Has Twitch proved itself as a platform where we should keep anything here? Should we keep videos, VODs, and clips on Twitch now? At the current state of things, in this video I evaluate if it's worth putting videos, VODs, and clips on the platform as a Twitch streamer. This is also a commentary on where the current state of Twitch is at.
I often get asked if I think Twitch is a great platform to stream on or be a part of. With the direction the company is going I can't see it competing with other platforms like Facebook and RUclips in the future, so I discuss my 2021 brand plans without any changes going forward.
I hope Twitch can turn around. With all of the DMCA problems, multiple ads problems, and the lack of communication from the website on actionable things to fix the platform, I'm not sure where it goes from here. It's difficult because I have so much faith in the platform after 8 years of being a Twitch streamer and eventually building a top streaming brand, but I am definitely losing faith.

agree. twitch is basically the gaming equivalent of linktree, if the streamer isnt live.
wtf is linktree
@@Ven_detta_ many people use it on instagram or twitter in their bio. its just a webside where you put the links to all your socials. youtube, twitter, insta, twitch and so on.

dont forget the massive influx of norman viewers because of these minecraft players that for some reason dont stream on youtube, this dude tommyinnit has 220k viewers right now, and for whatever fucking reason twitter is absolutely OBSESSED with these minecraft youtubers, mf is top of twitch AND trending on main stream twitter, its so stupid.
Mixer shutting down was actually so bad for twitch.
Twitch now gets to sit comfortably at the top and imagine themselves to be some perfect king while everyone under them suffers due to their hubris
Being safe at the top will make twitch lazy and we already have seen them become lazy.
It’s so sad how our small gamer site which use to be an awesome place for us to chill, has turned into a disgusting corporate failure that doesn’t know it failed yet.
welcome to America, baby. get used to it.

When RUclips recommends this for you
Are you winning son?
Imagine getting a fake check mark to look like your real
Oh RUclips is loving this shit, the second they notice more streams joining their site, they’ll hopefully sink more money into their live streaming side.
I would put money on RUclips taking over. Because either outcome I win, either everyone moves over to RUclips and I make money, or twitch fixes it’s shit and we get to use the site freely again
They've had lots of input from partners and experts and have basically refused to listen/change. Now they are suffering the consequences for it.
Maybe it's just me but the preroll ads really turns me off, as soon as I click on a stream and the first thing I have to do is watch ads I just close Twitch and do something else.
Think about what youre saying though, instead of watching a pre ad, you would rather watch the AD in the middle of the content
@@mdamon06 except you end up watching ads in the middle of the content anyways

Yea twitch has not been great for a while.
Twitch was never a long term content platform. RUclips I can make a video and 5 years from now it could still be relevant and still have info that’s good even that far down the road. That’s why youtube will over take the live streaming space. You start like RUclips did with a long term content and then move into a live space and what ever you make in that live space can be clipped right there. Now you have curated content on the same channel for that different audience from the people that don’t like live content/can’t watch it during the day.
you think youtube is good when it comes to copyright though? they suck as well, they might not be as extremely bad as twitch but that's like saying compared to Bin Laden the guys that executed 9/11 werent so bad. it's all relative but at the end of the day both are fucking shit, youtube copyright strikes a shit ton of people for ridiculous reasons and the whole way youtube operates is completely ridiculous
@@adarnudellman7666 but you have to remember. I can just not use DMCA stuff and if it is fair use I can fight it here. On twitch I can even see/know the content that was flagged. I can delete all of my content and still get perm banned. 9/10 times I feel like RUclips copyright system is fine. I got hit with it once and was like ok no problem I kind of expected it. The way YT handles it is 1,000,000 times better then twitch. On YT it’s take it down and then you lose the strike in 90 days. On twitch it’s take it down and still get banned potentially. Soooo. You are comparing apples to oranges here.
@@ButtorsGaming We're comparing the sewer to the giant shit pile
@@adarnudellman7666 RUclips has been down this road and did the right things it isn't perfect but that's not RUclips's fault, you're talking like RUclips writes copyright laws or sends the strikes, no they don't do either the government writes the copyright laws and the copyright owner sends the notice to RUclips that an infringement has been made and RUclips tells you to remove it they tell you to remove it because the alternative is the copyright holder sueing you directly and im sure you don't want to be sued by Sony or universal or some other multi million/billion $ company, the issues around stupid copyright claims come from the shit Copyright laws that RUclips is forced to work under if you have issues with the way RUclips does it's copyright talk to the government as they are they only ones who can change it
Back when Twitch had a channel feed, I would post popular clips/Twitch highlights/news updates from my channel and viewers would actually watch them + get updates.
Then they removed it (even though it was optional) without any way of replacing it. As someone whose fans didn't use Twitter and weren't very engaged with discord, Twitch just removed a facet of my brand.
I don't forsee twitch ever being more than a home for live stream. Even though clips are quite popular, their main discoverability is via reddit.
I totally agree with you here Devin, I quadrupled my viewers in so much less time on RUclips in one video, were I've never broke 5 viewers on Twitch.
I was thinking of returning to livestream on RUclips since the discovery system is better and you get a vod. Is good you are getting growth here.

