I had the privilege to see this movie in theatres way back in 1999. I was the perfect age, 10. No words can describe how thrilling and emotionally moving this film was to me. I still consider hands down without a doubt one of greatest cinematic experiences of my life (right up there with the lotr trilogy and Spider-Man 1). Why this film flopped I have no idea. The trailer looked awesome, so I don't know why too many people didn't make it to the cinema, but as predicted, it has gained lots of success since then. An absolute classic! Thank you Brad Bird!

this is exactly what i was looking for. Ive gone through a lot in the last few years and i sat down and rewatched this film. Only reason i ever saw it on VHS was because my mom's coworker donated it to her when i was very little, since we had nothing at all living in a podunk town in east jesus nowhere tennessee, and the only tapes we had was either my dad's goodbye before he went off to war, and old copies of the little rascal's he left behind. I wish i could have been old enough to have seen this film in theaters, how wonderful that must have been. This film changed me, and is a cornerstone of who i am, down to getting my name changed. thank you for posting this online, anything to know about this film should be carefully documented, archived and distributed, because this film has made my life all the better, and has given me informed ideas on morality, life, and values.
I love this story. Just rewatched in theaters for its 25th anniversary re-release and got to bring my 21 year old younger brother who’d never seen it. It was such a joy and we all cried when it was over. I saw it in 1999 on vhs and have watched it since then on my blu-ray copy but never on the big screen. What a film! It’s pure magic

The point is that the movie itself was made with soul, a lot of people do appreciate and look up to that. They were just hoping to make a movie that people can sympathize or relate to, it's simple that some people value the flim more than others
Neither Fantasia nor Citizen Kane were appreciated when they were released. It was generations later that the public saw them as classics and their re-release were awarded with high BO numbers. I hope the same will be said for this wonderful film.

I remember the first time I saw the iron giant! it was on nickelodeon of all places! and I was able to just see the ending! but I begged my parents to order the dvd version that night! because I wanted to see the rest of the movie! it was late 2000s early 2010s so I don't think smart tv's and being able to play something back on a tv was a thing back then! but I was determined to watch the rest of that movie! not a single movie that I saw on tv had this kind of effect on me before or since! it's truly one of my favorite movies!💗💗💗💗💗🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖
Drew McWeeny was absolutely fucking right! This is not a movie that I like casually, it is a movie that I love so damn much, and that I want to scream from the rooftops about how brilliant it is. I constantly dream of the day where I head off to school and they play this movie, I constantly dream of having the time with someone willing to listen to just spout every single thing that I love about this movie, and I even dream, of some day, maybe, trying to get a group of people together to just animate the Giant being a swell helpful Giant after the events of the movie, and maybe finding his way back to Hogarth. This masterpiece never leaves my mind, any time I hear giant, iron, rock, tree, I think of it, any time I see transmission towers, I think of it! I love this movie, and I would be honoured to shake the hand of all who worked on it.
12:30 Warner Bros hired Pete Townsend to write songs for the movie before Brad Bird became the director. And similar, Disney changed the musical Kingdom of the Sun into the buddy comedy The Emperor's New Groove most of the singer Sting's songs being cut as well.
Just this scene alone just proves that the crew & the film it's self is just a childhood masterpiece- enough to make adults & children cry, that's how powerful this film was & I'm so happy in full tears in my heart & soul that i watched it as a child & as an adult now. 38:47

I remember thinking that the storyboards were oddly dynamic when I was a kid! I never really thought about it until now, but I don’t really remember seeing anything like it until… The Incredibles storyboards… which Brad Bird also worked on! It’s cool that After Effects is pretty much used in the same way to this day.
If I was old enough at the time of iron giant’s release I definitely would’ve seen it in theaters. I was 2 at the time and was first exposed to it when Cartoon Network did 24 hour marathons of it for thanksgiving. Which I dunno why thanksgiving specifically (given it has little to nothing to do with it). But that first exposed me to it and as I got older I got to appreciate it much more.
"Killed by gun violence." "When you shoot somebody, you're not just killing that person..." So the instrument somehow makes the death of his sister worse? Her husband wouldn't have done it another way? To make that the emphasis is astounding.
Bird has admitted since then, that he should have given a second thought to delaying the movie. But Warners probably would’ve still fucked it up and just released it straight to video.
I see Bird doing an enitre animated film about a young animator like himself trying to survive ina place like Disney, only to realize that he needs to stop trying to emulate them and do his own thing; it could animated like a Disney film for the first half to show symbolize how he's under their looming shadow, then the second half could be uniquely animated to symbolize him breaking away from that. If done right, it could stand among The Iron Giant as his best film
When did the inbetweening, inking, coloring, bg art, compositing etc happen? I'm not sure why so many animation documentaries skip this part and just focus on the key-animation =/
35:47 This should have been a red flag. Brad flat out admits he has no idea how to promote his ideas. What is an executive at WB supposed to think if he saw this? At least with Quest for Camelot there was a successful precedent. But it bombed anyway so how is Warner Bros. supposed to believe in the Iron Giant seriously when it’s own Disney imitation failed?
Mainly I think the biggest disaster they made making the film was not setting the release date sooner so that people could properly prepare for it. If it were me, I'd set the release date as soon as Brad was given that green light back in December 1996/January 1997.
@@wildethang93 I don’t think it would have mattered. The Iron Giant was going against every precedent set by previous animated films at the time. It was not a fantasy musical which was the only way a hand drawn movie was making money. WB was incompetent but if Brad Bird showed more prudence maybe they could have taken a bigger leap of faith with the film.
I agree however this was the first film he directed most first time directors don't start big until they go onto their careers. Its the same with Brad Bird the movie is fantastic and there is alot of passion that went to it but its both sides to how it was marketed. You have a company like WB that should have known they could gave that film a better marketing campaign even if their last movie was a disappointment then that lead to brad bird who now was promised alot of things to keep the film afloat to the public and thought he could hold onto their promises but in the end the film suffered because of WB's poor performance. That's why the 90's was such a weird era because hollywood focused heavily on trends especially with animation whatever disney did that was successful every company did the same thing.
