FUEL Series 30 Min Full Body Workout - PHA Training | Day 4

  • Upper body, lower body, upper body and so on! We will welcome a longer duration between revisiting compound upper and lower body movements due to the formatting. A great way to promote being able to lift slightly heavier per exercise even though technically rest is on the shorter side.
    The timer will be on for supersets with the first exercise being 40 seconds, followed then by the next exercise for 30 seconds. We then have 20 seconds rest in-between each superset!
    We are alternating between upper body and lower body supersets so you will have come across this format during the EPIC Programs if you have completed some of those! The term is known as Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) and there are various ways of incorporating this technique into your training. I usually use it to allow for more volume due to alternating so essentially within this workout, we hit chest and triceps for 70 seconds, but we then have 3 minutes before we hit it again!
    I have always had a passion and interest for learning and taking research findings into consideration and applying elements into my training and daily life. I think that’s why I love variety... as nearly all formats, weights, timings, structure etc have a purpose and/or cause an adaptation. You will likely have experienced many training methods spanning the EPIC Programs and other series on this channel.
    For this workout, you will need some dumbbells, a mat, a chair or bench for Bulgarian lunges and a yoga block or stepper to elevate the heels for heel elevated squats.
    Of course, you can perform regular lunges as opposed to Bulgarian lunges or high squats as opposed to heel elevated if you prefer!
    Adapt this workout to suit you!
    Slow and steady with cardio even though not necessarily what you might always connect with the concept of cardio…there absolutely is cardio elements within lifting weights.
    We will finish with a flow that is the Maker, primarily an upper body but involves the entire body that will be combined with high squats to truly finish feeling worked but proud!
    The dumbbells I am using for your reference are 2 x 17.5kg and 2 x 10kg each.

    I think you will love this session! Mentally being aware that you rotate between upper and lower really will help motivate you to work that bit harder knowing that your legs will have a rest as upper body next!

    PHA it's a great workout for the cardiovascular system, because you go from the upper body to the lower body quickly.... In fact it is highly recommended for women who suffer from circulatory problems in the lower limbs... We talk about it only now but Caroline has been using this method for a long time.... Guys, we have such a resource with her!!!

      Interesting, I hadn't heard of PHA before, but I certainly know Caroline's workouts get my blood pumping and keep me warm on the coldest days😅

      I've just finished the workout and came to the comments to write that this is the best one so far. It got my blood pumping but at the same time I feel my muscles have been worked so well. I'm definitely going to do my research in th topic of PHA workout while having circulatory problems because in fact I suffer from it at a relatively young age. Thanks for bringing up this topic!

      Jillian Michaels memtioned PHA in a workout called Banish Fat Boost Metabolism more than a decade ago. Cathe Friedrich has several PHA workouts released over the last decade+. I mean, Caroline has definitely introduced it to a new audienxe, but it has been a popular fitness concept for a good many years.

      I LOVED it. I was a former triathlete and coach…and for about 3.5 years struggled with energy and motivation. Not just covid related. It wad environmental and hormonal. I was lucky to be able yo do 1 maybe 2 weight workouts a cycle…walking and gentle yoga were about all I could do. So Anywho…been back on track after figuring out those things, been consistently doing 2-4 with Caroline a week and seeing yummy progress. made most of this workout and took bigger breaks when I needed to. Thank you Caroline. These workouts are soooo fun, easy to follow and work!

    Caroline, I started your workouts around 2022. In October 2023 I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. After surgery I couldn’t wait to get back to your workouts. During chemo and radiation I tried my best to stick to your videos. I’m coming up on my one year anniversary and can just cry from how happy I am to be able to get back into it. Even with my inconsistency I’ve been able to get back into it and even increase my weights (just a little). I love how much my heart has to work to keep up. Thank you and God bless!!!❤❤❤❤

      Hi Amber...yes so very true...we learn so much from Caroline! I know we all appreciate so very much just how much research and planning she puts into each workout! I know this style of training from Caroline very well...but I hadn’t known in was called PHA! But isn’t it such a superb way to train...I love the way you can build such a cardio workout into a weights session by keeping the rest periods short! I really enjoyed today’s workout so much...and now I’m really looking forward to Fuel Friday Full Body days!! Hope you have a great workout and enjoy your weekend! Matthew

I always made Caroline's workouts my own by resting more than she does, because I felt I needed to, but my 'method'(or lack thereof)defeats the purpose then? At least the purpose of this particular programme?

