Ok, some of my year long obsession notes regarding msfs settings. Shadows batter cpu and fps. Put them at low, the lot. It isnt worth it, and isnt noticeable. Ambient inclusion off. Raymaeched off. Light shafts low. All other cubemap and shadow map lowest figure setting. Use autofps. Set your highest and lowest. Massive difference! Everthing else high and ultra. 4090/7800x3d. Persinally i will chop down the shadows and stuff above in order to eliminate rhe need for FFR. I really dont want that fuzzynes at the edges of the eye. This is really a very good service to VR users. Really like you tallymouse.
Tally.... if i look out the side of the plane upon takeoff, and say i was at 36fps, is is smooth? Because i have the quest3 and use 36fps asw on - i see 72hz/fps. I was never able to use asw off, as it produced ghosting. Was this ghosting the low framerate of 36fps...or something else? 36fps in 2d is perfectly fine for me. But in 3d vr, its so much more different perhaps? Please help me mange my expectations.
Great feedback! I've been messing around with 8k shadows recently, as I got annoyed with the cruddy shark-tooth shadows marching across my cockpit - however, I agree, shadows are a killer!
@@tallymouseAhhh yes, agreed on the "tooth shadows" in cockpit. Forgot abou that one. Yes that one high, the rest low and even off. Tally. @speedvr829 if you set your IPD and things still feel wonky, remember that there are "per eye" IPD settings in Pimax Play itself.. important as very few people have truly symmetrical eyes!
Great work! I already got my settings dialed in, having an original Crystal (not light). Quadview makes so much difference for the fps. (Having a i9 13900k+RTX4090). But I didn't know about the image sharpening setting in nVidia control panel. Will check that out. I really miss my Almalence plug in i DCS :)

Thank you for this video on setup. I was wondering if you have ran into issues when turning your head side to side in DCS. In the cockpit it seems like the view shakes until you stop moving. Where the labels in the cockpit are unreadable while moving. Trying to iron out that issue.
this is an amazing guide and i have learned to optimize my systems accordingly because of it. But i have a question wondering if this is normal, while in dcs vr i see very defined lines in shape of an rectangle where my foveated rendering is taking effect. Is that normal?
It’s been mentioned a few times, but for some people it appears that image sharpening is shown in percentages rather than numerical values. What would you suggest the best percentage setting should be?
Excellent video, thank you. A quick question: is Quadviews necessary for MSFS as well? If so, are the settings shown for DCS applicable for MSFS for the 3080 case? I really appreciate your help.
I noticed a change in your OpenXR settings for the 4090 from OG Crystal to Crystal Light. Would you recommend these newer settings for the OG Crystal also? CAS 80%, Middle res 1/2 & Turbo On?
@@tallymouse Thank you. Any chance you will cover MSFS 2024? Right now I have it set to the same as your MSFS 2020 recommendations and getting around 40-43 FPS compared to 55-60 FPS for MSFS 2020. I’m guessing because of lack of QuadViews and better graphics in 2024. Mainly interested in what my OpenXR settings should be.

