And so on. Some players might only be interested in hearing how a reviewer *felt* about something, but others might be interested in the specifics and watching these videos to get information, not just unsubstantiated opinions.
@@k.constantine Hey I can answer a few questions based on demo. The basic combat (I.e w/o psychic stuff) can be described as a more casual nier automata. Most of the basics are there, although the dodge in this game is more of a step-dodge. Idk if it’s the s but I had trouble dodging ‘into’ attacks for the perfect dodge. Light attack 4+ combo and a heavy attack, both characters have unique attack properties. Heavy attack is usually used after a string of attacks and can be used in the air or for a ground strike. There are perfect dodges, but from what I’ve played in the demo it’s much less forgiving than nier or bayonetta, however a party members SAS mechanic makes perfect doges/counters more easier to achieve. Air dodges, 2+ SAS (using other characters abilities), tech recovery after being attacked and a few more things are from the brain map. There are also extended combos implemented with attack->physic-attack-psychic etc from the brain tree. Certain party members can ‘parry’ or take damage for you but it’s random; there are also assist attacks which appear with a button prompt and usually stagger enemies. I believe the frequency or added effects increase with your bond with the character, but besides that I’m not sure what prompts them. The combat doesn’t seem extremely deep or even complex but it is highly serviceable. There’s a few no hit runs on RUclips already.

If anything the anime is an ad for the game as the anime is listed as "Based off the game" With the game being the "Source material". That and in japan the anime is almost always intended to be an ad for the original material.
I actually do like a lot of story or cutscenes. I don’t mind them. Helps too that the combat is so amazing
The slide show thing is just how that type of game is they don't have AAA budgets like what most people are use to and combat can get boring if all you do is the same combo every time you fight. And the final two bosses are so good they make the entire game worth it
Great overview, thanks.
Thanks I really appreciate the honesty..gonna hold off. Great review.
Major Astral Chain vibes from this game, and I enjoyed that game majorly. Can't wait to pick this one up!
See, I was hoping this game would have depth to the combat like astral but i guess not
Very inspired by Astral Chain.
@@somedude1324 yeah but based off a couple of these reviews, combat is pretty abysmal
Dude loved this honest ass review! Thank you
That thing you say about the dialogue and that you fight for 15 mins than listen to cutscenes for 20 is exactly why I got my money refunded when I bought this game on Steam.
Definitely a "wait for sale" game. Going to play it regardless
I disagree....it's a good game in my opinion
Yeah, it’ll be an even longer wait once I clear my backlog, so 2025 is when I’ll probably touch this 😂
I bought this game for $10 on PC and I can't complain
Few things I noticed since I started with Kasane
Probably about I'd say half way through and a bit after that (when you're bond level is 4+) the game became too easy.
I was hoping for more live animation cutscenes than mostly Manga themed ones
The game doesn't have the budget to do that
@@flashingflamingo4536 You mean Bandai Namco is tht stingy

I've been playing it on Hard, and many battles are still easy but the boss battles are often really tough, and there are some areas you et access to later on that also have soem challenging battles. I'm level 20+ right now and some of the new areas have some really challenging battles leading up to the boss battle. Story stuff is okay, and it's hard to tell if the story will end up being a let down or if they'll pull it off. Skill tree is good with some interesting choices.
how was it?
Glad it wasnt just me who found the game easy even on hard during the demo playthrough. I was hoping it was just the demo but based on this impression it seems its easy throughout. Rip

Sucks that they animated Code Vein but decided to visual novel this.
@The Truth nah this game easy af. the real extreme difficulty boss is the fkin camera, specially when playing yuito. bamco fked up hard
@The Truth I'm playin it on hard, it's pretty easy if you play safe. The only real threat is not realizing you are tanking a bunch of projectiles from offscreen that don't stagger you.
Like DMC/Bayonetta style games have ever been hard in the first place.
Best part of the game for me by far
I'm in the beginning of phase 5, haven't needed to grind once for materials or levels...
I'll wait for a sale too, I still have a large backlog so no rush. Great review though. Very valid points I would never think about mentioning
I really don’t love how they skimped on the cutscenes. I would have loved fully animated cutscenes and it seems bizarre that a game from a major publisher couldn’t fund a fully animated story.
They made an actual anime for this game if thats what you need. Animation is really expensive
It’s a slide show like Gravity Rush 2
@@viisovari4544 At least Gravity Rush 2 depicted the scenes in a comic book style and had multiple panels. Scarlet Nexus on the other hand appears to use the scene merely as a backdrop with characters talking at the forefront, making it feel static.
Theres an anime of this

Wait, he said there are no sidequests, but I've seen the trophy list and doing a set number of them will give you an achievement. The devs have also mentioned that a single playthrough will take about 25 hours if you do everything (including things like sidequests), so I'm wondering if this reviewer just...skipped over them?
I don't think he even played any because I watched reviews where people also talked about playing side quest even if they were simple

I'd say Code Vein. Really good character customization and combat is nice and offers decent variety.
Code Vein simply has more gameplay...a lot more. It depends on whether you want to play more or watch more...
Code vein is.. a soulslike game not really a jrpg. Theres going to be much more combat in code vein due to that being the main selling point

There's a recovery from getting hit. It's the dodge button and you bounce back up. That ability was probably not available in the demo with the chick.
Did I miss it or did you say we could skip scenes?
the demo really didn't do it for me. it just felt odd. the funny thing is if it showed the story better it could have sold me but it was all meh on the demo.

… the combat and the story starts to kick off about phase 2 and a bit in and also the brain map has 57 whole skills so a reason to keep playing and as well as brain field ability is intriguing so ima have to say a 9.5 or a 10 really good game so far in 2021
Art and combat looks really cool. Would really love to try this one out.
The cons completely overshadow the pros for me in this one. Thanks for the thoughts on this one!
I came here to learn how it plays, but nothing was said about the combat except "it's okay." Please explain mechanics in more detail in the future...
@@Tailsfan803 Wonderful. Thank you so much, this is very helpful when deciding whether or not I should keep an eye on this game!
Bummer, I was hyped for it in 2020, then it never went on sale, and I kinda forgot about it until it went on sale now.
