I own a 1DX MK II and I got it almost exactly a year ago. I actually just wanted to watch the first minute of the Video, because there are plenty of reviews on RUclips about it. Yet, almost 20mins later I finished the Video and I am stunned. This is probably one of the most interesting and well made Camera Reviews I have seen to Date! Inspirational! Thank you Sir!
Hey Eugen, thanks so much, best comment yet. Hopefully I can get another out soon. How are you finding the 1DX? It's an awesome camera but I'm growing tired of it now so i'm excited for the Mark III
Hey, I’m looking to purchase a 1DXMII, would you say it’s a great time or should I wait for next year when it’s anticipated cannon will announce its 1DX MII successor?
I'm a bit late to the party however I've just bought a 1dx mk ii now! I was used to using the 80D for video beforehand! However your points in both pros and cons I completely agree with! You covered so many valid points and opened my eyes to some points I've not previously thought of! I'm struggling to believe how your channel is not larger cause your content is great!
A cinematic beauty! A masterpiece of brevity, smarts, depth, and thoroughness. A culturally relevant short film made for an iconic camera: brilliant! Bravo to you sir.
I got the camera I bought it brand-newJust curious I watch this review after using the camera nearly a year this is one of the best reviews ever I have ever Watched thank you bro
One of the best reviews on youtube. Thorough explanation with well timed examples, rather than 1 hour of a person sitting there and giving an opinion with no evidence.
a great in-depth review... I have owned 3 1dx mark 2 cameras since the past 8 years now... and I have never failed to stop loving it for the only reason that I love Canon's Color science and how it never fails to deliver what I ever desired to get in my output. Straight out of the box, it creates wonders... Canon has never disappointed me... Thanks to your video as well which makes me believe it even more 🙂
Very informative. With accompanying music. Not too loud, not too soft and not annoying RAP music. Which it seems has to accompany videos these days. Thank You.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but I find it extremely satisfying how your eyes never seemed to frantically flicker back and forth between the actual shot and a "non-existing" script in the background, as so many other reviewers seem to do quite frequently. Absolutely outstanding and beautiful review, the 1DX MKII is definitely showing its age nowadays and it sadly makes me want to wait for the MKIII or 5D MKV.
Thanks so much! I guess the b-roll helps hide some of those eye movements but yeah my goal was to try and talk directly down the lens and for the most part, I think it worked.
1DXII owner as well. Crazy that I sat through the entire video anyways! Great video. Very in depth and well executed. Addresses everything that bothers me about this camera.
173 subs are you shitting me? everyone is right in the comments that was a really good watch and a genuinely spot on review, I really hope this kicks off it definitely deserves it! I feel a bit naive saying I think the 120fps looks outstanding, it seems like the dynamic range is a hell of a lot better than most of the other frame rates, for sure it looks unbelievably soft at times, so much so that it's like it's applying some weird smartphone style beauty filter to the image, it also has that bizzare switch that allows you to close the viewfinder, i'm not sure if I missed you saying that in the video if not that seemed pretty different when I was figuring everything out!
Hey, thanks so much, comments like this will keep me doing it. Haha Well It's early days I suppose right? I'm just getting started. The 120P does look great compared to other cameras but if you compare the DR & sharpness to some cinema cameras you might then see the different. The 1DC with CLOG was a little closer but still nothing compared to the C200 or C300. But yeah the 120P may have more DR than the other frame rates but it's a little too soft for my taste. And that switch you're on about is for long exposures, I forgot to mention it in the review but you would use it to stop light leaking in for a really long exposure. Star trails for example. It might help a little for light leaks in video but it's more of a photo feature.
@@VideoCameron First, great review! Second, I have a 7D and a 7Dii. With the intro of the 1DxIII, I'm considering a used 1Dxii. When you referred to better alternatives out there , was that before the context of the 1Dxii price drop?
How in the actual fuck don’t you have more subscribers! Keep it up man this is the BEST review I’ve ever seen; most reviews I find are super boring. This was a great one!
