Kamari Lassiter is so underrated. He was either 1 or 2 in completion percentage amongst corner straight lock down in man to man and can play in the slot or outside the numbers
Zach Wilson’s arm is next level. He is a supremely gifted thrower. The bonehead mistakes are exactly why he’s a complete bust. “Watch the throws he makes!” What about all the throws he doesn’t make? Stroud didn’t make the same kinds of mistakes at OSU that Maye made at UNC. It’s a high risk high reward situation.
Maye is definitely the riskiest top 7 QB. If Daniels can't quite be an elite QB he's still an elite runner. Decision making is fantastic among McCarthy, Penix and Nix. Rattler has played in a pro style and his game vs Maye I thought he looked like the better player even getting sacked every play. Maybe is a project, he might work out or he might be Zach Wilson because his decision making can be rough to watch at times. Not as forgiving in the NFL as in college.
So what you're saying is that he needs Brian Daboll of the Giants. Just like Josh Allen who was pretty much the same prospect out of college. And he needed 3 years to grow and become the current Josh Allen.

I do think Maye will absolutely succeed in the NFL. He has the size and IQ. His weaknesses can be corrected. He is keeping himself out of the media so his stock is not rising like it should be. I do not think McCarthy is as valuable as recent media coverage says he is. He certainly will not have the time in the backfield in the NFL he had in college but, we will all see in 2-3 years how they have done.
I the don’t think it’s media making JJ it’s the NFL. They look at who his coach was in college and the system he played in. They also look at his age which he is younger then Maye and doesn’t make same mistakes and has good mechanics and footwork.
I love Klatt and this is one of the better big boards I've seen, but there are a few rankings that I strongly disagree with them being at least 12-15 spots off from where I have them: Too High- -JC Latham (I have him 40th, don't get the hype on him at all outside of the size) -Chop Robinson (36th, love the upside but no production and clearly a project) -Michael Penix (58th, good arm talent, don't love the processing, inability to throw from outside the pocket) -Tyler Guyton (44th, just not a ton of good tape and seems like a medium upside project) -Troy Franklin (67th, I'm simply wayy lower than consensus on his tape and I think his athleticism is slightly overestimated) -Zach Frazier (51st, good prospect but lower upside and he gets buried a bit by how much I love Barton and JPJ) -Xavier Worthy (49th, I'm scared he's too light and becomes just a faster Jalin Hyatt. The people who keep crying that their not sold on Drake May, don't understand the QB position, and don't know arm talent when they see it. Drake May was North Carolina. They wouldn't have done half of what they did without him. The mistakes Drake made were from the fact that he didn't have a great team, or elite receivers around him, so he was trying to do everything because he's competitive and wants to win. Had he, with that arm, had Washingtons receivers, or the Texas receivers, or the LSU receivers, then we would probably be talking about a Heisman and an all time great season for a QB. He has elite arm strength and accuracy, can make every throw, and can anticipate throws, throw to spots, and throw receivers open.

After ACTUALLY WATCHING DRAKE MAYE TAPE i can tell you this much - yes, you do occasionally (kinda rarely) see unbelievable throws, the kind that you rewind a few times and still can't believe. BUT the guy is missing like 30% of his check down throws(literally up to 10 yards), he stares down wide open receivers and doesn't throw the ball to them, almost half of his plays he's just watching his first read and waiting for him to get opened. If football was about having 5 tries to make an unbelievable throw, he would be the number 1 pick hands down, but it simply isn't. With all of that said, teaching a QB the "easy" stuff is after all possible, while teaching one how to throw a " 60 yard, running full speed sideways, off of one leg bomb" isn't.

See Joel your "just watch the tape" mantra doesn't move the needle in regards to Drake Maye. I can say the same thing about Penix. Are we forgetting the most important part of playing QB is between the ears? Pre snap movement and reads, post snap reads, moving through progressions at lightning speed, moving defenders with your eyes, freezing defenders in zone, looking off safeties, all things Penix does way better than CW, Maye, and anyone else. I don't care about the throws "he can make" when he misses 4-5 easy plays in between those great throws. Jay Cutler made some beautiful throws but that didn't make him a great QB. Maye looks like a scared deer in the pocket at times, is more hesitant than CW moving through progressions( which is saying a lot), and he drifts to his throwing side constantly creating his own pressure. He's very raw. If Washington takes him with a Kliff offense he'll bust in two years, I hate to say it. You and other analysts are right when you say, "we're overthinking it", but you're referencing it for the wrong player. Penix will be QB1 of this class sooner than later in the NFL because he's already playing QB at a high cerebral level. He's playing chess while these guys are playing checkers and he's gonna make a lot of teams look real stupid.

