Rear Brake Caliper Functional Restoration - Ford Transit (Piston and Seals Replacement)

- In this video I replace the piston and seals on the rear brake caliper of a Ford Transit van. During a routine disc and pads change I noticed the dirt seal around the piston had split and the piston had become severely rusted. This meant the piston and seals needed to be replaced to ensure the safe operation of the vans brake system.
Materials used:

Caliper Rebuild kit - contains news seals and piston
Heavy duty degreaser.
Threadlocker
WD40
Wire brush.
Copper slip grease - for anti-seize and rust prevention on the shafts and moving parts.
Various sockets, spanners and allen keys

You made a nice job of it. Surely the other side of the axle is ready for an overhaul as well.

Best view of the internals of a rear parking brake disk brake caliper available online in the world. Previously I used Chilton since 1970. For every used car I bought I got the Chilton to go with it, until you guys online did a superior job. Usually good information costs us a bit.
Great video. I like the deliberate, slow pace of your movements to ensure the camera catches the detail. You perfectly captured the tranquility of the workshop. Methodically disassembling, cleaning and reassembling. Meanwhile in the distance a dog's bark, the call of a bird, children playing. I think you have watched a lot of This Old Tony.

Sorry but the best bit you missed, the bit where you try the hand brake after rebuilding to see if it is actuating the piston, or needs adjustment

Nice work, always good to see a disassembly/reassembly job in motion rather than in words or stills :) I was going to suggest winding in the piston on the vehicle with the bleed nipple open to catch the fluid, but then it would have been a pain to remove it again once fully wound in ;)

Good job, thanks for your time and patience. One thing: you should wear latex gloves, brake fluid is poisonous.
Fantastic job, great attention to minor details, numerous gold stars for the loctite which is very often forgotten. Wanted to see the screw mechanism and understand how it works, why would they do that? The best mechanics always have the dirtiest hands. "We don't need no stinkin' gloves!"

I see you didn’t take out the handbrake mechanism. My caliper looks to be just like that. But the handbrake mechanism in the caliper isn’t held in by a c type retaining stop ring like other designs, from what I can see. Did you come across this and do you know how to take the mechanism out???

New calliper is certainly easier. Rebuild is a lot cheaper though if you have the time.

May I please know why you didn't bother removing the handbrake assembly? I have a Toyota where left Ebrake is not working so wondering whether a rebuild would fix it?
I did the rebuild since the main seals were leaking. There was nothing wrong with the handbrake mechanism so I didn't feel the need to touch it. I learnt a long time ago; If it ain't broke don't fix it. Cheers.

Why My calipers keep leaking from the rubber seal after a couple months of replacing them. I've had to go back and get warranties for the rear driver side 3 times in now the. Rear passenger side will be the third time.
Is there a way I can just rest? Did rubber feel? Because it keeps coming out from there

Very nice job! I have the exact same car as you. Mine have left turn caliper stamp on the left side and right turn caliper stamp on the right side. I do not find left turn and right turn caliper stamp anywhere to buy. Do you know where to get this? Thanks!

Is it worth changing the wheel studs too, I had a wheel work loose on my Trany and the studs were made of chineeseum?

Wheel studs are not supposed to be changed, unless it's needed for some extraordinary reason!
Do things properly and the possibility of problems vanish into thin air. ;-)
About the studs being "made of chineeseum" that's normal! In engineering that's sometimes called a fuse... If something as to fail in a system, you already have programed "failure" point on a cheap and easy to replace part without compromising the entire system!
A good example, shear pins on any propeller or prop shaft on tractors or snow blowers! ;-)

What's the actual name of the tool, to push the piston back in, i tryed manually, didn't work

In the absence of a proper tool...
- An angle grinder wrench can work quite well!
- Needle nose pliers, specially the bend tip type. can also work.
And a few other options. Although the right tool for the job always facilitate! ;-)
