Gordon Laing excellent review!! As a bird photographer, I’ve been using the still great 1D Mark IV matched with the 600mm version 2. Works great together, but the camera is showing its age. I’ve always hated the feel of the 7D/5D for bird photography as you have to add a silly grip and all that to make it feel good in the hands. I’m hoping to move up to the 1Dx Mark II once it comes down a little more. Do you guys sell any used canon cameras? Thanks!
@@MrGflan sounds like the right choice for you! No, I don't own most of the products I review - they're on loan.
Gordon: "nobody is going to vlog with this camera"
peter mckinnon: hold my filter
I just came to write the same comment 😂
🤣🤣🤣
"Of course nobody's going to blog with this camera"
Don't look behind you Gordon, but Peter McKinnon is *right there*
He's stronger than I am!
#CameraConspiracies will use it to video squirrels & #MarkusPix will give one away because....🤔 well he can afford it .
That's just what I said to myself when I heard Gordon make that comment Akshay. Pete has been vlogging with the 1DX MkII for a long time and likely will do the same with this new 1DX MkIII.
@@kreygscott I imagined more of a horror scenario where Peter slowly emerges from a mist behind anyone who says the 1DX3 can't be used for vlogging... And then slowly says "Bwhats up everybody" in like a chilling voice.
Yeah but let's be honest that's the same guy that decided to use the Canon EOS R to "limit himself creatively" 😂😂😂😂
A very good overview of this rather impressive camera. Yes, DSLRs aren't dead, they're a well proven tool for many photographers, especially on some jobs like sports.
Always great to see Gordon testing out new cameras! Thanks again!
You're very welcome!
You’re the best at “first impressions” videos! Great job.
Thankyou! I put a LOT of work into this one.
I second that
I've switched to mirrorless a while ago but I must say, what an incredible beast, and awesome tool for the pro!
WOW... This thing is a beast! I really love how competition provides us with great tech.
Your reviews are the best and I know you put a lot of work into your videos. Thanks as usual for your hard work.
Thanks! You're very welcome!
This was insanely thorough and well done. Nice work Gordon!
Thanks Jordan, that's very kind of you to say that! I think we were some of the only folk who've actually used one. I enjoyed yours and Chris's too x
I don't know any other youtuber who does this indepth of first impressions.. I literally got to know every little detail. Gordon you are best 🔥
Thanks! I put a LOT of work into them!
Great review Gordon, I'd been looking for something comprehensive before I purchased it and this ticked all the boxes. Told me everything I needed to know. Thanks so much man. 👍 I'm getting this to use as a daily driver with the 6Dmk2 has a second fiddle and your review answered all the questions I had. 👏
Great stuff! PS - if you order online, please do consider going via my links here or in my review at cameralabs.com thanks!
I watch each of Gordons reviews. Very informative, interesting and detailed videos. One of the best channels about cameras. I have noticed some bending (or maybe its just a RUclips compression) on 17:17 over cup glass.
Thanks!
This is one of the best review, more field test and real scenarios are appreciate, there are almost non of videos which tells about how auto focus works in practical , quality of pictures etc
Thanks! I always prefer to watch videos by people who've actually used the product. I'm never comfortable just talking about something I've not used.
Fantastic and comprehensive review. Thanks, Gordon.
Loved your face during the frame rate test, Gordon :)
It's the only one I have...
What a beast of a camera. Thanks Gordon, great job.
Great review Gordon, as usual. Lots of work gone into these.
Great and well balanced, factual review, Thank you!
Thanks, I put a lot of work into this one!
Good review once again. Thanks Gordon!
gordon your a legend. i used to watch you when i was still in highschool.
Great work as always Gordon.
Thanks!
I’ll use this camera for everything!!!!!! Vlog, weddings, sports, Portraits !!!
If I spent 6500 on a camera I'd use it for everything too!
Great video Gordon , easily one of the more in depth review of this great camera ! Thanks
Thanks, i worked hard to get as much in there as possible...
