Hi Chris, from what others have said (using the OVF focusing) - if you place an AF point on your subject to begin with, it locks on and won't let go, wherever that subject moves (as long as the subject remains within the AF points, obviously). I'm wondering if you're not used DSLR focusing systems any more, because in honesty, I can get better focusing results from an 80D than you showed with the 1DXiii and they're world's apart in focusing abilities. I shoot tons of bursts of joggers and cyclists and I don't get out of focus shots and sometimes they even momentarily disappear behind an object, but 8 have the camera set up to pause for a moment if the subject is lost. I bet you'll get great results once you have more time with the camera. Gordon Laing had no issues with the AF keeping up with formula 1 cars. The normal DSLR AF was far better at tracking fast moving cars than the DPAF.

@@peterebel7899 Sorry for the long reply but I'm trying to cover the bases as to why it's not really much of a benefit to have in camera usb charging in camera's like the 1DX due to the capacity of the batteries. Still requires a port capable of delivering 20V for 20V negotiation. This means that you cant just plug into any old usb port and have it work. A lot of phones have a USB-C data and charging, yet those still plug into usb type A chargers limited to 5V. You won't be able to use a phone charger with USB type C to charge your battery., still requires a separate charger. Sure it can be done with a type C wall charger designed for 20V (but isn't the point to get away from the wall), but it will require special power banks built to deliver 20V and not what most people are carrying around with them which are 5V. For comparison a 20V 4000Mah (@20V) 80WH battery pack is 600-650g and larger than most dual battery dual voltage (wall and car) chargers. You can plug a car charger into a solar panel, but for the 1DX battery you'd probably want a 12W panel per battery @1A (3 hour charge) or a 6W panel for 500ma (5-6 hour charge) making sure that the panel can output the correct voltage (20V regulated down), but that's more stuff to carry and those wattages even folded aren't pocket size. If you have to plug into the wall, then USB in camera charging is only a convenience for people who don't change their batteries (and don't carry spares) which is outside of the target market for this camera. The USB-C charge units are all the size of a 90W power brick (go figure?), just go look at the usb-c 60-100W chargers for size comparisons. USB type C charging doesn't solve the problem that the convenience of USB charging eliminates, which is the need to bring a wall socket charger unit when you're travelling. The solution for that is the ubiquitous 12V car charging units and swapping your batteries as required. Just plugging into your macbook and draining its battery power will leave your macbook without much left. The canon 1DX battery is 2700mah (30WH) and the macbook pro's battery is 100WH, doing the conversion you could maybe charge a battery three times theoretically (with perfect conversion) but realistically after 1 charge your macbook pro's battery will be down to 50% and you'll soon be looking for that wall to plug into. If you look at the current USB charging camera's their batteries are at biggest 7.2V (8.4) and 1025mah , converting to watt hours that's roughly 7.4WH or about 1/4 the capacity of the 2700Mah 10.8V 29.16WH 1DX battery most are half that (3.6V 1050mah 3.8WH) Oh and just for laughs, 20000Mah 20V power banks for your laptop, can't fully charge your selected laptop (100WH) as the 20000Mah is rated at 3.6V which gives you a total capacity of 72WH or 3600Mah@20V, which is 3/4 of that 16" macbook pro's capacity. Oh and for those paying attention, we can regulate the 20V output of those power banks to suit a 12V car charger and some of those chargers self regulate from 12-24V input. There's no ideal solution for usb charging such large capacity batteries away from the wall and at the wall the battery chargers are no bigger than what a USB charger would need to be.

Chris, HEIF does not necessarily mean the images are HDR. It's just an image format like any other but with better image compression and support for animation. You don't need special displays to view these files. HDR displays are meant for HDR video, which is a different standard entirely with different EOTF. It's not meant for images and images don't support this standard. This was wrong and misleading when you guys said it in the iPhone video and it is still wrong and misleading. The iPhone captures wider dynamic range by image stacking and the files are still standard dynamic range but using tone mapping to compress all the visual data into an SDR file. To Canon's credit, they are actually using the higher compression afforded by HEIF to increase bit depth to 10-bit and also capture wider dynamic range but these still aren't HDR. HDR is a video standard only.
If you display HEIF files on an HDR display (that is programmed to accept the file type), you will see additional highlight that an SDR cannot display. Sure, you can view HEIF files on an SDR display, and edit some of the highlight information back into the final image, but if you just shoot and playback on a compatible device, you will get an image with greater than SDR dynamic range. Also known as HDR.
@@thatjordandrake I just went through the whitepaper released by Canon for the camera and they indeed mention that the HEIF images from this camera use an HDR PQ for encoding the files with higher dynamic range that specifically require an HDR display to view, so I was wrong about that. I still don't think HEIF files from the iPhone do this, however.

