I grew and live half an hour from Cythiana KY (where the writier of the walking dead comic is from) and it is not nearly as bad a problem here as it is just 45 minutes south or east. It probably never crossed her mind as it's just a little invasive and not the plague it is in the Eastern or more southern parts of the state, and across the rest of the south
Someone make a horror game/movie/book right now where the threat is the kudzu and you have to escape, but eventually it surrounds you and you just pray it happens quick
Everyone is surprised that he's making a video on just a random plant, but you all should have known that he'd find a way to portray it as an eldritch monster.
Psalm 22 "My God My God why have you forsaken me?.... bulls of bashan surround me they pierce my hands and feet.... they cast lots for my garments... "“He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him.(R) Let him deliver him,(S) since he delights(T) in him.” "I am poured out like water" etc like with other passages in the psalms, genesis, (including theophany appearances in the torah) Isaiah, Zechariah, Daniel, Proverbs etc are considered messianic in rabbinic Judaism as the suffering servant messiah Ben Joseph, and to Christianity as Yeshua, Jesus bless you ❤ Edit: To expand on this is of course Isaiah 53 where you have the servant being crushed by God as an offering for sin for others, who dies and sees life and his seed afterwards, who dies with thieves and in a rich man's tomb, and who was despised and rejected, so why there is a common view of two messiahs, Ben yosef and Ben David, one messiah as the suffering servant and another as the conqueror who sets up the kingdom. Isaiah 52 the messiah draws Israel back to himself. Some fun and sad things are like people would say Jesus didn't exist despite Tacitus, Suetonius, Pliny the younger, Lucian etc and the apostles writings and the successors/church fathers of the apostles/bishops writings and josephus, because "Nazareth doesn't exist" until of course Nazareth was discovered, or another one, "there was no synagogue in capnernaum" until we found it, or Thomas Payne in age of reason "Bible is false because there were no kings during Jesus's time" until we found King Herod Agrippa's coins, or "Jesus wasn't buried in a tomb because crucifixion victims weren't buried in tombs" until we found crucifixion victims with the nails still in tombs in tombs. More cool things, are Jesus sweating blood in the garden of Gethsemane, this is a real phenomenon called Hematidrosis where death row inmates sweat blood, also another when Jesus is pierced and water and blood come out this actually happens when water builds around the lungs, it confused some early church fathers on the spiritual meaning, but it's a real phenomenon that occurs as well. Not to mention it completely chokes out everything and can only be killed by digging up the giant crown. We've lost so much of our ecosystem to kudzu. It should be a crime.
seems like the extreme version of the introduction of eucalyptus trees in the states as well. It was so weird as an aussie to find out that yall had an issue with eucalyptus trees destroying your native flora 😂
I killed an acre of kudzu in about 6 weeks. Here's how: I went to the florist desk at my local supermarket and acquired six of the little vials which get filled with water and attached to the bottom of a single rose, so it will stay fresh until you get it home. You can buy them in bulk online. I sprayed them with bright orange paint, so I would be able to find them among the vegetation. I filled them with herbicide and attached them at distances about ten feet apart. I simply severed the kudzu vine and attached them. Be sure the vine is submerged into the herbicide. I had to weigh some down with rocks so the liquid wouldn't spill out. Very quickly you will see a trail of brown, dying kudzu, meandering through the patch. Refill and relocate the vials as necessary. You'll be surprised how efficiently the plant drinks up the poison and distributes it. I also use this method to kill invasive plants which are near to, or integrated with food crops or ornamental plantings. I killed invasive climbing vines that were slowly harming a beautiful tree. DON'T FORGET TO PAINT THE VIALS A BRIGHT COLOR! Cheers.
A literal biological weapon... I had a friend in high school who dated this one girl and her parents hated him, ridiculed him to his face and brow beat him, but thy adored their outdoor garden, he plated three sprigs of kudzu in their garden late one night and their garden went to hell.
A better biological weapon is bamboo if you’re in a temperate climate, bananas if you’re in a tropical climate. Source: I live in a tropical climate, and it took me YEARS of hard work to eliminate the bananas and bamboo from my yard. They are both lovely if you can control them (with a 3-4 foot deep barricade that you put in the soil as a way to stop the spread of the rhizomes) but a nightmare if you don’t want them. It’s not very nice. Maybe use some blackberries or raspberries. They at least have some benefit, right? “I was just trying to help!”
@@sippigrrrlI live in the Midwest and we have banana trees in our backyard to add scenery to our pool. It’s crazy how resilient they are. The summers here are very hot and nearly tropical with how humid it is, so the banana trees absolutely thrive and reproduce bulbs like crazy, so much so that we dig up the extra bulbs and give them to friends to plant in their yards for scenery. The winters, however, are very cold and dry (can get into the negatives in Fahrenheit sometimes), and the banana trees die off, but the bulbs themselves stay in the ground. Without any maintenance to the soil or banana trees whatsoever, those things grow right back up in the summer like nothing ever happened, and they’ve done this without fail for the past 10 years we’ve had them. It’s absurd how resilient they are, and I can’t imagine how crazy they get when placed in a climate that’s tropical year-round.
when my family bought 20 acres in west tn, it was an abandoned property that was almost completely over run with kudzu. I used a propane torch to clear a center area then brought goats in. giving the goats access to water and free choice mineral (to ensure proper nutrition) and no other feed, it took 15 nubian goats 4 months to completely clear the kudzu. I used cattle panels to keep them close to the old falling down house to clear that section first. by the time we finished rebuilding the house the goats had cleared the kudzu. goats are the way to go for farmers and land owners

