The Secret for Caliper Piston Dust Seal Installation

  • Just a quick tip video on how to install dust seal boots on your brake caliper. I struggled to find a video how to do this and found an easy way to do it so I’m sharing it with you. Nobody seemed to have any good information on this. The caliper is from a VW MK2 Polo and I’m refurbishing the brakes, but this will be the same on a lot of different car makes and models.

    This is the first video I found that shows how to get the piston seal back on after removing it. I was struggling until I found this. Thanks for posting!

    It’s an absolute ball ache of thing to do especially when attached on the car still. It’s infuriating to get the seal to sit on the caliper. I really need to get the caliper off the car in the future. Great video.

      It can be easy. I had one on the same caliper that was easy and one that was an hour of frustration. Hose clamped the boot lightly to the piston and that worked.

  • @squirrel_ca9745
    @squirrel_ca9745 4 дня назад

    Using a compressor makes this process so much I’m easier. Insert the rubber dust cover first, then apply a small bit of air to the caliper where the brake hose connects and at the same time hold the piston softly against the dust cover. The air will push the dust cover over the piston for you with no effort at all.

    • @menditman2004
      @menditman2004  4 дня назад

      @@squirrel_ca9745 I think my method is pretty easy I did it in seconds in this short video, I think for some using the compressor could be to much and they could damage the seals or even trap a finger. My way is safe.

    @simonalexander8921 24 дня назад +2

    Just one slight modification to your method, if the boot keeps coming off, secure the front part with a zip tie, this prevents the dust cover from sliding off and allows you to extend the cover further back for easier installation and just open up the zip tie when done. Great vid thanks.

    I use this method but, when trying to get the dust boot to get in it's groove and the boot continues to slip off the piston I LIGHTLY hose clamp the boot to the piston so that it doesn't slip off. Operative word, Lightly, as you don't want to puncture the boot. After an hour of struggle, this is the only thing that worked.

    • @chrisjohannes179

      You can alternatively use electrical tape around the piston to hold it.

    Unbelievable! I restored my first car 35 years ago, have saved countless callipers (usually stiff pistons due to rusted dust boot channel rust).
    Anyway, always struggled with the boots as had put boot in calliper first. Kept thinking I must be missing something, found this vid, tried it, works like an absolute charm.
    Thank you, thank you!

    Si seulement j'avais trouvé cette vidéo plus tôt, je n'aurais pas bousillé un joint cache-poussière en voulant l'enfiler dans la gorge intérieure de l'étrier puis de mettre le piston après en espérant que la lèvre du joint passerait entre les deux.
    En tout cas, merci pour cette belle vidéo très précise.

      Hahah I know the feeling, I did a valve cover + spark plug tube seals replacement on a 2002 Honda CRV and nobody has any info / videos about how to put the plug tube seals around the metal tubes, so I ripped them all trying to put em on. Turns out you have to carefully push all the seals around the metal tubes individually instead of just pushing the entire valve cover on at once. (yes I used a lot of engine oil to lubricate them both times)

    • @kovie9162

      That little grease packet is for the glide pins and pad contact points, not the piston. It's probably ok there but not what it's actually for. You're supposed to put a little brake fluid there, including around the seal before installing it. That should lubricate it enough.