I’m seeing the same ‘Sharpen’ and %, and he did mention we might see this, but he did neglect to tell us what % to set.. should we set 25% to match the 0.25 setting that Tally mouse said?
Good job m8. Very informative vide but I have one question is this, as you call it native resolution 4312x5102 per eye or combined and how this is related to display resolution 2880x2880? Thanks.
All modern VR headsets render a much larger image for the headset to accommodate for the distortion profile. That is then displayed on the 2880x2880 per eye.
I would start with the 4060Ti setting, and then slowly turn things up until you're starting to see a noticeable drop in fps. The 7900gre is closest to a 4070 Super, so the 4060Ti would be a great place to start!
Very good stuff🐭 My Problem: MSFS 2020, 7800x3d/4090, using Pimax Open XR and OpenXR toolkit, 90HZ, half refresh rate, no SS, Maximum, Turbo Mode on, 46xx Resolution in OXRtoolKit with DLSS Quality, FFR preset, MSFS with high/ultra, TLOD 130. Sharpness and colours are amazing but when i move my head a little bit or the plane itself, the Cockpit and the landscape become blurry and some stutters too. I tried different settings, nothing helped. Any idea, what i am missing or doing wrong? Any help appreciated…. Solid locked 45 FPS/90 HZ or 36 FPS/72 HZ, no problems there.
Tallly Mouse I think you made a mistake with your motherboard specs. I’m sure you have an ASUS Maximus XIII Hero with an 11900KF and not an VIII series. Glad to see that the Crystal Light runs well on a 11900K with a 4090 GPU! Thanks!
Thank you for your informative videos! Question: I enthusiastically use Motion Reprojection with my G2 in MSFS - 45 FPS without vs. with Motion Reprojection makes a huge difference for me. What does Pimax offer here? Is there a working solution? I keep reading about Smart Smoothing, but it either doesn't work or creates unsightly artifacts and is actually turned off by everyone. That almost sounds like a dealbreaker to me. How smooth do you perceive the image in MSFS on the Light compared maybe to the G2 with Motion Reprojection?
Hello any help would be appreciated I just got this head set upgraded from the quest 2. The picture looks great it runs sooth as well. What I am noticing is when I move my head the left and right outer limits kind of bring a black boarder with it. There isn’t any type of shutter or any thing. Is this normal I never noticed any thing like that in the quest. It does it in falcon bms and dcs. Thanks
@@tallymouse sorry for the ignorance. Are you talking about room light frequency also not seeing motion smooth. I see motion comp but there isn’t any thing in that drop down. Thanks
Great video! From what I understood, you don´t set any antialiasing option in DCS, just use the settings from the NVidia control panel, am I right? Did you notice any difference (performance or quality) compared to set MSAA in DCS options?
Note that I am also using supersampling through QuadViews Companion in the Foveate region - so it's a bit like running MSAA over the central portion of the image only, so has better performance than running MSAA over the whole image.
@@tallymouse Hi Tally, its a great video! Thank you for the Sharpening tip in Nvidia. I have quest3 and 4080. Only thing that bothers me is shimmering in MSAA. When you play online you can't use DLSS or DLAA due to spotting. Does Quadviews work with Quest3? Many thanks in advance. (In description it say : Works with Pimax Crystal, Pimax 12k, Quest Pro, and Varjo Aero, Varjo XR3.)
For me, 120 hz is causing problems. I often need to reboot the computer for frequency change to work as the change itself causes Windows to totally freeze.
Is the refresh rate not tied to a game Profile? I have to manually go into PP Devices and change it when I switch game from DCS to MSFS? That seems strange..
That's what I do. However, more recently I've been running 120Hz and then locking to half-rate in PimaxXR, as i've found a solid 60Hz in both MSFS and DCS works very well. I believe the issue is that when you change refresh rate, the HMD needs to reboot, so if it's tied to a game profile, then you game will start while the HMD is rebooting..