@@MilesDoyleSaltYou accomplish nothing. Copy-pasting isn't righteous work, it's low-effort garbage that's barely worth a second of actual introspection.
In 1934 my grandfather gave an oral report for his Chattanooga area high school about how kudzu was going to grow all over everything, killing the natural vegetation. Everyone laughed at him. When i was in that same high school in the 90s, the local government had bought and released goats all over Lookout & Signal mountains to eat back as much kudzu as possible.
As a kid in the 80s and 90s my first memory of Kudzu, was a card in the game "Magic the Gathering", it was a card with the effect, "Destroy target land". I saw a big patch of it in a ravine/forest one day as a probably 9 year old kid, asked my dad what it was because it covered everything. He told me it was called Kudzu, I then told him about that Magic playing card, and he said "Yep that's about what it does".
“People get their hands on a fast growing non native plant that seems to solve all their problems, only for it to grow rapidly out of hand due to excessive planting and a lack of understanding” sounds like the plot of a sci-fi horror movie, yet here we are!
It IS the plot of a sci-fi novel, Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham, it’s basically one of the original “survival horror” stories that have since been made popular by night of the living dead and 28 days later, very good companion book to I Am Legend
Kudzu is like the cosmic villain in a story that’s been slowly taking over for a thousand years but the dark lord is a bigger issue right now so everyone just ignores it
Who is a bigger villain kudzu or wendigoon? There's people who claim wendigoon is a far right pedo nazi who should be canceled and buried under the jail. I mean, who actually listens to someone so reasonable and down to earth. Someone who strives for truth. It's a disgrace to leftist politics.
I remember seeing a painting or drawing, illustrating a post-apocalyptic SciFi Story, in which Washington, DC was consumed by kudzu. I remember thinking, "So that's the way we go, not by fire, not by flood, but by *KUDZU".* Living in central South Carolina, I have seen many homes succumb to kudzu, so it really made a kind of sense...
I am an Invasive Species Specialist for my local state park here in the Midwest. In the entire park, only 4 Kudzu shoots have been found all of which I monitor consistently and have had to go back and cut and spray the root/vine with herbicide. I really appreciate you making a video on this plant. I have actively hunted for this plant else where in the park and have yet to find more, but keeps me up at night that somehow I'll miss it and it'll take over. I wish more people cared about our native ecosystems.
I think people don’t realize how it can damage. Also people aren’t outside enough or involved enough with their surrounding environment they probably have no clue what kind of plants and trees are normal around them
I'm in the Midwest. All I want is to work in state parks. I am a veteran drone pilot and grow indigenous plants of the Midwest and spread the seeds everywhere responsible.
I’ve helped plant native plants here in so cal at a nature preserve. We can all make a little bit of a difference and help keep native plants alive and keep animals alive too.
I am from Mississippi and kudzu represents the creeping sadness of the passage of time for me. When I was growing up, it covered forgotten shacks, old cars, shut down businesses, and other neglected things that time passed over. Signs that life was once here, maybe vibrance and fun but not any longer. Just you and the vines in this middle of nowhere town. Now that I am in my 30's, every time I return home, kudzu has claimed another one of my old hang outs. Growing over it and rendering it inaccessible or inoperable, much like the memories are to me now. They are there but they will never be the same. Kudzu is a horribly depressing thing for me.
@@pyropulseIXXI you're forgetting that it kills ALL the other plants. And I was told that the way it kills humans and animals is if you fall asleep near the Vine or if a wounded animal falls asleep near the vine because it grows so fast you could be completely tangled up if you're asleep for like 12 hours. And if you're in one of the areas where there are several root systems you can be completely swallowed by one while you're asleep. Like if you have this growing on your house and you have your window open and your baby crib next to the open window theoretically it could come in and completely swamp the baby and crib overnight. Sure you can probably just like kick your way out but if your legs are tangled up so you can't move them or whatever you're trapped. That's what I heard, not that it will actually strangle you like it's sentient.
I’m from Fiji. Kudzu is a major issue here too. During WWII the Allies brought kudzu to use as camouflage. Prior to WWII, the native plants on the hills of the main island would have been a sight to behold. Now kudzu is all that you can see. That and merremia peltata has decimated local species.
reminds me of how a lot of african tree species got introduced to the Hawaiian islands and out competed the indigenous species, I remember when I was on a helicopter tour over Kawaii the pilot pointed it out to my group
This is super interesting, thank you! My grandpa was on a team of 4 people that introduced kudzu to their farms in Auburn, AL. I don’t tell that story much, I’ve had people get mad enough to try and fight me in bars after bringing that up.
Other plants: needs specific conditions to grow properly, you know like any other normal plant Kudzu: THE ONLY THING HOLDING ME BACK IS THE WORLD ITSELF.
except from it's native origin aparently, lmao I kinda have to laugh at us incomptence at dealing with the problem. The plant can easily serve so many uses, and ever in case of Apocalypse scenario this is literally a miracle plant, you can use it as so many materials. How it became the devil really shows how bad at handling thing us is
I once dated a man from Alabama. He said he was walking through the woods when suddenly he fell through the kudzu and ended up flat on his back in a gully. The vines had grown completely over it so he couldn't see what he was stepping into! Luckily, he was able to get out, but you can easily imagine someone falling and hurting themselves and not being found, or a stray cow or horse falling into a ditch.
I believe it. It's horrible bad here in Alabama. We live on a farm, out in the country. It's overtaken the land across the street from us, but I think the road will prevent its spread to our property. But it's also overtaking an old chicken farm a quarter mile down the road. That patch might get us one day.
As kids in the 60's we played arboreal tag crawling over thick kudzu at the top of several acres of 10 foot tall planted trees. And we could kind of jump down through the canopy of kudzu to the ground and run and hide in another dimension, then climb through to the top again to pop out and crawl to escape tagging. That was a blast. No internet, kids outdoors all day being maniacs. I believe the trees and kudzu were planted to prevent erosion.
I used to work doing sewer inspections, and we had to go through these kudzu covered easements and wilderness in Alabama and Tennessee. One time I went to embark down a hill to get to a hole that was 200 feet in front of me. I stuck my foot forward slowly into the kudzu and almost fell. I couldn't get my footing. then it hit me. The kudzu had grown up the cliffside and around some huge white oak trees and had completely covered them, creating a false ground making a sheer drop look like a gentle slope. I nearly fell 80 ft possibly to my death. fucking terrifying, and it wasn't the first or last time I dealt with it. Just a day. I've spent several trying to find my way through 9 foot tall vines as far as the eye can see in every direction, unable to see the ground, barely able to see ahead or above.
That's like a horror movie plot. We had a gentleman coming to grade a steep gravel drive and cut back the kudzu. He has to stop because he ran into a FALLEN HOUSE. His equipment couldn't get around.
@@allisonh1408 in the winter time when its dead you can see how high up it grows, and the remains of dead plants and buildings underneath. It is a terrifying plant. It gets so dense too.
@WEAREALLJUSTMEAT Fellow sewer technician here. The only good thing about Kudzu in an easement is the shade in the summer. And that's about where it ends. It really sucks to run camera through a 400ft main with a cloud of spiders over your head. We spent like, an hour hacking into that stuff just to get the PACP equipment through and we ended up overshooting the manholes every time we did it. Walked right over them.
I once drove a 90hp tractor with a shredder attached to it off into a large area of Kudzu. The vines pulled the tractor down and I had to run, hacking with a machete the whole way, just to get out of it. I almost didn't make it. I came back the next day with a bulldozer to pull the tractor out and it was just gone. You couldnt even tell where I'd drove off into the stuff. Somewhere in the mess of vines in NW Louisiana, there is a John Deere tractor being held hostage. On a more serious note, I did often make jelly from the flowers and it is fantastic.
TN here. It's really bizarre. During the hot summer months it expands so rapidly it's unreal. Reaches out and entangles everything in it's path. Vines coming out of the ground, spreading from the trees to the ground, and everything in between. And it's a tough vine, with tons of leaves. It really does feel like an alien creature or something. Relentless and unstoppable. Dies off during winter then comes right back again. Kinda creepy. It's on EVERYTHING. The whole landscape just becomes vague shapes underneath thick layers of Kudzu.
The hills look like low rendered forests in games suddenly came into real life, it's insane! I just moved here and had never seen anything like it. I cannot imagine it's _not_ an environment issue.
Cool enough, you can actually use it as a sustainable and renewable source of grazing 'feed', as long as you take precautions to keep it from spreading outside of the designated areas. Specifically BECAUSE it spreads so fast.
When I was a little girl, I stood on the back porch of my friends trailer. I felt something on my ankle, to look down and literally see the kudju twirling itself slowly around my leg. This is why we released goats. Lol
