Best tutorial of FFR I’ve seen yet - thank you
Thanks so much 🙏 glad you enjoyed it. 😉
My goodness! This video is perfect. Thank you so much bc this video literally addresses everything that I need to know!!
Awesome thanks for the comment 👍
Very clear. Helped me a lot. I capped my FPS at 30FPS. 45FPS was too high for all situations. RTX 3080, Reverb G2, i7 10700k running at 3.8GHz. Now running without Motion Reprojection or DLSS. I think my problem was that I was unhappy with the terrain and I was chasing a sharper image. I tried the Google earth mapping mod and that cured it for me. It’s not perfect, but it’s a lot sharper and thus saved me another fruitless quest to improve the way the terrain looks, which usually lead to my graphics card giving up the struggle.
There’s no silver bullet to this quest to obtain the best graphics without killing the frame rate but I think for my PC I’m just about there. It’s thanks to people like you that I can now relax and enjoy the flight. 🎉👍🏻
Hey thanks for the comment glad the video helped you and yes you are right there is no perfect settings for everyone it's all a give and take so it's up to the simmer what you are willing to compromise.
Most complete and clear tutorial I have ever seen about this topic...thanks a lot !
Very welcome thanks for the comment
hooly smokes, the best tutorial I've ever see, and i've seen A LOT !! thx
Your welcome thanks for the comment .
I put my old Reverb gen 1 away and was using the quest 2, followed this after dusting down my reverb and dumbed down some settings and....wow what a difference. Reverb gen 1 has become my new (old) fav headset again after following this vid, thanks mate, new sub is the least I can do.
Hey Tony thanks so much for the sub 😀 I'm glad you dusted off the old g1 and brought her back to life . Im happy this helped you
@@2020fsers One year later, and my HP Reverb G1 (which had mostly sat idle due to death of elders in the family) is still the best headset I've ever had and kicking ass even harder with this tutorial. You're still earning subs off this video now. ;) Thanks much for all the fine work you've done, Sir!
@DatahawkAviation thank you 😊 🙏
@@2020fsers No, THANK YOU for all the work you've done. I'm going to look and see if you've done more current ones as well!
@DatahawkAviation oh yes i have done an ultimate vr guide
Wow thank you man !! That was the best vr tutorial i saw
Awesome thanks for the comment
Super helpful! I recently purchased a Meta Quest 3, so I can play iRacing in VR. To my surprise, the image quality was/is horrible. Your video is just what I needed to learn about the world of OpenXR.
awesome i have also made a vr guide that may help you more the video is in the vr playlist on the main page .. Thanks for the comment
Thanks so much.... perfectly explained and lots of new ideas...well done!!
Your welcome thank you for the comment
Thanks! I don't play MSFS but I do play Project Wingman which can be quite demanding as well and this helped me maintain 90fps without needing motion reprojection enabled while still getting really good image quality (looks like 2600x2600 per eye) on my HP Reverb G2.

Excellent tutorial never seen before!
Hey thanks for the comment
Finally a tutorial that explains everything in a simple to understand format. Would anyone know if DCS uses any post processing that would need to be turned off and how one would do that if necessary?
Hey thanks for the comment 😀 not sure about dcs but im.sure someone will chime in.
Excellent explanation 👌
Thank you👍
Very welcome thank you for posting
What I found on mipmap bias:
"A positive bias makes a Texture appear extra blurry, while a negative bias sharpens the Texture. Note that using large negative bias can reduce performance, so it's not recommended to use more than -0.5 negative bias. In most cases better sharpening of the Texture can be achieved by using anisotropic filtering."
Might be worth testing... maybe?
I've tried it and see no difference maybe with a higher res headset it makes a difference but not for me at least. I thought it could help with aliasing in the distance but I couldn't see a change . Thanks for sharing this info .
Great primer on OpenXr... Thanks!
Hey thank you for the comment your welcome 🙏
This video and another one gave me the best result for my pc (i9-12900 + 32Gb RAM + RTX 3080Ti 12Gb) - I know have a comfortable 35 - 40 fps! Happy pilot :)
That's very good news thanks for posting
@@2020fsers No worries it really did help so why not mention it. Do you have another video that relates these settings to the settings in FS2020 (Low, Medium,High and Ultra)?
