    The settings mentioned here combined with the MSFS settings shown at the end of the "How to fly the Hawk through the Lake District" video got me to the best possible visuals while still being smooth. MSFS looks essentially photorealistic in the headset for me now, It now looks like I'm flying a real plane with these visuals, it's incredible and it's what I've been trying to achieve for the last 5+ years but needed the technology to catch up.
    I'm still having to use DLSS to run the sim at Ultra settings right now but it's worth it since the Ultra settings just add so much visual quality and make everything look much more realistic. It'll take a few more generations of graphics cards to get even more clarity out of MSFS while maintaining a usable framerate but what I have right now is almost perfect and very enjoyable.
    Thanks for the tips. I've really been enjoying your videos, they are very well edited. I'm surprised you only have a little over 1k subscribers. Keep it up and I'm sure you'll get many more over time.

      I'm really pleased to hear this! I work hard to bring you the best recommendations possible. I'm sure i'll be updating this guide soon - to include Almalence and other elements that enable you to get the most out of your rig.
      My deepest darkest hopes (don't tell Mrs TallyMouse) is that QuadViews will somehow make it into MSFS2024.. i'm willing to jump on a plane to Seattle or wherever just to make this happen.. for free.. do you hear me Microsoft?

    Would you happen to know if the same approach will work for IL-2 Sturmovik?

    • @tallymouse
      @tallymouse  6 месяцев назад

      I am looking into it. IL-2 isn't native OpenXR, unlike MSFS or DCS, so you have to use OpenComposite, but IL-2 doesn't support any foveated rendering through OpenCompsite. There may be an option through SteamVR (OpenVR), but I want to make sure it is stable before publishing a guide.

    • @Boslandschap1
      @Boslandschap1 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@tallymouse Thank you so much for looking into this. I didn't know there was a difference in native support for openXR between MSFS, DCS and IL-2. Luckily, the performance as is in IL-2 is quite decent with OpenXR and OpenComposite, I wonder if going via SteamVR in order to enable foveated rendering is actually worth it. In any case, thanks for sharing your observations and thoughts with the rest of the community, it is very much appreciated.

    • @tallymouse

      Luckily OpenXR Toolkit maintains different settings for different applications automatically. So when you do the reset thing, the reset only applies to MSFS.

    How much improvement you get with FR on vs. FR off? I was unable to get more than 10% increase from about 40 to about 44 FPS in medium complexity add on airport and GA plane (4090, 7800x3D, Crystal running above native resolution - super sampling, DLSS Quality).
    I can perceive shimmer on the edges of FR rings if they follow my gaze, so finally I settled with FFR.

    • @tallymouse
      @tallymouse  9 месяцев назад +3

      If you use the presets, I only see about 10% too - the reason is, I believe, is that the preset's foveate region is set far too large, so that you're still rendering most of the scene at 100% anyway. Going with much more aggressive custom settings, I see closer to 25%. While being an improvement, it's nothing like the incredible performance improvements seen in DCS with QuadViews. I really hope MSFS2024 implements the QuadViews extensions! The DFR in MSFS doesn't appear to blend or smooth between regions, whereas QuadViews does, so you cannot see the shimmering quite as evidently as in MSFS.

    • @StekuVideo
      @StekuVideo 9 месяцев назад

      Even with more aggressive FR settings, I never managed to have more than 10% FPS improvements. The only result was more shimmering on the edges of the FR circles. I guess my FPS is bottlenecked somewhere in the processing pipeline, before the benefits of FR are applied.

    You didn't specifically mention how to set the DFR field in Pimax Play. Your own screen showed it set as "balanced" and then you also turned it on in the OpenXR tookit. I also watched your video on DCS setup, and for that one, you had DFR as "Off" in Pimax Play and then turned it on in the OpenXR Toolkit. For MSFS 2020, should DFR be set to "On" or "Off" (Or maximum or balanced) in Pimax Play? I've watched some MSFS 2020 Pimax Crystal setup videos that say if you set it to anything but "Off" in Pimax Play. Which is correct for MSFS 2020? Should DFR be "Off" or "Balanced" or "Maximum" in the Games tab of Pimax Play? Thanks!