As a sounthner, I can indeed confirm that kudzu covers absolutely every undeveloped plot of land- there’s a abandoned house near where I live, and it is absolutely covered in these vines- it’s so think you can’t even see the house- all you can see is the tip of the chimney… it’s kinda terrifying
I grew up outside of Atlanta. There were vacant lots across from my childhood home, and we kids would strip kudzu vines and use them to string walls up in our tree fort. So thick and sturdy!
Man, the fact that in like 10 minutes we go from "This plant will come into your house at night and STRANGLE YOUR BABY" to basically "we might actually power our cars or houses with this in a couple decades" is honestly wild, this is why I love your channel so much dude
That's kind of just human development as a whole, really. It's exactly what happened with atomic weaponry - in the space of... really, about a decade, it went from being the guaranteed end of civilization to what gives your home enough power to run your XBox and your gamer PC at the same time without having a massive electric bill
Years ago I saw on RUclips an interview with a high school kid who proved that helium killed kudzu completely. A neighbor helped him make a way to reach the root with a drill and long drill bit and a pvc pipe around it. Later he was a college student in Georgia furthering his testing of his discovery. Kudzu he killed was still dead a year or more later, and it didn't hurt the surrounding plants. I always wondered what happened to that kid and his discovery.
I am a New York native on Long Island. Someone in my area tried to plant this in their yard for some unknown reason. People got the town involved, they passed some kind of permission to force the homeowner to remove the freshly planted vines. Never knew why until now.
Isiah, you are my saving grace at work. I’m a groundskeeper so I work all day in 90 degree weather by myself and you make my job a joy because I always look forward to one of your videos. This is pretty much the only channel I religiously like every video I watch. Thank you for not just your work, but being an actual good guy.
As a kid I had a friend that lived in a supposedly haunted house. It was definitely a crappy house. The landlord kept fixing things just for three same problem to happen again. In particular the black mold was constantly mentioned in her complaints. A patch on a wall that had been torn out and bleached and rebuilt but the mold came back immediately anyway. After some years they moved and the owner tried to tear the house down, but any equipment that came near it immediately stopped working. So he abandoned it. Nearby a forest was being swallowed by kudzu. In two years the house was completely covered. Somebody bought the property and with the help of the fire department they burned down the kudzu, forest, and house. Now the entire area is a field, beans I think, like nothing ever happened. I've always thought it such a strange event that a demon was defeated by kudzu
The mold came back immediately because bleach doesn’t kill mold on porous surfaces it cleans the top layer of spores but it doesn’t kill the roots off you need hydrogen peroxide and vinegar to effectively kill mold.
@tylerj6327 since the spores are in the area, even if you tear the house down and build a new one, the spores will just start the process over again, right?
Idk. She talked about a lot of strange things and I thought all of them could be explained by "this house should be condemned". Until the owner tried to tear it down and every piece of equipment brought in broke down instantly. That was pretty odd. I didn't live there so maybe it was worse than I thought or maybe it was just a really crazy coincidence
The mention around the 20minute mark of just introducing the beetle nearly gave me a heart attack, because if you don't know a very similar chain of events have lead to the ecological disaster of Cane toads on the eastern side of Australia.
@@tomcoleman6803 yeah nah I remember hearing news about them crossing the NT border into the North of WA right before moving across to the Eastern side/before the pandemic hit.
Ladybugs were almost wiped out in my area thanks to the government breeding them with Japanese beetles. Big, mean, wounding, they were EVERYWHERE. But recently I found a red ladybug. Seems like they're pushing back after years
Fun Fact: In the show Life After People Kudzu is what helps destroy Atlanta. The plant completely takes over the city, and during a drought, a bolt of lightning causes a fire that spreads from building to building because of the vines, and the entire place burns to the ground.
i was OBSESSED with this show i used to watch clips in the morning on the history channel website cuz it was one of the only ones not blocked on the school computers lol
When I was a kid, our backyard was right in front of a patch of woods that was consumed by kudzu. It led to a field that was also covered in it and it was just a massive expanse of kudzu. We were always told to STAY AWAY from kudzu. Me, my sister, and the other neighborhood kids had this legend of a creature that lived in there and would eat whoever went in, so we were scared shitless of the kudzu field.
As someone from Tennessee, it's almost surreal seeing a big content creator discuss these down-to-earth topics, things that happen in my own back yard and things I've grown up with. I'm so thankful we have someone like Wendigoon to make long form videos that expose and preserve these unique aspects of life in the South. It sort of makes me feel less alone in an internet full of people who are from the West or North-East. I really appreciate what you do.
I love wendigoon because its just so nice to listen to a video and feel like they sound familiar. Not a ton of southern content creators who also make content i enjoy. And he is awesome, because he makes so many random videos but theyre literally always something im very interested in or can relate to heavily.
Same here, I’m from Knoxville and have known people who hired those people that let goats eat all the kudzu, it was surreal seeing that mentioned in a video
its very interesting! im not from the US so this is not the sort of topic id become aware of naturally somewhere else. its cool hes shining a spotlight on it!
Funny thing about Kudzu is that one of easiest way for us to fight it is to literally start eating it ourselves. We could be the natural predator for it. Aside from the seeds and seed pods, every part of the plant is edible. The leaves are like spinach, and roots can be cooked like a potato.
@@HoushalterI think the issue is that this plant kills everything around it. It takes out trees and grows over, around, and in water. It is dense enough to block out light. All this means is the animals that would eat it aren't going to want to live around it due to those properties, especially the last one because it makes them vulnerable to their natural predators. No wild animal is going to travel for food more than it has to, especially not when it will put them in more harm.
We had this corn/bean field that was covered in kudzu on the west end of it. Me and my brother used to go play in it and we went to where it was growing in the woods we went under this tree that had like a kudzu canopy and we made it our "base". It never wrapped around us and killed us although it did make us trip a few times.
Many rabbis into gematria etc say there is a curse upon reading Daniel 9 because it says Messiah The Prince must come and bring in eternal righteousness before the destruction of Solomon's temple, no wonder they say that as then if Messiah didn't come before 70 a.d. there is no messiah, those who have divided messiah into two were confused if the messiah would come riding on a donkey or horse, so the two messiahs, as opposed to the jews who believe in Jesus and himself, who state himself and two arrivals. Of course this is why Islam falls quickly because while they call Jesus messiah they don't understand what it means, and Muhammad of course denied the historical fact of Jesus dying by crucifixion (Which besides tacitus mentioning pontius pilate doing it to him, we even have an inscription that was uncovered oh pilate and dates lining up with his time being the procurator/prefect over Jerusalem) besides Muhammad being the total opposite of Jesus, Muhammad had sex with his child bride Aisha who was nine, he beheaded and crucified people, said not to trust jews and Christians, he had Ethiopian slaves and called them raisin heads, he called jews monkeys and rats, he slaughtered villages and the wives of families he killed said you can take them and have sex with them, he got caught having sex with his slave by Aisha and said he would not do it anymore then conveniently "Allah" comes and says it's fine and he can, he's a textbook false prophet, with of course takiyah being they will lie to you about what I said above, Islam is meant to subjugate the world I'd into belief by force, if you don't convert you must pay a tax, if you don't pay it you die. Allah has no love for unbelievers unlike Jesus who loves his enemies and we are meant to love all even to death, I'd write more but youtube doesn't like long messages, with eastern thought eternal universe doesn't fit the mold because and infinite amount of successive events becoming then impossible to have the present, we would never reach today because we would always have a yesterday or event before this moment, an immaterial, spaceless, timeless, mind (agency) bringing space-time into reality, is the best explanation for why anything exists including someone as amazing and as lovely as yourself 😊 So the disciples who say "For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty." And "13If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith. 15In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses about God. For we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead, but He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised. 