Yes if you haven't seen this one is good ruclips.net/video/-q6ZJIUnoqg/видео.html also check on our main page and go to the msfs2020 fixes playlist all of the fix videos are there
WOW !!!!Well pleased.
Thank you 😊
Thank you for this tutorial :)
Very welcome glad it helped you 😀
Thank you very much for this Video!
Your welcome my new vr guide will be out soon.
Pro Tip: When I use ASW to lock at 30 frames I also use Riviera statistics tuner
to cap at one frame higher so at 31. "it doesn't seem to work as well if you use Nvidia fps lock settings"
If you do this and you are using the Oculus tray tool you can go down to visual HUD and click performance. Once doing so you will notice the FPS graph will be more of a flat smooth line and have FPS fluctuations that go higher than 30 rather than dip lower than 30. And smoothness is the goal every little bit helps with this game.
Also this works if you are locking it at 18 or 45 FPS just cap one higher then your ASW Target lock. Try it out and let others know if it works for you. 😉
Thanks for posting this info 👍
Excellent tutorial for an amazing software
Thank you after the new update I will redo the tutorial thanks for the comment 😀
I really like your videos, pretty good explanatory. One question though, is there a way to adjust the openxr toolkit settings without wearing the headset? On screen would be much easier!
hey thanks for the comment ... at the moment i dont think that you can adjust anything unless you are in vr .
Great work.
Thank you 😊
Great video...
Thanks im.in the process of making the new updated version and I have some new tweaks in there it should be good .
3070 + 10700 + Valve Index. Standard settings: SteamVR 150%, MSFS 100%, MSFS mostly on medium/high VR settings
Flying around Innsbruck at low altitude (less than 1000ft from terrain) with DC Designs F-14 - fps outside plane - 48-53, inside - 37-43. High altitude (+30k) outside - 55-60 fps).
Trees look pretty good with shadows medium/medium-high. Overall terrain looks pretty awesome and clear.
- Just enabling OpenXr (with scalers and foveated rendering off) brings something slightly-weird in forests, especially at long distance. Looks like a little bit blurred.
I immediately had a feeling, like I need to clean my lenses, and my eyes started to feel a little strain, like something is between me and landscape. Especiallly at distances around 3-5 NM.
- NIS and FSR scalers with 80% and sharpness 25% (if sharpness higher it becomes edgy) gives 45-55 fps inside (very good) but... you can't enjoy scenery anymore. Especially bad for me was NIS (this is strange, right? I thought it will be in reverse). FSR - usable, but don't come lower than 3000ft. And don't even look at HUD. And SHIMMERING as hell.
- Foveated rendering gives better picture and fps around 42-48 inside ( +20%). At least you can look at HUD without vomiting. But sadly, scenery becomes not-enjoyable, but I'm not sure, is it because of foveated rendering or just because of using OpenXr.
>So, my results: yes, performance +15% +20%, but I will not use it with Index, 'cause I like low-altitude scenery-gaping flight.
Thanks for posting your results 👍
Thanks for posting your specs!
He is a special one✨
Thanks for the comment

Thank you 😊
Great tutorial! Does this work for Quest 2? I use the ocukus app, but would I be better off using steam VR? I don’t have the WMR downloaded, but would that work with the oculus app settings the same way as steam vr settings or is WMR strictly when using steam VR?
Hey thank for the comment . Yes this does work with quest 2 but I am not sure of the settings for the quest app but there are several people in the comments that have the quest 2 and have posted results and settings I suggest start there or shoot one of them a question . Sorry I can't be of better help. Thanks to the great community for sharing their info we can all be a little wiser 😀
Nice! Can you make a video for DCS World?
No sorry I don't use dcs
Hero! Thank you!
Your welcome thanks for the comment
@@2020fsers you've mastered this, now here's one, what's the best/closest way to capture what we see through our headsets? I will be streaming VR and I hate the thought of viewers missing big chunks of what I see.. So far open VR capture on streamlabs using index 16:9 works well however, it does lose some of the full view
I'm not to sure I don't use vr to make vids and I've never recorded on it other than using the mirror but for some reason on mine the mirror is not good quality even if I change the settings in the wmr .