    • @tallymouse
      @tallymouse  9 месяцев назад

      The DFR setting in Pimax Play doesn't affect any OpenXR titles that are governed by OpenXR Toolkit - such that Play DFR settings are disregarded.

    I keep seeing variations on the DFR settings, some say uncheck it in Pixmax settings .. some have "eye tracking" checked (on) in Pimax XR settings, some have it off there, i use msfs with OXR toolkits dfr turned on, so which is the right combo?

    • @tallymouse
      @tallymouse  8 месяцев назад

      The DFR settings in Pimax Play only affect SteamVR, they have zero impact on OpenXR. For MSFS, ensure you have eye-tracking enabled in PimaxXR, and then be sure to enable eye-tracking on also in OXRT.
      Cull outer mask (HAM): No
      Foveated rendering to Custom
      Inner resolution 1x
      Inner ring size 33%
      Middle resolution 1/2
      Outer ring size 60%
      Outer resolution 1/16
      Turbo mode ON

    • @tallymouse
      @tallymouse  9 месяцев назад +2

      As long as the Leapmotion service is running (and tracking) in the systray, you can enable hand-tracking via OXRT OSD by navigating to "controller emulation" under inputs and turning it on there.
      I plan to make future videos on hand-tracking setup in both MSFS and DCS.

    maybe you can help... I'm having an issue with the Pimax Play software itself. it's been installed. it recognizes that a Pimax device is connected, but I cannot access the 'Device Settings' submenu, so I cannot active any of those settings like refresh ratem backlight, eye tracking, auto IPD, tracking calibration, etc... My splash screen in Pimax Play does not state that my 'Pimax Crystal' is connected as you have in the lower left corner... only the pop-up stating 'Pimax device is connected'. do you have any insight on this behavior?
    Thank you and Aloha.

I've since disconnected them and turned off the settings in nvidia control panel; so I have a single monitor connected to my 3090 Ti along with the Crystal. iGPU is definitely turned off in bios. I've since opened a ticket with Pimax on DC and the staff are trying to help. it truly is an oddity...

      If is intended to give the 'cleanest' possible start to eye-tracking and DFR. During beta testing it became apparent that some users had pre-existing settings that conflicted in some way with eye-tracking and DFR. By performing a reset, that risk is removed.

    Why HAGS off?

    • @tallymouse
      @tallymouse  9 месяцев назад +1

      HAGS was originally devised to give the foreground application process priority (over everything else) with the GPU. That's great if you're playing 2D, but in VR your rendered (SteamVR, for example) is in the background, so HAGS can lead to choppy/stuttering for some VR users. I always recommend turning it off for VR.

    • @Titanex7
      @Titanex7 9 месяцев назад

      If I deactivate HAGS, I can no longer connect to my Pimax Crystal. If I activate HAGS, the Crytal connects again.
      The Crystal is connected via Displayport and the Pimax USB HUB.
      What could be the connection problem with HAGS disabled?

    • @tallymouse
      @tallymouse  9 месяцев назад

      @@Titanex7 Open Device Manager with the Crystal connected and ON.. and go through every USB device and ensure, in the individual settings, that "Allow Windows to put this device into Power Saving" is deselected for everything (including your display port/GPU)

      In Windows Settings> Power, ensure that Power mode is set to high performance.

      @@tallymouse Thanks for the numerous and logical suggestions, but unfortunately it didn't hit the crucial point that the Pimax can be connected.
      HAGS is still a crystal blocker for me.
      But the question why I should turn it off are problems with a smooth picture, right?
      Since I basically don't have any noticeable problems with it, it shouldn't bother me to leave HAGS activated.
      Of course it's a bit strange that my system is somewhere "different".

    • @tallymouse
      @tallymouse  9 месяцев назад

      @@Titanex7 HAGS appears to be a bone of contention with a number of people. For some it works fine, and others not. That's why I suggested simply turning it off, because it's better to have a non-stuttering system, than one where you gain a few fps (but could end up with stuttering). I suspect the HAGS system isn't completely compatible with all motherboards/processor/GPU configurations and drivers in VR. It wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft's testing revolved mostly around 2D gaming.
