Australia's largest media organisation just auctioned off all its DSLRs and moved to Sony APS-C kit instead. It started when news photographers were saying they were sick of lugging all that heavy big gear around and started leasing their own Sony a6400's. Now the default is an a6600 with the 16-55 f2.8. One other body with a longer zoom optional. Also they put a 30mb file size limit on uploads. They have stock presets uploaded and now they send jpegs via wifi to their iPhone 11 which acts a as a spare camera, and sends them direct to the news server over the 4G network. 5G will make it almost instantaneous. Videos are 1080p/60, max 10 minutes, to keep the file sizes manageable. Its all about carrying less kit, eliminating old school processing workflow and making photographers much more mobile.
Very interesting. I've seen at least a couple general assignment Chicago news photographers on staff at one of the papers and they don't carry the 1DX models. Don't blame them. Just not necessary for ordinary reportage. 5DMark-whatevers, if I recall, and only one had a battery/vertical grip.
I'm way late to this dance; my used Mark III should be arriving Monday, and I'm like a kid at Christmastime. I'm only a serious hobbyist, nowhere near a professional, and this camera is clearly more than I would ever need (I've had all sorts of good results with my EOS 300D, 20D, and 7D). I totally appreciate your candor and objectivity about the Mark III. But you know what? I'm turning 60 in a few days, and this was my present to myself, and I have a pretty clear conscience about that! Really looking forward to working with this thing!
I hate when reviewers downplay certain features because they don’t see the use for it themselves. Sure, raw video is nothing to the casual shooter, but for filmmakers, it’s a game changer.
This is basically the Canon 1DC mark II. But cheaper. This camera is gonna get used in a lot of Hollywood cinema rigs because of its size and raw ability.
I think tilting screen and IBIS would compromise the overall bullet proof ruggedness of the brick action pros have come to expect from these line of cameras?
Well I was also hoping there would be IBIS, but then again, who needs IBIS for a camera that is designed to be used with monopods? I mean yes it sounds appealing and all, but for the real professionals what does it account for? If you shoot in dark, you typically use flashes or other means to light up the subject, IBIS wont save you and you cant write off everything on it... If you shoot sports all day, IBIS wont save your hands from the weight of the setup but the monopod is a must... If you shoot landscapes, tripod is a must... So really what does the IBIS account to? only casual photographers and those wont really bother with this kind of setup... They will buy cheaper options and those will contain IBIS it seems...
Thanks for pointing out the limitations on reviewers who receive pre-production models; that's an important distinction which purchasers should keep in mind -- particularly when evaluating a $6500 purchase.
As a 2x 1dx mark ii owner here are my gripes: No ibis No flip out screen Still not sure if it has Autofocus in 120fps Haven't heard if it has time-lapse to video in camera. I think I'm almost ready to switch to Sony... I thank you for the disclaimer at the end canon have tricked me in the past with their tactics, I'm waiting and always will from now on
I hate to say it, because I like your channel: You simply don’t know, how the new AF-Module works with the OVF and you also don’t know, how the DPAF in liveview has improved. But you tell it as it was already a fact, that DPAF is not fast enough for true sports photography like the A9 and that 16fps with the OVF is marketing BS. Wait with such statements, until you have proof.
My thoughts exactly. I imagine that DPAF would be improved massively with a much faster processor, which, to my understanding the 1dx-iii has a single processor that's 3x as fast as the dual processors of the 1dx-ii.
Buddy: useless? You do know that most arri Alexa and red cameras (that they shoot hollywood films with) shoot in super 35 so i Guess they are useless to.
@@Jackourd If you have real money you buy a RED or an Alexa. Not a Canon or Sony. This isn't a video camera for pros. It's a sports and wildlife photographers camera. For photography.
Excellent review thank you. I suspect that about half way through your video you were talking about the low pass filter and you meant to refer to the mark II but you actually said mark III which did not make any sense in the context that you said it. Thank you.
I am not a pro but I see many youtubers saying that pros don't shoot in live view, agreed. But pros use tripod or monopods and I don't see a reason why on a monopod or a tripod live view can't be used when the situation demands. Btw Thanks for the review Tony.
I'll use live view on occasion with the a9 but only when I have to (like some basketball player is wayyy close and I can't be blind but I still want the shot) But the thing is about the mirrorless cameras is they have that sensor that detects your eye, so taking my eye off and looking at the viewfinder is nothing, it's just instant switch back and forth. With the 1dx it's going to be a menu setting or button or something, no one needs that hassle.
The last few minutes of the review were gold for me. Talking about how you can't critique the photos and being an unpaid beta tester was the best, most honest portion of the video.
Canon cathing up sony, but I still prefer smaller cameras, the weight of the equipment i am carrying is very curicial i try to carry 2 cameras several lenses gimbal flash 360cam to do more creative jobs and use the advantage of variety of tools depends on the situation. Having a light camera body makes a huge difference in every way . Thanks for the video 👌🏻
My dad ordered two of these for me for my brothers wedding. Now I got to learn how to take a photo with it. Where would you suggest I learn photography? I've only got so long.... Can't wait to take photos on my vacation in the fall.
Tony's focus is on matching the product and the user. I think he, KaiW and Heilbron are the most matter of fact on YT. KaiW actually goes out, shoots & shows. He is 'different'.