Great review. Thank you. If I were shooting the Olympics I would buy the 1dx markiii. For now I am sticking with 1dx Mark ii and 5d Mark 4. The new RF glass looks amazing. Hoping for an EOS Prob to be released soon.
You are amazing, first hands on that one, fast as usual 👍🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for the review 👍🏻👍🏻
You're welcome!
My name is DSLR Forever. I'm augmenting my DSLR arsenal while the mirrorless anarchy goes on all around. Already bought 5D, 5DII, 5DIII, 1DIV & 7D. Now, gearing up for 1DxIII and EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM. Already using EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II with EF 2x III on 1DIV. 400mm would be fun with 2x on 1DxIII.
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome! I think pentax is still making new DSLRs too, but for everyone else, it's mirrorless going forward.
@@cameralabs yes I know about Pentax. When my existing arsenal expires, will think about Pentax. The current gears are likely to last at least ten years from now. So, not worried about it rather, concentrate on photography.
EVF lag of mirrorless cameras is huge obstacle for me for wildlife shooting. Moreover, the fragile bodies do not look and feel comfortable in my hands. I observe wedding photogs use those like point & shoot cameras. So, no thoughts on those.
@@quazisanjeed6395 not all the bodies are fragile, have you seen the Canon R3 or Nikon Z9?
@@cameralabs, I've seen the Z9 with my fellow wildlife photographer friend. He's always complaining about the weight of that behemoth which beats the main claim of mirrorless cameras being lighter. It's only 34 grams lighter than my 1DIV requiring the same standard tripod and gimbal head as mine to stabilize with a super telephoto on it.
Moreover, compared to his camera, my camera works at the speed of light (OVF) to see and capture fast action instantly. Furthermore, 1DIV reaches out 30% more than full frames.
Real photographers know the advantages of their DSLRs and are not washed away by the hype.
Thank you for your thoughts.
@@quazisanjeed6395 I've never been a fan of companies selling mirrorless on lightness. This was some misguided marketing in my view. It certainly has the potential to be smaller due to the lack of mirror box, but like any tool, it should primarily be comfortable and effective to hold and use. Who wants a mini hammer? And in fact the initial smaller mirrorless cameras didn't sell well, especially in the US, so the companies gradually made them bigger, in part to suit the large US market. The real benefits of mirrorless are full-time electronic composition, allowing the camera to meter, focus, subject and scene detect using the full sensor information. Being able to preview effects like black and white or different white balance as you compose. Focusing at the focal plane, eliminating AF calibration errors which became increasingly apparent on higher resolution DSLRs. Providing assistance for manual focusing, like peaking, magnification, not to mention being able to adapt just about any lens from any system. Assistance for exposure like zebras. Easily integrating IBIS and benefiting from stabilisation on any lens, including adapted vintage ones of you like. The reduction in moving parts also makes them more reliable long-term. And the only real downside for me is the lag and resolution of EVFs, which are electronic issues and hence something that are improving very quickly and will be resolved for the majority. Already the best EVFs are delivering a better experience for me personally than the best DSLR OVFs. Ultimately though, it IS a personal choice and I wouldn't want to see DSLRs disappear. They're the right choice for some people, although I genuinely feel the benefits of mirrorless make them more suitable for the majority. I made a video about why I prefer mirrorless, having previously shot DSLRs and SLRs for many decades, but I equally appreciate I am not a high-end sports or wildlife photographer, and I know many of whom prefer DSLRs. I do believe the 1Dx III will be the last of its kind though. That said, I also expect it to last for ages as it's so well made. Hope you enjoy it!
Very useful info. Thanks Gordon.
My hands shake too so I noticed and i know how frustrating it could be..

Fantastic review as always Gordie!
Thanks!
Thank you for another excellent review!
What a fantastic video, mate!! Keep up the good work .Thank you very much!!!!

