We didn't mention it in the video, but it's worth pointing out that this has the 1080p 120p slow motion mode with no crop & full AF, same as the 1dx II had, but it is now 10 bit 4.2.2 HEVC All-I at 470Mbps Carl

Speaking of video auto-focus capabilities can you put the 1DX Mark III on a tripod with face tracking enabled then hit record ,walk around in front of the camera and the auto focus track you or must you first select what you want tracked with the touch screen? That would largely determine whether it is a good camera to use without a camera person (or additional monitor) since you can't see the rear screen from in front of the camera.
Absolutely! They have said they are working on a pro mirrorless camera to sit above the EOS R, so it will be very interesting to see what features from this they bring to that camera Carl
@@LoverOfTech Sony would have to make the A7sIII MUCH larger physically than the A7s II to get anywhere close to the capability of this. Will be very interesting to see what they do. Carl

Thanks Carl for answering the crop factor in 4K 60fps mode with AF still on! I saw some reviews say it was 1.5x instead of 1.27x, and I was wondering why that number was different than the 1Dx II. However, I am stoked it's only 1.27x to match my lenses on the mark II!
Canon saw Blackmagic 12bit raw and said, "Well, guess we have to flex our mussels." Don't know if canon can produce the same dynamic range and recording time as the blackmagic, but its auto focus and battery life sure make it a big competitor in my opinion.
Record Time probably not also keep in mind there is a 30 min record limit on this camera. But remember with raw, depending on the NLE you use, you can access other log profiles (like c-log2 and clog3) which can offer greater dynamic range if the sensor can handle it. A good indication will be how good the stills DR will be
Jered Harris yeah but you then have to buy battery alternatives cages 2 external monitors focus pulls. There’s a lot of external features to make the 6ks viable options much more than the 1DX mark iii. This is coming from a pocket 6K owner.
For the first time in a long, long time Canon exceeded expectations. Was not expecting 12-bit RAW. The media costs for shooting RAW are going to be insane though, you only get 4 minutes per 64GB at 5.5K-24/30, and a 128GB CFExpress costs $200. Edit: apparently it will output RAW through HDMI so wont be too bad in terms of storage costs.
okay... Q: so you use the new mouse to move the focus point - you cannot then simply press the button like an regular AF-On / Backbutton focus? I assumed you could tell the camera to use all focus points selected to start tracking in Auto... this is what you do w/ the 1DX2. You move the joystick to move your focus point to a selected point, press it in Auto, and that's where it starts tracking. Can you no longer do this because of the new AF-On mouse implementation? thanks m
great video! just wanna clarify, in raw recording, u will have af at full frame up to 30p in all resolutions and also, u will get af at 60p in crop mode is that right? it seems like a crazy video camera that also takes great pictures. haha
thank you for explaining the video modes and frame rate/dual AF limitations. much clearer. when the menu item shows 4k-D, is that signifying c -log mode?
Maxim Horoshilov Canon has been known to reach for those 14-15 stops. Real world seems to be around 12 with the EOS R (4K 10-bit 422) but we’ll see with the 1Dx3.
Great vid! After watching it, I’m trying to decide between 1DX Mk3 and R5. I most shoot photos and not much video. I usually shoot events, so very dark places and people moving fast. Two questions: 1. Is the AF so good that you don’t feel the need for focus assist options? 2. Any info on audio recording features and quality, for professional video use?
boroc7 I forget which reviewer said it but they noted that the noise floor was significantly lower. That being said, I’m not sure if Canon use better preamps, recorded with increased bit depth, or both.
thanks for sharing , very detailed and clear. just wanna know hos 1080 deal , like video compression method? quality ? is anyway to bypass the no audio recording like using external Ninja + audio input ? this 1080 120p no audio really sucks
@ProAV TV first of all, I would really like to thank you for making this video, I was looking to know more about the video Features of this camera and finally I got the answer, but I have 1 question and until know I'm still so convulsion .... If you have the choice to choose between this camera and canon C300 for video thing as a video production, which one you gonna choose? I hope to answer me because this is a really important decision in my life thanks in advance
I currently own an 80D and I'm ready to jump to a professional camera. I mainly work as a videographer (I do photography as well), would you recommend getting the 1DX MKIII or wait to see what Canon adds no the next EOS R?