Great take Devin. I appreciate how thought out your analysis is and personally at this point, I've migrated all of my LIVE content and short form content to RUclips. Devin Nash you’re awesome keep up the great work.
I've kinda understood that twitch was always meant to just be a place to go live, not a place to live. Someone would have to be pretty insane to try and be discovered through their twitch vods. Maaaaybe clips because there's a sort of discoverable aspect of that but not expecting twitch to ever improve the simple ranking by views system they have for those. I'm focusing on twitter/insta/tiktok/youtube for discoverability, which is already starting to look hopeful for me, at least in tiktok. The only ounce of discoverability I have on twitch is the fact that streaming while playing on lichess shows that you're broadcasting every time you play someone chess
Twitch: You can bow only view in only 480p
Me: Joke's on you my internet is so shit i only watch in 480
sad that mine was soo bad that 360 was my thing and recently 480 was really good i can finaly read stuff.
I don't know what they did to the website but like 3-4 years ago I was able to comfortably watch 1080p60fps with 10Mbps download if no one else in my home was doing anything intensive. Fast forward to now, with 50Mbps download (although my ISP is so shit it's often stuck at 20Mbps) if the stars align I can watch at 720p60fps with a significant delay, otherwise I stutter even at 480p. I'm not a programmer or web developer so I've no idea what's going on. I haven't tried any of the 3rd party twitch viewers tho.
I've been feeling the same. RUclips's been showing more value, over time.
Thanks for more quality and informative content Devin, the RUclips Redemption Arc is going well! I hope that Twitch gets some Deus Ex Machina for the sake of the brand you worked on creating before, so that maybe you can reap the "benefits" (though your content is more valuable to consumers IMO) of both platforms at once to a higher degree than before.
Content Creators are the ones to improve the Platform, if everybody leaves, then the Platform never improves. If other platforms are better, it's because of the help of their Content Creators.
What I don't understand is how is RUclips dealing with this same issue? Not the videos - that's easy - but the live streaming part, cause it's the same issue: you can't regulate live content the same way you can pre-recorded videos. So either the live portion of RUclips isn't popular enough to have caught the attention of the RIAA, or I'm missing something.
I like your talks but am stunned at how thin you make the epic Shure SM7B sound.
That being said, good content, I will be back!
youtube is number one place to review old twitch clips, i was recently looking for old clip compilations.. LSF broken. content created on twitch ends up on youtube only. not bad. :D
Well that kinda sucks
Twitch does not make Amazon its money... Why would they invest more into the platform, especially when live stream gaming is a mine field. They know way more about this landscape than anyone else. These companies plan 5 years in the future... they know what is coming and I believe there is a good reason why they are going this route.
Twitch is getting bigger names like the NFL. If Twitch can prove they can become more than just game streams, they will have a chance.
This is part of what I think it's so crazy that MS gave up on Mixer. I think had they played the long game, and offered a direct alternative platform in the midst of all this Twitch controversy, they easily could have become the alternative. Microsoft expected that site to become an overnight sensation which is crazy, but had they played the long game, I think they could have been doing really well right now.
Mixer had a way to many rules. Twitch rules are super relaxed. The funny thing is that's bad for both platforms.
I have a feeling this might have been the big reason they closed. They got out of the mess before it began.