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep." Since the witnesses knew whether or not they were lying and knew what it would mean to continue to say he did in fact rise and is the Messiah and God in the flesh then yes I believe them as The Messiah had to come during that time, a mind/agency creating the universe is the best cause for reality, Jesus is the most moral, truthful and charismatic and loving and honest person there is, and the most important and influential, (Buddha said he was still searching for truth, Jesus say, "I am the truth, the way and the life") Jesus gives us love and salvation as a gift without earned merit by us, not working our way to the truth or God or eternal destiny through every other religious and spiritual framework, he loves you and cares so much for you before he created you and wants a living relationship with you here and now not just after you die 😊 There's a million other things to cover that I want to say but this is probably a good stopping point but Jesis wants to remove the shadow in your life and Jesus wants you as you are right now he wants your heart and to live in you and you to know his love personally 😊 I had people prophesy over me very specific things nobody else knew about my past, things I was thinking or experienced even just the day before, Jesus healed me of sleep paralysis I had for years, depression and loneliness, I had a dream of a woman named Heather and a voice telling me their dad had died, a couple days later i meet them and they tell me about how they had just lost their dad that week, I feel God telling me to sit down and close my eyes and I see an outline of someone going to the bathroom very bizarre, then shortly after someone out of the blue asking me to pray for them as they are having trouble going to the bathroom, another was I ask Jesus alone "are you my buddy?" A couple hours later someone contacts me and they say "Yes Jesus is saying yes he is your buddy" another time was I obsessing a little over this blue suit and someone prophecies "I see you in this blue suit" etc, another time I was testing this whole thing and I'm about to be prophecied over and I have my Google notes out I had tried writing out a little story and it was about a fire and forest being burnt down and I ask God to confirm if he wants me to write this and sort of as a test because everything had been scary accurate and the person right after says "God wants you to be his little stick lit ablaze with his love, it may not seem like much but one small flame can burn down a whole forest" 😂 another one was I had this. Surreal vision looking at stars, shortly after someone messages me saying Jesus is looking at a telescope with you saying to you "everything I have is yours even the stars" another one I was in the bathroom asking God for a message for my friend Moses in Nigeria and as I'm leaving the bathroom i freeze in place and go into this bizarre trance like Peter in the book of acts and I see my friend Moses as a child playing with a toy firetruck and Jesus sitting next to him with love, I quickly tell them and they are in shock as they had just thrown away that toy that same day, another time I had gotten a word from God about someone close to me who hadn't accepted Jesus and that they had been praying to God secretly, I told them that and the look on their face was priceless as I had no idea they had been praying to God at all, they were shook 😄 this is only a handful of many a 100 times in just the last 12 months after 5 years of me being born again, there's so many more amazing things that have happened but you are beautiful and desired of God, he is a gentleman and will not force you to choose him or love him but he loves so so much, he's asking you if you will come, he will love you and cherish you everyday of your life, he will never abandon you, I beg you to take a chance and not reject God's love for you, he wants to heal you and you to enjoy a living relationship between you, God bless you so much, Jesus says to come to him for rest your weary soul he is humble and meek and tender and gentle, he loves you so much he knows everything about you, nothing about you is unimportant to him 😭❤❤ If you repent and call on his name you will be saved from hell and Jesus's wrath and judgement for all have sinned!! ❤ For God so loved The World that gave his only begotten son that whoever should believe in him will not perish but have eternal life!! 💙🙌🏻 repent all have sinned and fallen short!!❤️🔥❤♥️ ❤️🙏🙏✝️
I live in Louisiana. I hadn't thought about kudzu in years, up until this past Christmas season. My great-grandmother (Grama without a d, that was always how she spelled it on our birthday cards) lived up a small hill from her daughter, in a little butter yellow house. The woods around the house were covered in kudzu, closing it in. To a little kid of six years old, it was imposing. Mom always told me to never go out in it, since you could never tell if there was a hole in the forest floor underneath the vines. Because of that, it always gave me an uneasy feeling to visit Grama up on the hill, like something could just reach out and grab me from the dense, endless tangle of vines. My mamaw, Grama's daughter, eventually had to sell the house when Grama started getting up in years and developing dementia. Even as a kid, I was sad to see it go. So, present day. Far back behind their houses, on top of the hill, was a cemetery park that's still there to this day. The town has a cute little Christmas parade every year, so me and my friends from college decided to go, since it was a huge nostalgia trip for me and another girl in our group, who grew up in that town. We walked through the cemetery park to kill time beforehand, and thankfully, the kudzu has mostly been beaten back from that area. But as I neared the top of the hill, I could look down into the town, and I realized we weren't far from Grama's house. Then I saw a glimpse of butter yellow paint. Something in my stomach just sank when I realized I was looking directly at the house. It was completely swallowed up by kudzu. I just kinda stood there misty eyed for a while. So many memories underneath that mass of greenery. And now this video has jogged my memory again. I miss you, Grama. I'll see you again one day.
As an ecologist, this is really awesome to see. If more people knew the damage that invasive species cause to native wildlife and fragile ecosystems, I feel like they would care more to do something about it. It's really as simple as knowing what's invasive and creating a removal plan. Myself and a couple of buddies will clear stuff from the sides of highways in our free time, we dont have permission to do so, but we do it anyway. I swear, If people just started to care about their local environment more, and made efforts to affect it on a micro scale, eventually there would be positive change on the macro scale. You don't need a college degree to identify invasive species and remove them, you can make huge impacts on native ecosystems if you have some free time and the right determination. It also doesn't hurt to have some like minded friends and a cooler of beer. Thank you Wendigoon for making a video on a topic that is unfortunately not well known to the mass public.
By the way, have you tried eating it? You can process the roots for an edible starch that's used in japanese confectionery. And since the roots are the part you really gotta kill, that creates an incentive to be thorough.
I lived in Alabama for 21 years, and my parents still live there. My grandparents’ old house (now my Mom’s) has a small ravine with a creek, and the entire area was blanketed in kudzu. The rest of the property is either cleared or old growth trees that the kudzu wasn’t able to claim. I remember hearing maybe 20 years ago there was a cosmetic company that was harvesting it and using it in skincare products.
I'm Canadian and the one time I visited Atlanta, I thought it was so beautiful how the lawns weren't boring ol' grass but sprawling leaves and vines instead. I thought it was an intentional landscaping choice.. then I learned it was a massive triffids-like invasion out of people's control 😅
At one time the City of Atlanta was requiring property owners to remove the kudzu foliage or be fined and charged the cost incurred by the city. When uncontrolled, the kudzu would "mound-up" and create leafy walls which obscured traffic visibility and caused accidents!
As an Asian American living in the South, yes it covers absolutely everything, but I'm also always being told by my parents that we can dig up the roots & eat it as emergency food. Once cooked, it has the same texture & taste as tapioca, which is what they use to make boba in boba tea. Which is my favorite drink of all time. So like, I'm always stuck between horror & hunger when I see these empty plots overrun by kudzu.
you can eat every part of it but the vine itself, iirc. the leaf is basically just spinach, the root is nutrient dense, and the flower is apparently tasty. when society collapses the american south east will have basically endless food no matter how bad things get.
The exapansive stolons are easy to backtrace to rather significant rhyzomes and tubers. I've personally dug up tubers that were 3 feet long and as thick as a man's arm.
@@MasteredMagic kudzu is native to East Asia. I think dude was implying his family has eaten them for years as they were local to them in the old country.
If less land was in the hands of corporations , absentee landowners and the Federal government , you wouldn't have that problem . Kudzu is easily managed by an attentive and persistent landowner
I work as a land surveyor, and I absolutely hate this stuff. I once walked off a collapsed bridge because of kudzu. The bridge had fallen years ago but the kudzu was still growing in the general shape of where it was. So I assumed it was there, took a step, and fell 15 feet through the vines. Luckily the vines sort of caught me and the bridge was pretty short to begin with.
So the kudzu both endangered and saved you. Such an incredible situation, and story to tell! I should have something religious, apocalyptic or both to say about it, but I can't. It's just so interesting! I hope you didn't get hurt, though. I know vines can give you bruises, rope burns and such, and also 15 feet is a lot.
@ingridn0g it was such an odd situation, I didn't really have time to process what had happed until I was already down in the creek bed. Wasn't hurt at all luckily just kind of in shock lol. My coworker witnessed it and said it looked like I had been swallowed by the vines hahaha.
I never expected Wendigoon to make a video covering nature, but I'm very pleasantly surprised! This damn vine is a stain on the south and a hugely destructive force on the grand scale that we need to get rid of while we still can. I'm glad that you're doing your part to spread the word!

