Don't get me wrong, the Sony a7III is a great beast of a camera, but as you'll see in this video it definitely gave me some issues that I feel make my job harder rather than easier. I am all about a challenge, but some of these issues were a bit ridiculous.

I did the same brotha. I had the a7rlll and a7lll but I ended up getting the 1dx mark ii about 2 years ago and I never looked back. Love the dual pixel af, 4k60, and my favorite the 120p slomo. I definitely love the colors out of my canon more than when I did with the sony's. I can't wait to get the Mark lll soon. Enjoy it and keep creating!
Hi Dxpert, Did you get 1DX Mark 3? I am thinking to pick one for shooting sport and birds . I have used Fuji, Sony a 7iii and a7r IV recently. Surprisingly canon 7D and 5DSR colour is still great in my mind...
Hey,
Am considering switching from sony a7riii to canon 1dx mkii is it worth it?
Thanks.
Great video, thank you.
As an ageing Canon 80D & 6D Mk2 user (both cameras and myself are getting old!), I am currently saving my pennies to buy my last ever camera, hopefully.
And I will invest in a 1DX Mk3.
Then I can retire happy.
Keep up the good work.
Subbed. Really good videos!
Eddie Nunez thank so much!!
Justin Romeyn In 2020 with all the newly launched cameras, would you still recommend buying the 1DX mkiii ? Reason I ask is because I found one for a pretty good price point and am stuck between the 1DX or R6...thoughts?
Canon & Fujifilm always gets you Perfect skin tones
beldon gonsalves yep! I have definitely noticed that from fujifilm as well!
Justin Yesss! It just sucks that canon is so freakin expensive but you cannot put a price on color science. I am so amped to see all your 2020 footage on the new Canon gear! BTW that R looks A-mazing!!!
Kostas Lazanas exactly!! Not too far off though if you get used! I know what you’re waiting for though 😜
Great video. As a canon 1DX II, sony and bmp6k and gh5s owner, the colors of Canon are bar none. People will mention here that colors do not matter, but they do. Reliability as well. Details are important specially when working with clients. Not talking about mom and pop shop. Clients with larger budgets and Art directors are involved, etc. Congrats on the switch! Fantastic camera!
ANGEL CASTRO thank you!! Glad to hear that you understand my underlying reasons. Making a video with anything “negative” about Sony seems people bring out the torches lol
Angel Castro. Out of all the camera's you mention. Which one had the best final image in your opinion?
Jimmy h oh man that is a tough question to answer. I would say overall the BMPC6K. Has more of a film look which I love. But it depends what are you using it for. For real estate the Gh5. Overall the Canon 1dx mark 2.
You know the 3 is coming👀... love my A73... waiting to see if Canon comes out with a upgrade EOS-R ,without that stupid crop. The 1dx 3 will probably be more then 6k with the video specs that are planned.
Creative Films yeah some crazy specs on the 1DXiii!! Can only imagine the Rii will surpass Sony specs
Because the 1DX II is a beast
keep it up big fns from instagram
Thanks 🙏🏻 😁
I've heard there's some delay when you use flash on the R.
Mark Shirley gotcha, I only shoot video so not sure on this one
I shot flash indoors for Christmas and didn't experience any delay shooting with the flashpoint system on camera and off camera with a trigger.
The more I learn about coloring, the more the a7iii’s colors hurt me inside lol. The skin tones specifically. Everyone looks like they have jaundice. I created a lut for myself to correct it that I plan on sharing very soon. But I’m strongly considering moving back to canon soon
Drew Kocak amen brother. Big reason for my switch, why make it harder on myself to fix in post? Lol. Canon is just sooo good right outta the box
Great vedio !!! Keep it up 👍👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌 from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
ArthVlogs thanks so much! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Now wait until you start noticing the color difference between the L lenses. My favorite is the comparison between the 100mm f/2.8 L macro and the 135mm f/2 L. The 100mm macro just stomps the 135mm in both color saturation and sharpness. There is definitely a quality of light difference between older canon glass and new canon glass.
Joel Doxtator oooo good to know!! Luckily I do have the 100mm macro and freakin love it!
The three points you talk about here are the reasons why I am sticking with Canon 1DX mark ii.
Good call!
nice vid
Thanks!
@@JustinRomeyn Your reasons are the same for why I'm still on Canon.