Your number 1 question should be. Do you really want to keep the dslr form factor? Maybe an Ursa mini pro is better suited for someone who mainly does videography.
Thanks Carl. What i was thinking is for a small production company - what might be the best 1080p IQ camera now - 1dx2, 1dx3, c100-2 or c200. (weddings, interviews, birthdays). I want to move away from 4k, almost no one from my clients, for now, even thinks about it.
Question for ProTV: I'm wondering if there is a 1080p @ 60 fps that is full frame and includes full auto focus? Thanks for an excellent review and the video capabilities of this cam. Thank you.
I heard that the RAW capabilities aren’t what people think, like it’s not true RAW like you would get with the C200. You can adjust the white balance and different things in post. Also I heard that the Canon Log they have within this camera is more like the Canon Log in the Canon EOS R, and not the C200. Its a new raw format, the camera isn't even released yet. It's to early to know what software companies will be able to do with it. I'm sure they will increase support in time. Carl
It's a slightly different implementation of the raw codec, so we will have to wait and see really. But interestingly the 1DX III is 12 bit in both 30/25p and 60/50p wheras the C200 drops to 10 bit in 60/50p Carl
Canon had a very interesting odyssey when talking about recording media. Going from CF to SD, C-Fast and now CFexpress in less than 7 years So if I upgrade from my C100 to C200... I have to upgrade media, and now... If I'll chose 1DX... I'll have to go with CFexpress. How expensive is this transition? However, from the filmmakers point of view, Sony seems to make better hybrid cameras. It would be nice if 1DX had at least one mini XLR for audio. This looks like a beast. Would you say that at the same price point of the Canon C200 you will get better images out of this? Also is this going to subclass the C200 if one doesn't want to shoot raw, since it has the 10 bit 422 files?
Potentially, it would be interesting to put them side by side. there’s lots more going on than just image quality though, they are completely different ergonomics Carl
@@ProAVTV Yeah the ergonomics is a "big down" for DSLR type cameras, that is why i was asking primarily for image quality. If the C200 would have the 10 bit codec i wouldn't really care about the 5.5K and care relatively little about the sensor size, but that full sensor + 10 bit non raw + 5.5K + that price... it all surely makes it quite interesting despite the ergonomics. I truly hope that when this camera becomes available you will indeed make some comparison with the C200 and, why not, with the C500 as well. Thanks for the great contents as usual.
According to Canon's website : "RAW video at 5.5K (12-bit) can be recorded right onto the CFexpress card, or to external recorders via HDMI, at up to 60p"
@@timelapsega Thanks! That prompted me to look for myself and it does state 4K60p output in 4:2:2, 10-bit! Shaping up to be an awesome B-Cam for the C500Mk2!
If they can give us UHD 4k 60p with AF (and 1.5 crop, that's fine) then I'm interested. Only DCI 4k 60p cropped for AF just isn't gonna cut it for me with that price tag. Not trying to go crop and recompose each slow motion shot to have af.
Thanks for focusing on the video specs. I'm assuming there is a legal or technical reason you can't show us any footage. Looking forward to seeing some raw that has been heavily graded.
The reason we haven't shown any footage from the camera is that we only had a few hours with it to make this video so didn't really have the time to shoot anything with it really. Once we get our hands back on it we'll be sure to share some footage. Dan
If any one is thinking of getting it for video primarily, I think you are better off getting a c200 as it's almost in the same price range and a dedicated video camera with better video capabilities.. For hybrid shooters, it's pretty sick 🤙. But its still a dslr, if only Canon could aplly this technology in a mirrorless camera, it would have changed the game.
Yes your right, for lots of work the C200 would be a better choice. It's what it is designed for after all. But the size and weather sealing of the 1DX will mean for some work it is the best choice out there. Plus the stills side of the camera of course. Carl
You didnt mention the screen. Because you got no evf, you have to use that. I think this makes this camera not good for handheld work, because holding it in front of your face, makes it really unstable. With my gh5 i was really impressed hot good it is for those qick, statik b roll shots, where i don´t find me using a tripod anymore.
