I Tried Racing my Demon 170 Again and This Happened. So Frustrating!

  • In this installment, I return to the quarter mile track in my 2023 Dodge Demon 170 to try different launch techniques to get a better 60 foot out of the car and hopefully set a new PR. Unfortunately, I continue to run into the same issues as when I raced the Tesla Model S Plaid. This car is an absolute handful. Watch as I try different 3 different launch techniques and give you my final thoughts.

You need beadlocks. Tire is possibly spinning around on the wheel. All you have to do to test this, is put a mark on the rear tires and on the wheels (a line) on both the wheel and tire, and if the line separates, then the tire is spinning on the wheel.

I think it's time to go into the "launch torque setup" tab and start building out some custom launch parameters. Obviously preset A and B are too aggressive unless the prep is ideal. C is clearly too soft. I'd start building out something in between B and C where it's fully ramped in by 1.0-1.2 seconds or something. It's pretty cool you could build out settings for virtually any track condition so it will make a clean pass.

Test n Tunes allow street tires & that kills traction! Private rentals are the best besides an Event. I've been following quite a few of 170 owner's. All of them say the Torque management is very tricky to use. The amount of Torque at the launch is incredible & most have to take power out. Track Prep is a must to get these car's into the 1.2 60ft area. Knowledge is key & keep practicing & you'll get there. 💪🏼👍😉

@@RacerX9it’s got got plenty of power adding weight isn’t going to appreciably slow it down but the weight will settle down that rear axle to connect the power to dig and launch. Stick the seats back in and add some sand bag tubes right along the back of the seat in the trunk over the rear axle 💪💪

GM guy here.. Maybe reach out to Dodge & see if you can find out what PSI They were running their tires both front and back & what rpm they launched from.. We know track prep is also huge and besides, you're in hot humid florida ship the car to me 😁 I'm in Wisconsin I'll get that 8.9 quarter mile your seeking lol

Honestly before you do a 15" conversion, I'd consider different tire compounds. I know they come with Mikey SS's but that is more of a street radial then a drag tire.

I used to race superbikes (track racing). I have a 22' Challenger SP with minimal mods; currently I'm focusing on traction and handling - and I'm applying what learned with bikes and applying it to cars. I know, different worlds. To start - my suggestion is research tires - especially pertaining to the side wall/construction. That's A LOT of power you are putting down. When you are deflating, of course you are introducing more flex in the side walls (have to figure out what pressure works with whatever x,y,z, tire). Only my thoughts. God speed. Oh, one more thing - you might want to explore rear suspension tuning/config as well. Just remember your rear suspension tuning needs to correlate with your rear tire configuration - they have to work together. You probably know this stuff, only trying to help.

Thank you for the super chat my friend... I only saw the first one you sent and missed the second one. Yes tire pressure varies depending on prep as well and what type of prep. More VHT will typically allow you to run more pressure which means better trap speeds. Definitely still a work in progress but I am starting to dial it in. I appreciate your support buddy

Try launching at higher rpm ,just let leave ,let it transfer the weight then roll into it . Then figure out out much to let go before you can put down.
Just so much power without more suspension upgrades going to be hard to put it down all at once.

my et street R's in the same size 60ft the best at 15psi Hot. Dont be afraid to lower the pressure. the lower the psi the softer the sidewall is it will absorb the hit better and give a bigger contact patch.

@@RacerX9 The et street R has a special construction sidewall so it can run lower pressure. I had the same issue your having. My s550 has instant torque and hits super hard down low. Check Mickey Thompson website recommended pressure is 14-18psi. Start at 18psi hot and work your way down. These tires are very stable even at lower pressure. Good luck 👍

Well that's the age old problem, with high horsepower, high torque monster getting it to hook is always
the most difficult part. Better track conditions, better tire combination, and more seat time behind the
wheel, you will get better knowing what the car likes.

I brought the tire pressure up to 23, I am also running a drag radial, and BAM! With a drag radial you do not want to tire to wrap up, the car has to DEAD HOOK.

It all boils down to seat time, most people don't have the ability, time or funds to get hours of testing. The more runs you get,so you can learn the car itself and weather/track conditions doesn't happen overnight.