Great preview ty
Having always admiredthe pros with the 1D series for years...i finally got 1DX mark ii on sale.and it has not disappointed....im also Loving my 5dsr got it used with 550 clicks. Certainly not a brag but oh my the 5dsr is ridiculous
Nice!
Love a good Gordon review!
Thanks!
One of the best review among the bunch! And that Vlog part was fun, surprised to see Canon's EIS outperforming IBIS.
Thanks! And yes, the electronic stabilisation wasn't bad was it?
@@cameralabs I find it to be very good!
GREAT VIDEO
Absolutely brilliant preview/review Gordon. This camera really needs a good tracking comparison with the a9II. I had the 1Dx and now the a9, love them both.
I'd love to compare them side by side fr a variety of subjects...
Silent shutter.? Awesome camera and need to upgrade from the 1DX
The AF system and certain features will likely trickle down to the 5D5 and future RF bodies. Hmm that 5D5 is going to be a beast. Can't wait to see the high resolution R and possible R II.
that look after you hit the motor drive. I laughed out loud. Nice review, thanks mate!
You're welcome! And that's why i can't ever be a pro sports photographer, as I'd do that look after every burst.
It's a beast and glad still a dslr 👌😃👍
I have also ordered three lenses Cannon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III ($11,999.00), Cannon EF 200mm f2/L IS ($5,699,00), Cannon EF 11-24mm f/4L ($2,699.00) USM Lenses. And Profoto A1X Flash Light. I hope it will be great for all kinds of photography. I like your video
In video, when DPAF doesn't work, you can use Focus Guide or Focus Peaking.
this is an awsome camera
wonderfull look at the new canon
Great work
Thanks
Cheers!
My goodness Gordon, that's a big one..... Wouldn't fancy blogging with that beast on the end of a stick... 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Sick content yo! Can't wait for mine to finally come in ugh
David Le has it arrived yet?
I am desperately waiting to buy it.
I personally want this camera
today… we have the Z9 and the R3 // but i still love mine!
comprehensive information here!
Thanks!
- Gordon: Of course no body's going to vlog with this camera
- every other youtube travel vlogger: am I a joke to you
Can you scrub slow mo footage with the touch screen on review ? And does it have separated custom modes for video and photo mode like the eos r
No scrubbing - it's automatically slowed to quarter speed.
@@cameralabs but can you skip to the centre? like on the eos r it always takes forever to play when its slowed down on the the mark ii to review you're footage in the field
Nice job.
Thanks!
Very well done. The vlogging bit was a welcome giggle 😆
It would cool if the .HIF function came to the 90D via another firmware update 🤔
Hmm, good question, I wonder if it could be a firmware thing on older models...
Always enjoy watching your videos. I think this camera is a little out of my price range though!
Thanks! Yep, it's not for most of us, but I think HEIF and DIGIC X will filter across the range.
2:16 love your face, Gordon.. lol
The best and the last Canon DSLR, Long live the DSLR! I bought one last year. Upgrading from my Canon 2012 Canon 6D.
I so want one ....as usual Gordon You are the man ! Canon 2020

You're welcome!
nice video. good detail mate
Thanks!
That shutter is so crazy
I still prefer optical viewfinder for most shooting, as what I see through it feels more "natural" / "similar" to what I want to capture.
That's what a lot of the sports pros told me too.
Oh yummy, yummy Gordon, another great view of a stunning bit of kit, a true halo product I will never be able to afford ! I could say I want one but the truth is an M6 MkII body is the most I am likely to afford this year mind you if I had one I might finally nail those Kingfisher pictures I'm always chasing - nah bit of overkill really :)
The points you make about this camera are of course spot on, it is a truly pro "tool" rather than just a camera and in this sense being a DSLR rather than mirrorless is an obvious choice right now as you said perhaps less so in 4 years time. I shoot wildlife with a 7D MkII and landscapes with a 5DS and whilst they are very different cameras under the hood, in terms of handling, menu/controls etc I can switch seemlessly between them, the camera isn't a barrier to me getting a picture so familiarity matters, even more so if your living depends on it. In fact with this in mind, Canon would need to start feeding in a mirrorless version based on the R body within 2 years from now at the latest if they wanted to convert their existing user base would be my guess.
