- Visit to the grave of Sergei Rachmanonoff, one of the greatest Russian composers all time, buried in Kensico Cemetery. It is located Valhalla, Westchester County, New York.

My grandmother was a simple, uneducated woman from the Tennessee mountains. She asked me to teach her about classical music. When I played Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 for her she began to cry and cry. I held her hand and we both sat there crying, because Rachmaninoff's music overwhelmed us with its beauty. We both then vowed that we would visit Russia one day to see the place that inspired this wonderful man.
Sergey, this was a delightful video!! I realize you did not know this, but Rachmaninoff holds a special, and personal, place in our hearts, especially for his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. That piece always reminds me how much I love Beverly. Even I did not realize he was buried so nearby. One day we must make the trip there. Thanks so much for sharing this. All the best my friend. Fantastic video ! spoken from the heart and its great you celebrate a fellow countryman whose creative genius has left such a mark on so many. Piano concert No.2 in c minor to me is simply the greatest piece of music ever written. One day I will travel from country Australia to sit and listen to the concerto by his grave.
Love this video, Sergey. Once again you have impressed me with your wisdom and passion for cultural treasures. We had a very old collection of classical music LPs when I was a child, and I loved them all- Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky were among them. Thanks for remembering them!

I love that people perhaps unfamiliar with Rachmananoff (or any other of the composers mentioned) can discover his great work for the first time thanks to videos such as yours, and perhaps discover an appreciation for classical music as well.
I know what you're talking about... I wish I can't de-hear all Rachmanonoff, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and to listen them all like for the first time again!

There's such a rich tapestry of music from all those named Russian composers. My favorite is Tchaikovsky, who was a master at capturing emotions onto paper in the form of musical notes -- LOVE his Symphony #6!
Wonderful! Thank you for this. I also hope that when people see this video that they will become curious about Rachmaninoff's music...as well as all classical music. Many years ago when I was a kid a movie and it's director turned me on to classical music....2001 A Space Odyssey. Many of Stanley Kubrick's films featured classical music and that marriage of great music with great filmmaking made me instantly hooked. Also, the work of Keith Emerson (Emerson Lake and Palmer and The Nice) where he mixed classical with prog-rock kept me even more interested. Since then I've kept my ears wide open for new music.

Yes, the musical style of ELP is great. So far, their arrangements of music by Prokofiev ("The Enemy God Dances With The Black Spirits") and Mussorgsky ("Pictures at an Exhibition") sound amazing.

He already knows more than most. I live in New Jersey, 10 miles from Manhattan. The man who lives across the street has lived his entire life in the New York City area and he is proud that he's never been to the top of the Empire State Building or to the Statue of Liberty or to an art museum, etc. He may as well live in Shitz Creek, Arkansas.

Well if you live your entire life in NYC you normally do not feel the urge of view more of NYC. You are more inclined to go elsewhere and see something new not the same thing you see everyday from a slightly different angle.

Thank you, Sergey! I share your feelings and admiration of Rachmaninoff’s music. I am not religious either, but if I ever had any inclination to have religious faith, it would be through music of Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff. The emotions are there.
How else but by miracle can you explain the music they created?

Sergey, that was a beautiful tribute. I've loved SR's music since my teenage years, and that beauty helped orient me to the Orthodox faith in Christ and His trampling down of death itself.
In 1989 I went to Leningrad to see the grave of Rachmaninoff. A newspaper here erroneously said Rachmaninoff was moved from New York to Alexander Nevsky cemetery in Leningrad. After searching for a long time at that cemetery I asked a бабушка where was Rachmaninoff? And she said he was not moved yet. Now I know that his family in America do not want his body moved. I can understand that. However, he absolutely had a Russian soul. His music was what made me want to see Russia.

If you ever get to see the movie “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve, it makes fabulous use of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
I just always assumed that Rachmaninoff was buried in Russia. Yes, cemeteries make us want to be better people. When we're gone we only leave memories in the living. Thank you Sergey.

Segey- You might be interested to know that many older people like myself were first introduced to Rachmaninoff thanks to our fondness for Marilyn Monroe! Back in the 1950's, she made a movie titled "The Seven Year Itch" which featured his music. Check out this classic american comedy.

For me, Prokofiev is the greatest Russian composer. Rach did some beautiful stuff such as his 2nd symphony, but my favourite piece of Russian music has to be Mussorgsky's 'Dawn on the Moscow River' from Khovanschina.

Nice video. Amazing that you walked from Valhalla train station. Across the road is another large cemetery that is a Jewish cemetery. Lots of our family are here..and husband and I have plots here too. I know you said you are Orthodox Christian. But in another of your blogs about public transportation, you were wearing a jacket that had Brightion on the back and Hebrew letters on one sleeve. I wondered if you had some friends who are Jewish.

Did you know that Rachmaninoff had such huge hands, he could stretch them wider than an octave? Most people can't play his music 100% the way he wrote it because their hands aren't large enough. I think I prefer Prokofiev to Rachmaninoff. I think it is more fiery and intense and less flashy. Rachmaninoff seems all over the place to me, like an abstract painting.
I think most Americans know Tchiakovsky from Swan Lake. That is a popular musical ballet at Christmas time.
Sergey---Rachmaninoff always thought Horowitz played his music the way he(rachmaninoff) originally thought of it in his mind.More than he could himself.

I think his body should have been returned to Russia. Yes, I know his history, but still. This type of cemetery seems a strange final resting place. But thank you for the video.

I think his fame is assured but most Americans want to go to pop rock concerts. You Russians produce so many great composers and others and then they have to leave due to political discrimination. They all paid a huge price to come to our nation. In Russia, many were lionized but here hardly known or remembered. The greatest gymnast who ever lived is now in Las Vegas and nearly forgotten. Had he been a basketball star dozens a day would visit his complex! Until some years ago he was a persona non gratis in his own nation of Belarus!

Rachmaninoff had desired to be buried at his estate in Switzerland but World War II was raging at the time, so this could not be. The alternative was Kensico Cemetery. I doubt that he would have wanted to be buried in Russia while it was still controlled by the communists. He was forced to flee into Finland with very few belongings during the Russian Revolution.
We are not religious either, we were always taught as long as a person accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and asked forgiveness of their sin. they will go to Heaven when they die. This is what the Bible says, which is good and true celebrating respectful holidays us good also. Good for you Sergey

Damn I love American cemeteries , our Russian(regular ones)look so stupid with all those fences, some graves are in bad condition others are somewhat kitchy and bad taste.