I don't get why the mechanical shutter doesn't produce banding and rolling shutter artefacts at 1/4000th or 1/8000th of a second. The two curtains only reveal the whole sensor up to around 1/250th of a second shutter speed. Beyond that the second curtain will begin to cover up the sensor before the first curtain has opened up fully. And at 1/8000th only a thin slit between the two curtains move across the sensor which results in a difference of time between exposure on the bottom part of the sensor and the top part of the sensor.
As a Sony user, I might not be right to ask this question, because at the same time I think why not use a Sony A9II with 20 frames per second with EVF and no blackout, and who uses the screen with a 70-200mm.f.2.8 or yet more telephoto lens in front of the camera? The time for these DSLR cameras is over in a few years, and in four years for the next Olympics we will look back with a smile on our lips when we think of this dinosaur!
Jess Demant Aggeboe 20FPS electronic shutter which the 1DX matches the A9II, however the A9II doesn’t get close to 16fps mechanical shutter. That Sony pixie dust working its magic.
J. Kimmer well, not entirely true though. As technology advances the refresh rate of the EVF WILL get better and better, even now most of them have 120hz and that comparable to what most high end gamers are using on their rigs. Apparently 240hzs is the point where you won’t see a single tear of any kind. Heck I think it was LG just release a fully functional 300hz monitor. You may hold on to your OVF for a little while my friend, but there’s no reason to be afraid of using an EVF in the near future; I can hold your hand if you want 😂
@@MrAyybee2cold The A9's have a proven capability to track focus at 20 FPS, the 1DXM2 could only achieve 10 FPS with tracking focus. It will be interesting to see what the M3 will be able to achieve, but will likely be less than 20 FPS.
Good video, you are right about deciding not to do previews anymore if you can't the show camera results. I suppose many youtube channels are more than willing to have a scoop of a new camera preview, but these previews are just a trick by manufacturers to attract customers if you are not allowed to criticise the camera.
04:46 No, Tony, rolling shutter is NOT eliminated by a focal plane shutter. Just with CURRENT electronic shutter tech it is less, but it is not eliminated. The thing is that it still takes x-sync amount of time and extrenely fast moving subjects and objects will distort.
I think in the future it might be wise you actually getting a camera and testing it out before trying to make comments on its performance. Looking at the live view performance of actual production Mark 3 cameras, it is easily as good as the Sony and can track football players and fast moving subjects without any problems, although I do agree with your comment that holding a dslr out in front while looking at the rear screen is really difficult especially with say a 300 f2.8 or larger lens.
Great review. I am a Canon fan...I just started getting into Photography and bought an 80D and i love it. Once i get good enough i will most likely go FF and depending on how many lenses i have will probably stay with Canon. But i must say we have the Sony a7RIII at work and when i picked it up...held it...and looked through the viewfinder i was blown away. We also have a D610 and i like that as well. So i agree with you on 2 huge issues that in this day and age are taking way too long to become mainstream and that is 1) Hybrid Viewfinders and 2) 4G/5G sims in the cameras for instant cloud backup.
@@paulbarnard5267 - hmmm....so, rather than the product tilting, get the consumer to spend more on lenses? No thanks...heck, my $2000. camera has tilted for years, and I use it every day I shoot!
@@paulbarnard5267 not allowed by whom? He said in the beginning it's a compilation of the facts that he gathered from others. He doesn't have anything to test on now, he will buy it later when production is ready.
subwarpspeed by Canon of course. When provided with preproduction equipment you sign an agreement on what you can and can’t talk about. Tony made that clear in his video. The fact he mentioned it and the way in which he mentioned it and the fact he STRONGLY advised people to wait for real review suggests, to me at least, there was a major issue that he was not permitted to talk about. He also talked about frames per second many times. I wondered if it is something with that or focus accuracy or not supporting certain focusing during burst.
And since he clearly did not sign any agreement..he has cleverly worded his presentation to subtly point out his concerns??? Hey Tony, don't worry about it man. We can speculate on your behalf ..thanks for pointing us in the right direction..😜
Adetunji Oyewunmi then why did be specifically tell people not to place a pre order? He has never failed to grab the kick back on preorder of other cameras? The warning was so out of character and so emphasised that it makes me, at least, wonder what’s behind it.
Thanks Tony, it is just not clear the reason you mentioned the mechanical shutter will completely avoid the rolling shutter effect. When using a mechanical shutter with speeds lower than the flash X sync speed that for the 1DX MIII is 1/250s, the sensor will be completely exposed as the case of an electronic shutter. For speeds higher than the flash X sync speed as the shutter is built out of two curtains and in those faster speeds they can't move fast enough, at no point the entire sensor is completely exposed. As the second curtain starts moving before the first curtain is finished the exposure occurs as a "line" of exposed sensor and could produce the rolling shutter effect as well. So why it is completely avoid with a mechanical shutter and could be an issue with an electronic shutter?
It sounds like this camera will require a gimbal on a large tripod or, at least, a large tall monopod for video or mirrorless mode work. Maybe a cloth shroud, pulled back from the camera and covering the photographers heed and shoulders, could be used to professionalize the arms-length viewing stance imposed by the fixed rear screen and lack of a combo dual-mode OVF/EVF.