I have original 1DX since 2012 I was thinking to get new 1DX lll but now I know that the speed is not everything so will just get 1DX ll which is good improvement to original 1DX in image department
You are so good at this Gordon. You sold me on it and I don't even shoot with Canon 😁👍
Cheers mate! 🍻
You're very welcome!
Illuminated buttons, finally!! Where has this been all this time Canon!? I hope they trickle that down to their mid range cameras in the future.
Impresionante !!!
Hopefully not the last DSLR.
Some of those features would make a good reason to have a nice 6DmkIII ;)
can you test how much is different HEIF to RAW during editing? How margin has the RAW compared to the new format? =)
Hi Gordon, Thanks for this great review. I do have a question. One of my biggest problem with the 1DX Mark II is that I always have a lot of dust on the sensor. I often clean it but despite my efforts I found that this camera is a real dust magnet. Did you find any improvements with the Mark III ? Thanks a lot for your attention and time.
Jerome
Looks like the Ascari Race Resort... nice
Sure is,been twice,a friend is a member..Always some press junket setting up or dismantled when I've been
I booked Pre-Order from B&H . It’s $6499.00
If you went via my price check, I thank you very much!
I am excited that this body finally appeared. Now Canon please release the 7Diii please.
Yes, but should it be DSLR or mirrorless?
@@cameralabs An updated DLSR
If you shoot with a hussleblad or an other medium format dslr, you really get hocked to the feeling of looking through the optical viewfinder.
I use a gh5 for video, but nothing will beat the mighty old analog hussleblad in fun for fotos.
The 3.2 inch screen is perfect for anyone who still has one of those eye piece viewfinders. There's one that converts into a waste level viewfinder.
Great job as always, love your reviews/tests. Sports and wildlife camera for sure. I want one, its been a long time since I splashed out.

This new DSLR is the top sports camers on paper. Let's see what the upcoming Nikon flagship has to offer
Yeah, I wish they'd release more information...
That's one sexy pro camera. I need is as badly as I need a Hummer for my daily commuting.
I would love to see an alternative version where image quality and higher resolution is prioritized over speed.
5D?
@@jacksonheydon9141 Not really. I'm looking for a pro-body. Besides, the 5D is really old now and no replacement will be fielded.
I hope the DSLR will continue, forever even if mirrorless is the new fancy thing.
I hope the same! I'm a big fan of the DSLR-s. I like heavy gears:)
@@cretuoctavian8114 it provides so much more battery life...
Last time my 90D shot over 1700 pictures and still have 30% left lol
Gordon ... this is a sight to behold in 2024
Hopefully we'll have the mirrorless version before long!
Gordon, great review! Do you know if the 4K 60fps with AF crop is 1.5x or 1.27x like the 1Dx II? I have seen conflicting reviews. The canon website just says "cropped"
It's possible to calculate it based on the example footage I posted in the video. Just screengrab the uncropped and cropped footage and compare the reduction in the field of view. I'll be doing this for my final review.
That smart controller is definitely a great feature for future models
I really liked it...
I think if canon put that on the 5D Mark V, I'll buy it. Hoping for the 5dv to have that new 45mp sensor they registered recently too.
Also like Fro said, if this is what canon has put into the 1dx mk 3, then it's a sign of great things to come in the mirrorless space too from canon.
@@KPAki1Ler yes I'd hope they put it on the next 5D and the next high-end mirrorless
22:50 - 4k25p doesnt look very detailed? was hoping for an improvement over the 5d4 / r. probably because you are using EIS and shallow DOF. Excellent overview btw, one of the best i have seen on RUclips.