I bought a used 1dx2 and decided to sell after a year and got a73 instead. I find 1dx too heavy and cumbersome for gimbal work. Its 120 fps codec is about 360mbps which I find excessive when the image quality is the same with sony, plus i lose the audio. 4k mjpeg codec doesnt suite my workflow as files are too big as well, so im pretty much using 1080/60 and sometimes 120fps. Im happier with the sony in terms of video. For photo, I kept my 5dm4 since its imagery looks more organic and dreamy. Skin tones - true that canon is easier to deal tho its magenta-purple shift I hate esp when using sigma art primes they are so pronounced. i dont get those with the sony bodies. All it takes is grading /correcting. There’s no perfect camera, just work with what they can give
Some reviewer did a blind test on colour science and the a7iii was actually the winner... If you would compare it to a7sii for example I could understand but the sony a7iii is spot on. Isn’t dynamic range better on sony? If yes then How can this rollout be better on canon? Did you match lighting? 1dx is definitely a tank for sure.
It's all subjective, I've seen great things from Sony shooters and I was a Sony shooter for ten years. I agree with this guy though, Canon just looks better straight out of camera to my eye too. I shoot with all formats of video, C300 XF305 6D Mark ii 5D Mark ii all canon now because the colours the usability and value for money. In the end if your happy just go with it.
Color Science is something photographers like to worry about but the client “Does Not Care”. I have shot with Canon, Nikon and Sony and not one person ever commented on the color. Photographers who have found a platform on RUclips love to critique and criticize features and specs on cameras that mean absolutely nothing when it comes to capturing an image that will satisfy 99% of the people. I have a Sony A7iii, a Fuji X100F, a Canon M3 (APSC mirrorless) and a Ricoh GR3. They all take great photos and I have made photo books with images from all of them. The average person would not be able to tell which camera took which photo. Oh, I forgot about the Sony RX10 MKiii that has a 24-600mm equivalent lens and a 1 inch sensor that I printed a 2 page spread in a book and you can’t tell which camera it was taken with either. People that switch cameras all the time are never satisfied and will always keep switching. I do believe that RUclipsrs in particular always need a reason to make a video and will come up with all kinds of ideas and scenarios so they can crank out a new video. Switching brands and reviewing cameras is driven in many cases by the need for content. I think it would do a lot of photographers good to spend more time concentrating on shooting and less time worrying about the features of their camera that mean very little when it comes to capturing an image.
The Essential Light agree 100%!! It’s not about the camera or its color science, it’s about the person behind the camera. Definitely the smallest reason I made the switch
This guy is on the money. 'content creators' are hungry for new content, which is completely fair. However, your reasons and justifications for this move not only seem backward, but also completely unnecesary. Anyone looking at either of these two cameras shouldn't heed anything within this video as it's just, to me, slightly silly reasons for even making a video, nrvermind switching systems altogether.
Michael Ball Did I absolutely NEED to make the switch? No. But after having 3 hardware issues with the a7iii within the first 18 months of owning it, really gave me cold feet about the build quality. And yes, from a video standpoint the specs are very similar, however the build quality is drastically different. I need a camera that’s going to hold up under filming LOTS of content. As with all my videos on my channel, I am expressing my own opinions, which everyone may or may not agree with - so you are definitely entitled to disagree 👍
Actually real clients do comment on colors. When working with art/ creative directors , trust me they look at colors and every little detail.
@@JustinRomeyn actually color science does alot, it reliefs from stress of trying to color grade or color match. Time is money!
color is subjective, you can tell the difference between sony and canon colors, I can tell the difference if it its side by side, but 99% of the costumers cant tell the difference, especially when is color graded in post, so I think its not worth it, and how much heavier your new set up will be
stojkovski89 exactly! Definitely had to weigh out the pros & cons. Very subjective for sure, it’s just as I grow as a filmmaker I’m growing to love the canon colors more and more
straight to the camera canon give a better image, Sony is not the best for color grading because the profiles to this are Slog, and Slog are crap on this little cameras, in blacks, dark scenes etc.... color temperature is bad and skin tones yellowish. 99% of people like Sony for better low light performance on cine2 and 4. but a camera is not better for use hight ISO. You can notice it in real cameras like Alexa and Red... So, for this type of small cameras it makes perfect sense what Justyn says
I hate spending so much time post processing to get the colors right. I'd rather be up and about doing other things than doing post processing.
why not get the canon 1dx mark iii ? get better of everything in 1dx
Alghufran Khan it’s definitely in my consideration!! Don’t know if I’ll hop on right away since it’ll prob cost $8k lol
Justin Romeyn hopefully not 8k cause I’m sure Nikon D6 won’t cost that much, cause it needs to be affordable
Yaaaa I hope not either! They definitely need to have competitive pricing!