I thinknif you record vr viewers will always miss a little bit due to your field of view is much bigger in vr
@@2020fsers found a happy medium! Hopefully someday it'll be a possibility for viewers to see exactly what we do in the headset
Thank you for another great video. Can you make a new one with the newest version including CAS? I use this to configure my Iracing vr and the quest. I don’t use windows mixed reality or steam. Do I have to make extra settings to ex. oculus ODT?
Hey yes that's the next video I am working on .. I don't use oculus so I can do much on that end .
Great video. Very, very informative.
The only question I have is why you set the resolution in SteamVR? My understanding is SteamVR isn't used with OpenXR.
Hey thanks for the comment . Steam is used if you are using a steam headset like the valve index , pimax .
What about the Reverb G2? It is both wmr and steamvr so is it necessary to still set the steamvr resolution when launching under openxr? So many vr layers to maintain and keep track of
Ok if you have steam version of msfs and your openxr is set to steamvr in the developer options in steam then the wmr is not in play still set the wmr to 100 in case but it shouldn't affect it you only need to set steam to 100 resolution.
Thank you for share this, best video on the youtube, there is so mang fucing wired people, that dont know what they talk about
Thank you 😊 I made a new video for all the new features if your interested ruclips.net/video/leD7pwMMFug/видео.html
@@2020fsers Yes, shure, i wil have a look on that one to, i like the way you exsplain it, and how you make us understand this. Its pretty new for me with VR. So this save me much pain of tweaking alone. i seen many other films, that ends up in a distaster :)

Lol yeah i hear that 🤣 I'm happy it made a difference for you . I too think the new gpu prices are insane.
Great video, would you still use this in the Varjo headset?
Yes it is still applicable in the varjo . I am putting together the new ultimate vr guide should be out in a couple days .
Great video but for some reason I don't have the same menu options as you do. I am on the same version. I do not have horizontal offset, horizontal scale, vertical offset, or lockmotion reprojection
Ok make in the menu menu lol that you turn on the advanced setting or expert setting I forget what is says and that should open up the other settings for the . Thanks for the comment 👍
Great tutorial. I'm having one minor issue: Open XR toolkit menu does not open in VR mode when I hit the CTRL F2 keys. Any clues on this. I had no issues with previous version of the Open XR Toolkit.
Are you also loaded into msfs ? If so check your modifiers in the companion app. Make sure it didn't get switched . Thanks for the comment
I have the exact same issue, I've never been able to see the menu since the original open xrkit.
@@user-zt1er1uj6ino problem resolved one day after Update 9. Not sure what I did !!
Great tutorial, but I am still unable to get VR mode enabled. I installed openXR and the OpenXR Tools for Windows Mixed Reality. Managed to get the link working on my brand-new Meta Quest 3, I can see the main window but when I click VR Mode, I get a "No headset detected", even though the desktop is already been shown in my Quest 3. What am I doing wrong? For reference, I play MSFS via Xbox Games Ultimate on PC, not Steam.
I'm not sure about quest I know there may be more you need to do. You can email mat the dev of the openxr toolkit and maybe he can give you some options
"The mipmap bias of the Texture. A positive bias makes a Texture appear extra blurry, while a negative bias sharpens the Texture. Note that using large negative bias can reduce performance, so it's not recommended to use more than -0.5 negative bias."
Ok thanks for the info unfortunately I don't think you can select a value in the toolkit.
Great video! Thanks. I’ve recently install openXr toolkit and have a quest 2. I can’t get the menu to appear in the googles? I can see the countdown to press CTRL F2 but when I do nothing happens?
Ok the quest may need an additional code added to get openxr to recognize I'm not sure but that's what I've been told what you can do is email the developer and he should be able to direct you.
Thanks for the comment
Thanks for the reply. One other question do you need MS openxr mixed reality installed if your using steam Vr?
No you do not steam has its own openxr program running.
After the third restart the menu now opens. I only needed it to apply "over-prediction reduction" because my G2 registers every pulse beat. It's so sad that you need multiple third-party applications to have an enjoyable VR experience. Why can't headset manufacturers provide proper software? (rhetorical question) Have "over-prediction reduction" set to -70 and it's now a much quieter experience.
