Canon 1DX Mark III, Sony a9 II, Review, Comparison, Camera Review,
#FroKnowsPhoto #JaredPolin #CanonVsSony
Which would you go with if you were statting out fresh today? The 1DX Mark III or Sony a9 II and why?
Sony a9 II, size and I got alot of FE lenses already.
1DX Mark III
Has a high frames per second
Great for video shooting
Weather resistant
Robust
Can fit perfectly (For big hands)
Detailed
Has a great autofocus
High quality image
Hey Jared small error in the video the 5.5k raw is up to 60p not 24
Hey! Just wondering if there is such a thing as an EVF that can attach to the Canon hot shoe (like on the M6)?
Canon. Track record, build quality.
I'm just here for camera news because i'm sick of covid-19 news while being locked-down !
I will never be able to buy neither and thanks for the review/comparison though! The prices are higher than Everest Mountain !
Welcome to the club my friend!
Sure I got $6000 Canadian to throw away on a camera body... NO WAY !!
@Gerald Heitman ( It is $9000 Canadian ... for a 1DX Mark III )
and even being able to buy either of them doesn't mean it's a good idea if photography is more of a hobby for you than actual job
I live in a third world country with a $300 a salary. I have good camera equipment. Buying stolen goods.
I'm disappointed Jared. You said "X" twice and even made the hand gesture but not once did you play "X gon' give it to ya"
Lol me 2
hehe that's probably reserved for Photo News Fix stuff. :)
hah. funny.
CF cards are very expensive…advantage Sony for 95% of us.
That fact that the 1DX can shoot 20 fps both mechanically and electronically and that with full RAW, plus the incredible battery life and ergonomics (so much more buttons ;)) makes it the best camera!
The Nikon D6 is in self quarantine because it tested positive for Covid19
It's dead in the water. LOL
Fro, I'm super-near-sighted with astigmatism in both my eyes and could never shoot stills or video with my thick eyeglasses on using any camera's optical view-finder, my sight it too bad to use any camera with my glasses off, and contact lenses or eye surgery isn't an option for me. In this case, would you recommend my buying a mirror-less camera with a large LCD screen or using some external attached monitor or monitor/recorder? What are the best options for extremely near-sighted photographers, videographers, and cinematographers for stills and videos over 30 minutes long (like presentation recordings) and under 30 minutes long (like product videos/short recordings)? Can you made a video or videos on this? Thanks. Jim.
thanks for your entertainment Jared! you and pete got me into photography. I went L-mount alliance with a panny S1. Give us panny guys some content! cheers.
Thanks a ton Fro and team! You guys are kick-ass!
"There are Fros and Cons on both sides", I appreciate your jokes so much lol.
I appreciate this consistent stream of content because all my professors are scrambling like a chicken with their heads cut off due to being forced to switch to online, so I'm just bored here doing absolute nothing
All I care about is the sniff test so I'm sticking with Canon. Thanks for the detailed comparison Jared!
I'll pick both from burned stores to use it as self defense stones during the upcoming zombie apocalypse!
In this regards Canon definitely gets a check mark. Can't kill it.
Paul Kretz 😂
Get a nikon d1
Epic dude
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!! THANKS, A LOT FOR THE REVIEW!!!
Thanks for all your efforts and videos offer them and the comparison between the cameras they are very useful. I enjoy all your videos. I have got more excited about photography.
Real question, would you spend the money on the 1DXmiii vs 1DXmii? Is it really worth that extra price tag?
Canon, but that is where my glass is invested.
At 9:07, the photo on the left is actually the Canon in electronic shutter mode, there are many stripes because of the slow rolling shutter.
the buffer aspect cannot be understated. I had to borrow an A7R3 for a couple shoots and I hated the buffering. Not only was the amount of images in the buffer low, it took forever to write down all the images from the buffer to the card. And you can't do anything while it's writing to the card!
That is a prime reason I have stuck with 1Ds all these years, from the 1D Mk III all the way to the 1Dx Mk III. And even I was surprised the first time I shot with the Dx III at how unbelievably fast the transfer from buffer to card took place... It's a beast.
Jared, no matter how much your big hair annoys me your videos are always so pleasant having Christmas lights in the background. Thank you for that. Always a thumbs up.
