      This kinda reminds me of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Hastily turned into a theatrical movie, it didn't have great marketing and so despite being critically acclaimed, in animation and for taking the story of Batman in a new, unique direction while being a tie-in to the animated series with some neat lore drops, it failed at the box office and led to no other animated DC movie being released in theater's.

      Honestly, the whole box office thing is a scam to see who can make it to a billion. The fastest iron Giant would have had anyone given it a fraction of a chance. Like what was the reasoning that this did not make it to a billion dollars? This movie could have made a billion dollars in a second. But oh no, this doesn't make money these. This was an original idea too by the way and Hollywood is lacking those so much nowadays. Treasure planet was an original idea that Disney came up with and the other day won't ever go back to that. But don't let some half-baked piece of s*** go to a billion dollars and top of the box office food chain and make records well. These ones well. Things like treasure planet Atlantis the Lost Kingdom, ant iron, Giant sitting, absolute obscurity and hated upon when their first released. They do gang cult followings later but the sad part of it is is almost no one knows what the f*** these movies are unless someone tells you about them and then even sadder. Still they're nowhere near in any type of media. They have no presence for selling t-shirts. They have no presents for selling backpacks or anything like they don't even try to create any merchandise thing. Have they done that? They might be able to get some f****** money off of this franchise. But no we don't want to create stuff that people will actually enjoy

    One of the best things about this movie is how gentle it is, without being patronizing. The whole bathroom scene with the disconnected hand is also one of the few well done extended poop jokes in animated history. The subtle hint that Hogarth's father was a (EDIT) pilot who was killed either in WW2 or Korea. And that ending...words can't describe it. It's just phenomenal.

    • @Transit_Biker
      @Transit_Biker 3 месяца назад +46

      Sputnik was launched in October 1957. Korean War ended in July 1953. It is stated that Hogarth is 9 years old, so he was born in 1948, 3 years after WW2 ended. I would guess he died in the Korean War & that his father may have in fact been in both wars. The mother is likely mid/late-30's so the timing does seem to check out.

      Using the CAPS system, many of these features had that rich and crisp 2D look. Later they switched to full 3D animation, but also re-opened the ink & paint animation studio. The message and excution of this movie's message is so simple but heartfelt. People have a choice in their life, do not have to be what they think they were designed for nor do they have to define themselves from their mistakes or past either. Someone with an addiction is not an addiction. A person with a history of screw ups is not a screw up. An iron giant maybe capable of great destruction is not a gun toting nuclear weapon of destruction from outer space. You get the picture. Thus why many really empathize with that scene. There are some figures, real and fictional, who inspire us to become who we want to be by our choices.

It was in a massive old theater with a THX sound system, but it was barely 1/3 full. This screening remains one of my cherished magical and sentimental moviegoing experiences. I walked out of that theater into the sunshine feeling stunned and verklempt. When it was released to cinemas a few months later, I told all my friends to GO SEE IT. I had to share that feeling.
    I never understood how this film failed so utterly at the box office, but I worked for several years at a video store, and recommended it to many parents who had no idea it existed. And in the book I don't think it was the Iron Giant used for that, since the book focused more on 70s/80s nostalgia, not 90s. I want to say the book used Leopardon, Spider-man's giant mech from the Japanese series, but might be mistaking things, it's been a while.

      Alternatively, considering that in-universe, every Iron Giant model is identical to one-another (evident in the scene where he broadcasts his dream), you could interpret that that may not be the Iron Giant we are fond of, but another one of his species.
      Though it is interesting and cool to see Iron Giant in battle *without* him utilizing his battle form (even tho that's actually not him like you said). I know he's a pacifist in the movie, but in a scenario where he has to fend off actual evil, this is so far the most accurate portrayal.

    Dig deeper. Iron Giant based on the 1968 book The Iron Man - but curious that Johnny Sokko (Japanese TV series 1967-1968) also had a young boy in charge of a giant robot that was armed to the teeth and meets the same demise. This has the flavor of Disney's Lion King (Simba) ripping off Japan's Kimba.