For real though I really enjoy your videos. You're so good at explaining things that I would never think about/understand other wise
As far as the whole "Do I really want viewers telling me to die in a fire" thing, I think it can be a good or bad thing depending on how you deal with it. If people join your channel thinking to hate on you but discover you're a good and entertaining person, they can potentially become good viewers. I had this experience in part, gaining a few very loyal viewers(I usually only have 1 or maybe 2) out of the hundreds of people who would come in and just spam me with hate because of some video some dude made of me from clips that made me look really bad.
The ones that show the most hate normally don't know how to communicate most of the time. It's just their thing. I think something like that may still be new to him.

DEVIN YOU'RE ON TRACK TO 100K BY END OF YEAR :D
I see Twitch thriving off of its small community based creators.
I've been mainly an observer on the platform and have been in and out of countless communities, big and small.
The ones that are welcoming I've stayed with longer. The ones that seem like a "clique of friends" I bounce.
I've seen countless small creators treating and basing their community around paid friendships.
If you're not donating bits, subs, or time, you're regarded as just a viewer and not a part of a lasting community. The mods and donors are "the real ones" and will push you out of the communities consciously or subconsciously, I've seen both.
TLDR;
Basically Twitch is thriving off small paid friendships. 🤫
That being said, I was able to find 5 people I really clicked with, that I see as being friends of mine for life. So some good has come with my tactics.
Twitch doesn't care, if they cared they would address all the elephants in the room by revamping how their platform allegedly brings people together.
I see a lot of people stuck at - 40 viewers because they push a lot of people away even though they claim (safe space, everyone is welcome, or advocating for people with mental illnesses) yet when mental illness creeps up, "deal with your shit, then come back" is the response I saw with one community in particular.
Another issue I saw, was Mods treating the creators channel as their own which inevitably killed the channel all together. Mods and creators of small communities rarely nderstand the fact that they need to communicate as "staff" for direction the creator envisions.
TLDR; Twitch as a whole, corporate, creators, mods, viewers are on this roller coaster ride with no direction, reason, or thought about making content creation and viable career in the future.
Cool view on the existing platform. I would like to add 2 points:
On twitch database: The fact they copy any content is, I suspect, a legal obligation in order to have evidences in case of legal investigation. Pretty much the case for any company with digital content subject to be sensible for legal reasons.
On Twitter vs Twitch: Eventhough Twitch is inferior in terms of discoverability, the monetization is much higher. You can get huge on Instagram/TikTok/Twitter but you will be more keen to get a reasonable wage from content on Twitch and RUclips.
On Twitch, yes they have to keep copies of everything. The issue is all of that is on a public server that you, me, or anyone can get into. Did you show your passwords on last week's stream that you deleted? Guess what! :D
Twitch monetization is very very low because they keep way more than they should. The lowest CPM on RUclips is better than Twitch. There are some good breakdowns on RUclips about this.
Two problems.
- RUclips has done a poor job in Livestream discovery after they shut down RUclips gaming. The only way people will discover you is through Vods. Only people who are subscribe to you know you're live. Heck sometimes your new Vods don't notify your subs here.
- Twitch community will just move to a different stream they follow if you're not online. Mixer thought buying Shroud and Ninja will lure all of their Twitch followers to the platform and see what happen.
You can buy the streamer but not the community
RUclips streaming is a lot better now because there's a tab where you can look for streams. Also in every video under all the recommended videos you can find livestreams.
RUclips gaming is still there, it has its own category.
I follow you because of your big music list, that's how I found you.
Thank you for the insights and advice!
At this point, we need to gather a bunch of people together and make a PAC. We HAVE TO if were going to have any sort of reasonable reach to content creation. There needs to be a limit to how copyright works and how far these companies can reach us. We should be allowed to have more leeway with music and be given a better shot to resolve these copyright desputes instead of these companies threatening to sue and then we cant do anything. Theyre making fair use obselete, and considering majority of people using copyrighted content understand fair use and how to properly fall under it and their content is STILL being taken down, is a fucking problem. Motion picture association of america and sony music have both put in like 6k each to have their PAC with their laws being written, its not that much. We can get a ton of content creators together, spend a couple hundred bucks each and have THOUSANDS of dollars for a PAC. We need to take control of these situations and fight. Don't make excuses. Don't sit there and say "It wont work." It wont work because you wont put effort to have people do this and help each other. Lets make a PAC and take down these copyright laws so that EVERYONE can be happy. #DMCAPAC