Question. Does the Sony have those blackouts between taking images? I recall seeing someone testing the Canon R5 camera and showed how the camera would blackout between shots and cause you to lose tracking of a bird. So, does all mirrorless cameras have this issue?
at 20 fps, you better have pretty large capacity cards or a lot of them for how quickly you'll fill them up
It’s not what camera you have, it’s what you do with it. They’re both excellent cameras that will get you the shots you want, you just have to use them. I always thought that being a photographer and obsessing about cameras is sort of like being an author and obsessing about typewriters. At the end of the end nobody cares what kind of typewriter you used to write your novel. It’s the same with cameras. Just go out and shoot, be a photographer not a nerd.
The R5 _may_ not need to dumb down the speeds, what they _could_ (and probably will) do is basically make the cf card act as a buffer as well as normal storage, transferring the images to the sd from the cf while you're not taking pictures. Or have 2 options, write to both simultaneously (slower but safer), or have them write in sequence (significantly faster but _slightly_ less safe).
1DX MK lll video has Full Frame 5.5K RAW up to 60fps - not 24fps. AF works up to 30fps in Full Frame 5.5K RAW but no AF in FF RAW 60fps.
csound I caught that as well. Good eye.
Big fan here! Wish you upload more sir!
Thanks Jared, nice work!
Really great video !
I like how the A9 grip is almost the size of the camera
Reclusive Eagle I love Canon because of the grip, I have big hands.
Your videos are absolutely brilliant! By the way who would you give a checkmark to for low light?
Fro, could you not take the EVF designed for the M6 mark II in the hot shoe of the 1-DX mark III to have a full mirrorless camera?
Hi Jared. First of all I would like to thank you for the content and help you have been proving us with you with your videos. I want to ask you opinion between 3 lenses I am having trouble deciding for portrait photography. You helped me before choosing between sigma 14-24 f/2.8 and sony FE 12-24 f/4 G for landscape photography. Now the lenses I have in mind are sony FE 85mm f/1.8, sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM and samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 EF. At first my plan was to buy the GM but I recently found out about the other two. The quality of the photos seems to be very similar across all three. If thats the case im very inclined to get the sony 1.8 because the autofocus seem to outperform the other two. My concern is the quality and performance GM lenses are meant to deliver, the bokeh from GM is a lot better and the fact that it is weather sealed. The samyang is just because it seems to deliver great quality for a lot less money than the GM. What are your thoughts?
I would choose Sony GM over anything. Used sel85f14 is around 1300€. Also Jared would suggest the 135 f1.8 GM, he has a review of it. I've watched comparisons of both and the 135mm is slightly sharper than the 85mm.
@jaredpolin you missed the most important factor between the performance of the a9/a9ii and the 1dx mark III. The a9 is a bit stickier. BUT, the canon just knows what you want to focus on. It is insane. I typically shoot in full area af. I let the camera decide entirely what to focus on. The a9 and every other camera could not do that anywhere near as well as the 1dx mark III. This is THE FACTOR destroying the a9 in regards to focus.
Wind tunnel test results:
Canon 1D X III: ✔️
-more curves for less drag
-much like a brick
SONY a9 II: no check
-too square
-tilting screen adds drag
-battery grip adds a drag point
Why tilting screen is bad? Its much easier to photo from under or upper prespective with tilting screen right? Im noob and im confused why they didnt implement flip screen to 1x mark 3. Please explain
@@1oo480 they didn't add flip screen for more durability... flip screen tends to be less durable and the 1dx series are oriented towards wildlife, sports, action photography in which camera tends to be more abused so durability is needed.
I will likely never buy a flagship camera such as these, but it’s fascinating to see the current state-of-the-art tech. Thanks for an interesting comparison. PS The Canon wins the wind tunnel test due to its lower coefficient of drag. The Sony has a smaller frontal area, but is clearly a much less aerodynamic shape.
Could you use an hotshoe type EVF on the 1DX Mark iii (like the one featured in the M6 video)?
Jared, if you could choose just one for portrait/all-around use, which would you choose? The a9ii appears to have the edge with Eye AF, but can the 1DXiii do well in that department through OVF? Or only LiveView?
1Dx is not a portrait camera. Look at it this way - the 1Dx is not a portrait camera; the 5D is not a sports shooter. Each one has it's strengths, but they don't cross boundaries very well. Used to, an 18.1 Megapixel camera would have been thought of as a great, densely pixeled sensor to shoot portraits, landscapes, etc, with. Now, with 20, 30 even SIXTY(!) mg cameras out there, the DX III is still the best sports shooter in town. If Jared is right about the A9-III? Sony has just won the game, but I'll keep both my DX IIIs, AND my 5D IV, 'cause I remember my .75megapixel point and shoot.