      @@isabelleweiler5603 I think as long as you keep the rest relatively similar to Caroline, it’s ok! Maybe 30 secs instead of her 20 secs…. I would think (I’m saying this as a nurse tho and NOT a fitness expert!!) if you replaced all her 20 secs rests with 50-60 secs, you probably won’t get the same challenge on your heart- BUT, we are all at different fitness levels so that may be what some people need, even with a 50-60 secs rest, you are still moving your body and challenging your body so it is still a huge benefit!

    Caroline’s love of challenging workouts is so contagious! There’s something about the way she looks so happy even when she’s getting tired and struggling that makes me desperately want to do the workout myself! 😍😍
    Even before the FUEL series Caroline has utilised Peripheral Heart Action in her full body workouts, alternating between working the upper and lower body to increase the cardiovascular demand! I think it’s safe to say these workouts count as vigorous intensity activity! 💓😅

    I have completed Epic I, II & III. This is my favorite workout yet. I feel simply amazing !!! I have been exercising and living a very healthy lifestyle since in my early 20's. Married, have 2 kids, have a great job and at age 52 I am in the best physical and mental stage of my life - thanks to Caroline.... I have done many many different workout plans over the past 30 years and NO ONE comes close to Caroline.. God bless you and keep them coming!! Xoxox

    This one had me absolutely gasping for breath at the end -- even though each muscle group had solid rest time, the working time was so long, really taxed the system. Feeling super proud I pushed through (had zero motivation to work out today) -- drenched in sweat & feeling good!

      Iron is for hypertrophy not getting as sweaty as possible. It’s a totally different style of training and you really can’t compare the two.

    PHA = Peripheral heart action. Working the upper body then lower body - blood pumping from small to big muscles then reversed. Putting this here to remind myself what it is and to always know where I first learnt abt it. Building body and knowledge base with CG 💯

    This one was very sweaty and very challenging 😰 👍🏼 physically made me feel like I did an hour instead of 30 minutes, which means it’s one hell of a good workout!

    Good morning or good afternoon Caroline! It's been a while since I posted a comment! Closing on almost 2 years as a committed follower of your workouts! I've probably missed a couple of workouts here and there! but for the most part I completed all the series! I repeated some while on the road like CC and HIIT it Hard!! I repeated Heat almost twice: one live and the other fragmented on breaks! I love the no repeat series.. Short and sweet and can be incorporated anytime! I've been loving FUEL! I don't feel it is quite exhaustive.. I did like heat for the mix of cardio and strength and FUEL reminded me of that!..
    Whatever you do Caroline I am a fan! even if a move is not a favorite I still challenge my mind before my body to do it!
    I am enjoying the journey with all the lovely spirits here!. Thank you Caroline for always being present and pleasant!

      I don't really comment much on RUclips either but while doing Epic 1 I wanted to be able to interact with everyone but it's lonely there because the majority moved on.
      I was going to go straight into Epic 2 but my husband let me know this program just started so I am doing it because I like all the interacting here 😁
      I'll do Epic 2 once Fuel finishes though.. I want to try to do all her workouts!

    Let’s just take a moment to reflect on all the superb research that Caroline puts into planning her workouts! I’ve been excited to do the first full body workout of fuel series...and this just looks superb! I love doing supersets...and the choice of exercises looks so very good!       Morning, Matthew. I would give 100 thumbs up If I could! Sometimes I feel that other fitness trainers on online platforms are just putting together random list of exercises with 40 sec on and 20 off. But Caroline has so many different methods and she really put all her knowledge in this workouts.
      Today's session looks amazing, I unfortunatelly can't due it today but I can't wait for tomorrow to smash it.

    This was intense 😳 I used 20kg and 13kg DBs today. Certainly on my limit for this type of workout. The HR was definitely up peaked at 153. What I love is that I'm always challenged by these workouts and I challenge myself with my weight selection. I really appreciate what is produced daily for us and the effort that takes and after 2.5 years of solid gains I have nothing but repect for our mentor.

      Hi Renee...yes I didn’t know the term PHA...but I know the style of training from Caroline! I thought this session was superb! The point is you can keep the rest periods short even though you are doing weight training so the heart rate is really increased! I was very hot and sweaty by the end and I just loved it!       Hi Elise...yes I think we all needed an active rest day! I just went for a very enjoyable walk...so like you I was ready to hit this workout hard! It is really superb and I know you’ll love it!     Haha I’m technically staying up for Caroline’s new post!
    Subsequent note: Day 4 full body done. Listened to Caroline and upped the weights used to IRON series and managed not having to die 👍🏼💪🏼😅. I returned to use the IRON weights level since Day 3. Guess my body must have adjusted to the new mechanism of the FUEL series!