Yes, agree - mostly. I've been shooting with this camera for a few years now. While some might call the 4k "soft," I prefer it to other DSLR/Mirrorless 4k video which is "sharper" but distinctly more "video like." The 1dx2 4k is quite cinematic in my opinion and, as you mention, can take a fair bit of pushing around in post. The 1080p, as far as I'm concerned, is the biggest drawback of this camera. It's really awful. I sometimes output to a ninja 2 if someone really wants to acquire in HD, but the files are still nothing more than acceptable. In all this time the Canon 1dx2 hasn't skipped a beat. It's got to be one of the most reliable and solid cameras out there. (Touch wood.) And it shoots really nice stills as well! I recently also acquired a Fuji X-T3. The 4k files are also really nice, sharper, but not too video like. It's been quite a learning curve for me to handle such a small camera. Everything's there - but significantly downsized. It feels more like a toy compared to the Canon. However, as I get used to it, the Fuji will be my choice for a quick "run and gun." And, while newer single-handed gimbals are able to handle the weight of the 1dx2, the package gets heavy, VERY heavy - for me anyway. With the Fuji, it's a breeze. I think the biggest downside of all these hybrid cameras are their codecs (this seems to be improving though) and their lack of dynamic range. But this is to be expected as they are essentially stills cameras. Again, in my opinion, one can only appreciate how important dynamic range is after you shoot with a dedicated cinema camera. Thanks for a great post!
Yeah the 1080 isn't great and yes you're right the codecs are awful. If the 1080 was as sharp as the 4K or the 4K wasn't a bitch to edit, I would be happy. Yes the camera is super reliable and I do still love it but i'm ready for something new. Considering that Sony are apparently about to release a full frame 8K camera (or something close) I think Canon really need to step up their game on their next release, otherwise I can see them not being relevant anymore in the pro video game at all.
Just viewed this, in 2024!, as it's now in a very affordable second hand market and your review has been the best I could find. I'm simply wanting to do surf videography in the water, very close range, too close sometimes 🤕 and zero use for flip screens, sound recording etc. At $2K Aus , it's hard to justify newer better options when my use is isolated to one environment ?
Thanks for answering all my questions!! I currently own a 5D Mark IV for making youtube videos, and of course stills. I can see that your experience with the 1DX is similar to my experience with the latest 5D. Pretty good, but sometimes I am a bit choked by the performance, given where this camera is supposed to compete. How is it that not even their flagship camera is gripe-free? I'm a bit surprised actually. I don't have much an issue with the large file sizes, which seems to be a big pain point for some, but the 17:9 aspect in 4K is a bit annoying since it makes it one extra step to mix footage. It's odd to me that in a camera that is designed in a way that would make you want to use the different frame rates and resolutions, that they punish you a little for doing so. I watched your video out of lust for more from my Mark IV, yet it seems not even spending double my previous investment would solve my issues anyways. Three extra thousand bucks for 120 frames in a Canon? I may as well just buy a Sony.... sadly.
Yeah I suppose Canon know what they can get away with. The Sony cameras are awesome but you have to give them a try to figure out if they're for you. They also have their issues, believe me
@@VideoCameron I've only used Canon..Sony glass looks to be super pricey which is scaring me away from Sony. Have you used a Canon 5d Mkiv? Any thoughts on that vs the A7 series? I shoot both photo and video.
@@jcatt5016 Gotcha, well the 5D4 is a great camera but I would only be looking at it if you're going to utilise it for stills, as that's it best feature. the 30+MP looks amazing. It's no different to the 1DX without the 120p & 4K 1.3 crop. It does have clog though, which is great,
Hey Cam, thanks for a brilliant review mate - my main stills camera took a rather hard fall last week and I have been shopping for a replacement. I have been thinking the EOS-R will be a better fit for my hybrid style and to intercut with my C100s but it took your review to take a second hand 1DXMII off the table. Cheers!
I just bought one for £1310 from an ebay auction in great condition. Thanks for this video. I didn't know about the CF anf Cfast cards not being the same thing!