DSLR has focusing points clustered to the middle because there is another sensor for focusing while in the DSLR mode and there is not much space to mark that sensor larger...and it costs more to make the focusing sensor larger and they have to make the refractive prism and the mechanics also larger which will increase the camera size and weight...
Stacked sensor? Do you mean BSI (Back Illuminated Sensor)? Because stacked to me is Sigma's Foveon sensor design.
All that really matters in a sports camera is how well the AF tracks the subject. The buffer is big enough on the Sony for short bursts which is all experienced serious shooters do anyway. The video specs are nice on the Canon, it’s time for Sony to beef theirs up. Also the Sony is a lot less expensive.
10:10 A DSLR has the focus in the view finder to work with the mirror down. The mirrorless has focus built into the sensor so they can be wider on the image.
Great video thank you so much
Good stuff, as always! Can’t wait for your R5 review.
Why is it not possible to use an external EVF (in the same way as an extertnal monitor) on the Canon, do they not exist?
Did anybody check if the optional EVF for the M6ii works with the 1DXiii? I know, it probably doesn’t, but it would be fun if it did. (And if it doesn’t, maybe they should make it work with a firmware upgrade).
The M6 II has a different kind of hotshoe, so it won't work. It has small contacts under the front portion that are out of sight, like what Sony uses for EVFs and microphones. Canon DSLRs don't have this, though it would have been amazing if they did, considering how usable DPAF has been in Live View.
I'm thinking if I had a dream 2 camera setup it would be a 1dxiii and r5.
I can't buy it, but I think it;s matter of which one is easier for you to get also lenses.
Deciding what to buy is always the hardest for me cuz there's too many choices lol
Still running that 1DXm3 and I do not see myself moving from it for a long time.
I shoot RAW on a APS-C.... 7D MkII and 24-105mk I and 70-200 mkII, not the best but they ar build like a tank (also got a 5D mkII, another tank
)
Great video thank you. Is it possible for Canon or another manufacturer to make an add on EVF for the 1DX-II ? There is a EVF-DC2 for low end mirror less but is not compatible with DSLRs.
Canon 1dx iii has focus peaking function like the Sony a7iii has?
The BIG question is what camera did you use to make this video ?
Pls do a comparison between canon 1dx mark iii and nikon d6
Where did you get your Sony eye cup? I always get light leak in bright sunlight that makes it harder to shoot.
The eyepiece cup on the Sony full-frame cameras are included when the camera is purchased new. It's already attached. Replacement ones cost $10-12 at camera retailers. I lost the cup on one of my two A7III's fairly quickly. Google your camera model and "eyepiece cup" and you'll easily find it.
@@anthonyc1883 Wow, the cup on my A7 III is rock solid. I don't even want to try to take it off, because I've applied so much pressure on it so far, it feels like I'd snap it in two instead of popping it off.
Does anyone know if the 1DX has an APS-C or S35 Mode like the Sony does?
26:40 1DX mk. III looses focus at 60fps. 24 and 30 on 4k FF and 5.5k raw do have AF.
24:50 Dose it work when your finger is wet ? ...
Hey Jared, you have a shirt just like mine! If I was just starting out I would not get a flagship camera $$$$. Between these two I'd go with the Canon since I have Canon glass. My resolution for this year is to dare going above ISO 800. You sir, are an entertainer. It's good to be entertained and enlightened at the same time.
The limit on the DSLR focus points is
1. Physical size of the AF sensor
2. Lens vignetting at the edges
Is it really so bad? I mean even 1\3 of stretching AF-points would make much difference...
It really has to do with the optical system. The angle at the edges distorts the sensors. That’s why no DSLR has sensors out to the edges.
Can the 1DX markIII use the Canon EVF-DC2 Electronic Viewfinder like the EOS M6 markII
I'm not convinced about the color banding issue. The LCD image has moved between the time of the Canon shot and the Sony shot. I think in both pictures, the reflection on the floor is a pretty accurate representation of what is currently on the LCD screen. That isn't banding in the Sony shot, it's what the image really looks like. By the time the Canon shot is taken, the tiger has faded on the LCD screen. That's why it looks smoother on the wooden floor.
To stop your nose from selecting autofocus on the Sony I have the active area for touchpad AF in just the top right corner. You can roughly put the autofocus box where you need it and then refine with the joystick. Panasonic introduced touchpad AF in the G6 a god while ago, every mirrorless camera should have it.