You are one of the few ones that find him on Twitch. Did you find him by watching other streamers?
@@Layanor Yes. I don't remember exactly who or when, but I think he was interviewing someone I follow..
If Twitch is only saying out loud that they are interested in the 5 minute items, then they have no long term plans, obviously. From what they tell us, they really just want to be the "flavor of the moment", but actually have no idea on how to make that as relevant in the market as Twitter does. Devin's math & analysis proves it. The recent DMCA debacle has also shown up the fact that Twitch made no long term plans to handle the situation, and didn't even "war game" it, not having any sort of contingency plan in place at all. Add to that with every other major problem that has surfaced in the past, Twitch's normal response was a make-something-up-quick & throw-it-against-the-wall & see if it sticks or works. Half the time they just make situations worse, & the other half it's just ineffective. And don't even get me started about uneven rules enforcement.
There is a definite pattern here. Management staff just seen to be cruising through & doing the minimums without any real concern for the future, and executive staff never hold anyone's feet to the fire, unless majorly pushed to by the users or outside media. IMO, this is pure laziness. Does Amazon corporate never really take a hard look at what's going on there? I find that amazing on a purely business level. But when you get to the size that Amazon is and the amounts of money that it makes, I guess it shouldn't be all that surprising, especially if Twitch is always reporting a profit.
Devin said: "We're willing, whether through ignorance or malevolence, we are willing to make the user experience of this website substantially worse, in exchange to get what we want". This is the whole thing in a nutshell. If that's the attitude of decision makers at Twitch (and I tend to think that it is), it's no wonder they don't think rationally or long term about the platform. The self interest rules everything. "Well if it crashed & burns I'm outta here to greener fields anyway, whatevs."
I've been posting YT videos and want to get into streaming the games I play and have been going back and forth between if I should stream on Twitch or YT and I keep seeing so many bad things about twitch and then bad things about YT I have no idea where to go

Comparing Twitch and Twitter seems disingenuous. You can be an astronaut, WWE wrestler, Disney star, Twitch Streamer, or ex CLG CEO without Twitter and make a living. Now try Tweeting without those prerequisites. Nobody would care who you are. Twitter is a place to pick up a 2nd check for the work you've already done. It's not comparable time investments.
The rest of the points about Twitch's failings I completely agree with, though.
There is a GOOOOOOOOD streamer that YOU KNOW, that is doing amazingly well on twitch THAT REPEATS a lot something like " if you wanna grow on twitch invest in your social media like facebook, instagram, twitter, youtube .... blabblablabla"

5:40 what was that? 5-minute plays?
i feel like certain types of live content cant work for specific viewers like myself.
eg: i watch most vids at minimum 2x speed, and frequently skip forward or end the vid early if its not highly compelling the whole time.
some vids ill zoom up to 4x speed just to get through slow parts (but not skip forward) to make sure i dont miss any critical phrases or images.
i dont think most ppl are this way however.
Everyone is different for sure. As a content creator you just have to make stuff and see who sticks around to watch :)
Have you seen RUclipss recent play? They added an "applaud" or tip feature for individual videos, so now viewers can give content creators one time deposits through RUclips. I actually don't know how recent this is but I myself came across it about a week ago. On the surface it looks like a really good move, not sure if a video has to be monetizable or not in order to get "applause" but if it doesn't I feel like that can really help creators. It also provides an alternative to viewers who just want to make one time payments to support creators rather than subscribe to a patreon.