If you look at the current USB charging camera's their batteries are at biggest 7.2V (8.4) and 1025mah , converting to watt hours that's roughly 7.4WH or about 1/4 the capacity of the 2700Mah 10.8V 29.16WH 1DX battery most are half that (3.6V 1050mah 3.8WH)
Oh and just for laughs, 20000Mah 20V power banks for your laptop, can't fully charge your selected laptop (100WH) as the 20000Mah is rated at 3.6V which gives you a total capacity of 72WH or 3600Mah@20V, which is 3/4 of that 16" macbook pro's capacity.
@@magottyk Sorry, I even do not read all your words to the very end.
- Buy an iPhone 11PRO, you get the 18W USB-C power adapter. Plug in Canon EOS R, the camera is fast charging the battery. I do it on a regular basis.
- Buy any MacBook/Macbook PRO, you get a much more powerful USB power adapter. Plug in Canon EOS R, the camera is fast charging the battery. I do it on a regular basis.
- Buy an iPad, you get ....
I have all those Battery chargers all around, small, light, cheap. ALWAYS. EVERYWHERE
Questions?
@@magottyk BTW:
This is the miss of a huge selling point:
With USB-C charging I would be able to travel around with one additional mirrorless body instead of the charger (size, weight).
I think I will continue using the 1DXMII workhorse.
@@peterebel7899
You're using a wall charger, the canon usb charger is also a wall charger.
Both those chargers are 5V or 9V and do not do 20V.
These are custom jobs using USB type C plug @ 9V to fast charge a 7.2V (8.4V) battery at fast charge rates.
9V is not official USB type C spec, you could not charge a laptop with those, even slowly.
Neither could charge up the 10.8V (12.6) 1DX battery.
The battery in the EOS-R (LP-E6N) is 1850Mah @ 7.2V or 14WH or half the capacity of the 1DX Battery (LP-E19).
The size of the USB charger is similar to that of the battery charger.
Chris, you explain things very well. Thank you :-)
I appreciate that!
I used to have 1dmk2 some 10-15 years ago and quite a number of L lenses..... nowadays I've settled for smallish fuji xt20...but damn...my heart still tremble like the 1st time looking at 1d body... it's big, heavy and all those thing....but it's all about shooting the best photo....
outstanding video - first time i've heard anyone talking about the real improvements through the OVF (- most seemed focused on the EVF....er.. Live View changes... which isn't too important for my needs, though. So, that for being honest about the 1DX3 being improved in the OVF, but not big improvements - and that the strongest improvements are in the EVF.
I ll just keep commenting this wherever I can. Mirrorless and advancements are great. An OVF is the only place we see the image as is. I can barely afford the 7D now and I am saving up to get bigger on my kit. Hope DSLRs remain.
Same megapixels? ugh...so still shooters still need to wait for high mpixels!!. When is the next camera supposed to be announced out of the 4 to be released?
Don't need much more than 20 for sports. Plus less megapixels means larger actual pixels which means better low light / high iso performance thus better in badly lit or the need for high shutter speeds
@@neovo903 Ya...sorry, no $6499 going out for a few trick pony camera. Its beautiful, but not for me. If I got it free, I would have to sell it, and buy another camera. I do some light sports, not mainstream boring sports for franchises..
I'm guessing sensor and processor from this is gonna become a EOS RH.
Question: Couldn't the Smart Controller inadvertently move your focus point when you use back button focus?
Why not using BPG instead of HEIF? BPG produce a lot smaller file than HEIF.
I love this channel. Such great presenters, lovely places to test the cameras, nice bit of humour here and there, a very friendly feel to the videos, up to date and comprehensive, concise information. You really have ticked just about every box for producing interesting and well presented videos. I think you need to give all of yourselves a big pat on the back and buy each other a beer!!
Idon't know why I am watching this
I still using my canon 1200D💔
Great review guys! I can't wait to get my hands on it!
Plz canon mke eos rp mk2...and put those bsi cmos sensor for good shadow details in low light and also no crop on 4k with c log and lastly a good fps speed..thats all i need...i dnt wnna switch to other brand...
No USB-C charging on a new camera for 2020 is disappointing, especially on a pro camera like this.
Wow. Battery life is phenomenal. USB charging is a non-issue for me.
It's not a MILC, did you have a look at the battery ??
a downer ? yeah, disappointing ? that may be a little bit too much.
Canon claims this camera has twice the battery life of the 1DX2 and will shoot 2800 stills per charge. Pretty awesome.
@@djack41 I already shot 10.000 stills in a special event with one battery and not running out of power (1DXMII)
Great times today, focus on shooting, not power or storage.