First of all congratulations for the nice job you 're doing! I am curious if Canon mentioned (or if you asked them) if there is a possibility to include dual pixel autofocus in 4K 60P in a future firmware update, or this is not an option at all for this processor -or for not effecting an cinema line sales-. Also the same question goes for the lack of sound recording in 120fps FHD mode.
I doubt it on the AF in 4K 60p. If canon could do that they would have included it out of the box. They rarely bring big new features like that in firmware. Not sure about the 120p sound recording though. Carl
@@ProAVTV To be honest it was my thought either. Still though, it is a great camera. Looking forward for you to take it on the field! Thank you once again.
Why would anyone need more than 29 minutes at a time? I use cameras for video all the time, and the longest shots I take are at the most ten minutes before I cut and set up the next shot.
Sony a9ii is better for some things, and this better for others. A9ii is way lighter and much more future proof - this canon is likely to be one of their last dslr’s they make. Pretty much.
Lol what for? You do know that 1DX Mark III has Eye AF working ONLY while looking at LCD lol? Also AF doesn't work in 4K 60P and 5.5K Video. The AF Point are all in the Centre again, so NO 93+% of Frame coverage by the AF like in A9 II. Talking about video, all the samples are very Unsharp and completely suck in details comparing to any other 4K shooting camera. No tilting screen, no sound recording in 120P, and in practice it will be not 16fps with mechanical shutter, but more of 12, like it was with 1DX Mark II. So no, these is another Old Huge DSLR , that only wins in Drops Test , Faster Cards and Higher Price.
sony is not heavy sony is not bulky sony has better lenses and they not heavy too sony is cheaper than this bulky one but Canon second hand cameras more than sony cameras value and that's make me so angry because sony give shit about own costumer !
@@ProAVTV I was more thinking image quality than form factor. This has true 24p, internal raw, resolution above 4k and full frame 4k 60, while I believe the fx9 has none of these. And at a much lower price. With a free sports camera built in. That's not a small or insignificant list.
I was hoping it would be better than the Panasonic s1H, but the specs are so far behind Panasonic I cant justify the extra cost. The 1Dx3 i's not even Netflix compatible.
I would have loved it if they removed all the photo features, replaced them with built in ND's and dual xlr ports, and then called it a C100 mkiii... Still, this does seems impressive.
If you didn't have that touch bar on Eos R, you would not have got this AF-On touch pad thing. That's how technology evolves. You have to go through the bad before getting to the good part.
@@pinakijana9479 I don't agree with your comment. The good part is that Canon has already had the joystick AF for all their past high end cameras. It has worked flawlessly and people loved it, but yet they decided to put a touch pad on the R that does what... change AF, customized buttons, change photos. It does nothing to help the user to take a photo.

Potentially, it would be interesting to put them side by side. there’s lots more going on than just image quality though, they are completely different ergonomics
Carl
@@ProAVTV Yeah the ergonomics is a "big down" for DSLR type cameras, that is why i was asking primarily for image quality.
If the C200 would have the 10 bit codec i wouldn't really care about the 5.5K and care relatively little about the sensor size, but that full sensor + 10 bit non raw + 5.5K + that price... it all surely makes it quite interesting despite the ergonomics.
I truly hope that when this camera becomes available you will indeed make some comparison with the C200 and, why not, with the C500 as well.
Thanks for the great contents as usual.
Can you record 4K 10bit to both cards simultaneously, or is it just a proxy while RAW recording?
Wow, I used to hate on Canon but this one is a beast. Sony A7S3 better be good and come fast otherwise I might switch back to Canon
Is there any definite information about the resolution and frame rate of the HDMI output?
According to Canon's website : "RAW video at 5.5K (12-bit) can be recorded right onto the CFexpress card, or to external recorders via HDMI, at up to 60p"
@@timelapsega Thanks! That prompted me to look for myself and it does state 4K60p output in 4:2:2, 10-bit!
Shaping up to be an awesome B-Cam for the C500Mk2!
Can you shoot video through the viewfinder? Or is it liveview only?
No, as it is a DSLR the view finder won’t work in video mode.
Carl
@@ProAVTV Yeah, that was what I thought. Thanks.
Thanks for the useful informations
Thanks for watching!
Carl
How are the assists? Audio meters, waveform, peaking, punch in while recording?
There is peaking and audio meters. No waveform or punch in while recording though
Carl
ProAV TV ouch.