Received my Pimax Crystal light, and although i have a set of dodgy lenses (being replaced by new ones from Pimax) everything else is good. I will say though, that FPS does matter here. At 36fps the whole world in MSFS "nano-judders". Its a slide show on a "micro-level". Same for 40 and 45fps. Its only until i set half -lock of 120hz and get a solid 60fps that i get a smooth acceptable flight. And i fly slow GA aircraft. Pimax light is great, but QC issues on their lenses needs tightening up. If my replacement lenses show up distorted like my first set, I wont be happy.
Yeah, I'm not sure what is going on with the lenses. As far as I'm aware, they're made in a precision optics factory in Poland - so I can't see why there should be so much variation between them. I see a few people over on the Discord have had to have new lenses sent to them too..
@@tallymouse Hi, thanks for the reply Tally. Do you know whether their replacment lenses fixed their issues? The thing i worry about, is if they turn up and still dont look good. Only other option right now is the somnium VR1. But the price of the damn thing is insane. 3K all in for just the unit and eye tracking. Cannot justify that much on VR.
The Aero's great, but I sold mine about 5 months after purchasing the OG Crystal, as I found the Crystal has a much large VFOV. The Crystal Light doesn't have eye-tracking, so there's that - unlike the OG Crystal. The colors are somewhat brighter on the Crystal Light, and it has local dimming too.
Have you tried disabling HAGS? With the Crystal Light the inside-out tracking is done by Pimax Play (PiService.exe) and if that's pushed into the background because of HAGS then it could affect your tracking latency.
Wait, if DCS looks like that on a 4060ti, what would Elite Dangerous look like? I was about to go with Pimax’s recommendation and buy a $1000 card. But if it looks this good with a 4060ti, why do I need it? The 4060ti is on their “Minimum” list
@@emkayusa remember that ED doesn't have quadviews, so you'll lose some performance there - but I'd definitely consider running on a 4060Ti, especially if you can turn down the resolution a little if need-be!
Tally, in Quad Views Companion I've found that having the Turbo box Checked seems to cause some stutter in the HMD, have you noticed anything like that?
If you're using QuadViews, ensure that you blank/default your OXRT OSD settings, as QuadViews settings can cause issues with OXRT settings if they are not default.
@@tallymouse To confirm... Tally, are you saying that you do NOT use OpenXR Toolkit for these tests and other software settings.. OR.. is it that you use OXRT but return to all default values? Thank you.
I have a an RTX 3080. I tried your settings for DCS. It’s perfect. My FPS jumped from 40-50 all the way to 71, I’m really happy. For MSFS not so much. With your MSFS settings I got 10FPS. Here are a few oddities. In your OpenXR settings (v1.3.2 same as mine) after Foveated Rendering setting (which I set as recommended to Custom) I don’t get the entry “Eye tracking” set to ON. I can see in the sim that eye tracking is ON. Just reporting it here just in case you recognize something stupid I did… Second issue is that in the MSFS VR settings for “Shaddow Maps” I can go only up to 2048 with my RTX3080. Your setting is 8192. So my question is are the MSFS settings really for 3080? Thank you for your help.
@@tallymouse what an incredible setting. At 4096, in my case, the MSFS FPS jumped to 40-50 depending on the flight. Over New York it's 40+. Looks great! Thank you again!!!
i cant get any image on the headset in dcs while using open xr runtime. but on my monitor i can see it takes the imput movements from my headset etc liek if its working but inside the headset i only see that space image from pymaxx, any tips?
I have exactly the same issue and i found out that when quad views is enabled both in pimax play and dcs i i have no video in the HMD. Disabling quad views in either fixes the issue but i dont think quad views is working for me for some reason.
the problem with this video is that it is not an example of the classic use of DCS starting from the MP, up to the clouds which are totally absent here
Hm, but nVidia Image Scaling is nVidia's older, general, non-game optimized upsampler (unlike the better DLSS), so why would one use that? If you activate the Overlay Indicator, it would show a green "NIS" ingame if upsampling is active and a blue "NIS", if only the sharpening is active. I haven't tried it for VR yet, but my understanding of this tech is, that it works only for 2D? That's why OpenXR Toolkit has a NIS feature built in, to do basically the same. So, if Sharpening is all you want, wouldn't the ingame (DCS, don't know about MSFS) setting work as well. Or actually work instead of the driver setting? Not trying to bash your video, but seriously asking, if I'm just mistaken. Cheers!
It looks like even a 4090 is a little underpowered for what the Crystal Light can really do, which is incredible. Hopefully the 50-series brings a whole new level of performance
@Deinecraft If you turn on QuadViews and enable eye tracking in PimaxXR, then IT doesn't know that you don't have eye-tracking.. so you can then use QuadViews in DCS as a FFR method, which works well!
It does not have eye-tracking, hence why it's inexpensive, however, you can trick QuadViews into working and use it as a very controllable/sophisticated FFR system.