Awesome thanks for the update
Is there any way to Permently Lower the Brightness for the HP Reverb G2 for all Games? Answer has not yet been found, Yes I already downloaded OVR in Steam, Brightness stuff doesn't work for the HP Reverb G2 Sadly. Its Beyond Dumb it isn't just an option in Windows. I have the Brightness All the way Down & Dark Mode on all my TV's, Monitors, & Phone but a VR Headset with Lenses Millimeters away from my eyes Has to be Blindingly Bright & Cause Unnecessary Eye strain because Windows Couldn't just add simple options in a Menu for their headsets. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!
I Think It's ridiculous this isn't an option in WMR Software to Lower Screen Brightness & Adding Blue light filter. How can I lower my Screen Brightness? I need to, using the HP Reverb G2 with current brightness & no bluelight filter I get major eye strain & it litterly dialates my eyes for hours. Hasn't been an issue with headsets that Can Lower Brightness & BL Filter on, I'm not gonna ware sunglasses in my Headset either that sounds Very Uncomfortable Also I have a 3D printed Faceplate that fits my face better then stock so that isn't an option anyways.
Unfortunately I don't think therenisna setting to blanket the brightness setting. In the openxr toolkit you can adjust the brightness but only for supported games. Some games may need open composite to use the toolkit.
Well This is a great tutorial....the best as I know for now. I've the steam version and in steamvr my image is really terrible..even bij startup steamvr. Now I go to openxr now the question do I have to put in the windeows mixed reality the openxr runtime as active? I put on active but if I want to open vr in the oculus quest 2 msfs2020 say ther is no headset detected
No you do not leave it as steam for your openxr because that's what oculus runs on . Mixed reality in windows is only for mixed reality headsets like the hp reverb g2
Thanks for the comment
@@2020fsers Ah ok so now to figure it out how it works on oculus quest 2
Once you have the companion app downloaded it should say at the top if it's active
Thank you... Finaly I get msfs2020 in vr with 68 FPS. but my resolution is by 100% 1872x1888... how can I improve that? I've amd ryzen 9, RTX 3070TI 8gb, 16GB Internal memory.
Hi!!!
I use the "Quest 2" for MSFS 2020 and ended up buying the Leap Motion so I can use my hands on the controls. Was it foolish to purchase the Leap Motion? hand-orange-covering-eyes
I tried using the OpenXR Toolkit, but was unsuccessful. face-turquoise-covering-eyes
In Quest 3, does leap Motion help with hand tracking or is it already native is sufficient?
Hugs from Brazil!!!
Sorry for theblate reply . The leap motion I have and I don't use it . To much of a headache it's mainly for developers. The quest 3 should have native had tracking .
Thx for video
my pc is belong to WW2 , gtx 970 , i5 3470 , 8 gig ram & i get about 130 fps in flat version of RE7 but when i try praydog mod with link cable and quest 2 it's awful, something like 20 fps . Is it normal which fps drop about 6 times in vr ?
It's not necessarily normal that your FPS drops that much. But it is normal that it draws a much bigger demand on the GP. U, because it's now gotta render your 3D space everything around you so you will see A G PU. Load increase and if your GPU isn't up to the task you will get a frame drop.
Is that 100% setting on windows mixed reality the same as setting resolution in the oculus app if you have a quest for example?
I would say yes . I don't haveva quest but I assume it's the same .
@@2020fsers thanks, I think it must be.
I'm new at VR but pretty handy with PC's and tech. I do have a few questions...all relate to using a Pimax 8KX. It's my only VR headset. Kinda confused how Pitools, Steam, SteamVR, WMR, OpenXR all hang together and the order they need to be used to successfully get VR working in MSFS each time I want to use it.
- Where does Pitools fit into this? Does that force me into Steam rather than WMR?
- When you started MSFS, where does it need to be started from? Desktop Shortcut, Steam, WMR, Pitools ??
- In the OpenXR Appearance tab, you left FOV at 100% (98.3deg). What is the setting here for pimax?
- Lastly, any chance you can share your Pimax OpenXR settings?