The HEVC is H.265 correct?
Yes it is.
Dan
Can you record 4K 60p in crop mode with DPAF? If so, what is the bit rate?
Yes you can.
Yes you can in MP4.
Bit rate is 1000 Mbps for All-I & 340Mbps for IPB
Carl
If they can give us UHD 4k 60p with AF (and 1.5 crop, that's fine) then I'm interested. Only DCI 4k 60p cropped for AF just isn't gonna cut it for me with that price tag. Not trying to go crop and recompose each slow motion shot to have af.
Does this camera shoot UHD uncropped at a 23.98 frame rate?
It does indeed.
Dan
Great Review!
Thanks!
Carl
Question: What is the Ethernet port used for?
Most likely for remote control for broadcast work or live-streaming
Thanks for focusing on the video specs. I'm assuming there is a legal or technical reason you can't show us any footage. Looking forward to seeing some raw that has been heavily graded.
The reason we haven't shown any footage from the camera is that we only had a few hours with it to make this video so didn't really have the time to shoot anything with it really. Once we get our hands back on it we'll be sure to share some footage.
Dan
I am professional cat photographer since 2003. Is this camera OK with cat photography?
Yes, this would be more than capable of cat photography
Carl
Did you try the digital IS?
A little, it’s the same system as the eos r and c500II
Carl
@@ProAVTV Thanks for that, that will make a big difference - keep up the good work.
Dynamic range?
It's improved, but we don't know by how much
This is WOW! I wish to bag this one haha 🤗😅🥰
Wow Canon! Really did it this time!
No autofocus for video?
Yes there is. It’s canons full Dual Pixel AF system like on their cinema EOS cameras
Carl
is it 15+ dr?
They didn't state the dynamic range i'm afraid.
Carl
@@ProAVTV thanks Carl. Will we have footage test soon?
Hopefully
Carl
I can see adding a monitor on top of this,my back hurts just thinking about it.
Why would anyone need more than 29 minutes at a time? I use cameras for video all the time, and the longest shots I take are at the most ten minutes before I cut and set up the next shot.
This vs c200, where would you go?
A minute of silence for those who recently bought a Sony A9ii.
no need too, this is $2000 more expensive
So no, these is another Old Huge DSLR , that only wins in Drops Test , Faster Cards and Higher Price.
sony is not heavy
sony is not bulky
sony has better lenses and they not heavy too
sony is cheaper than this bulky one
but Canon second hand cameras more than sony cameras value
and that's make me so angry because sony give shit about own costumer !
This feels like a bit of a stomach punch to the fx9 outside of broadcast.
Yes and no, its hard to compare cameras with a video style of ergonomics and ones with a DSLR form factor.
Carl
@@ProAVTV I was more thinking image quality than form factor. This has true 24p, internal raw, resolution above 4k and full frame 4k 60, while I believe the fx9 has none of these. And at a much lower price. With a free sports camera built in. That's not a small or insignificant list.
@@GBftw
💯
12 bit internal but 10 bit extrenal ? shame ... again new CF version :( why not usb C ? to external SSD like blackmagic...
I was hoping it would be better than the Panasonic s1H, but the specs are so far behind Panasonic I cant justify the extra cost. The 1Dx3 i's not even Netflix compatible.
Netflix certification takes some time, they have to test it and this camera isn't even released yet.
Carl
@@ProAVTV if you go to Netflix website it's listed as approved already.
Very informative. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!

indeed
I would have loved it if they removed all the photo features, replaced them with built in ND's and dual xlr ports, and then called it a C100 mkiii... Still, this does seems impressive.
I need to find some old sugar mommas in nyc that need some company. If you know any send them my way please, will travel. Not kidding either
Fred right! Gotta get this $6,500 some way
😍😍😍😍
So no 8k?
That AF joystick should of came with the Eos R...
@@auomauom Are you talking about the traditional Joystick or the new AF-On touch pad of the 1dx iii?
@@pinakijana9479 the traditional joystick.
CFExpress 1700m/s read and 1200m/s write
Why even take pictures on this? Just record 60 fps raw and take snapshots from that :)

It's a shame they don't have an option for a hybrid EVF. Looking off that back screen is going to get old, fast.