I fought a war with Kudzu every summer my whole adolescence. My dad had some property with a tv tower on it. He made me mix round up with diesel fuel. Even when the leaves and surface vines died, the roots would always allow it to grow back. The roots were what you had to destroy. You had to dig and axe several tree sized living roots and even then it might come back. You basically had to remove the roots from the topsoil. Very difficult to eradicate.
I inherited 1.7 acres and my boys and I spend most of our vacation weekends trying to control mulberry trees. They grow very fast and birds spread the seeds everywhere. We just try to keep the lane drivable but struggling to get rid of stumps on a beer budget.
The diesel was the problem. It scalds the leaves off of the plant before the chemical kills the entire plant. I wasted a lot of time, effort and money before I learned that.
I remember when I first took amtrak from Phoenix, Arizona to Charlottesville, Virginia. I saw kudzu in person for the first time and said "wow" in awe of it only to be told "you should hate this stuff it starves forests". I was shocked.
I know, right? I'm in NC, and this stuff has taken over the area by the Catawba River. It was beautiful when I first saw it. However, I helped my grandpa kill the vine when I was young, and I can tell you that everything it covers dies. We found nothing but death underneath those vines. To this day, it is frightening when you see a massive section of it because you know it there is nothing but death under it. Oh, and spoiler alert, my grandpa and I never got rid of the stuff. We just cut it down yearly now.
I feel the same way and I was born and still live in NC i still see it and I am still in awe of how vast it is and how it takes over everything and how resilient it is. I would love to use it for decor for my home but i know it is an invasive species so I don't touch it
yeah i live in that part of va and at a festival they showed tons of pictures of the dead stuff underneath it and its horrific. my neighbors are all farmers who care for their land really well so it doesn’t affect my house too bad, but it gets horrible if you don’t catch it veryyy early
My Dad was a salesman for PBI Gordon, a herbicide/insecticide company. They make a product for killing many different broadleaf vines including kudzu/poison ivy/poison oak. It pretty safe to use, doesn’t kill the grass or any other plants it doesn’t target because it’s some sort of enzyme that speeds up the growth so fast that it causes these vines to grow themselves to death. Pretty neat! Because it’s an enzyme it’s less than toxic to humans and animals too, very targeted at these vines. Here in NC kudzu is big problem too. I have seen some kudzu reclamation projects though, one in Belmont NC on the east side of the highway 74 bridge. They cleared out a whole side of the river and turned it into a park.
Yea im from the same general area, when i grew up in concord our backyard became this giant open pit of kudzu instead of what use to be a forest. Its in downtown concord near the food lion and would be perfect for testing that enzyme out:!
I had always wondered why no one had really focused on creating herbicide or something that specifically targets kudzu. Especially with the new genetic technology we have yk?
All herbicides and insecticides are considered safe when they're first created. Then about thirty or forty years later we start to see their downsides. DDT was considered so safe they would spray it directly onto kids. Then we learned of the horrifying health effects it has on humans over the long term, and we had the Silent Spring issues. Sort of like kudzu itself. It seemed like a godsend at the time. Everyone thought it was a great idea. They started spreading it around everywhere, totally unsuspecting of the problems that would arise a few decades later. As they say, if we can learn anything from history, it's that humans don't learn anything from history. I like the idea of goats much better. At least goats are a known entity. We have thousands of years of experience with goats. And if things get out of hand, lamb chops are delicious.
Something else you didn't touch on about kudzu: it makes incredible silky linen cloth. If we all weren't so overly reliant on modern plastic clothing I bet that kudzu would be harvested and used up pretty quickly. I live out in the South West but I hope to try my hand at spinning kudzu one day. Hopefully no one in these comments gets too twisted about me saying this. I fully believe that kudzu's introduction into a non native environment was a lousy idea. However, it's here now, perhaps we can go out there and take advantage of its qualities. Might as well make the best out of a bad situation.
I agree it was a bad idea, but hind site is 20/20. We don’t hear as much about the introduction of good non-native species of plants animals. Hopefully we can get a hold of these plants
Plastic clothing is not only unsustainable, but completely ugly. I don't get how people don't see it. All those plastic-nylon neon-colored shirts at places like Home Goods and TJ Max make me wanna puke. It just screams "middle class suburban white family," in the worst way possible. People who only care about value and prices and don't give a flying fuck about the bigger picture.
I think it would be difficult to come up with who’s going to harvest it and how they’re going to harvest it. It’s not like it’s just in a field. It’s all over privately and publicly owned buildings and properties. How would it be harvested regularly in a way that doesn’t inconvenience the property owners and others? How could it be harvested in a way that ensures whatever company is doing the harvesting is constantly getting sued for accidental damages to the property (damages would be inevitable)? How could it be harvested in a timely fashion? It’s all over the place, not all grouped together like typical agriculture. I just don’t know how it could be done in a way that makes sense for any company.
The Unkillable Trifecta: kudzu, tardigrades, and the immortal jellyfish. As someone from eastern Kentucky, I've seen the damage kudzu can do. It looks deceptively pretty in the spring and summer, until you understand it. But in the winter, it looks as if the hillsides have been skinned alive and their veins are exposed. It's truly hideous. Thanks for this video. I thought I knew enough about kudzu that this would just be a memory refresher, but nope. I learned a lot.
Nothing surprised me more moving from Georgia to Japan than being served a kudzu salad. I remember when we were growing up, no one ever dreamed of eating kudzu because the rumor was it would start to grow in your stomach and kill you. Some real Goosebumps Don't Go Into the Basement vibes. Went out to the mountains over here to visit my in-laws and it was like tripping through a door back into Appalachia. Really wild.
Allah has no love for unbelievers unlike Jesus who loves his enemies and we are meant to love all even to death, I'd write more but youtube doesn't like long messages, with eastern thought eternal universe doesn't fit the mold because and infinite amount of successive events becoming then impossible to have the present, we would never reach today because we would always have a yesterday or event before this moment, an immaterial, spaceless, timeless, mind (agency) bringing space-time into reality, is the best explanation for why anything exists including someone as amazing and as lovely as yourself 😊 So the disciples who say "For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty." The whole video I was just thinking “Man he’s talking about it being horrible but the pictures are just so gorgeous”. I’m glad you sort of feel the same way
Not so gorgeous when entire valleys have been absolutely COVERED with the stuff….I prefer a bit more botanical diversity, not just seas of the same plant overtaking almost everywhere you look. Seriously, it can’t be overstated how much kudzu there is everywhere you look. If any structure isn’t regularly maintained by man (especially in the summer), kudzu will absolutely devour it at just stupid speeds lol. It is quite literally everywhere down here.
As someone who also lives in Tennessee and also sees kudzu everywhere, it really is pretty. Like as he described it, it's a sea of green, which normally means good things. It grows up light poles and across power lines, completely covers old buildings and trees, and just looks really cool. It's a shame it's so damn bad for the environment.
@@SimplexStorm Agreed it looks good and these homes that are covered with some help could look nice imo with all the vines growing around it. Maybe if somehow we could find a way to keep them in check within a certain area.
Kudzu is integral to that Southern Gothic aesthetic. An abandoned Victorian/ Antebellum house just doesn’t have that je ne se quois without some kudzu growing on a wall or hanging over a porch
I think my favorite part of the story is that even when faced with an almost impossible situation: can't kill it, can't move it, it overwhelms everything it touches, can't do anything with it ... people didn't give up. They kept on fighting it, slowly and diligently, and developed a means to hold it back and use it to their advantage. That really showcases the best parts of humanity and our overall resilience and determination. We have come as far as we have because we just kept bidding our time, working diligently, maintaining our resolve and essentially using our big brains to keep figuring out how to make lemonade out of lemons ...
I'm not from the south, so I've never seen it here in the US, but I did see it when i was in Japan. And ngl, I find it kind of beautiful (yet a bit terrifying). Something about it completely overtaking areas (especially trees and forests, mountains honestly), it just gives me this sense of awe? Idk, its hard to describe. Nature just taking over and living on in spite of us is kind of melancholically comforting
I remember playing a game called SimPark when I was a kid and like the other Sim games there's a bunch of different disasters that can strike your park, one of them was Kudzu. It would start as one square and you would use the shovel to remove it and then it would disappear for a bit then come back in the surrounding squares. The only way to get rid of it was to remove anything within a certain radius of it. So my memories of Kudzu are hating it because it destroyed big parts of my park on SimPark.
@@cocknballtorture777 This is a braindead and grasping reply. The game is older than zoomers... But not only that what's wrong with remembering an instance of the videos subject from a previous life experience?
Oh yeah, we have them all over Georgia. I saw one overtake an entire apartment complex and thrive in the same area for my entire life. They are still there to this day.