I would disagree on the nature of reviews. almost any manufacturer will make claims about performance; not just for cameras, but for any manufactured item. A reviewer has the opportunity to affirm the good features, draw attention to significant features(both good and bad) and offer up criticism of features. You really need to summarize all of those things to offer up a complete review.
This is a really good review! As a Sony shooter, I want to see some real competition and this should provide that. My only complaint is that in demonstrating live view you keep using a lens with a short focal length. Trying to chimp the back screen with a 500mm f/4 might be a really interesting demo of a significant problem.
@@AcidicDelusion , a valid point. But then perhaps it would be more realistic for reviews and public demonstrations to always show photographers walking around with monopods rather than hand-holding setups with short focal length lenses. Also, have you ever tried LiveView in the golden hour with the sun at your back?
Hello Tony, Any thoughts on high ISO performance between 1DX Makii vs Mkiii? Does Sony have better high ISO performance compared to canon 1DXMkii particularly interested in Sony a7R4
A7III has better high ISO performance, but the A7R4 has the worst high ISO performance of the current Sony cameras. The pixel density is too high. Though, people don't buy 61MP cameras typically to shoot high ISO....and people don't buy 20MP cameras to shoot architecture and landscape, so different tools. I own A7III, A7Riii, and A7R4. I shoot architecture professionally, and for that the A7R4 is a dream. Get it anywhere over ~ISO 320 though and it's noisy...over ISO 1600, forget about it.
Loud&Clear thanks a lot for your response. Primarily for wildlife would you recommend a Sony A7R3 or Canon 1dxmkii? Because sometime we need to bump iso in wildlife photography due to weather conditions
Riyaz Ahmed I’d take the A9 over both of those, with the 1DX2 a close second. The Sony R bodies work best when stabilized. Having said that, as long as you have enough light to keep your shutter speed high enough, both of the Sony R bodies will take much more detailed images.
I get banding on cameras with mechanical shutter all the time shooting sports. Depending on the lights will depend at what shutter speed. If the lights are cheap 1/250th and up I get it. We are talking about the banding seen because of the light’s flicker right?
Thank you Tony/Chelsea. Your comments on pre-production reviews makes so much sense. I have a question on IBIS in general... logically (which I’ll admit may be flawed...), it seems like it would be better if the image showed up at the sensor stabilized (lens IS) vs having the camera trying to both stabilize and perform AF. I get all the reasons why IBIS could be a benefit, specifically with lenses with no IS, but what is the better design? IS helps AF, but should the process be serial or parallel? Thank you!!!
For this kind of gear IBIS is not needed, because all the pros will use this camera either with external stabilization or tripods monopods... IBIS only helps for casual photographers and those wont buy this expensive camera.
Imaging having the option to upload the taken images directly to amazon cloud...no compress, no limit...data limit will be your only enemy. No need of memory cards or atleast no need of second slot. They may use that space for internal wifi
At 21:44 starts the most important section of this video. And probably the answer why one should watch it at all. Well done. If I'm interested in ads about a camera, I'll watch their official site. In a review, I want some valid and useful info.
I think the 16fps may be a little more than theoretical... From the Canon white paper: "One specific improvement in AF system speed is that the rate of separate AF detections during AI Servo AF shooting is significantly faster in the Mark III camera. In other words, in the brief fraction of a second between shots at up to 16 fps, when the mirror is in its down position, the AF system performs more sampling operations, more separate AF readings."
@@hwirtwirt4500 Most of the fastest lenses out there are Canon made.. The USM motor was introduced in like 1990 and still is the fastest AF motor by todays standards.. The 200mm 1,8f and 200mm 2f lenses using these motors still are the fastest focusing lenses by todays standards... Even the cheapo 85mm 1,8f USm is bloody fast.. So it all depends on the body...
19:19, isn’t that Nikon instead of Canon having such a patent or have both of them a different one? However, Fuji supplies all X100 since ever with EVF and OVF in rangefinder form factor.
Having a camera with usb-c is a game changer. I work with a Lumix S1H and being able to plug it into the wall while charging another battery in the charger is the best. It absolutely should be standard for all professional cameras.
As a Nikon user, I too share a great excitement for the new generations of cameras that are coming now with incredible video features for the price. But I am having a hard time understanding this from a business point of view? Aren't they effectively undermining their more advanced line of video cameras?
Craig, are you a sports photographer? Just wondering if you, as a sports photographer, what you shoot with now and why this camera's tech is 2018? Since this camera is aimed towards wildlife, journalism, and sports photography. It seems that everyone has an opinion, but I've yet to see one from a professional sports photographer. So I'm hoping your "funny" comment has some real insight as a sports photographer.
The advantages of this camera over the Sony mirrorless counterparts are obvious (listed in order or importance): - a built-in GPS chip (in My opinion, its most important strength) - S-raw, M-raw - Heif codec - Illuminated buttons - Unlimited cache (but the cards cost an arm and a leg at this point) - Some video features missing in the Sonies - Direct compatibility with somewhat more affordable, but still quality EF lenses. But (much as I want a GPS in Sony mirrorless bodies, support for S-raw, M-raw, XS-raw, as well as Heif), the Sonies (both the Sonies handily beat the Canon on most counts): - Much smaller and lighter - Mirrorless (i.e., an electronic viewfinder, no redundant parts (such as a mirror and a pentaprism) in there, etc.) - Quite a bit more affordable (though still rather expensive) than the ridiculously expensive pro-grade Canons. - Considerably higher resolution sensor in the case of the A7r -series and somewhat higher resolution in the A & A9 II. - Much more visually appealing than any DSLR. At any rate, Canon deserves some credit for equipping [some or] their cameras with GPS chips and for support for S-raw, M-raw and now - also HEIF.