That's it. Really really good video, best I've seen on the topic and I've seen PLENTY!! You have a new Subscriber, with the bell and all! lol
Cheers, Michael
Hey thanks for the comment I also have a pimax 8kx but unfortunately indid realize my ipd is smaller that the hmd can go so it's not as clear as it should be so I never use it but I can help you with the settings . Funny I was using the 8kx last night. Ok so here's the scoop 1st resolution any resolution I set in the pi tool and I use 1. On resolution then I also set to normal mode. If using small mode I go to 1.25 on the resolution. The box parallel projection is best for the sim.but uses more gpu or turn off and use the for hack setting in the openxr tool but it's not perfect I still think the image is better using the parallel projection.. you should not be using wmr at all with pimax. So saying that in the steam settings turn on advanced and then go down and make sure that steam is set as your openxr. If not select the button to make it the choice. Now your openxr runs through steam. Next don't touch the resolution in steam or in msfs. Also make sure any changes to the resolution in the pitool as well as for in pi tool to also restart steam. All scaling will be done in the openxrtoolkit inside the sim. For setting inthe openxrtoolkit leave on 100. If for some reason your resolution is too high the steam app will stall to enter the sim. That is a problem because you can't scale the resolution in the openxrtoolkit until in the sim so work around is turn down the resolution a lot in steam before entering vr then once in vr open the toolkit. Next sce the image down to 70 or 60% then exit vr. The go back to steam turn the resolution back to 100 reenter vr and now it should not freeze now you can adjust the scaling higher little by little exiting g vr on each change reenter and test until you get to the point of no return then scale it back again to the setting that was best and you are all set to go. Hope this helps please let me know and check-out the Facebook group
Thanks also for the sub sorry I got caught up in my response lol 😆
@@2020fsers thanks so much! How about the FOV setting? And do I run MSFS from within Steam or from Desktop (or pitools)?
Fov leave at 100. If you have the store version start msfs from desktop if steam version start in steam.
@@2020fsers excellent, thanks again. Do you have that patron thing?
Hello - I'm wondering if I should bother trying to use this as I have a Valve Index and do mostly sim racing....SteamVR seems to do a good job and the articles I've read say you don't need this if your using a native steam vr headset - but what doyou think 2020fs'ers ??????
Honestly, I try not to discourage anyone from trying things. Download it and try it I think it would be worth a try for you. You may like some of the other settings in there like post processing to where you can adjust a lot of your colors for individual games. But with a valve index, you're probably not going to use any of the fixed foviated rendering settings And that's where this application shines.
@@2020fsers Thanks a lot for the reply....!
I like that you can disable it, so yeah, I'll give it a whirl - Thanks again! - Great turorial BTW - perfect blend of instruction withouth getting too deep in the weeds.. :)
Are you using an Oculus Quest 2 or an HP Reverb G2 for your headset?
I am using the g2.
Every time I hit Ctrl F2 in the sim, the Open XR menu appears, and then within a few seconds it fades away and I can't make any adjustments
You need to go all the way over to the last menu, and then you can adjust the time out.
Wich app I should open before starting FS? Oculus or SteamVR or both???
if you are using the steam version then yes steamvr but not sure if you need the oculus app running or not sorry
Anybody else been getting a lot of New Graphics artifacting in the last week or so? " mostly on the right eye" it's not the ASW prop artifacting. Also now aside from that if I choose to disable ASW the game pretty much slows to a stop in the vr headset yet on the 2d monitor everything is running smoothly and says 35 FPS. I'm on a Quest 2 with cable link and airlink it's happening with both instances I noticed that this graphical issue only seems to be happening with the PC VR. Not with Quest Standalone games or with 2D PC games. 🤔 I'm trying to narrow down between Hardware or software issue.
Solution: In Oculus debug tool under mobile ASW be sure to leave framerate Insurance default setting selected which is Auto. I guess I had decided to try it and had enabled framerate insurance very horrible experience I factory reset the quest trying to troubleshoot this and lost the ability to use it without being tied to Facebook.
Dumb question. After i set everything up do i have to always run openxr tool kit when i run ms flight in order for the setting to be there?
Not a dumb question and the answer is no you do not.
@2020 fs'ers After trying out the OPENXR toolkit, it does install and work without the need for The windows mixed reality openxr, as Oculus is running Openxr already. the Foveating circles appear and work with the Rift S, but the benefit in performance isnt that drastic or needed. With several difference tools tried this is what works best with the Rift S on MY system, your results may vary.