The vlog stabilisation was good! This will now have to be your main vlog camera, you will need bigger arms tho
Er yeah! It's no coincidence that vlog section was so short!
I wish u more strength Mr hulk😁😁😁
and at 13:21 the blue square focuses on the asphalt and misses the car while wondering on the bottom, while the white box is manually placed over the car, HAHAHA!
Does it support send selected pictures via wifi FAST to the laptop? (for sports photography) without WFT as well?
Not sure yet
Is there still Dual Pixel AF at 119fps?
What do you think about this camera’s landscape photography performance?
Both the D6 and 1Dx Mark III have auto face/eye detect focus.
How would you rate the differences between the Mark III vs the Mark II from the pure photography point of view? I owned the Mark I and thought that the improved AF was worth the upgrade to the Mark II. Would you say the same for the new one?
very thorough presentation. However, did i miss the mention of the 525 focus point area in live view? Wondered - does that only work if you select AF area as Full? thanks
The manufacturers can be a little sneaky about how they count and implement AF areas in live view. There are normally lots of areas available to the system, but during composition, Canon shows you a fairly coarse array - you can see it when I photograph the racecars in live view.
@@cameralabs - thanks Gordon for the clarification ;)
Hi Gordon, do you believe that the Omd EM1X rivals this camera? Which one is the most cost-effective in your opinion for those working in sports and wildlife (especially in the forests of South America)? I currently work with M43 and APS-C and am interested in measuring the need for an change. Greetings from the Black Forest and congratulations for the excellent work!
This or an R5 I’ve scratched my head so many times my brains started to smoulder 🤯 I’m primarily a bird/nature/wildlife photographer and a libra ♎️ I can never make my bloomin mind up Gordon! 😫😂
Do you prefer optical viewfinders over electronic ones, and do you mind - or indeed prefer - the heft of the 1Dx III?
Gordon Laing these are the golden questions Gordon lol, I’ve never looked through a digital view finder to be fair however I hear that there is a lag from when you eye it to when it shows what you are looking at so maybe you could miss any immediate surprise wildlife sightings 🤔 is it anymore bigger than an R5 with a battery grip fitted? I’ll probably need to go to Park cameras and hold and view both. I really appreciate you replying buddy it’s very kind of you 👍😊
@@JPLamoureuxsTravels very happy to help you make the right choice, so fire-away! PS - if you end up buying from Park, please do so via one of my links to them at cameralabs.com thanks!
is that the Ascari race track?? 😃 Been there a few times it is awesome
14:58 You switch between JPG and HIF: but JPG seems to resolve much more detail in the asphalt/background than the HIF?
Agree with this. I noticed right off the bat, the JPG has more detail in both highlights and shadows. The histogram also tells it.
Hi Gordon, thank you so much for review as usual. After watching it, I’m trying to decide between 1DX Mk3 and R5. I most shoot photos and not much video. I usually shoot events, so very dark places and people moving fast. With my 6Dii, 5 out of 10 shots are blurred & can’t use them. If money is not an issue, which one do u think is better?
Do you prefer an optical or electronic viewfinder? Do you prefer the size, weight and build of the 1Dx,?
Gordon Laing I always like how meticulous you are! I have a strong connection with DSLR system as I used it for the past 25yrs. I prefer Optical viewfinder as I cannot quite get used to the Mirrorless & it’s viewfinder. I do prefer smaller body, but performance & built quality comes first. Hundreds of times, the moment i wanted was Not captured because the photos were unusable. Either too blurry cuz environment was too dark for the camera I was using OR I missed the frame due to slow shutter speed of 6D. I never had a chance to handle such a top of the line camera as 1DX and I always wanted it... now that I have enough funds, R5 comes out to get me all confused.. maybe stick to 1DX? What do u think?
5:07 that ISO though.. we are in the world of ISO'thousand'-ish is the new low ISO..