I got opportunity to play with this camera 2 days ago on Canon demo, its absolute top beast.Nothing comes close how fast its AF is and how fast its shoot in serie, like machine gun! With long lens it was really feeling like I shot with machine gun.Incredible.EOS 90D,EOS 5D Mark IV don't even come close compares to 1DX Mark III in AF speed. Some idiots claiming about this camera is obsolete, but they just nothing understand in professional sports photography.
Mistake about banding, it can still happen with a mechanical shutter as it has a limited speed. Only a global shutter will be able to completely eliminate it.
@@LeonWei Yes but that's something else, although it's important too. It can only detect 100Hz and 120Hz too. So, not useful for the very fast LED lights.
10 FPS I get on my Nikon D500 is more than fast enough for me. I suppose one could put the camera on a monopod or tripod to eliminate the stress of shooting a heavy camera in live view. Those back screens suck during the day in sunlight. I hope CFExpress drives down the price of XQD? They have went up in price since I got my D850
Excellent review. It is the best I've seen so far. The reviews that raced to be on RUclips ASAP after the CES announcement missed several of the limitations that you clearly identified and clearly described. Those other reviews were useful but in comparison, they were superficial compared to yours.
Reading between the lines of what Tony's saying I think we can expect there to have been some reasonably important issue/issues with the pre-production model; when someone's recommending you hold back on getting them a slice of 6.5k people should probably take note!
@@WilliamSpencer90 Tony didnt has his hands on the 1DX Mk3, but other reviewers did. I dont read anything between the lines. The video is 5.5k not 6.5k.
As usual, a lot of complaining from people who this camera isn't made for. - "No tilting screen". This camera is not made for vloggers. It's for people who are behind the camera. Adding a tilting screen would compromise the build quality with additional moving parts. People shooting video at this level will likely be using an external monitor anyway. - "No IBIS". This camera is for shooting action at fast shutter speeds where IBIS has almost no effect on the image. People shooting at this price point are using IS lenses and shooting from a monopod/bipod/tripod or filming on a gimbal anyway. - "No USB charging". Pros don't care. They already have several fully charged batteries in their kit ready to go. If you want a mirrorless camera with all of these features then go buy one and enjoy it, and stop complaining that this tool doesn't meet your needs when it isn't made for you.
I’m looking at getting a 1Dxiii now in 2022. How are the file sizes for compressed video in 4K and 1080p? I’m not professional for video I just enjoy it so don’t want massive files. Also do you know how easy is it to transfer compressed photos straight to a smartphone or tablet? Thanks. Great review as per. Love the look of the camera such a solid workhorse.
While this high-end camera body is interesting to learn about, I would much rather see an intelligent and in-depth review- good or bad- of Canon's 90D. I think there are more of us mere mortals and common folk that could afford the 90D camera body than a 1DX III.
“Kind of theoretical 16 fps” no it isn’t, the time for both af and shutter and mirror to move between each shot is calculated into those 16 fps. That’s why it’s 20 with mechanical shutter in LiveView. You don’t need manual focus to achieve the max fps. But, in lower light or things that are difficult to track it may slow down, or one can choose to prioritize fps or tracking. So it’s not just theoretical. So many things wrong in this video. You have no idea it can’t track a soccer player running. I just saw a video where they’re tracking racing cars at 20 fps in live view without issues.
moo , obviously you are the one who is clueless. He said that live view AF SPEED wasn’t fast enough, nothing about how it handles erratic movements, and I hardly think anyone will outrun a race car flat out down a straight. And yes I am contradicting what he says. Because in normal daylight you will absolutely have 16 fps through VF and 20 through the LCD. He rambles on about that you won’t hit 16 fps because the mirror is in the way, absolute crazy talk. I had 14 fps with the 1dx2 and I had 12 with the 1dx, but you can prioritize to have missed focus and just do 16 fps without focus being confirmed. That may or may not give you oof images more often than a more «sticky” tracking setting, but to say you can’t hit 16 without manual focus is plain wrong. And it’s not exactly the first time.
Until Canon has linear lens motors, Canon's camera bodies' focus speeds will be limited by their lenses. They'll always lag behind Sony until they fix this and manufacture faster lenses.