Brother what kind of Cannon zoom lens do you use in sports photography
YEAH, FROKNOW RAW PRESETS 👍
DSLR focus points are limited by the size of the sub-mirror behind the main mirror that redirects light to the focus sensor in the bottom of the camera. Since the AF submirror can only be half the length of the main mirror, because of the size of the mirror box, it can never send light to the edges of the AF sensor, unless the sensor is significantly smaller than the main mirror. This is also why AF points near the edge usually perform worse than the ones at the centre, because they get less light. For cameras that have a mount that allows a larger sensor (Like APS-C Canons with the EF mount), they can get away with an AF sensor that covers more of the image area, because the sensor is smaller in the same size mirror box.
cdn.photographylife.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/How-Phase-Detection-Autofocus-Works.png
kinda wondering how long youll be able to keep up your chanenl of late. right now photography people need to just put it on hold unless your doing photos of nature/landscape without people around......it sucks. i just upgraded to an a7 III plus the 135mm g master lens mmy first pro lens but now they are sitting in a drawer likely for a few months but HOPEFULLY after all this crap is over ill be able to finally do what i want to.,just stay safe!
Then use the lockdown to REALLY learn postprocessing. I have had Affinity Photo for some time now and I love it far more than Photoshop. And it's on offer at half-price for €27.99 at the moment instead of 12€ / month for the Adobe Ripoff alternative. "Quarantine is just another another opportunity" or as John Lennon said "Life is what happens while you are making your plans".
Lets got one thing straight, a mirroless camera does not mean a better camera, just a different type. Because it doesn't have a mirror, it comes out as lighter and smaller, but as far as photographic quality is concerned, their is no difference. Canon proved that since you can lock the mirror in the 1DX and for all intents and purposes, operate it as mirrorless camera. One more thing, the electronic view finder is always on in a mirrorless camera. So despite the battery life issue, it still burns more power than the TTL reflex camera does.
Zack, I made notes as I watched when you asked the first question.
Ideas for activities:
I have been making coloring books out of animal photos using Photoshop. The first of which is on my zoo's new activities web site. I have a blog post with the instructions. I will be publishing them weekly.
This could just as easily be good for taking photos of your pets, or even the kids themselves, and have them color the pages. I recommend that you check the colors of the longest crayons in the box and have them wear that color. It mat be tough getting new crayons.
The zoo also posted one of my animal wordsearch puzzles. You can keep kids busy with those (even though they are not photography related unless you use photography related words)
If we are busy doing things for others, we are less likely to feel sorry for ourselves. If even for just a few minutes.
Average View Duration
It is more likely that the average time is such that people look at the video and decide right away that they don't want to finish, while the rest of us watch all 19:41 seconds (the duration of this video) for example. So it balances out.
Duration of videos.
Longer is fine right now, but in the long run, most people can spare more than about 5 minutes. More than that may mean marking it for watching later. Which, if you are like me, is a really long list. Or was, until the Shelter-In-Place order.

Looks like you posted to the wrong channel.
Expandable up to “Swiss cheese” mode 😂😂
The mirror in DSLRs is what causes the AF points to be clustered toward the center of the frame. You cannot use the entire surface of the mirror to redirect some of the light from the lens down to the AF sensor.
You are forced to grab a portion from the center of the mirror. You cannot go all the way to the edge of the mirror.
Yes and no. There's a sub-mirror underneath the main one (main is for viewing and metering), which directs light passing through the main mirror down to the AF module. The sub mirror can only be so big, as it rests under the main mirror when the photo is taken, and everything is flipped up. I'm assuming the size of the AF module also affects price dramatically, as it's a pretty unique imaging sensor.

Good video Jared!
One thing you missed when discussing the Canon is that it is EF mount only so it can never take advantage of the current and future RF lenses. Huge drawback in my opinion!
well, the Sony will never use RF glass either
@@procarepharmacy2931 true but it appears no further development of EF is occurring whereas there will be new Sony lenses in the future. Sony is better set for the future.
My Canon 1dx mark III DESTROYED my a9/a9ii in general quality and especially iso performance. Once you hit 3200 with Sony, you start to make serious concessions. I would venture to say the Sony is at least two stops behind the mark ii and 2.5-3 behind the mark III.
8:17 that light blowing up in the background at the left
hai sir what is main diffrenets between a9 @ A9 MARK 2 iam a wedding photographer
Not looking forward to buying all new memory cards(CF Express) when I get the R5)
What are the best CF Fast cards on market. More interested in reliability and affordable price.
