- We are in a Visual Novel BOOM! So I want to recommend a visual novel I've been enjoying lately. VIDEOVERSE is like what if they made Hypnospace Outlaw into a romance anime. Anyone who has spent time in an online community will find something to relate to.

Hey I'm the developer of VIDEOVERSE! Loved your video, thank you so much for making it and checking out the game! ^.^
I really appreciate the work that you put into the closed captions. Not only are the emoji enjoyable, but they are especially relevant here given the subject matter. Cheers.
Seconded, it really elevates the audio!
And it's a level of production that I almost never see anywhere else with captions!
lol naming the new console after the popular Nintendo Emulator is a hysterical choice for this game considering its obvious inspirations.
'Dolphin' was the project name for... some Nintendo console or another before it got its final, official name.
This was wonderful (as always). It's got me thinking about the online communities I've been part of that have gradually drifted apart either from time or platforms shutting down. I also appreciate the Cuno jump scare immensely. You got me good there.
Hahaha Cuno lives in my brain rent free now forever
I don't have anything substansial to say, but you said you love comments and I loved the video. Thank you! Your channel is ultracool. Now I'll go watch the Daniel video.
I DO LOVE COMMENTS!! Thank You
This is such a cool and cute and charming looking game! I'm glad Visual Novels are having a renaissance, and I'm glad that I learned to look past my initial impressions when I was a kid about them. I just bought it and look forwards to a blast from the past. Also I have been consistently floored by how well written and presented the videos on this channel are, y'all rock and are super talented! Thanks for the amazing funny and thoughtful videos.
Thank you so much!! I appreciate that a lot ❤️
This game was on my baklog for a long time. Your video made me want to play it so much. Really loving the ammount of amazing visual novels we are receiving in the west and these ones made by independent developers
something about the narration style makes it very pleasant to listen to, im not sure what it is but i enjoy it
Interesting video, thank you! Online communities are truely fascinating 'places', it's cool to hear that the game captured the experience :)
I've been glued to forums and social MMOs since I was nine, so this looks right up my alley. Awesome video and thanks for the recommendations!
10:55 holy crap you gave me flashbacks with that one... lol
;)
This video rocks and reminds me I still got to message back my Miiverse crush, I left her on read and she's still waiting for me I think!!
Send her some low res anime drawings from meeeeeee
Omg the UO drop took me totally by surprise. That was my first MMO as an 11yo. Thanks for that trip haha!
What's upppppp FELLOW UO GREMLIN!!! SONOMA FOREVER BABYYYY!!!
Thank you for the video recommendation! The game sounds so sweet and deep!
Part of why I love games as a form of media is how much can be done, even with genres that seem stuck in a particular state. Visual novels do seem to be primarily dating sims, yet there's so many options outside of that. I hope we see more experiments going forward.
Oh! I know a fun Visual Novel game franchise that does something a bit different. The Monster Prom franchise. As you can tell from the name, it is primarily a dating sim franchise, but they're multiplayer! And mostly competitive. Can you get a date for prom before your friends? Are you going to sabotage them by blocking a vital location they need to go to? Why is the shop selling a cadaver in a tuxedo? Goofy fun with friends, especially if you all want to read dialogue in funny voices. The 3rd game is a little different. Monster Road Trip is cooperative rather than competitive, as you need to balance resources in order to survive and reach a destination.
... Sorry. Got excited and infodumped. I really enjoy these videos and look forward to seeing more in future.
Oo yeah!! Monster prom! I forgot that one!! Thank you!
Love this one, Katie!
What a lovely review! It's by some serendipity that I run into this video shortly after reading a piece on the game in "EDGE" magazine. Thanks for showing plenty of details for the game without spoiling too much either. That's always a tricky balance to properly strike with game reviews.
I think I know the article you're talking about! That's how I first found the game too. After playing it I was like, dang, more people should see this!
@@KatieAndCatburger Heck yeah! And props to you for actually getting down to business and advocating for the game! I'd considered the game before, but this review was the final push I needed to properly check it out, and I'm sure I'm not alone among this audience!
To me it reminds me of using chat fora for dating n' stuff in the pre and post facebook era. Personally I found that it got worse as the platforms got bigger, it was nice that the platform wasn't a place where you could run into your mom randomly, but could be private in your own little garden. Being Danish those fora were of course much smaller than they'd be for anyone English speaking, but it's fun to remember the past that way.