Appreciate your frank discussion and advice. I may be thinking about this camera differently than most. I am looking at it as enhancing the ability to get good video without an operator whether the operator is on a second actual video camera or I am doing something on my own that day. 1DX Mark III has eye detection in addition to face detection in live view. My impression is the autofocus is significantly enhanced rather than just a tweak. As you said nobody really complains about the AF on the Mark II but I think there is significant improvement in AF which speaks to just how good it probably is. Not just new tech but many more focus points and much faster processing of AF which should result in a higher hit-rate of in-focus shots and less hunting in video mode. My thought is on a tripod for one-person shooting you could probably have really shallow depth-of-field and not have the camera hunting for focus. Not only that but since it has the so-called "deep learning" tech if you wanted to turn away from the camera and look at something while talking presenting a side profile or even with back to camera the system will continue to track your head rather than refocusing on something. You can also adjust more parameters in how the focus behaves. I believe the eye tracking and recognition of human (head rather than just face) is available in live view photo and video modes - maybe limited to crop modes for 4k 60? Am I missing something or will the Mark III be significantly better to set on a tripod and move into field of view for one-person production than any other Canon camera? That is kind of how I am looking at it - much better "unattended" shooting. Put an Atomos monitor on the hot shoe facing you and let the camera worry about focus. Record 4K 60 to Atomos to get around expensive CFexpress cards. I think it also gets around the 30 minute limitation. So am I looking at this wrong? Wouldn't the 1DX Mark III be the ultimate single-camera tripod setup for someone who wants to record themselves without a camera person?
let me get this straight... it's awkward to shoot while holding your camera out and pros don't do it... yet it would be nice if there was a tilting screen because otherwise when your camera is low you have to get low?! and you just assume that the DPAF won't be able to keep up, yet they show a train (with no real edges) coming head on to advertise the 20fps in live view... further testing required.... i'll admit, this camera is out of my price range and frankly not made for me to shoot my dogs running around in my yard, but bro, you gotta be consistent with what you want/claim a feature is for. also, you should've probably put 10/20 fps for the sony
Sheesh... haven't you seen sports photogs and journalists shooting over the heads of crowds? The train had a tonne of reflections in the metal nose for which the PDAF can latch onto, c'mon! Plus how do you know the train was shot in live view?
Indeed, This is made for the top line pros, who rarely shoot hand held, because when they go to work they work for 8h straight on the field using monopods and tripods... This is camera for hardcore work, not weddings and basketball maches...
@@leticiali i was commenting on what he said about how pros only use the viewfinder, then complained that there isn't a tilt screen. as to the train, they were soft edged warped reflections of clouds, as to the live view guess, well it said "up to 20 fps with servo during live view" on that clip so I can only assume...
Crop gate ? You mean the 1.5x 4k crop in the a7r3 when in high quality mode ? Or, perhaps you mean the 1.5x crop in nearly every other high end professional video camera ? I reckon you are a Canon basher troll.
It's over priced Tony! Its a fantastic camera with amazing capabilities but is it $4500 better than a fuji xt3 with is tac sharp photos and 4k 10 bit 422 video? Or you could buy a nikon d850 and a panasonic gh5 for great stills and video for less. It's now gone well past the point of diminishing returns. Canon have always disappointed in 4k video spec and its taken them to make a $6500 camera to finally produce high quality 10 bit video, but as usual there are crippling limitations like no dual pixel autofocus in 60p?? In a $6500 camera?? What are they all about? What is their problem?
@UCi9AbnSieaum9NVM-yVUoJw I do. I will keep my A7R3 for my Ronin and use the Canon for my main camera. I hate the small form factor as a pro. The Sony is like a toy.
One could always use something like the "Varavon Multifinder Uni Universal LCD ViewFinder" as a kludgy workaround to the optical view finder. Or wait another ten years for Canon to come out with an electronic viewfinder and a global shutter on the 1DX XX XXX XXXXX.
By the way, your note about it not shooting 16fps optically with AF mostly depends on wether you have AF priority, rather than drive priority & other things like ISO, auto lighting optimiser & noise reduction. So, you probably can actually shoot 16fps with AF, in the right conditions.
Overall, I am very impressed by the 1DX Mark III specifications, and I look forward to seeing how it handles the world. The new video options are enticing and befitting of a $6500 camera. The new battery life ratings on the same batteries from the 1DX Mark II seem almost too good to be true. One of the fair disappointments that I think deserves to be leveled at the 1DX is the lack of a resolution increase. 24 MP was really where I think the standard for these sorts of cameras ought to be. The gigabit ethernet could also have used an upgrade to maybe 4 Gbps since this camera has boasted gigabit ethernet for 3 generations now. Conspicuously missing is the hybrid viewfinder given how much this camera is unleashed in live view mode.
they didn't raised the MP in order to avoid self canibalization to the R and RS cameras, although it was more than plausible to have a camera with more MP for them. Also it is useful for photographist working live and it is also more suitable for multiples shots (around 40-50 pics in a row)
this is prob just me but the cameras being out of focus on the table in front of you is kind of distracting to me. Same with the monitor in front of you. Anyone else? either way, thanks for the great vids tony!
5.5k is not slightly bigger but much bigger than 4k almost twice the size of 4k (8k is 4 times the size of 4k), and i think the crop in 4k60 is 1.3x not 1.5x
I just wanted to ask you to have a recent uploads section on your home page. The home page doesn't show this now and I have to go to the videos page to find out what the latest is. Also, the "best to watch first" is probably unnecessary as it never changes and for most of your subscribers it is probably of no interest anymore. Better to put it in a playlist. Thanks for the show.
Dual Pixel Autofocus is not inherently slow. This will be the first high speed camera with DPAF. Do you think it is responsible to make the claim it will be slow in such absolute terms without having even touched the camera?