@@tallymouse I'm currently deciding between the Quest 3 or the Crystal Light, I ordered a Quest 3 but might return it after seeing your video. I mainly play DCS in VR. Do you recommend I upgrade to the Crystal Light 3? Is it worth the extra money over a Quest 3? My CPU is 11900K i9 and my GPU is a 3080Ti
@Adrian3712 i have the Quest3 as well. I have a Wifi6E AP located 1m from the back of my head, and I use the Q3 through Virtual Desktop to get around the compression and through put limitations of the link cable. It's very good, however, even with everything cranked to the max, I can only just read the MFDs without having to lean forward. The Q3's lenses are good, but the lack of DP port combined with panels that have only half the pixels become really obvious when you have the Crystal Light dialed in and working. Especially in DCS. If you were a MSFS fellow, then the Q3 had other advantages like the MR PassThrough, which is kinda cool...
@@tallymouse Thanks for your reply! I got the link cable, I was worried about compression and limited capabilities of the link cable. I’m still scratching my head on what to do. Keep my Oculus Quest 3(haven’t opened it yet just in case there is a restocking fee) or return the quest 3 and get the Crystal Light. I like that the Crystal Light is better suited for DCS and based on what you’re saying I’m leaning towards that! @@Adrian3712 I still run a 11900KF with a water block.. overclocked.. and it just works! I guess I won the silicon lottery. I purchased it sight unseen on the interwebs from a Pawn shop in Queens, NY, for silly money.. and it worked.. what a win! If you can return the Q3, and lose minimal money, I'd go with the Crystal Light.. even if you have to turn settings/resolution down initially, the PCL gives you the opportunity to scale with GPU i.e. you could upgrade your system GPU in the future and the PCL will just keep unlocking more capability, whereas the G3 is capped because of the way it connects to your PC and it's lower resolution panels... If I'd already owned a Q3 and couldn't return it, it'd be a hard-sell to upgrade to the PCL.. it IS better.. but at what cost? However, you're in that enviable position where you can effectively still choose... plus, like me, you're primarily a DCS guy.. in that case, and based on my personal experience, I'd go with the Crystal Light.
@cuttheloop Depends: if you have no stuttering etc with HAGS on, then leave it on, as that also let's you use DLSS properly. If you encounter stuttering or shudders in tracking, try turning HAGS off.
After playing DCS on the Crystal Light for a week and deciding to tweak it for stuttering, I followed this guide. Now its unplayable. It doesnt display on the Pimax, only the boxed version on the regular monitor. I originally had Pimax Play and Pimax XR and it ran fine but now I DL the Quadviews and Quadviews companion and OpenXR toolkit and it destroyed my game. Beware.
@@vadenkwin You have to install OpenXR Toolkit, PimaxXR, then QuadViews in that order, and set PimaxXR to be the OpenXR runtime, otherwise the order of elements in the OpenXR Layers will be incorrect.
You don't enable "Prefer framerate over latency" ?? I thought it was the equivalent of Turbo Mode in OpenXRToolkit and that it should always be enabled to the best framerate!? Edit: I see that you have it enabled in the toolkit itself. I think it's the same thing, but do not enable both.
Yes - you'll be on the lower end of things, but it'll work. Remember that you can use OpenXR Toolkit to lower the effective resolution slightly and not notice much difference in quality. You can also do this in SteamVR, or in Pimax Play: setting "balanced" instead of "Maximum" resolution.
All great, but these settings goes out of the window if one tries to play DCS for real, on some MP server or real mission with multiple units, not a free flight on Caucasus map that doesn't push CPU/GPU anywhere near to what we could have on more modern maps like Syria, or so. Thanks for the video.
...but that could be said for any VR headset. I run my own server as I have discovered that many MP servers are run on low spec machines with asymmetric low bandwidth connections.
@@tallymouse Yes, we could say that about any headset, I agree. It's just : when I see videos like this, it feels like it's not showing all the truth, no matter what headset. Shadows batter cpu and fps. Put them at low, the lot. It isnt worth it, and isnt noticeable. Ambient inclusion off. Raymaeched off. Light shafts low. All other cubemap and shadow map lowest figure setting.
Use autofps. Set your highest and lowest. Massive difference!
Everthing else high and ultra. 4090/7800x3d.

Tally.... if i look out the side of the plane upon takeoff, and say i was at 36fps, is is smooth? Because i have the quest3 and use 36fps asw on - i see 72hz/fps. I was never able to use asw off, as it produced ghosting. Was this ghosting the low framerate of 36fps...or something else?
36fps in 2d is perfectly fine for me. But in 3d vr, its so much more different perhaps?

Good job m8. Very informative vide but I have one question is this, as you call it native resolution 4312x5102 per eye or combined and how this is related to display resolution 2880x2880?

All modern VR headsets render a much larger image for the headset to accommodate for the distortion profile. That is then displayed on the 2880x2880 per eye.

For me, 120 hz is causing problems. I often need to reboot the computer for frequency change to work as the change itself causes Windows to totally freeze.
Just a heads-up, did you know that using the image scalinh option increases load on the processor.
Yes.. so does QuadViews. However, the results are just dreamy!

How does the Crystal Light compare to the Varjo Aero? I love my Aero.
@@tallymouse Whats the max ppd on the Light?
Im getting great frame rates, however my head movement has a lot of latency. How do I fix that?
Have you tried disabling HAGS? With the Crystal Light the inside-out tracking is done by Pimax Play (PiService.exe) and if that's pushed into the background because of HAGS then it could affect your tracking latency.
Wait, if DCS looks like that on a 4060ti, what would Elite Dangerous look like? I was about to go with Pimax’s recommendation and buy a $1000 card. But if it looks this good with a 4060ti, why do I need it? The 4060ti is on their “Minimum” list

It can, yes. I have a friend running just that setup. He uses the link cable.
the problem with this video is that it is not an example of the classic use of DCS starting from the MP, up to the clouds which are totally absent here
Hm, but nVidia Image Scaling is nVidia's older, general, non-game optimized upsampler (unlike the better DLSS), so why would one use that?

@cuttheloop Depends: if you have no stuttering etc with HAGS on, then leave it on, as that also let's you use DLSS properly. If you encounter stuttering or shudders in tracking, try turning HAGS off.
After playing DCS on the Crystal Light for a week and deciding to tweak it for stuttering, I followed this guide. Now its unplayable. It doesnt display on the Pimax, only the boxed version on the regular monitor. All great, but these settings goes out of the window if one tries to play DCS for real, on some MP server or real mission with multiple units, not a free flight on Caucasus map that doesn't push CPU/GPU anywhere near to what we could have on more modern maps like Syria, or so. Thanks for the video.