Not looking forward to buying memory lol, that's nothing on the glass.
But at least with glass I can use my old lenses with an adapter. And upgrade later.
The video specs are totally wrong for the 1DXiii. The 5.5k raw and 4k h.265 both go up to 60fps. And you can AF in raw just not at 60fps, just as it is with the 4k h.265
Olympics cancelled, no live sports. Anyone need to upgrade to either one?
J H2007 That is so sad, this situation is driving me crazy.
Can still go birding! 👍
So sad is reality
The R1 gone come in like: Whatcha doin?
I can't wait for the R1 just so that someone can make a video with an analogy to the Yamaha R1. The best from the best that Japan has to offer.
when you put in the high cost of ALL of the full frame glass for Sony, the price of the Canon starts to seem a lot better choice.
Shooters who run these bodies don't care too much about a small percentage difference between cost of the gear so much as they care about the functionality of the systems themselves within their workflow.
Asmund Erickson sure if you buy from Sony. Tamron and sigma glass is just as good if not better (see tamron 70-180 vs Sony 70-200) where the tamron doesn’t suffer from backfocusing like the Sony. And it comes out at like half the price
Is that heman back there on his cat? Props!!
Jared polin sir your choice canon 1dx mark3 or sony a9 2
He says his preference at the end of the video.
canon 1dx iii is out so hopefully one day i will buy a used 1dx the dream!
If you are looking to shoot sports, get a used Nikon D5, D500 or Canon 1DX and used glass. They are cheaper (usually) and more reliable. Love the Sony A9 and A9II as well.
I'm happy Canon is doing great lately
That a92 is an absolute beast of a camera have one use it it's great
I would love to see if Canon could add a EVF on the hot shoe similar to the Canon M6 until they get an R1 out in a few years.
Only if it has the advanced hotshoe contacts that the M6 has. Which it most likely doesn't.
To make a big camera even bigger?
I don't have Canon, i shoot with A7R4 , But if you compare the build quality with 1dx, Sony a9mk2 like a toy. The 1DX build like an tank. Still hoping Sony make some real pro body like the 1dx .Especially the GM lens and 200-600 g really need an bigger body to handle those big glasses .
Noone of them cuz i don't have money :)))
same
You cry when you buy them. The first camera I felt was worth the $6k is the mark III. Every other pro dslr, and even semi pro often times, from Nikon Sony etc I never felt like they were worth the money. I would have paid $10k for the 1dx mark iii. I'm going to get a second one at some point. It is that damn good.
Same here
Same here😂😂😂😂
Canon should have made the OVF exchangable for an EVF like nikon had with their i think the F5 (Diffirent OVF).
the size is my gripe the a7 and a9 are to small and need to get rid of the sd card
Any chance we can see a little more BTS stuff at your studio?
Great & Funny video!
A remark though...the battery of the mark 3 is the same as the mark 2 - The fact that the mark 3 allows considerably more shots than the mark 2 is a question of better electronics
Do you have light room presets for phone mobile
"Real world" tests are relative. It appears that Jared's tests were done in well lit arena's. For me, "real world" means poorly lit high school gyms. How well does the 1Dx III track basketball players in high school gyms with a 70-200 f2.8L at ISO 8000, 1/800, f2.8? This is my world.
In my experience, the 1Dx II will drift out of focus during some bursts under this light. But, when shooting in an NBA arena with four times the light (ISO 2000) focus tracking is very reliable. I would like to see "real world" tests that show how well the 1Dx III face detect feature tracks players in poorly lit gyms and whether the tracking actually translates to tack sharp images.
I have stoped thinking about expensive cameras as we are in complete lockdown here in India.. Wedding photography business has suffered there is no work for next few months and even after that people will not spend money on weddings as they used to do... This corona virus has killed too many not only physically but economicaly also
Weddings will suffer till at least September but as soon as lockdown gets lifted the amount of companies that will require photographers for ads will skyrocket
Thoughts on the em1x?
Why no just put an external EVF on the Canon?
I don’t think any External EVF’s are compatible with the 1DX3
It's not possible because there is a mirror. And evn if u flip the mirror out of the way the main display is gona turn on. So u will have 2 digital displays going on which will introduce lag and bad battery life.
Would break the weather sealing.
The dx3 in silent shutter has rolling shutter issues.
Now we also have the Canon R5 as an alternative to the A9ii.....that makes the decision tougher
You don’t mention the rolling Shutter problems on 1dx3 😁for shooting sports on Electronic Shutter 😷