The Rift S has two different resolutions. on Quality its 1648-by-1776, and on Performance its 1504-by-1616. The best thing Ive tried, is running Oculus on Performance, and running the OTT at 1.4 supersampling and ASW OFF. this has a higher resolution in game of 2112 by 2272 stutter free and clear. This is better than even running the Oculus software in Quality,, and OTT at say 1.2 with ASW on. Performance mode in the Oculus software is doing something else other than reducing the resolution in the Headset. The Largest impact Ive seen on the stutters. is Make sure, do not ignore the option to prioritize the OVR server , Put that on HIGH in the OTT. this makes a HUGE difference in fluidity. I uninstalled the OPENXR toolkit as it didnt do much for the performance, and added too may artifacts on the Rift S. Also using the NIS scaling in the toolkit also added a Jello effect that was pretty sickening. The Brightness contrast, saturation tools I wish I had in the OTT though as those did work wonderfully.
Great hey thanks for posting this I'm sure it will help out someone . 🙂
Hey! Tldr...do you Have you tried trouble shooting with the quest 2 by any chance? Do you think it will be similar results since I'm using link and not air and therfore using the oculus app?
I find my vr performance really suffers anytime I inject this scaler in tandem with the mixed wr. I hVent tried the scaler by itself with the q2 but im going to try today if it will run. The oculus app does have its own run time priority setting that seems to cause issues when something else is set as the run time priority. And every time I try to use the mixed WR in conjuction with oculus and set is as priority it doesn't run right anyway.
When Openxr appears in MSFS it's right up in my left eye and it moves with the VR view when I turn my head. I can't disable the countdown in time. It is so frustrating!
Disable legacy view.
Hi, new vr user here. Three days with the hp rG2. I’m having a issue where if I run the open xr toolkit, I get a blue screen (appears to just be backlighting) in the headset. When I uninstall it, then it works. Are my msfs settings to high to start with? Wondering if I should reset to default in the simulator and then try to get the tools to work? Any advice would be much appreciated! Ryzen 7 5800, RX 6900XT, 32 g ram.
That's really strange so you are in the sim and you can see just fine in the headset but when you activate the tool menu you get a blue screen ? There may be an faq on the website about this not sure.
I don tunderstand how you have fmfs2020 listed in open xr, my box is empty
Does it show active at the top of the companion app?
Sorry for mi ignorance jajaja, this program is only useful for people playing in VR, or also for normal users?
No need to apologize .. Only for vr
thanks for the video, please help i have issue with the openxr /steamvr when i try mfs2020 pic go crazy shaking, when i un-install steamvr openxr work but now I can not play any other steamvr games
when i install steam the openxr runtime will not active, just got this headset it's a lot of work to get it up and runining
Thanks for the comment what headset do you have
I am using a iMac with bootcamp and a Logitech keyboard. Once in VR not able to hit ctrl f2 to open tool kit. Any ideas.
The way you say this sounds like you are unable to hit the ctrl f2 when in vr ? Why can't you press the keyboard when you are in vr ? Or are you saying once in vr when you press ctrl f2 the menu doesn't open?
Do you have to redo all these settings everytime you open MSFS? I feel like mine are resetting everytime I go into the SImulator.
no all my settings stay when i load back in.
Are you opening the game via Steam VR or Steam without VR?
Without steam I have the store version
hi bro, why i cannot find the fixed foveated setting in my menu? The advanced option is also enabled
In the menu option inside the toolkit you say you have the advanced menu turned on? That's strange
I have no option to enable experimental settings in the OpenXr Toolkit, help would be appreciated thanks in advance!
There is no experimental anymore .. go to the menu menu and turn on advanced settings .
Wich apps I have to keep open while flying in VR? After 3,5 weeks struggling still not be able to activate the Open XR Toolkit by pressing CTRL+F2. After installing the Open XR and Open XR Mixed Reality apps everthing looks so terrible in the virtual cockpit. Flickering, stuttering en tearing. And why is the Oculus seeing my USB 3.0 as 2.0 ???
You don't need any apps open in vr other than the mixed reality app. I would contact them about the quest there may be something else you need to do for that headset so go to the website and send them an email they are pretty responsive.
Should work for both the steam and non steam version of msfs, right?
Yes you are correct
I have a valve index and my copy of msfs is on steam so I was wondering of any of this would have any effect on a steam vr/valve index?