I grew up in South Carolina and, like you, I also remember being driven past giant swaths of forest overgrown with Kudzu on the way to school. There was a stretch of road with 3 or 4 trailer homes right off the main road at the bottom of a little valley. Behind the homes when looking up the hill, it was like looking into a field of green carpet. It had grown over all the trees turning them into these really weird lumpy green pillars, and even some of the telephone/power lines. In my mind, the little gathering of homes was like the last hold out keeping the kudzu from crossing the road and swallowing the neighborhood. Thanks for making this vid, it brought me back to being a kid and I really appreciate that! Keep up the great work!
It's such a an odd thought that so many people don't know what kudzu is, but you're 100% correct: us Southerners definitely know this vine. Thanks for sharing!
when i was little i used to love kudzu. the way it covered everything and made landscapes look like turbulent green oceans. i thought it was beautiful. i know how devestating it is now, but the beauty still lingers.
I called my dad when I saw the title. My dad has stated many times that kudzu is his sworn enemy he even has talked about hiring goats to come get rid of it! Tennessee is absolutely covered in kudzu I didn’t realize it wasn’t everywhere until I moved to California and haven’t seen it once.
I've used arrowroot powder in baking and as a thickening agent for years. I didn't know the leaves or flowers were useful, I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the video.
I worked for an Agricultural conservation group in the 1980s, that was hired by the State of Florida Agricultural Division revitalization of beaches and intercoastal waterways. At one time that is all we did was remove the Kudzu vine from everywhere it was or it existed. It was introduced in the 40s to the Gulf Coast to help beach erosion. But as it is it took over killing Mangroves and everything under it. It makes a canopy over everything and crushes it. You're right, it is a beast to remove and kill off. I've removed some of it were it was the size of a large tree 4ft round. I had buckets of Roundup paste to paint the stumps and it just grew around it. We go back monthly to keep it at bay. A nightmare of a plant. Tear up heavy equipment from trying to pull it down without damaging the native plants of Florida.
@@TheOsu22oh no problem. My mothers side of the family is from Florida. I lived there for 13 years. Loved it. On the Southern Gulf Coast. I last came home to visit in 2003 and was shocked at how much it had grown. Got friends that tell me that it's even more developed now. The company I worked for advised the state to stop building on the inner coastal areas 30+ years ago. But no one listens then and now have the problems they do today.
As a transplant gardener who lived in the south for 25 years now, can confirm this and fire ants are terrors and monsters. Total war when it comes to them! Awesome video totally on brand.
I had the displeasure of encountering and learning about kudzu when I started my first real job doing cultural resource management in Mississippi. Being stuck in the suburbs for a big chunk of my life in North Texas I never had the opportunity to learn about kudzu until I saw it in person back in September. The real fun thing about this fucking vine is that it'll hide little potholes and if you're lucky will hide a BARB WIRE FENCE in the field. It's like walking on an endless sea of foliage with no soil to walk on ever. The most memorable experience I had with this monster was when me and the crew I was in had to get past a patch on the side of a road, the way it slopes like that beside a road? That's because it's growing between trees and a forest floor it forms a canvas over, we soon learned. The guy at the front of the group realizes he's seeing holes in the patch that drop like 12 feet into a forest completely obscured by the kudzu and that we just walked into a kudzu fall minefield. It's a goddamn demon vine. What's doubly fun is kudzu isn't the only invasive east Asian plant that was invasive and introduced by people obsessed with cultivating foreign plants. Bamboo is also a common find in Mississippi where you'll find it suddenly overgrowing a pine or deciduous forest. Because that state has environmental conditions close enough to like, Vietnam, or Japan, so this problem gets exacerbated because bamboo and kudzu loves the southeast environmentally.
I'm from southeast Tennessee, if you drive around this region and look off into the vines along the side of the road you'll see thousands of houses, trailers, and vehicles peaking out from the mass of Kudzu. You'll find patches where it bridges the space between trees, creating these blobs on the landscape that look remarkably alien in low light. It has irreparably damaged our ecosystem, but I'd still be sad if the vines that drape over the walls of Chattanooga and Red Bank disappeared tomorrow. It gives our cities character.
I guess I haven't paid attention to it in Chattanooga, but I went to nantahala river last month after not going for two years. I was borderline horrified by how it has completely taken over the valley. The take out spot to scout lesser wesser rapid is absolutely covered the side of the river and railing.
It kills all the native flora and fauna. You should not be sad if it disappears. If you want a native vine to drape over the walls, there’s many like Virginia creeper and passionflower that are native to Tennessee.
@@francestaylor9156 I absolutely agree that it's a detriment to our native environment, by every metric that is true... but let's be honest, we ain't getting rid of it any time soon. I think we should accept it has an invasive species with an interesting history and a remarkable impact on our landscape, and I think it's okay to appreciate the aesthetic of it where it does exist. I'm not encouraging its propagation, or discouraging the removal of it, all I'm doing is admitting that it defines what I consider my corner of the south to look like. I also love our native plants, and I support conservation efforts. I can believe both these things at the same time.
I’m from Mississippi and kudzu over here is treated as kind of a fact of life. Most people just accept kudzu and ignore it. I took a trip to the Smokey mountains and saw a giant patch of forest just covered in kudzu. It even climbed to the top of trees. Kind of scared me as a kid
Diddo that my friend I’m from South Mississippi and we basically don’t even fight it anymore we just “maintain” it. Trim it and keep it maintained and that’s all you can do. One month of no maintenance and then you’ve lost your property to kudzu.
living in alabama i grew up surrounded by kudzu everywhere i went, but i have this vivid memory of specifically whenever we’d go to one specific walmart there was this HUGE cliff of it that stretched all the way down that highway that led to the walmart, and i was never told of the dangers or that it would snatch me up so i wasn’t ever afraid of it, i just found it so cool and always wanted to climb it but of course i never did. even now when we drive by that huge space of kudzu i get all nostalgic and honestly i can’t ever see myself being afraid of it, yeah it overtaking abandoned buildings is pretty spooky but there’s something so interesting about how stubborn of a vine it is that i just love
“I've always been a creeper. Violetta says I creep like the kudzu vines that are slowly but surely strangling our Dixie.” - Gilbert Dauterive, “King of the Hill”
I found a scrawny stray kitten by the kudzu patch in my neighborhood after a few weeks of storms. To this day we call her Kudzu Patch Kitty (like Cabbage Patch Kids) at times. Easily the sweetest cat I've had, and I've had mostly sweet cats.
This video has hit me so hard. Traveling with my grandfather through Mississippi he would always talk about Kudzu, growing up poor, and the same type of stories Isaiah talks about here. Nostalgia. That’s an incredible way to think about it.
As an Australian I had absolutely no idea of the scale of Kudzu infestation in the south eastern US. Also as an Australian (particularly a Queenslander), I can absolutely sympathise with communities having to deal with the consequences of the introduction of an invasive species which was supposed to be a boon to local agriculture. Glad to see you guys are finding some productive uses for Kudzu
Pretty sure theres a giant tree behind my grandparents house, like a the-house-is-fucked-if-it-falls-down big and this vine has been trying to climb the tree for years and my grandparents keep chopping some of it off and then it grows back and then cutting it off again for years
Tbh I think it’s kinda beautiful that people took something that could be interpreted as a tragedy and turned it into medicine, sustainable resources, stories, art, food, etc
Being someone who lives in the south, I can definitely confirm that this stuff is absolutely everywhere and annoying, but yes, the flowers do smell like Welch’s Grape Juice so I sometimes let it slide.
People who don't understand this episode probably aren't familiar with the American South... This stuff is freaky. When you're driving along and see entire hills and fields covered in this stuff you've heard legends of, it feels effectively monstrous. I feel powerless in the face of quiet nature in those moments.
In my downtown, there was an old house that was built and stood for years. It was swallowed entirely by Kudzu. I remember driving past it as a kid, and I was always in awe at the sight. Right outside the country club in my town, there is a gigantic wall of kudzu, I always think how it looks like a jungle! Oh! In my backyard as a kid, we had a ton of woods, I'd go in every day and play and explore, I remember playing in the kudzu for hours. Just being fascinated by the growth. It really does climb a mile a minute. What a plant. When I was in college, I remember seeing beautiful artwork about Kudzu. It's fierce but beautiful to me.
helen's library has a swath of kudzu growing right behind it, so when i was little i was fascinated by that vine with grape-scented flowers, huge leaves, and fuzzy shoots that never harboured as many bugs as the rest of the woods did. i remember walking right into the thicket feeling like i was in a fairytale because it was so exotic, and i think i even laid down on a spot where the vines were so dense they could support my weight. it's the definition of a noxious weed but i do appreciate getting to experience it more as a gentle giant instead of a smothering blight, because in the end, it's just a plant taking advantage of what it sees as perfect conditions.
💙🙌🏻 repent all have sinned and fallen short!!❤️🔥❤♥️ ❤️❤️❤️🙏❤️✝️
I live in the Mid-Cities area of Texas. This stuff is everywhere. I've been to houses that are in disrepair due to negligence from the home owners (oftentimes due to old age but not always) and this stuff absolutely covers entire sides of the home, fences covered in vines, the grass gets overtaken by it and trees get covered by it. Usually not all of those things at once but I have seen it happen. One house I maintain the termite protection on had gone about 5 years without any pruning being done to the vegetation around her home. I literally couldn't open her gate because Kudzu was holding it closed and just a year prior it was covered but not so bad it couldn't be torn.
A neighbor directly behind my house planted a Japanese vine plant with pretty purple flowers with heart shaped leaves. 20 years later, the neighbor has moved away and the new people have completely graveled their yard. My yard has this damn vine STILL. No matter how many 30 ft long ropey vines I pull out it always comes back. The leaves from the vine can sprout roots, and an inch of the vine will sprout roots. Its crazy, like an alien from another planet.
at least you know it is from Japan, and what do people say about Japan... something like "Japan is like another world" similar thing with Australia too
as a little kid i had this recurring nightmare about a vine that grew fast enough to cover people. i didn't see or learn about kudzu until much later, but i can understand the horror stories that emerged. there's something indescribably unsettling about climbing plants
There really is. Even nom-invasive plants like Virginia Creeper can get, well, creepy in large amounts. And kudzu is just SO voracious it turns trees into great lumbering ghosts.
i remember being taught it was originaly brought for crop use, no natural predators, then japanese beetles were brought to eat it and the beetles found all of our plants MUCH tastier.
When I lived in Lynchburg and worked in Big Island (on the James River) I would go up US501 every morning, crossing the ridge at Eagle Eyrie where a power line crossed US501. There was Kudzu on the NE side climbing across on the power line. In the fall it would be almost completely across, then winter weather would set in and it would die back. In the spring the strands would once again begin the crossing. In the 8 years I was there, each year it seemed to get a little further across.
It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever... until you are dead.
For a while I couldn't quite fathom why I enjoyed watching you speak about weeds, cheese, and things of sort much more than I would other creators on topics that are seemingly more interesting. I think I'm able to grasp it now. You have a unique way to accentuate the relevance of the subjects you're covering. When you tell us about the place you grew up, the stories your grandfather used to tell you, it adds a layer of familiarity to the whole discourse. You're videos aren't a compilation of info, they have your own personal feeling intertwined to the script. That is what I think defines your talent as a spokesperson. You're not trying to be someone you are not, and also not concealing who you truly are. I've seen this channel grow exponentially with all the attention it deserves, and we the audience will be here to listen for as long as you have stories to tell us❤
“And if there’s one thing I know about the people around it, it’s that much like the plant itself, they’re pretty resilient.” As a fellow southerner and East Tennesseean, that made my heart smile :)
i’ve had good experiences with kudzu. at the last house i lived at it had overtaken over half of the yard, and there was this old beautiful tree that it had overtaken in the summer of the year i moved in. i lived there through the winter and the kudzu died, and in the spring as it started to grow back it began to grow up the tree, i cut it back a few times and finally i very kindly asked it to leave the tree alone. i referenced other places that i was happy to have it overtake, but just that the tree was so old and deserved to live too, as well as the kudzu. it didn’t attempt to grow up it again and didn’t through the whole summer
The most unbelievable part of The Walking Dead was that Atlanta wasn’t completely covered in Kudzu after the collapse of the government.
The real reason the group migrated to Virginia in s5; all along, it was to escape the kudzu 😱😱😱
The leaves are supposed to be edible like spinach. In places it grows like that, it would be a good emergency food source.
@@purpleoctopie7722brother Va is more kudzu than land
Someone make a horror game/movie/book right now where the threat is the kudzu and you have to escape, but eventually it surrounds you and you just pray it happens quick
Everyone is surprised that he's making a video on just a random plant, but you all should have known that he'd find a way to portray it as an eldritch monster.