    Just discovered these workouts and they are fantastic. I have previously HATED lifting weights but, courtesy of Fuel and Epic (completed the whole course - brilliant), I think I'm a convert.     I've done many of Caroline's workouts but oh my god, this is by far the hardest workout I've completed ever! Towards the end I had to start taking longer breaks but managed to finish it. I feel very proud. ;-)

    Thanks for this workout Caroline. I really hope I would be able to lose some fat before August. I am doing these full body workouts almost every day, and I think I am eating properly since I got some meal plans from Next Level Diet. I even got some workout plans as a bonus. So far I have lost 12 lbs, and it is mostly fat as I can see.

    Hi Caroline!!! I am totally in love with fuel series. This type of work is what I love. Different to just lifting weights, in wich I have my roof (related to multiple factors) with fuel I feel like I can always give more, more reps, faster, deeper... and that's where the challenge is!!!     Happy Friday All! So, my first week of FUEL was pretty good. I’ve customized the workouts, BW/weighted vest on leg day, upper body +iron upper body, swim/bike on active rest day, and FUEL full body. I usually don’t workout on Sundays, but will be open. Can’t wait to see what CG has in store for us! Thanks CG!💪🏾🏋🏾

    So, I increased my weights today...really excited that I am getting stronger!       You sure will Peach. The heart will be elevated & the sweat a pumping 🥵🥵 is a challenging one with the second exercise elevating the heart. Finisher is cruel. Had to drop weights on last set of makers but you feel so proud & accomplished after it. Have fun & enjoy. Have a great weekend 😊

      @@annereidy515 Hi Anne...my experience was just like yours! Hot, sweaty fun! Yes wasn’t the finisher a tough one! I managed to keep going...but I was only using 8 kg weights as I don’t have 10 kg! Hope you have a great weekend...I’m off to watch some cricket today...England playing New Zealand at Lords in London! Last time I watched international cricket was in 2019 when I watched England play Ireland and for quite a lot of the match it looked as though Ireland would win! See you on Sunday! Matthew

    Woah. This is a new level of work from the Iron series, which is the only one I had previously done! My heart is definitely working hard, and my legs are shaking from all the reps and variety. Thanks for keeping things interesting and challenging CG!

    As always a comprehensive full body Friday! This looks simple but I'm sure those muscles will feel worked. I might go with 15 kgs and 8kgs and see how it works. Good luck everyone!
    Edit. Post workout. Such a fantastic workout! Alternating between upper and lower body gave some time for those muscle groups to recover. The short rest period definitely made it challenging. Once I got to about 30 percent I was out of breath 😅 absolutely loved it! Thank you Caroline!

    Miss Caroline, I am not sure where can I shout out my joys and happiness for my own little progress/training from all your videos almost 1 year now, [to be exact 1 month into 12 months]. To others, it is very slow progress or it's nothing, but to myself, it's huge joy, I don't aim for fast progress, I try enjoy the process. After 11 months training with u, I managed to do a proper bodyweight Bulgarian lunge. It has taken me 11 months, (never lift weight in my life, carrying 1kg weight when first saw your beautiful face on you tube, to now able to carry 2x5kg for normal lunges) . Why am I so grateful for u? It's because even though I suffer from arthritis, sciolisos, not able to even cut a single carrot, or carry grocery bag, now i can do a Bulgarian lunge, I felt great,and a conquerer. My next task is able to get a full push up, might take a year or more,as long as I can gain strength. I miss u, we all miss u. Thank you from my bottom of my heart. Whether you will return for us, or not, I am still be grateful for all the free videos, the tips, and information you provided for us. You have saved part of my life. Thank you Caroline.

    This session also was demanding! Sweat all over, especially during stretch even more! Finisher was no mercy, the makers made it super challenging- all the muscles at once.     Good morning everybody!
    Gotta be honest and say this was hard and I felt like giving up many times. Particularly during the renegade rows, Bulgarian lunges and the finisher. I was sweating buckets throughout.
    But when I made an effort to focus on the lifting, lifting through the legs, lifting with the arms rather than swinging the dumbbells, feeling the weight getting heavier etc. my feelings of doubts and quitting disappeared. I focused on the workout and I got through it way more easily. So perhaps you can try make an effort to really focus on the lifting when it's getting seriously hard, and who knows you will feel so accomplished afterwards!
    What an amazing week it has been so far. The fun continues Sunday :D