@@VideoCameron Turns out not really. Faulty shutter speed dial. Other buttons were a bit worn out and sensor was filthy. "Excellent condition" my a$$. I sent it back. I didn't like it anyway. Way too heavy and bulky. I've decided to order an R7 for the same money (when they are available).
Spot on with the crazy expensive wifi adapter and the setup every time to use it is a huge pain, totally agree. Canon could easily update the firmware to fix so many issues.
finally, a review that isn't by some jumped up hyper child that is more concerned with themselves than the actual review. Hats of to you sir! A tremendous cinematic review. Top Marks!
Nicely done, no idea where you came from but youtube has recommended this to me (not in the market for - or googling any canon gear these days) I watched the whole thing, which, i think you know is a high-five to you and what you made. Who knows, if you ever get into gear reviews, this channel could Bloom..
Hey Alex, thanks so much for the comment. I've be watching youtube for years so I thought it was time to get involved. I have a few more video planned so keep an eye out. And was that a Phillip Bloom Pun? ha
Video Cameron I love it. I stepped up from a 5dm3 so it was a big leap in terms of features. I do wish canon would innovate faster or not handicap their top of the line DSLR. Other than that I just need more time on the camera. That’s why I appreciate your review.
@@jarrellpeak3705 Yeah it's annoying right? They're my favourite camera system going but their technology is a little behind. Let's hope the 1DX Mark III is the camera we all want.
Well done. I love the camera and look forward to buying it as a second camera. I have a 1DX that I use primarily for stills.. and will continue to do so.. and will use the Mark II as the Video camera. The Mark III looks and is incredible.. but it will also push down the price of the Mark II
Thank you very much! It's still a great very capable camera. I think unless you're moving into pro pro level video + a little photography here and there the MK2 is fine. Canon cameras hold their value pretty well, so I doubt we'll see the MK2 below like £2000 for a good few years for example but i'm sure it will make it slightly more affordable used
Thanks very much! ^ that's exactly what I intended. I think 1K subs makes sense considering i've only really made 1 real pro video. The 1DX is also quite a niche camera, so as I make more, hopefully I get more!
Refreshing review. I've been in the habit of setting videos to 1.5 speed & skipping through parts, for the sake of time. However, it felt right to slow down to listen in without any modification. Calming tone and great information. Thanks.
First I am a very amatuer cinematogapher. I just ordered the 1dx mark II for $324 less my 60D trade I net ou at $104. I am hoping that I can use Magic Lantern plug in in it because that will give me the intervalometer. Great review
Great no nonsense review. However I take issue with the comment about the WFT-E8, once I am set up for a specific device I never have to re-enter the password. You only have to do that if you create a new Ad-Hoc network each time you use it, if you save your settings under any of the SET options just launch that SET and connect your device to the camera and it's done. I have one SET in memory for my phone, one for my iPad, one for my studio network when my computer will automatically detect a connected camera and launch EOS Utility etc etc. The WFT-E8 does give you way more than basic WiFi functionality with features as powerful as being able to send images via FTP to any connected device worldwide (though I suspect few users actually need that!) though I won't argue about the complexity or the price!
private bydesign interesting, do you use the Canon app or only through the browser? I haven’t tried the browser options yet at all. Maybe that might solve my issues I’m having?
@@VideoCameron On my phone I only use the Canon Camera Connect App, on the iPad I use the Connect App and the WFT Server function via a web browser depending on what I am trying to do. On a computer I use EOS Utility or the WFT Server function. I did once set it up for FTP transfers but don't have an internet connected server I want to do that too regularly. I also have a CamRanger and for some tasks I just find it easier with more appropriate controls (time-lapse, much greater multiple exposure controls, focus stacking etc etc) but it isn't weather sealed or a robust solution in any way. I am primarily a stills shooting generalist.
@@privatebydesign1808 Interesting, perhaps I need to give some of the other features ago. Is there a firmware update for the WFT adapter perhaps? I did look at the Cam Ranger but It doesn't look like the solution for what I need. And yes I have peripherals too, especially third party peripherals.
Definitely a nice video. As a Canon shooter, I was one considering this camera. However, honestly, it’s outdated. But it’s interesting to see, how much effort Canon puts into sponsoring videos with the intention to keep their products alive (i.e. to refinance them). I am looking forward to seeing a pro mirrorless body finally.
