For a few months I've been thinking about cancel culture - the concept of deplatforming or canceling an influencer because of a perceived or actual offense they do in private or public. Recently, CallMeCarson - a prominent Minecraft RUclipsr - has come under fire and is the latest to experience a mass call for cancellation. I'm not here to pass judgment on CallMeCarson, Keemstar, or anyone involved in the drama / cancellation. I think the marketing implications of cancelling influencers is real interesting.
I wanted to explore some of the psychology behind mass cancelling people and some of the unexpected effects it has on Twitch, Twitter, and RUclips. One of the most interesting concepts around cancelling someone is how certain influencers use outrage marketing and manipulation to get haters to do exactly what they want.

I'm a corp attorney who's represented individuals discussed in this video. What you need to understand is that when creators become successful, they need to treat their platform like any other business. That means immediately hiring a good legal/ PR team (or person), using crisis mgmt consultants when necessary, employing accountants, social media manager, etc. You can't just handwave away the bad acts of a young creator based on age when the creator is a millionaire.

The problem is 90% of the people who cancel the C.E.O's don't realize that canceling people damages other things. Like if you're a startup, and you're canceled, you can't really get a job on the side IN THAT industry. Other damages including changing people's perception of the brand in question, situation, drama, or whatever. You can go onto a platform, and say @CarlosX360 sucks, it doesn't matter if its true or not, that "idea" is a stench on the brand. So, I mean, the bigger company can handle it, because they can absorb the losses, and move on.

Only going off of emotions rather than information of the system. Not going through the courts to get a more official verdict.

Hit the nail right on the head as usual, Devin. Cancel culture only works on the people who are genuinely empathetic and could go on to do bigger and better things if given the opportunity to reform. Communities put so much expectations on young men and women to have pristine backgrounds with moral compasses of a saint when they wouldn't be able to fulfill those tall orders themselves. I wish more people out there were sympathetic towards content creators instead of expecting them to bare the weight world and their expectations on their shoulders.

You make a valid point in pointing out how its used in all forms of media and how its used to control people into doing others work. its a huge moral grey area in how its used as well good and bad. This is really something that needs to be brought into the light for people because it can be just as dangerous and harmless depending on who uses it.

Seeing female Twitch streamers talk about the kind of harassment and shit they've had to face just to do what they love is staggering, thanks for including that in your talk and being an empathetic person in that regard. Like when Hafu talked to HealthyGamer about that professional esports team called "we're going to rape Hafu at worlds" and just how scary that environment was, it was really eye opening ): Especially when many popular male streamers say that being a woman on Twitch is easy mode without looking into all of the harassment, it's a super valuable thing to have someone like you who understands some of this stuff!

I feel like the term "cancel culture" is just a modern term for mob justice. Sometimes it gets the right person. Sometimes the mob piles on someone who is innocent. Very interesting info. Just goes to show how important controlling the message is after a PR disaster.
The other thing is with the internet age, generally there are influencers pushing canceling someone/something. I feel like even if someone does a good job messaging, if someone with 50k concurrent viewers makes it their mission in life to target you (for reason or not), then you're going to have a hard time. Even worse if you have multiple big streamers targeting you.

Also these platforms allow users to ignore these things. RUclips allows user to "Not Interested" or Don't recommend Channel" to the user personally. Twitter also allow users to block. So if you want to ignore those things, there are functions.

I think that there is a difference in how cancel culture affects people. If you don't make a living of online content (lets say you have a semi relevant twitter account) than it can destroy your life as your employer might decide to fire you for whatever reason. But if you are in the business of making online content it can massively boost your profile because now people are talking about you.

100% If you're not a content creators, or have a majority of the power in your $$$ system (just middle tier employee or something) you're screwed. Not enough people backing you up, employer sacrificing you, bad record for everything and nobody to help clean up. That would be horrible

Omfgosh you're a genius! Your knowledge and understanding of both the market *and* human psychology as well as the relationship between the two is IMMENSE! Thank you for this info. I hope this reaches a large audience, because so many need to be aware of this and know how to deal with these situations with morally good intentions/goals in order to actually achieve them. You deserve a lot of respect and appreciation, man. Subbed!
    P.S.: thanks, Anita.

Wow, I'm so happy I've never let hate get me to care about any content or creator enough to b an amplifier (I prefer to use the term 'sheep')
If I really don't like something/someone, I just make sure I never see it again so that I don't have to deal with it ('Not interested' button)
I've never heard of Keemstar till a video of him called "The truth about.." came out n showed how he just kept pressuring Etika just b4 he took his life
After that video that wasn't even from his channel, I started seeing a bunch of his on my recommended page, and that 'Not interested' button came in handy
Speaking of, you think it could be used to negatively affect someone?
Like subscribing to someone just so that when they pop up on your feed, you use the button that let's youtube know your not interested in watching their video

FYI the quote you mentioned about "be in the world, but not of it" is often attributed to Jesus's teachings as summarized by the apostle John in the Christian Bible's New Testament. While I'm no theologian, my understanding is that we should only be physically present "in the world" & we should not be corrupted by damaging values "of the world" (John 17: 14 - 16). Instead of being led by other people or pursuing worldly attractions like wealth & fame, we should live a principle-driven life to achieve a higher purpose. Of course, this general concept is shared across many spiritualities. The more you study spirituality, the more commonalities you'll find among the world's religions.