As someone who lives in the south, i can confirm that it is EVERYWHERE
it's basically the textbook definition of "invasive species"
Lol yeah, the beginning clip looks exactly like my local cracker barrel
even here in the midwest it isnt great lol. ive seen plenty of houses and buildings be completely consumed by it.
@@dbullets3664 Prosecute the vines
I killed an acre of kudzu in about 6 weeks. Here's how:
I went to the florist desk at my local supermarket and acquired six of the little vials which get filled with water and attached to the bottom of a single rose, so it will stay fresh until you get it home.

THATS SO EVIL OMG

Psalm 22 "My God My God why have you forsaken me?.... bulls of bashan surround me they pierce my hands and feet.... they cast lots for my garments... "“He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
“let the Lord rescue him.(R)
Let him deliver him,(S)
since he delights(T) in him.” "I am poured out like water" etc like with other passages in the psalms, genesis, (including theophany appearances in the torah) Isaiah, Zechariah, Daniel, Proverbs etc are considered messianic in rabbinic Judaism as the suffering servant messiah Ben Joseph, and to Christianity as Yeshua, Jesus bless you ❤
Edit: To expand on this is of course Isaiah 53 where you have the servant being crushed by God as an offering for sin for others, who dies and sees life and his seed afterwards, who dies with thieves and in a rich man's tomb, and who was despised and rejected, so why there is a common view of two messiahs, Ben yosef and Ben David, one messiah as the suffering servant and another as the conqueror who sets up the kingdom.
💙🙌🏻 repent all have sinned and fallen short!!❤️🔥❤♥️

And they've even gotten more goats since!
And the kudzu is still EVERYWHERE

As a kid in the 80s and 90s my first memory of Kudzu, was a card in the game "Magic the Gathering", it was a card with the effect, "Destroy target land". I saw a big patch of it in a ravine/forest one day as a probably 9 year old kid, asked my dad what it was because it covered everything. He told me it was called Kudzu, I then told him about that Magic playing card, and he said "Yep that's about what it does".