To be honest i'm still learning, I don't use vectorscopes, any third party plug-ins or anything other than the basics of the lumetri Colour panel. I just use my eyes & play around with the colours. Canon footage is by far the easiest to grade
Your review is probably the best one out there. I’m watching it after having pre ordered a Mark III. And almost everything you mention as a con in this camera that needs fixing is a Check for Mark III. Now I’m even more excited about it hehe. Looking forward to your MIII review.

Cheers!
the EOS R is probably a more sensible camera yes!
I just bought one for £1310 from an ebay auction in great condition. Thanks for this video. I didn't know about the CF anf Cfast cards not being the same thing!
Good price
@@VideoCameron Turns out not really. Faulty shutter speed dial. Other buttons were a bit worn out and sensor was filthy. "Excellent condition" my a$$. I sent it back. I didn't like it anyway. Way too heavy and bulky. I've decided to order an R7 for the same money (when they are available).
Spot on with the crazy expensive wifi adapter and the setup every time to use it is a huge pain, totally agree. Canon could easily update the firmware to fix so many issues.
It should be better right? Let's hope we get a firmware improvement soon
finally, a review that isn't by some jumped up hyper child that is more concerned with themselves than the actual review. Hats of to you sir! A tremendous cinematic review. Top Marks!
Chris Pacitti thanks so much! Exactly my intentions, this is a video about the camera not a marketing video for myself or my skills 😂
Incredible video!, The best camera review I have ever seen!.
You should make reviews and tutorials, you're channel will blow up!.
Hey! thank you so much. I promise to keep at it!
Nicely done, no idea where you came from but youtube has recommended this to me (not in the market for - or googling any canon gear these days)
I watched the whole thing, which, i think you know is a high-five to you and what you made.
Who knows, if you ever get into gear reviews, this channel could Bloom..
Hey Alex, thanks so much for the comment. I've be watching youtube for years so I thought it was time to get involved. I have a few more video planned so keep an eye out. And was that a Phillip Bloom Pun? ha
This is the best camera review I've seen. Great job.
Hey! Thanks so much. Subscribe for more reviews!
Love the review & dead pan delivery, you sold me on it then turned me off it with the no clog and other downsides. Cheers anyway
Probably the only review ive seen where someone actually likes the size and weight of the 1DXMII. thats what im saying. Who wants small and plasticey?
Yeah It's perfect for me. I always used to add grips to other DSLR's so the 1D is perfect.
Great edit and a music chosen. I'm deeply thinking about GREATEST life questions that touch me instead of focusing on specs!!! Well done...!!!
HAHA Love it, thanks for watching
Awesome review. I have used the 1dx for just over a week. I like it a lot and I appreciate your insights.
Thanks Jarrell! How are you finding it? Just checked out your channel, great content!
This is a well made in-depth review! It covered quite a few things I was wondering about and things I had not considered. Thank you!
Awwh thanks for the comment!
excellent video and a lot of good info, i wait for mark iii version with c log and better bit rate output
Thanks for the comment. Yeah lets hope that happens
Canon cameras hold their value pretty well, so I doubt we'll see the MK2 below like £2000 for a good few years for example but i'm sure it will make it slightly more affordable used
It`s like fairy tail in terms of sound and like a real movie in terms of picture, best review i ever seen, bravo !
Thank you very much for the comment!
Love this video of yours dude, from content to it's quality 💯
domenick amiana thanks so much!
You should have had waaaaaaaaay more than just 1k followers. Great content, sufficient info depicted in a cinematic way. Keep it up brother!
Thanks very much! ^ that's exactly what I intended. I think 1K subs makes sense considering i've only really made 1 real pro video. The 1DX is also quite a niche camera, so as I make more, hopefully I get more!
@@VideoCameron I am looking forward to upcoming contents, specially the EOS R.
Could you post an update video of towards the end of 2019 and looking toward the future?
As of right now nothing has changed!
