  • Fox Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt is back after covering the NFL Draft from Detroit and starts the show by discussing the most surprising pick: the Falcons taking Michael Penix Jr with the 8th pick. He breaks down why Atlanta’s decision-making this offseason has put both Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr in a bad spot. Klatt also discusses the Giants’ decision to pass on J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings ultimately landing the Michigan QB. The Bears landed two elite talents in the Top 10 in Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze and look poised for a potential playoff run next season. The Broncos have received criticism for where they drafted Bo Nix but Klatt explains why they made the right choice. Finally, Joel discusses why the Cowboys could regret not drafting a Running Back and why Washington had a great draft selecting Illinois DT Jer’Zhan Newton and Michigan DB Mike Sainristil along with the 2nd overall pick in the Draft, LSU QB Jayden Daniels.

thank you for not sugar coating the falcons pick. Absolute horrid decision by the front office. Submarining the locker room is a great point especially because Penix is play now type of prospect I mean the dude is 24. I would understand it more if they went after a prospect like JJ McCarthy since he is so young and needs more time to develop. You gotta feel bad for kirk he will have a ton of pressure on him in practice and in games. No one should or can make it make sense. Sure if penix starts three years from now and they win a super bowl that's great, but that means they're kind of punting on this season when they could have bought all in on the defensive side of the ball and chased a ring this year. Maybe they still can if Bralen Trice ends up with 15 sacks but I highly doubt it.

    • @mawavoy
      @mawavoy 16 дней назад +1

If Kirk can’t take the pressure of competing against a rookie, you said needs more time to develop, then he should not be a starter! Atlanta needed a starting quarterback during free agency. They paid what the market required at the time. If a mistake was made it was not evaluating the draft possibilities enough. I wonder what the discussion would be if they pass on Cousins and draft McCarthy. There are always Monday morning quarterbacks.

The Falcons missed a huge part of the "Green Bay model," which is that the QB who's being succeeded has already established themselves in Green Bay for 10-15 years. Not a guy who hasn't even participated in a single practice for your team like Kirk Cousins with the Falcons. And a succession plan with a developmental guy taken in the 20s, not a guy who's ready to go, taken at #8 overall.

The only problem with the falcons is the 100 million dollar contract, that’s so stupid if they were just going to draft a QB. If Cousins goes 1-3 the fans are going to want to see Penix, so basically that 100 million will go down the drain unless Kirk plays well.

I'm a lifelong Falcons fan who has come to peace with the Michael Penix selection. When the selection was announced on Thursday night I HATED it. I wanted Atlanta to trade back and select a pass rusher. I'm still not completely sold on the Penix selection but I at least understand it, now.
Having to endure Marcus Mariotta and Desmond Ridder the last two seasons made it abundantly clear how important it is to have a top-tier quarterback if you want to be a SB contender. The Falcons have a strong enough roster that they shouldn't be picking in the top-10 for a while. I'd rather be early on selecting our next (potential) franchise quarterback than in a position where Kirk Cousins is washed up and we're picking 19th in a bad quarterback draft.
If Cousins plays awesome, Atlanta has a really good backup. If Kirk disappoints, they have a guy on the bench that could be their next QB for a decade. Had Atlanta taken a pass rusher with their first round pick they win, what, one extra game?
Again, I'm not completely sold on my own argument ☝️but I'm at least okay with it.

I'm also a Falcons fan and still hate the pick but, at this point, what are you going to do? What's done is done and you have to hope that Fontenot looks like a fricking genius in a few years.

A blind cat could’ve predicted Bo Nix to the Broncos. It just made so much sense. I agree on the value thing too. He was there guy. And he definitely wouldn’t have made it to round 2.

None of your points make sense. There's never a wrong time draft a franchise QB. He fell to them, yes they signed Kirk and even with that contract what are they missing that they can't build around him? They have elite RB/TEs and solid WRs with a defense that isn't terrible. Kirk puts them in playoff contention now, owner is happy, Pennix puts them in playoff contention for the next 10+years... You can never have too many skill players and yes that translates to QB. It's worked for GB for 30 years.. as a fan, if you were content with 36yr old Kirk with one achilles you should be elated for a 24yr old rookie for him to learn behind.

Penix to Atlanta was brilliant. The Saints were trying to move up to take Penix after just signing Carr, and they couldn't get him, so they settled for Rattler. Didn't the Saints pay Carr a ton of money? Who would you rather have Penix or Rattler? EXACTLY.

Im an Oregon fan so no love for Penix. But no denying his talent. He should be a day 1 starter. Or at worst, come in halfway through, possibly.

The trust they have in new DC Jimmy Lake speaks volumes. Coach Lakes’ new scheme alone will make the defense better in ATL. They are counting on it. You now have a quality back up QB to replace Cousins with if he’s injured or starts out 0-3. Also, you can now implement read option packages and rollouts, boots and option plays to keep defenses guessing.
If Kyle Pitts, Bijan Robinson and Drake London simultaneously get better this season, ATL will be in the NFC championship game.

Does it fit with signing Cousins? No,
But it was still a good move.
If Atlanta had a chance to win a Super Bowl, it's a bad move but they were not strong contenders, so good move.

I honestly don’t think anyone really wanted JJ besides the Vikings. Everyone was trying to trade up for Maye, not McCarthy at #3. And then other teams wanted Penix/Broncos wanted Nix. And Sean Payton and others already came out saying they wanted to Vikings to think they wanted JJ. And it worked.
But in reality, dude shouldn’t even have went in the first round. He’s the QB6 in the class, and closer to Spencer Rattler than the top 5.