I've been in pre production for over 6 months because I wanted to launch what I've been putting together on my own terms. I'm fully aware that hardly anyone will watch my content. It's going to have multiple components. Mostly because of the advice of Devin, Harris Heller, and Eposvox. But as I've put this together, and watched how twitch has behaved even just since covid started. I just can't see how I could feel comfortable in trusting my content to live on a platform from a company that honestly doesn't even behave as if there are grown ups working at twitch. Facebook might be evil, but my god do they treat their streamers better. It's not even close. Every message is clear, there are people there to help you when you do have actual issues and of the incidents I've read they've had with streamers. It seems like the people that they make available actually take their jobs seriously and do whatever seems like the fairest thing to do in the situation.
I've never seen a single reason since I started watching twitch channels in the last 5-6 years as to why working with twitch is so great, aside from "they have a lot of viewers". They literally can't give you a second reason. they have viewers. That's all twitch has. Cause they dont have customer service, or good creator relations, or evenly implemented rules, or professional staff. Viewers is literally their only plus.
If hardly anyone is going to watch my content no matter what I do. I may as well put it on the place that seems like a more rational, less insane decision. Sadly, twitch is so bad now, they make Facebook look good. Just think about that. They actually do make Facebook look good.
i just binge watch ur content LOL
Would you recommend streaming games on youtube, rather than twitch?
RUclips sucks, Twitch sucks, alternatives suck. So where are we supposed to go?
There is nowhere to go. Twitch is still the biggest streaming platform, regardless of what people say. RUclips streaming is getting there, but when you want to stream, you have to go to twitch for the best exposure. People say 'fuck twitch, go to youtube streaming' probably already have a giant following where they'll at least get some viewers immediately.
RUclips.
If twitch lets itself rot like this, then RUclips is everyone’s best bet.
Devin I watch so much of you on RUclips but not twitch(sorry). Because I use RUclips so much I find that if I do watch a stream its on here and I may go to Twitch once a month for an hour. I would be more likely to watch you if you came here :)
I wouldnt be surprised if twitch was saving broadcasts without us knowing. Even for those who opt out of archiving.
If we make the jump from streaming on Twitch to RUclips, which may not be a bad idea, I'm considering it. But, is that really a good idea? Cause I've always assumed amd also been that being on twitch and yt was diversifying our potential for revenue, so we aren't just limited to 1 platform for content.
I just dont want to make the switch, build up a streaming and content page and then if something happens, lose everything I've built.
Just out of curiosity you always say people are sleeping on yt live, why not just stream here?
Where is mixer when you need it LUL
If twitch keeps going like this, people will transition over to youtube
I think alot of people underestimate the importance of "twitch chat" Twitch's chat features and "spam" are second to non in terms of a sense of a weird community.
Its why i believe its why it remains the number 1.
For me Twitch Chat is like the fake laughs in old series, i don't read chat, i don't interact with chat, but sometimes they go super sonic fast and i know that something happened... if is a bunch of Emotes i will understand what was the communal sentiment and i 'read it' in someway
no it's definitely the main factor, I just couldn't imagine most streamers streams being the same on youtube. no TriHard no LULW no Sadge no dancing emotes etc. it would just feel sad tbh
Like number 420 reporting for duty. :)
If I started a on twitch a week ago and have decent momentum rn would anyone recommend continuing normally or move onto another platform like RUclips? I would say f*ck it and move to RUclips immediately but my viewership is increasing with every stream and Idk if switching at this time would do a disservice to myself. Any advice?
Try both?
@@helpmombeatsme9260 I want to but Idk if doing that would cause me to lose the viewership I have on twitch now.
Try both is what I would say, maybe let your twitch viewers know you'll stream some days on youtube to give you a slight viewer boost.
If you aren't partnered or affiliated with twitch yet, use restream.io to stream to both simultaneously and encourage people to watch on youtube over twitch.
@@CarlosFlores-pl3lb So have a schedule setup in a way to where some nights I stream through twitch and other nights through youtube?
I feel like devin nash is actually my brain if my brain was a twitch streamer... literally reading my mind
Unfortunately, Twitch markets itself as a platform not a publisher. Publishers have the ability to edit their content for the public consumption and ban if they so choose. Platforms are third party providers for service, but they have no power or authority even though some do want them to have a vested interest in their future. I see a platform almost the same as a gig in the ever growing gig economy which ebbs and flows with trends in market demands. We have no steady current, and it would be hard for the little guy to keep his head above water.