I feel like I would have appreciated even more about this game if I had been from Europe since it takes place on a euro server. So many little pieces of slang and stuff I was like ????
@@KatieAndCatburger Honestly they'd probably sail over my head too, as I didn't really interact with pan-european fora, only Danish ones :p Apart from that I mostly just used World of Warcraft as my gaming forum for when outside Denmark and :p
For the record I stand by that WoW's success was being a chat forum with a game element (this is true for a lot of MMO's imo).
When you mentioned the awkwardness and social terror part of the game, I thought to myself, "oh, I can't play that, it will do emotional damage to me." But I often don't think about the value and catharsis of that kind of experience, and hearing more, I think maybe I do have to play this game... If I can ever find time T_T
This looks funn as a social media visual novel sim. Also if you like visual novels give Chaos law a try 😉
Also yes that was a thing on miiverse
Ooo a Raiko Rec! Directly on the WL it goes!
God...even just seeing this little bit hurts my heart. Ive been using the internet since i was 8 years old, making my first neopets account in 2000 by smashing my dead name and my dog's name together. I'vw moves around a LOT in the decadea since. I'm 32 now and have seen it all, growing up in specifically fandom and art spaces, so this specific experience is what i know deep into my core.
To see it so well portrayed, in all its beauty and horror, makes me weirdly happy but also kind of sad. The way the internet has become so centralized, monetized, and advertiser friendly has like. Been a nightmare, and i hope people my age and the kids growing up now can work together to build something better, but just as community minded and creatively inspiring.
I hope so too! We need like, a boys and girls club for the internet.
Oh, FreeZone. Super Hero High School. Shout out to Yellow_Hope.
Lots of respect for the developers mentioned. I've never been one to enjoy visual novels in the driver's seat, but I do enjoy spectating. The lack of a conventional "fail state" means that you can explore failures to their narrative conclusions. That part is appealing to me, but I have what some in the industry refer to as 'Goopy Goblin Gamer Brain.'
It's a serious condition!!
PLEASE do a video on Kevin(1997-2077). That game is the most inscrutable piece of media I've interacted with that felt theoretically scrutable as opposed to just pure nonsense.
I would love to just as soon as I figure out wtf its about
Welp, thanks for reminding me of when I was 12 and said the wrong thing to my internet crush, and then her friend messaged me to say that neither of them were ever talking to me again.
Have you played Orwell? From your video, it seems like it would be a similar kind of game, but from a law enforcement sort of angle. Maybe a bit closer to Hypnospace Outlaw.
WHAT NO I CANT RELATE TO THIS STORY NO NOT ME
Heck yeah!... I'll get to feel that cringe anew 😅 after typing something
Everyday I cringe and everyday I survive

I see wut u did there
Hey, really good video! One question though. It seems like you're highlighting a lot of western indie VN's as the "good ones" instead of those 'porny' Japanese ones that you kind of dismiss at the beginning. have you played many of the progenitors of the VN-- Stuff by Leaf, or Higurashi or Steins;gate or Fate sn? I feel like those are just as (and pretty universally more) deep and rewarding and subversive and funny as the new wave of western indies. VNs didn't start getting interesting with Doki Doki Literature club. I know it's largely immaterial as regards this one cool game you want to highlight, but it's a really, really, really rich genre.
That being said though, I really want to try this game now!
I appreciate the comment and perspective! It's def not my intention to imply that western indie VNs are the "good ones" that Japanese VNs were ever bad. My intention is to call out that I had this false preconceived notion about VNs the whole time. Ace Attorney was released in 01 in Japan and it's the first clip in the vid after all! While I def admit I have played more western VNs, I don't think they're better by any means. It's cool to see how more folks from around the globe making VNs is broadening the scope, and focusing on that aspect made sense to me as a way to introduce this particular game. Anyway, I haven't checked out any of the ones you recommend, and I appreciate the JP recs so I can keep broadening my own scope as well!
Thanks again!
@@KatieAndCatburger It's worth pointing out that _Fate: Stay/Night_ just got a rerelease on Steam, about which two points: It's based on the Realta Nua rerelease, which means none of the (mostly) gratuitous sex scenes, and they apparently did a huge screw up in the localization, although there are apparently work arounds.
11:10 Is that Loss?😑
wowowowow this is a comment i liked the video here's your comment
YAY THANK YOUUUU