best explanation of the 1dmkIII on youtube so far. Always quality on this channel - thanks!
I think tilting screen and IBIS would compromise the overall bullet proof ruggedness of the brick action pros have come to expect from these line of cameras?
typical remark. the pros also said that mirrorless cameras would never amount to anything.
Pros said the digital cameras are bullshit and film is better
True no IBIS, but if you read the documentation ... it's got EBIS ... o.O
The 1DX is first and foremost a stills camera. On the other hand, just "stills" won't cut it in today's market.
Thanks for pointing out the limitations on reviewers who receive pre-production models; that's an important distinction which purchasers should keep in mind -- particularly when evaluating a $6500 purchase.
Gee Tony, why don't you ever mention that the 20fps of the Sony is in compressed raw. Ie., lower image quality.

I am not a pro but I see many youtubers saying that pros don't shoot in live view, agreed. But pros use tripod or monopods and I don't see a reason why on a monopod or a tripod live view can't be used when the situation demands. Btw Thanks for the review Tony.
I shoot via the screen. Why wouldn't you rather than lay on the ground.
I'll use live view on occasion with the a9 but only when I have to (like some basketball player is wayyy close and I can't be blind but I still want the shot)
But the thing is about the mirrorless cameras is they have that sensor that detects your eye, so taking my eye off and looking at the viewfinder is nothing, it's just instant switch back and forth. With the 1dx it's going to be a menu setting or button or something, no one needs that hassle.
Matt M I agree live view is very nice to use on mirrorless... on dslr you lose time so you ended using it only in some critical situations