I also use a valve and works perfectly
First try looked pretty good but only 20 FPS. Tried to adjust but every time I bounced in and out of VR using Ctrl-Tab, the machine bogged down and I was getting 10 FPS and then 3 FPS. Honestly between WMR, Steam VR, OpenXR, Nvidea Settings and in-game, I probably have some conflicting settings. Been at this for 3 days straight. Appreciate the help. Oh, also, looks like it's out of Beta now.
Ok so are you using the steam version of msfs? Also are you using a g2? If so make sure you are using the wmr openxr and not steam. You can check this by going into steam menu turn on advanced options select developer and look right where it says openxr it should say wmr not steam if it says Steam change it when you open wmr for steam vr should populate a box that says fix this click that and it will change. Openxr developer you don't really need that open select latest open runtime at the top and you can select custom render scale and select 100 then close it . I find that closing the wmr for steam is best to Close each time you jump in and out of vr. This does take more time but seems to reset something . What are your system specs ?
@@2020fsers Thank you for your reply. When I Ctl-Tab in-game after changing settings, the DWM.exe process pegs the GPU to >90% so FPS gets hosed. I have a Legion Gaming Laptop with i7, RTX3060,16Gb. It's set to only use the Nvidia GPU w/latest driver. No hybrid mode. I stopped using the Steam VR because it CTDs constantly. Of all the combinations, my best results are just using WMR, no OpenXR and 70 render scaling. Might just be the best I can do with this system. I get about 25 FPS with the G2 Reverb.
Darn, well you tried . Maybe the limiting factor is that it's a laptop but i could be wrong.
@@2020fsers Actually, v1.1.3 just came out and that seems to have fixed the problem. I'm getting a solid 35 FPS now. Thanks!
Ok cool yes it just got release I still haven't downloaded yet
I have testet all the settings, but cannot make it work smooth. It always stutters, espeially when I look in the side window. I don't thing it is hardware related, because changing the render scales or changing in-game settings doesnt make the game performing smoother. On the high or low settings it goes with the same stutters.
Win 11 (latest updtes). CPU 13900kf, GPU 4090, RAM 32 DDR-5600, VR Reverb G2 V.2. OpenXR Toolkit, OpexXR devkit. Played with all the settings. Stutters. CPU and GPU are a bit undervolted.
are you getting stutters or screen tearing ? 2 different things
Why settings also steamVR if using openXR?
Steam vr is not used when using openxrtoolkit.
{Windows 11 (computer came with it) , 3080, HTC VIVE Pro Eye, Steam MSFS}
Followed along to the letter, but MSFS now says "No headset is detected." when I launched the sim at the 9:00 mark of the video... Not sure what I did wrong... Any suggestions?
If you're using the reverb G2 then turn the power off on the power unit and power it backup
@@2020fsers I'm using the HTC Vive Pro Eye headset, and figured out the Steam VR setting that was preventing MSFS from seeing the headset. I'm continuing with the video now, thanks!
Ok good 👌
My game freezes when loading to airport with dx12 enabled. I'm unable to enable foveated settings with a 6700xt in dx11. Any fix for that?
Huh I wasn't aware of that issue send the dev a email and see what he says he gets back quickly
i run openxr tools for windows and says me error communicating with mixed reality OpenXr service
Is there a button in the openxr tools for windows that says fix this if so press it. What headset are you using?
@@2020fsers ok thank that fix it
All this is fine, but nobody tells how to link the FS ".exe" file to the Pimax software. I don't think they use PiTool anymore. I just got the new Pimax Crystal and am stalled at that point. Does it self install by manually starting the program with the 3 add-on's running. I use the MS version of MSFS.
Ok you also need pimaxxr from guthub. I am actually editing now part 2 of the pimax series where I go over all the software and setup i known you don't want to wait so here is the link to the pimaxxr video.
ruclips.net/video/Z9hEx_wf-KU/видео.html
Your pitool should also.be running the other 2 do not
I’m having issues with the games not seeing the Pimax HMD. Can you help?
Ok they must be mixed reality games like msfs . Next pimax users I would contact the developer as he has some special tweaks for you as well as a code so you don't need to run steam to play msfs in vr if you have the store version.
9:38 No Menu comes up for me in VR Mode.
