Is my Demon 170 faster than my Twin Turbo Mustang?

  • I compare my 2023 Dodge Demon 170 to my 2020 Hellion Twin Turbo Mustang GT to determine which is the faster car and which one is the quickest on the track. The Demon 170 is the quickest production car in the world from 0-60 but is it enough to take down the much smaller and lighter twin turbo Mustang GT?

The day to day satisfaction you get from the low end immediate torque when you drive the dodge is substantially more gratifying than the GT! On the street, between lights an short bursts on the highway the mopars are glorious. The mustang needs more road and longer stretches to flex its top end strength but by that time the runs usually coming to an end. Dodges are like impact sledge hammers to the chest 😂, mustangs pull an pull an pull til you say mercy 😂. Which sounds more fun lol 🤷‍♂️

It’s cool to see the comparison. The potential of the Coyote is the absolute best! Now the 170 is a Monster for a stock Mopar. Not sure you seen the Legion of Demons last weekend, but a few guys got into the 8.9’s without using the Transbrake. Thanks to everyone for making that possible!!! Ya'll rock!!
I would pick quicker vs faster. Low end punch off the line is more useable and fun than high-end punch at the top, IMO. You'd have to break the law to make use of the 5.0s power up top! Not so with the Demon/Scat Pack. That's why I wouldn't mind owning a 6.4. I don't need Hellcat/Demon levels of power. The 6.4 can play down low too, and cost a lot less!

Thank you for this informative video. These are two entirely different approaches to building cars. Turbo vs. supercharged. Two valved vs. four valved. Single cammed push rod vs. double over head cams. Large two door vs. small two door. Two entirely different approaches to building a car. You pointed out the differences. So the Ford guys have a great car to hang their hats on. And the Dodge guys have a great car to hand theirs. Also have to add Chevy in the mix with their great performer too. Enjoy your brand and know that they all have bragging rights. I am from a time gone by. The 70’s were my street car racing playground. We also compared the manufacturers to one another. I still own two examples from that era. A 70 GTX and a 70 Challenger. I was in my teens then and believe me. We could afford with some effort the muscle cars of the day. Not true today. It’s those folks in their 30s and 40s with a good paying job that afford these modern high hp cars. As in very few teens can get these type cars. As some things have changed a lot stays the same. Some might know what I mean. Enjoy them as it might be the last hooray.

One thing that people are forgetting about is that I am the only guy out there actually racing people in their 170 .. people are out there time chasing and getting perfect launches with poor reaction time because they are sitting at the light trying to get everything perfect. Under better track conditions I would have done better against the plaid but it didn't have anything to do with me. I couldn't really help the lack of prep .. and the Demon needs a hard launch to beat the plaid. I have seen every time that is 9.2 or better run out of these cars so far and all those cars had some things done to them in one way or another. Some had multiple things taken off to lighten them up like bumper supports .. others already did a trans tune (which is the most common thing I have seen).. Its doable and I do think I will get a better time with the right conditions but racing other cars is a completely different game

I guess the real question is where will you do most of your driving? If it were primarily a street car then the Mustang having a softer hit on the bottom would be advantageous due to non-prepped surfaces; however, if you are a weekend warrior and visit the track more where you have a prepped surface then I would go with the Demon because on a prepped surface your 60 foot is usually where the race is decided and having a strong bottom end launch is going to be paramount.
To be fair I have been in a Supercharged Coyote powered Mustang that produced far better launch times than your turbo car that are on par with your Demon's times and still ran out better top end wise and I would attribute much of that to the transmission in the Mustang having more gears with a taller top gear ratio but I could be wrong. Either way I love these two cars and would be happy with either. The Mustang is a bit more fun simply because it is built power and not factory bought power so it gives you more creative leeway on how you get to your numbers.

My performance pack Mustang spoiled me with the crazy brakes. Every once in awhile I get a chance to rail around corners and lean on the brakes. It’s so much fun, but the quick easy fun is accelerating. Dodge must have set that car up for weight transfer for acceleration. Clearly the Mustang is set up for decent acceleration along with cornering and braking.

Wanna bet about how fast your Mustang is you can flash in with HP tuners the Transbrake into the Mustang and it will get nasty probably as violent. And it has a bump button built into it. So try that and I bet your 60ft time gets better and I bet your 0-60 improves too.

Admittedly, I’d take the Mustang any day. I’ve got a performance pack car and I love the braking and cornering of the car. I’ve got a lot of backroads around me that really allow me to have tons of fun. I dig the challenger because it’s really roomy will pull hard.

If you didn't know, your Demon race against the Plaid was used on an EV oriented channel to say "close but no cigar". Basically talking about all the conditions that have to be met with the Demon to beat a Plaid that can pull similar numbers on the street. As far as my choice between the Mustang and Demon, obviously the Demon. It is just a badass car in looks and performance.

Racer X love your videos have been watching for years! I truly get the rareness of the Demon 170 but with all due respect you spent $120,000 dollars to go 1/2 second faster and it just doesn’t compute in cubic dollars! The S550 Mustang has a much higher ceiling and people are running in the 7’s with stock unopened engines (David Von Voris) ! I feel you gave up to early on the Mustang a simple converter change could have netted the 1/2 second difference in ET and if you got really serious with either car you can take out the 10speed in the Mustang or the 8 speed in the 170 cause seriously no purpose built drag car needs either one! Turbo 400-or Powerglide would be a better choice But $120,000 dollars spent on the Mustang would result in probably Low 7’s at minimum! Low end torque only enhances wheel spin!!

Quicker, no question. Most of the fun you experience all happens before 5252 rpms anyway, so low end grunt is the truest characteristic of a muscle car.