Also people aren’t outside enough or involved enough with their surrounding environment they probably have no clue what kind of plants and trees are normal around them
Pure eldritch horror
I'm in the Midwest. All I want is to work in state parks. I am a veteran drone pilot and grow indigenous plants of the Midwest and spread the seeds everywhere responsible.
I’ve helped plant native plants here in so cal at a nature preserve. We can all make a little bit of a difference and help keep native plants alive and keep animals alive too.
I'm in IPM, and what you do is literally the frontline. Great job. Do you use glyphosate, and if so, is the kudzu pretty resistant?
Ironically, drinking Kudzu root helps with alcohol- and drug abuse-related depression.
A plant taking stuff over is a sign of vibrant life
@@pyropulseIXXI not this plant. I mean... it's what the video is about 😂
Not to mention those pink slug algae things popping up in canals and riversides
A shame
That's horrible
reminds me of how a lot of african tree species got introduced to the Hawaiian islands and out competed the indigenous species, I remember when I was on a helicopter tour over Kawaii the pilot pointed it out to my group
Same problem in Hawaii
This is super interesting, thank you! My grandpa was on a team of 4 people that introduced kudzu to their farms in Auburn, AL. I don’t tell that story much, I’ve had people get mad enough to try and fight me in bars after bringing that up.
Other plants: needs specific conditions to grow properly, you know like any other normal plant
Kudzu: THE ONLY THING HOLDING ME BACK IS THE WORLD ITSELF.
The only thing that can hold kudzu back us hungry people. The plant is nutritious and tasty!
The warmer It gets the more north it will go.
But will it grow on Mars?
Normal plants: sunlight, water, perfect soil, no insects-
Kadzu: grow on earth (optional)
except from it's native origin aparently, lmao I kinda have to laugh at us incomptence at dealing with the problem.
No.
Haha that can happen even in NC
Fallin' Through The Kudzu ought to me a song about life in Alabama.
That’s insane!!!
This is probably the origin of the myth of kudzu "eating" people, because people would disappear into seemingly solid ground covered by kudzu.
@WEAREALLJUSTMEAT
Fellow sewer technician here.
Yes literally!
Cool enough, you can actually use it as a sustainable and renewable source of grazing 'feed', as long as you take precautions to keep it from spreading outside of the designated areas. Specifically BECAUSE it spreads so fast.
In Virginia and Kentucky they release goats to control it.
When I was a little girl, I stood on the back porch of my friends trailer. I felt something on my ankle, to look down and literally see the kudju twirling itself slowly around my leg. This is why we released goats. Lol

All this means is the animals that would eat it aren't going to want to live around it due to those properties, especially the last one because it makes them vulnerable to their natural predators. No wild animal is going to travel for food more than it has to, especially not when it will put them in more harm.

Everytime my grandparents in Mississippi built a new house, kudzu ate the old one. This happened twice.
I'm so sorry. That must be heartwrenching. The way you wrote this was beautifully sad.
Granma without a d.. I sure hope she's without a d!
Omg I know a place like that in my home town, just swallowed up by it. It used to scare me as a kid and I had nightmares about getting lost in it.
Dude no one is reading this
As an ecologist, this is really awesome to see.

@@deathpyre42 Are you talking about Gobo burdock root? They are not Kudzu.
Triffids! Love it!
Why did you qualify your statement with “As an Asian American “. Would your statement have less value if you weren’t Asian?
I find this super interesting because I remember a few years ago there was a tapioca/boba shortage. I wonder if it can be used as a substitute?
@@MasteredMagic kudzu is native to East Asia. I think dude was implying his family has eaten them for years as they were local to them in the old country.
As someone from North Carolina THANK YOU for talking about this cancerous vine. The entire mountains are covered in this plant.
If less land was in the hands of corporations , absentee landowners and the Federal government , you wouldn't have that problem . Kudzu is easily managed by an attentive and persistent landowner
I’m in SC. I had a great-aunt that said once “if cars ran on Kudzu, then we’d be set.” If only 😂
I work as a land surveyor, and I absolutely hate this stuff. I once walked off a collapsed bridge because of kudzu. The bridge had fallen years ago but the kudzu was still growing in the general shape of where it was. So I assumed it was there, took a step, and fell 15 feet through the vines. Luckily the vines sort of caught me and the bridge was pretty short to begin with.
vietcong plant tactics 💀
Ah yes, thick enough to cover a massive hole, but not thick enough to support a human being. Absolute asshole of a plant.
I know of playgrounds I grew up with that got closed down and cordoned off because of kudzu overgrowth making it unsafe for children.

So basically your dad had you committing a crime destroying the environment because he was to stupid to just dig up the roots?

I took a bus ride to Alabama and saw the same thing. I recognized how terrifying it was without being told though.

That's really cool.
Yea im from the same general area, when i grew up in concord our backyard became this giant open pit of kudzu instead of what use to be a forest. Its in downtown concord near the food lion and would be perfect for testing that enzyme out:!
I'm right up the road in Gastonia and it's a really nice park lol if you still play pokemon go it's probably the best place in the area to go
I had always wondered why no one had really focused on creating herbicide or something that specifically targets kudzu.

Shucks, less plastic use in general should be a no-brainer position for anyone.
Plastic clothing is not only unsustainable, but completely ugly. I don't get how people don't see it.

I remember spending a winter purging all these vines from my immediate woods. That next summer was beautiful, screw those vines.
💙🙌🏻 repent all have sinned and fallen short!!❤️🔥❤♥️

Having grown up in the south, I forget that not everywhere is being gradually eaten by kudzu, lol.
As a Tennessean this video is my first time learning about this, although I’m certain I have seen it multiple times before not knowing what it was.
when i was little i used to love kudzu. the way it covered everything and made landscapes look like turbulent green oceans. i thought it was beautiful. i know how devestating it is now, but the beauty still lingers.
This is a major reason why California is strict on plant imports.
I've used arrowroot powder in baking and as a thickening agent for years. I didn't know the leaves or flowers were useful, I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the video.
I remember parking my car, in 2001, leaving for a few hours, then seeing those vines wrapped around the antennae.
FL Gulf coast resident here, thank you for your efforts. Our state is beautiful and deserves to be maintained.

Yep. Welcome to the South.
Killer Bees are the devil incarnate.
I'm not far from Chattanooga and I agree... except for the part of being saddened if it disappeared. I want it gone 😅😂.
It kills all the native flora and fauna. You should not be sad if it disappears. If you want a native vine to drape over the walls, there’s many like Virginia creeper and passionflower that are native to Tennessee.
@@francestaylor9156i miss Virginia Creepers
Yeah. Ever been up round Yazoo City? It’s about like that there. Just in the hills past the delta, you can’t see a lick of brown in the trees.
Diddo that my friend I’m from South Mississippi and we basically don’t even fight it anymore we just “maintain” it. Trim it and keep it maintained and that’s all you can do. One month of no maintenance and then you’ve lost your property to kudzu.

This video has hit me so hard. Traveling with my grandfather through Mississippi he would always talk about Kudzu, growing up poor, and the same type of stories Isaiah talks about here. Nostalgia. That’s an incredible way to think about it.
"Thank you so much for watching the ad"
me, who just skipped it: 😢
Im sorry Wendigoon
As an Australian I had absolutely no idea of the scale of Kudzu infestation in the south eastern US. Also as an Australian (particularly a Queenslander), I can absolutely sympathise with communities having to deal with the consequences of the introduction of an invasive species which was supposed to be a boon to local agriculture. Glad to see you guys are finding some productive uses for Kudzu
Pretty sure theres a giant tree behind my grandparents house, like a the-house-is-fucked-if-it-falls-down big and this vine has been trying to climb the tree for years and my grandparents keep chopping some of it off and then it grows back and then cutting it off again for years
Cane toads are coming
If it's not kudzu, it's fire ants.
How's that toad situation going by the way? Any improvements in the last 20 years?
Fellow Aussie here. Have you heard about cane toad leather?
Tbh I think it’s kinda beautiful that people took something that could be interpreted as a tragedy and turned it into medicine, sustainable resources, stories, art, food, etc
girl that's what the video is about.
@@kierandavis5884girl, they just said it was beautiful.
Being someone who lives in the south, I can definitely confirm that this stuff is absolutely everywhere and annoying, but yes, the flowers do smell like Welch’s Grape Juice so I sometimes let it slide.
You leave home. You come back. Everything you held dear is now kudzu. Your Wife. Your Children. Your dog. All is kudzu.
Same vines are always so pretty to me!!
kudzu folk horror was NOT on my bingo card for this year and I’m so here for it
Psalm 22 "My God My God why have you forsaken me?.... bulls of bashan surround me they pierce my hands and feet.... they cast lots for my garments...
💙🙌🏻 repent all have sinned and fallen short!!❤️🔥❤♥️

"Free Space?"
"The Ruins" (2008) film might be something that interests you then.
And even then it will continue to march forward
Time to send Reese back in time to stop it.
I've seen this channel grow exponentially with all the attention it deserves, and we the audience will be here to listen for as long as you have stories to tell us❤
I think you hit the nail on the head for why I like the dude.