Interesting to see what Sony and Nikon answer with their A9II and D6!
beast of a camera with a beast of a price tag
is it mirrorless. sucks when i have to review photos in bright sunlight and cannot see the screen. so it's mirrorless..looks at pics via EVF..right.
The AF button sounds like the old Blackberry trackpad (which replaced the rollerball).
I paid $284 for a 1 gig Lexar CF card back in 2003 so buying a 64gig CFexpress card for $150 seems to me a very good bargain. Nice review.
5d5 coming soon?
How long will it take before HEIF files be compatible across all devices? HEIF files will have to be converted to jpeg after editing.
Soso Melodies 12 years
this looks great..now i am more confused which one to buy, the M50 or this.. :(
For real? 😄
Great idea with the af on button, if that can be sensitivity adjusted it could be excellent.
I agree. But I could also see some missed shots accidentally changing focus point until you get used to it.
Thank for the video. charging via usb is a risk. electronic surge can kill a camera board.
Anybody knows how viewfinder and live view is recorded here and in other camera review channels? Is it another camera with Macro or any close focusing lens?
Battery is 10.8v I believe, USB ports are normally output 5v.....
What about the dynamic range!?
Is there [FACE ONLY] mode for autofocus in video like in the C200?
No mention of a comparison to the A9 huh?
This is a preview with a pre-production unit, so it's not fair to start doing comparisons. Stay tuned for our full review.
When Canon will dump that mirror?
Did you edit your footage for this video
It looks amazing
Nice to see Liam making an appearance , that boy is a star in the making watch out guys :-}
waiting for the EOS Rs!
Let me see your Rs!
LORDY - waving that thing around from the deck without a camera strap.
That opening scene was priceless
Looks like a great camera. I am hoping that by the time a Mk iv 1dx comes out I will be able to afford a Mk ii. This camera will have to wait a few years after that! Meanwhile, I wonder when a 5d Mk v is coming out and what it will be looking like?
Heo DDPReview, How did you manage to get a sample version of this camera.
Oh boi, I can’t wait to see this camera at the 2020 olympics
Is it a 20 megapixel because we're in 2020?
My thoughts exactly...
No it's for low light iso
This will be the best hybrid camera of all time
20MP? Are we back in the 90s?
No one cares about high megapixel, but if you do,. That means your amateur,.
Oh yes of course. Only amateurs care for megapixels. And IBIS. And Eye-AF.
Those are only for those who don't know how to shoot.
Don't need much more than 20 for sports. Plus less megapixels means larger actual pixels which means better low light / high iso performance thus better in badly lit or the need for high shutter speeds.
Don't need an insane amount of megapixels anyway.
Finally they have released a new 1dx. Cant wait for the new eos R
To summarize, though Chris would have trouble saying it, beats anything Nikon has now or on the horizon.
Ok so I have watched a few of these video's on the 1DX Mk3....what strikes me is that why don't they have a hotshoe EVF like the M6 Mk2 that it uses so that you get all the benefits of live view focus but with a viewfinder.....I cant' believe I am the only one thinking this surely? Nobody buying a 1DX is going to be using it for on-camera flash unless you have more money than sense and a rank amateur! Either way, the masses who buy this are serious sports photographers and videographers and when was the last time you saw one of them with a flash? Oh actually I do remember, it was 1997 when they we still using rolls of film that took a maximum of 36 shots before you needed to reload! Love those days....!
£6500 in UK... sorry but the 1dx2 was dam dam good, cant see many non-agency shooters upgrading, im sure they will place orders for 200 or more but the price is crazy and the smart money will be waiting or moving sony A9II....just saying..

Any news on DPAF in 4K?
Nitecore does a double charger that can charge this battery through USB
Yeah but it'd be nice if it supported charging through USB while the battery is in the camera.
Very is mirrorless era ? :)
Does it record or exit to SSD disc?

Is that possible that fujifilm xt3 get the new format by updating new firmware?
Theoretically
That's what historically Fujifilm has been doing but I guess we'll only know when it actually happens.
It's possible, but not likely. The SoCs in cameras have a dedicated silicon for jpg compression. I'd assume the DIGIC X has similar, but for HEIF.
Did I see 4K 60 Raw on the internal video list?
Yeah it have 4k 60fps raw video, clog and normal mode

Estudio de larts no one cares about Nikon anymore
Canon already has QPAF patented, the DPAF isn't bad but it's not cross type and QPAF should be there when Canon makes the ultimate mirrorless body.