Man this is friggin great. So clean, crazy helpful, and very much you.
Thanks so much Kyle! I appreciate the kind words. I'd love to see you review the A7III.
Yes I really love that look 💪🏼
Refreshing review. I've been in the habit of setting videos to 1.5 speed & skipping through parts, for the sake of time. However, it felt right to slow down to listen in without any modification. Calming tone and great information.
Thanks.
Thanks!!
First I am a very amatuer cinematogapher. I just ordered the 1dx mark II for $324 less my 60D trade I net ou at $104. I am hoping that I can use Magic Lantern plug in in it because that will give me the intervalometer. Great review
Are you talking about the 5DMKII? Magic Lantern isn't available for the 1D sadly
Probably the best camera review on youtube 👏🏻
Greg thanks so much!!
Excellent review - very helpful - thanks
Very welcome
Great review.
Greetings from Tokyo 🗼
Thanks!
Can I ask which camera and lens you used for shooting the review? Amazing video!
Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 - Best affordable lens going!
@@VideoCameron thank you for your reply, did you shoot the review (footage of the 1dx on table, etc) with another 1dx or a different camera?
Kevin Thomson the interview is the A7III
This review just saved me $5500. You rock.
You're welcome. Decided it's not for you eh?
I own this camera and your review is truly excellent.
Thank you.
Thanks so much! It's a great camera right? I'm looking forward the MKIII
I guess it depends what you need. But yes, you're right. Hopefully the 1DRX or whatever they call it gets Canon back in the game!
How did learn to colour grade? It looks beautiful!
To be honest i'm still learning, I don't use vectorscopes, any third party plug-ins or anything other than the basics of the lumetri Colour panel. I just use my eyes & play around with the colours. Canon footage is by far the easiest to grade
Video Cameron please may we see a quick process? Tbh I’m finding it really difficult to grade my 5D II footage. Thank you!
Li Eric are you using Magic Lantern?
Video Cameron no I’m not. Should I be?
@@E-bk9vk For the 5DII yes, you can film raw video. Then it's just like grading raw images.
Your review is probably the best one out there. I’m watching it after having pre ordered a Mark III. And almost everything you mention as a con in this camera that needs fixing is a Check for Mark III. Now I’m even more excited about it hehe. Looking forward to your MIII review.
Thank you very much, yes I’m also excited for the MK3! Hopefully I can get it soon and do another review
One of the best review.
Awesome review dude, really nicely shot too. appreciate the effort you put into this man it came out great.
Dillon Osborne thanks so much, I was scared people would get bored as it’s quite long to be fair there’s s
a lot to talk about
Video Cameron naaa dude it’s the nature of those kinda videos. People who want the info to help make a purchase or thode interested in gear will watch that stuff 👊🏻
Great vid man. Loved it
Matt Stephen thanks so much!
Same here 👍🏻
incredible work
Kabir thank you so much!!
@@VideoCameron you are gonna grow sooo much if you continue releasing this kind of content :)
Amazing view and lovely British accent..well done.
thank you mate!
Really really good review mate, love the style of it!
James Seneviratne Thanks!
Masterful, thank you for this.
Old Hollywood Briar very welcome
Very great video. As a sony a7iii user, the file sizes are killer for me.
Thanks so much! Yeah you're right, the codecs are so outdated!
@@VideoCameron im recording almost 40-60 minutes 4k videos for my channel "Jonasz Olszewski", as i counted how much space would that require with this Canon, i smh haha
Best review i ever hear in this listen way 👏👏👏👏
thanks!
I’m your 500th subscriber!! Much love from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦😍🤠💯
Wooooo! Thanks for the sub & comment!
Ryland from Citizen with the quick cameo
Good eye! Indeed that was Citizen
This was beautifully done, when I watched this two years ago, and had aged well in 2021!
I must ask, are you still using this camera?
Thank you! I’m now using the Canon R5 and soon to be the Canon R3
Smashed this review dude! Well done fella!
NorthSouthTravels thanks mate!
Thats the first full 20 minute video i sat through without jumping forward in along time 👏👏👏 well done and thank you! Subbed