Lenses are cheaper and ef is a bonus
I was thinking about this as well! I use 120 a lot, and thought the 120 quality on the canon wasn’t as good as Sony! Good review though!
Trevor Allen and I think it’s much better, and higher quality (bit rate) - but that’s why everything is subjective!
How u compare btwn canon 1Dx2 with sony a7m3. Sony a7m3 is basic model of sony . Compare with sony 7RM3 then u will find sony is better than canon. Another nice thing about sony is Emount system so u can use variety of lenses with E mount system than canon.
Abhijeet Kaulavkar not comparing just saying the reasons I made the switch
the real reason is u want to pump up the biceps with heavy canon camera :D
Слава Герасимович 🤣🤣😂
you cannot shoot the A7III in 110 to 120 degree weather...... it shorts her out ......or better said it melts something inside......I shoot with a Canon 1DX MK III and also Have a 1DX MKII ........
Who you sure got a lemon
More interesting if you switch from Sony a9 II
Maybe for you. It’s all subjective. I’m 100% happy I switched to Canon
Canon 1dx 2 is a great camera but sony science color are not bad maybe people have not a good white balance ... that ‘s all!
LY PICTURES yep white balance is a huge part, just seems Sony’s color science is easier to screw up vs canon color science is just easy
Justin Romeyn i m waiting 1dxlll or a7slll 😉
LY PICTURES 10 bit!!!
Justin Romeyn YEAH!!!!
Whilst the real ones own both a Sony and a Canon at the same timec
Your talking head video color looks pretty washed out? 😕
Was using CLOG on EOS R cinema matrix. Colors don’t look as good as the neutral matrix
I don't know why you even did the video who are you trying to convince...I did my research I could have bought any camera I wanted but after realising I wanted the dream camera ....I realised 4k 60p is what I wanted ...with mega mega bitrate real cinema style negatives ....So I purchased a real cinema camera that does mjpeg..800mb/s with nice colours and deadly fast af.... the only camera that can challenge 1dx ii is the Fuji...10bit 60fps 4k is a real challenge...But when I see the vids...canon just nails it...I love 1dx mkii for what it does ....dam if it had a Sony logo..I'd still love it....But I must ask why did u make this video who are you trying to convince....because by now if they don't get it ...they never will....I make mistakes too
the color science is the only thing that i hate about my Sony A7iii.
Abhishek Swami that was definitely a big factor for me switching. Hopefully you don’t experience the hardware issues that I did with the a7iii
...I actually love the color science on my Sony A7iii... and I also own a canon 60, 70 and 80D.
GarCorMediaProductions that’s great! Color science is subjective so happy to hear you’re happy!
U lost me on this one
#85filmz #85filmz too confusing?
@@JustinRomeyn I just dont understand the switch I feel the sony is way power.... the eosr cant even focus on ur face good enough..... and the 1Dxii has less megapixels and bad for portrait
#85filmz #85filmz oooh my needs are only for video. Durability/reliability was a huge factor for me after I was having sooo many hardware issues on the a7iii....and the EOS R eye autofocus has been 🔥 so far
You went from an a7iii to a 1dxii? The a9ii would have been the better choice. It's superior. Prove me wrong. Also, you can adjust the color science in the sony camera so color science is a stupid argument.
Montana West Photography thanks, it’s all subjective just my preference and I’m loving it
Montana West Photography I agree with you. The only thing better than the a9ii is the a9iii it’s ultra ultra superior prove me right. Do you know what else starts with C Crap. That’s why Canons are Crap....can’t wait to pre order my IDXMlll😉🤷🏼♂️. I hope Justin goes to H
awaii
@@KostasLazanas All jokes aside, Mirrorless is the future and your new 1dx miii will be the last flagship dslr canon produces. For Justin to suggest that "it's all subjective" is simply wrong. Specs arent subjective that's why they are called specs. The a9ii is far superior to any dslr on the market now or in the future this year. Both canon and Nikon market shares have dropped considerably and will continue to do so if they refuse to compete with a mirrorless product both in performance and price. My advice is to sell your dslr's while they still have value. Both you and Justin will go mirrorless eventually because nobody will be making dslr's for pros much longer. Prove me wrong?
Montana West Photography go to any real professional sports event and see what brand they shoot. Hint: it’s not a Sony.
Not picking sides. Just speaking truth.
@@xkben90 Actually many do. The sports photographer for the University of Montana in Missoula shoots an a9. A DSLR is his backup. I hung out with him at a game last summer. His name is John.