Maye's tape is what has made scouts and the draft community cool on him. If you just watch highlights yeah he's special. But in full games he has major red flags.
I was the biggest Joe Burrow stan I knew going into his draft, but I have Caleb with a higher grade earning the second best grade at QB I have given out since 2012. Chicago is going to be dangerous this year and a real contender 2025. They finally found a good QB.

The risk is even higher than with Zach Wilson. His mechanics are more inconsistent which leads to him missing easy layups

Really like the list. I’m super high on Ladd because of his ability to separate and his great hands. Hoping the chiefs don’t grab him at 32 or the league could be in trouble with him in Andy Reid’s system catching passes from Mahomes.

I love the list I respect you more then any other analyst out there but Joel I don’t understand all the love for jj McCarthy I really don’t I’m splitting hairs here but I don’t think he’s better then Bo or penix imo #14 for a guy we never really seen have to go win the game. He reminds me of the few Ohio state players that never had to either that got drafted high and never panned out. Still think he’s the number 6 but I’d easily drop him to 30 range imo love the show klatt much respect

I'm with Joel. Glad to hear some sense. Drake Maye is closer to Caleb Williams than he is to Jayden Daniels or any of the others.
After ACTUALLY WATCHING DRAKE MAYE TAPE i can tell you this much - yes, you do occasionally (kinda rarely) see unbelievable throws, the kind that you rewind a few times and still can't believe. BUT the guy is missing like 30% of his check down throws(literally up to 10 yards), he stares down wide open receivers and doesn't throw the ball to them, almost half of his plays he's just watching his first read and waiting for him to get opened. If football was about having 5 tries to make an unbelievable throw, he would be the number 1 pick hands down, but it simply isn't. With all of that said, teaching a QB the "easy" stuff is after all possible, while teaching one how to throw a " 60 yard, running full speed sideways, off of one leg bomb" isn't.
Love Joel but can’t get over the fact that we never talked about JJ all season being a day 1 pick… nevermind a top 10 pick… look at his stats against the top team she played…. Outside Alabama he never threw over 200 yards against ranked teams…

Drake Maye's ceiling is Daniel Jones and his floor is being a backup in XFL. Number 3 player in the draft is absolutely absurd. Klatt should be embarassed for that take.

See Joel your "just watch the tape" mantra doesn't move the needle in regards to Drake Maye. I can say the same thing about Penix. Are we forgetting the most important part of playing QB is between the ears? Pre snap movement and reads, post snap reads, moving through progressions at lightning speed, moving defenders with your eyes, freezing defenders in zone, looking off safeties, all things Penix does way better than CW, Maye, and anyone else. I don't care about the throws "he can make" when he misses 4-5 easy plays in between those great throws. Jay Cutler made some beautiful throws but that didn't make him a great QB. Maye looks like a scared deer in the pocket at times, is more hesitant than CW moving through progressions( which is saying a lot), and he drifts to his throwing side constantly creating his own pressure. He's very raw. If Washington takes him with a Kliff offense he'll bust in two years, I hate to say it. You and other analysts are right when you say, "we're overthinking it", but you're referencing it for the wrong player. Penix will be QB1 of this class sooner than later in the NFL because he's already playing QB at a high cerebral level. He's playing chess while these guys are playing checkers and he's gonna make a lot of teams look real stupid.
Joel Klatt glosses over all of Drake May's shortcomings. He is a 'coach killer' but you're trippin' if you think Penix is QB1 !!
@@samc231 explain how “I’m trippin”. That’s the point, is he glosses over some(not all) of Mayes shortcomings and it’s all excusable because he makes beautiful throws on tape? That’s crazy. Playing QB is soooo much more complex than making pretty highlight throws.

Maye's tape is what has made scouts and the draft community cool on him. If you just watch highlights yeah he's special. But in full games he has major red flags.

I was the biggest Joe Burrow stan I knew going into his draft, but I have Caleb with a higher grade earning the second best grade at QB I have given out since 2012. Chicago is going to be dangerous this year and a real contender 2025. They finally found a good QB.