Catchy title, I wonder how long it took Devin to come up with it this time!
I submitted an Offboarding ticket to opt out of the affiliate program. Thought it over and you're right, it's absolute joke. Being able to pay into it when the requirements were already stupid easy is just unnecessary.
I'll let you know if I run into any friction (which I doubt, I'm only a 5-7 views andy).
Twitch is like a going to a ratchet ass night club with drunk people and shitty security guards.. You hate the place but you only go because either your friends are there or it's the only thing in town .. what ever cya on MySpace
IMO, Amazon bought Twitch to sell more games. I really can't see how that has happened. So now, I wonder what Amazon is thinking about it. Tying it to Luna may help, but I would love to know if they feel it has been a success or not. Even the live events they picked up have gone back to RUclips.
I promise you Amazon could care less about selling games... They care about selling subscriptions.
Okay, but I hope people do realize that music licensing is a thing, and if you get a broadcasting license you can keep using music as long as it falls under that particular license. Is music licensing kind of bullshit? Absolutely. However, until the laws are changed, we just have to do as they say. Although I'd say the licensing should simply be cheaper.
I completely agree with you , sadly Twitch has A LOT of work to do to make up for the F ups. That is why I'm trying to grow my RUclips as my priority and Twitch 2nd as an affiliate. That is not to say that Twitch is king of live streaming and live interaction with the creator and not to mention the Twitch community is un matched! I think I'm going to maybe go back to streaming 3-4 hours maybe 3 times per week or even 2 days per week. The hard part is that twitch on its own as a new streamer , the discoverability is almost non existent! Also isn't DJ Wheat, head of creator development? Would he be the one to go to and have a dialog with?
I recommend restream on many platforms. You should see where your content is more discoverable. If it's Twitch then it's Twitch. If it's Twitter... then that's weird but hey now you know! :D
Monsoon tmis getting people together to fight this DMCA stuff
Well, lets consider Jeff Bezos.
Twitch is a small, marketing branch of his empire, that costs him money, so that he can bring people to Amazon Prime.
Ok. There is a Limit to that. To how many users will join Amazon Prime and use Amazon.
So, once you reach it, twitch no longer serves its purpouse and can be closed. My guess is, The execs at Twitch are basically.... temp workers as far as Amazon is considered. I dont see Jeff asking twich how he can help them, I see Jeff screaming at Twitch telling them they make no money AND on top of that are exposing him to all kinds of legal liabilities.
I mean, 95% of the ads I get on twitch are from Amazon owned tv shows, and the ocasional game for a few weeks.
The thing that annoys me with Twitch... people keep complaining about it, they did some crazy stuff already, keep doing it, their community guidelines are enforced based on who you are... people have enough grievances to force them to listen. But people complain in a tweet and the next tweet is basically "join us live on Twitch"... That's useless. We should just show Twitch that our complaints are serious and that they need to take their streamers seriously. We are their product, we are what they can sell... and they don't care about us. So stop streaming on the platform for at least 24hours. Show them.
I know that everybody is afraid of "but if I stop for a day I will never recover" or "but someone will cheat and stream so he is going to get all the audience that day" or whatever. But we really need to do something that impacts Twitch. They do that sort of stuff on a daily basis. They kick some creators without a second thought, they make huge changes that alienate part of our communities or even our livelyhood... so fight back. Stop complaining and start putting your money/actions where your mouth is.
If Twitch enforced its rules, things would be way different.
@@Layanor then they rules don't make sense and should be adapted to the real world. In any case, they do whatever they want and streamers pay the price.
@@AssassinSquid Agreed
Well, there's always another website.
it would be the best time for youtube to bring their A game and revamp youtube gaming they can yoink streamers that will eventually be dmca banned and will need a place to stream
RUclips did this at the end of last year. There are big Twitch streamers that came to RUclips and are bigger than they ever would be on Twitch. We already see a major shift. Also if you want that gamer feel, turn on RUclipss dark mode :)
@@Layanor by revamp youtube gaming i mean the UI is trash the chat has emojis and is too small even mixer did a better job with that
@@GabeIG considering all the enhancements I would say that yes, emojis could use some help :)
It would be nice if RUclips theater mode works like twitch
How much money did you make on Twitch during those 98 hours? Via bites, subs, "donations", etc? I'm only pointing this out cause I feel it's also import when doing Twitch V.S. Twitter. And how much money did you get from Twitter?
Yes, money isn't everything but it should be mention. I think.
Also, how many people have seen a Twitch clip, Twitch compilation etc on Reddit either from a Fail, information clip, funny or silly clip and watched them on twitch. Yes, it's not super big or even super important but something worth metions.