Don't worry, you're saving your back, arms and hands while having the ability to shoot the same quality stills and video from other cameras.
You don't "hold the camera " out in front of you. You have it mounted to a tripod to use the 20fps.
The time for these DSLR cameras is over in a few years, and in four years for the next Olympics we will look back with a smile on our lips when we think of this dinosaur!
photons my friend photons. EVF will get close but never as fast to get image to the brain as an OVF. this is how dinosaurs think.

Colin Carter that is correct. He obviously didn’t use the camera.

subwarpspeed by Canon of course.
Love the thorough review and comment at the end. Never knew about the conflict. Great video!
Tony if you keep growing that beard I am going to start writing my future comments under your videos in Chinese.
1D X Mark II already has a integrated GPS module.
That's what I was thinking. It's the inbuilt Wi-Fi that's the great addition.
Nope. Simply fix a Optical loupe to the back of the screen, and voila ! Instant EVF. I have done this with several cameras and it works a treat.
@@nordic5490 The optical loop is for critical focus using manual lenses, not an EVF replacement.
@@nordic5490 That's rather less ostentatious, though certainly a more practical work-around.

Great for my bank account to see an expensive camera I have zero interest in. I don't need speed, just more megapixels.
Then don't waste your time on the review and write snarky comments.

This is a really good review! As a Sony shooter, I want to see some real competition and this should provide that. My only complaint is that in demonstrating live view you keep using a lens with a short focal length. Trying to chimp the back screen with a 500mm f/4 might be a really interesting demo of a significant problem.
I'm sure most peeps using a 500 will have a monopod, so no issues
@@AcidicDelusion Interesting, I didn't know the monopod comes with and EVF.

Hello Tony,
Any thoughts on high ISO performance between 1DX Makii vs Mkiii?
Suppose to be 1/2 to 1 stop better than 1DX2
Pro level EF lens usually have image stabilization already so EBIS makes sense and EBIS is in the documentation.

I think the 16fps may be a little more than theoretical...
From the Canon white paper:
"One specific improvement in AF system speed is that the rate of separate AF detections during AI Servo AF shooting is significantly faster in the Mark III camera. In other words,
in the brief fraction of a second between shots at up to 16 fps, when the mirror is in its down
position, the AF system performs more sampling operations, more separate AF readings."
But taking more separate AF readings does NOT speed AF up, it increases the accuracy.
The lens focusing system must also be capable to keep up, only the latest offerings have any chance of obtaining 16 FPS.

