      The original are tropes I'm thoroughly tired of. Realistically, someone would rise to that rank by being cool-headed and adaptable. The hot-headed general trope worked well in isolation to show how out of their depth conventional tactics were to a new type of threat, but especially after the evolution of modern warfare, those perceptions are pretty antiquated. It reminds me of Independence Day which I finally saw for the first time all the way through last month. The decorated military general was the most mindful and realistic of the bunch. Go figure.

      This is an important point, as Dean quite specifically is a Beat. He is named after Dean Moriarty, the hero of the 1950's novel On The Road, an iconic Beat. I would also point out that his sudden clarity about the Giant could be drug-related: during the picnic scene, he has his shades on, and, in line with beatnik culture, was probably high at the time, not entirely aware of the situation until he came down later in the movie.

    I disagree with the deleted scene thing.
    While it would have explained Dean’s outburst more, it would have also kinda ruined both the mystery of the giant (as in what his true purpose is), and would make the ending where he goes ballistic feel less narratively satisfying because we’d be able to call it earlier.

    • @ButrzV2
      @ButrzV2 4 года назад +55

      I completely agree. When he focuses on the gun that killed the deer was the only hint at the giant being what it is until he shoots eye-lasers in the junkyard. Dean has a very believable reaction to it.
      And the arms transforming into weapons is fairly standard when dealing with giant robots, but the extra tendril-like blaster arms coming out the back and the huge chest cannon? Really wishing that wasnt revealed earlier.

    • @roxasrider509
      @roxasrider509 3 года назад +19

      While I don’t necessarily disagree with that assessment, I also think that that’s just one interpretation of a narrative.
      If they had kept the scene of dean watching his memories it could have created a different narrative fear, where the audience is suddenly aware that it’s a possibility and would be waiting like a Jack in the box for when it would rear its ugly head.
      Plus, the decision to exclude the scene was a pointed one. If we had seen it, we’d been given a definitive answer as to why he arrived on the planet. We inferred all throughout the movie but the main assumption was always going to be that he was a weapon, with references to “Atomo the metal menace”, the near constant reminder of nuclear war and the fact that he “consumed” raw silicate material to “survive”.
      Still, this is still just one possible narrative and for the time maybe wasn’t what they were going for. I don’t know what other scenes they had in mind that might have pushed it further than they would have intended.

    • @Thespaceforurmom
      @Thespaceforurmom 3 года назад +32

      A good compromise would have been to somehow edit the scene so that only Dean's reaction to the footage is shown, not the screen itself, and with sound effects audible to the audience. This would give an extra hint on the Giant's capabilities without spoiling his combat form, and we still get a better explanation for how Dean reacted in the toy gun scene.

    From IMDB trivia:
    The Iron Giant roughly takes place over a five-day period (Wednesday through Sunday). On Wednesday night, the Giant crash lands on Earth. After school on Thursday, Hogarth visits his mom at the diner and that night he encounters the Giant. It is now Friday and Hogarth goes to school and afterwards goes and finds the Giant. That night, he meets Kent and then Hogarth and the Giant find themselves at Dean's junk yard where the Giant has food and a place to rest. Saturday is when Kent questions Hogarth all morning. Hogarth visits Dean and the Giant that afternoon, they go to the lake and witness the death of the deer. At night, Kent interrogates Hogarth and informs the army of the Giant's existence. The army arrives on Sunday morning, fights the Giant and the Giant saves everyone.

I fundamentally believe it is not achievable in my life time, nor within the life of my Grandchild and their Cousins. I believe by the time of my Grandchild the foundations for it to be placed, yes. But we’d be in the beginning of a Democratic Socialist economy and leaving behind the Proto-Fascist economy. Last post; the Stock Market is just a fancy casino where you gamble on companies and not an accurate representation of a nation’s economy. Oh vote Biden anyone, why? Not going to lie, I always had my own theory with the Iron Giant of him being a scout for an alien race to see if there were any other species on other planets worth connecting with, rather than being a war machine sent to destroy us, but his full offensive capability was taken by the bump on the head. I don't know, it never made sense to me to build a war machine *that* efficient and then disguise his guns in such a way that it takes him a second to transform and use them- wasting time. (Plus he's so cute- why is a war machine so cute????) And why should a tank be able to learn English and concepts of philosophy anyway? Makes sense if he was a scout trying to gather knowledge on this place but never made sense if he was simply a gun. I don't know- the bump on the head might have "reprogrammed" him, but the Iron Giant was giving me EVE vibes before Walle was a thing, where she's out looking for life, but is also pretty dangerous.
    You can disagree if you want- I can see why people see the Iron Giant purely as a war machine, but I like to imagine it different when I watch the movie.
    But according to my brother, I- and I quote- "watch the movie wrong" so what do I know lol

    I greatly disagree with your take on Dean turning on the Giant and the deleted scene. While the deleted scene was certainly a very welcomed addition to the Signature release as it delves into the Giant's backstory, I don't think it's fair to say it was needed to justify Dean's turn on him. The way I always saw it was that Dean really was warming up to the Giant and becoming his friend like Hogarth. But then when he saw him fire the lasers, he most likely thought to himself, 'Oh god what was I thinking!' before protecting Hogarth, who by the way would've been vaporized if Dean hadn't intervened. This sort of thing tends to happen a lot when real people warm up to someone they don't trust at first, and then see them suddenly do something they were afraid they'd do. It's the nature of the human mind, really.

Immediately declaring him a weapon seems like a proper reaction when he probably didn’t even think the Giant had any kind of weapons.

That and both films had to compete with "Star Wars: Episode 1", so unfortunately one film was more fucked then the other. Didn't help matters that when Warner Bros. was a major animation studio at the time, they couldn't market their animated movies for shit! Until "The Lego Movie", the ONLY WB animated movie that made them an actual profit, was "Space Jam". That is embarrassing. Yeah only thing Critic got wrong was it wasn't Earth getting blown up it appeared to be an alien city on a planet somewhere in outer space, we see a bunch of other giants marching along in unison as well. the implication is that the giant IS a gun. He was a weapon created by some advanced alien empire to conquer and lay waste to other developed civilizations.. I think the scary part is we never see these aliens that created him, for all we know they could be long dead and the giants are just functioning on some kind of automatic pilot command going about the cosmos and destroying inhabited worlds as part of a war that has long since ended. Supposedly the film was originally to have the backdrop of a Cold War gone hot so I can buy that this was the context they were going for in the typical 1950s sci fi trope of the evil force in the film being an analog to nuclear weapons and just warfare in general.

  • @scottbuckley823
    @scottbuckley823 4 года назад +52

    I think doug is wrong it maybe like E.T and Mac&Me but the thing that this movie does great is setting it during the cold war where breakthroughs like Sputnick were considered threats while America's atom bomb considered a solution. this is mirrored with Kent using the Army as a solution to what should be celebrated not feared. so it's an anti violence movie but not an anti government or anti army movie.

    Another scene I would have liked to have seen more of would be the conversation Hogarth and the agent have in the ice cream shop. It would be interesting to hear an adult trying to explain the Cold War paranoia of the time to a child, and it might even make Hogarth second-guess if he’s doing the right thing by keeping the giant a secret.

    Man, I really liked this movie as a kid. Glad to hear I'm not alone.
    And Doug's comment about the death of hand drawn 2D animation is accurate and makes me so very sad. Because frankly, it is just better than live action and CG. Thank God for anime!

      You can say that again. I LOVE hand drawn 2D and if I had to choose between the three forms of film, I'd definitely take 2D. Its just so more tear jerking, creative and more worth the full thing