Since this camera is aimed towards wildlife, journalism, and sports photography. It seems that everyone has an opinion, but I've yet to see one from a professional sports photographer. So I'm hoping your "funny" comment has some real insight as a sports photographer.
The advantages of this camera over the Sony mirrorless counterparts are obvious (listed in order or importance):
- a built-in GPS chip (in My opinion, its most important strength)
- S-raw, M-raw
- Heif codec
- Illuminated buttons
- Unlimited cache (but the cards cost an arm and a leg at this point)
- Some video features missing in the Sonies
- Direct compatibility with somewhat more affordable, but still quality EF lenses.
But (much as I want a GPS in Sony mirrorless bodies, support for S-raw, M-raw, XS-raw, as well as Heif), the Sonies (both the Sonies handily beat the Canon on most counts):
- Much smaller and lighter
- Mirrorless (i.e., an electronic viewfinder, no redundant parts (such as a mirror and a pentaprism) in there, etc.)
- Quite a bit more affordable (though still rather expensive) than the ridiculously expensive pro-grade Canons.
So use a mono pod!

And it’s not exactly the first time.
moo , no.
moo , exactly, I’m not the confused one.
Great stuff, Tony, thanks muchly.
Until Canon has linear lens motors, Canon's camera bodies' focus speeds will be limited by their lenses. They'll always lag behind Sony until they fix this and manufacture faster lenses.
Don't mind me. I'm only here because of camera conspiracies...
Can it take pictures? Not interested in a video camera, when looking at a photo camera...
let me get this straight... it's awkward to shoot while holding your camera out and pros don't do it... yet it would be nice if there was a tilting screen because otherwise when your camera is low you have to get low?!
and you just assume that the DPAF won't be able to keep up, yet they show a train (with no real edges) coming head on to advertise the 20fps in live view... further testing required....
i'll admit, this camera is out of my price range and frankly not made for me to shoot my dogs running around in my yard, but bro, you gotta be consistent with what you want/claim a feature is for.
also, you should've probably put 10/20 fps for the sony
Sheesh... haven't you seen sports photogs and journalists shooting over the heads of crowds?
At last something worthy (?) to shoot my dog with. Thanks Tony. I was worried that my dog would never get to see those awesome photos!
All the focus points are still in middle, one of the main reasons why I switched to Sony mirrorless but this video explains the new camera nicely!

Bruno Lazaro lets just forget the fact that in 4K/5.5k @ 24, 25, 30fps has AF. Nope let’s just cling to something negative.

I do.
Or wait another ten years for Canon to come out with an electronic viewfinder and a global shutter on the 1DX XX XXX XXXXX.
just watch larry chen with that beast for 5 days / no need more
By the way, your note about it not shooting 16fps optically with AF mostly depends on wether you have AF priority, rather than drive priority & other things like ISO, auto lighting optimiser & noise reduction. So, you probably can actually shoot 16fps with AF, in the right conditions.
"You'd need an extremely talented colourist..."
Yeah, like when people use raw files in lightroom :/
Couldn't possibly figure this out in resolve...
Swear lol
Wow! That last section about reviews! Thanks for the honesty!
Just buy a viewfinder for the rear screen. You don’t have to hold it at arms length.
5.5k is not slightly bigger but much bigger than 4k almost twice the size of 4k (8k is 4 times the size of 4k), and i think the crop in 4k60 is 1.3x not 1.5x
I am really hoping that "some" of this great tech carries into the EOS-R mark II.
This camera is insane
No, the Cyclops Contarex was insane in its time. This one seems merely insanely expensive, but there will be a market for it.

Dual Pixel Autofocus is not inherently slow. This will be the first high speed camera with DPAF. Do you think it is responsible to make the claim it will be slow in such absolute terms without having even touched the camera?
It's only slow in comparison to the phase detect focusing using the mirror.
Hwirt Wirt only in cameras released so far, none of which have prioritized high speed af and shooting with dpaf.

Can you attach M6 mk ii viewfinder to it and turn it into a 20FPS mirrorless? Then it’s basically an A9.
I think Sony’s answer is coming soon: The A9S
Not before the Olympics? I believe
Hi Tony, if the extra $2k was spent towards a GM lens is that a better deal for me to get the a9ii?