Go to your companion application and make sure that it says it's active if it says it's active and you have Microsoft flight simulator checked and the box at the bottom of the companion application then it should show the menu in VR once you're in Microsoft flight simulator
can you do a vid for version 1.2.2 please ?
Yes that is on the agenda I have I think 3 more videos to do and then the openxr and I'll specifically be going over vr in sim and in the toolkit and sharing all the info I have collected from people with different systems and the different options to start with on settings it should be pretty good .I hope 😆
I have downloaded the latest version but don't have an option for ffov any idea's?
Make sure experimental is check not sure if that needs to be done or not. If you still have the issue maybe uninstall and redownload and install. Worst case email the developer.
CTRL f2 Does not open the tool kit for me. I'm using V1.3.2. Ho do I get into it when the sim is running?
I found it! it only appears in the headset.
Yes it does lol 😆 glad you got it
Are you going to report on the "eye tracking" feature of the XR Tool Kit in MFS2020?
Sure as soon as it comes out. Of course I will need to do some testing .
Is VRS MSAA a setting from nvidia NIS?
What is vrs?
Hi.
Why on steamVR (or OpenXR toolkit) do I see people, with the same vr, who have the resolution with the largest digit on the left, and others with the largest digit on the right? I have 4312x5100 but I'm sure I've seen 5100x in the past...
Why does this happen?
The bigger number should always be on the right for the pimax 4312x5102 .
@@2020fsers i look pimax crystal with biggest number on the left. Same user, two different video. In first video biggest number onthe left, in second video (with same crystal) the biggest number is on the right
@andrealongobardi4294 not sure what to tell you I tried it myself all the way up to 8000 and still the same bigger number on right .
The only thing incan think of if they are using anamorphic scaling but I didn't think that was available on crystal.
The Alt-F2 interface does not open in DCS. Does this feature only work in MSFS?
you need to open the companion application and make sure that dcs is checked in the boxes at the bottom.
V1. 1.2 doesn't have enable experimental features.
no it does not all the experimental features are now standard . here is the new video ruclips.net/video/m0E_-UesZX0/видео.html
Openxrtoolkit won't start. It won't even show MSFS or any other Openxr game on my PC. It also doesn't show the log. The companion says that it is installed correctly... Any help would be appreciated. I am using Quest 2.
Did you try and open the menu while in vr in msfs ? If that doesn't work then reach out to mat the oculus may need a tweak to get it to register.
@@2020fsers I tried there is no response. Under the troubleshooting it says if no apps display at the bottom of the companion app that you don't have any compatible apps, but I have several that should be compatible. Who is Mat?
He is the developer.
I managed to to let the FFR mode appearing in the menu finally. Now the fps jumps from 15 to 30 wich is great but i get CPU bounds up till 60 sec wich makes it impossible to fly.
Does your fps jump with ffr off ?
Sounds like you may have also turned on motion reprojection
Make sure that is set to off in the toolkit
Keeping OpenXR at 100 and NIS at 80%? Thought I need to reduce OpenXR to 80% and leaving Toolkit NIS at 100%? What is the difference?
The difference is the nis is a scaling tool to upscale and add sharpening the openxr developer tool does not do that it can only scale down or up the resolution.
@@2020fsers so NIS only sensefull over 100%? Less than 100% NIS means downscale? I did not get it. I play with both sliders but do not know what I am doing.
Lol it's OK so let me explain. You want msfs and openxr developer tool at 100 % full scale resolution. Then you will let the nis tool do the scaling for you but But in this scaling tool you can't go above 100% full scale resolution if you push this over 100 then you will notice the resolution scale going down on the same scale as if you go below 100. So it doesn't matter which way you go up or down either way it will down scale the resolution then add sharpening with the sharpening option. Hope that makes sense .
Does this work with RIFT S?
Yes it does but contact the developer there are a couple other steps you need to take I believe.
I can't get openxr menu to open? do i close it or minimise it? also i have openxr tools for windows mixed reality open-minimised as per video.
Ok the openxr toolkit companion app you can close and the mixed reality openxr you can close . You must be in msfs then try and open the toolkit.
@@2020fsers I’ll close windows open Xr. I have game running. Will try again thx
Make sure you didn't change your hot keys in the companion app.
@@2020fsers thx for the info, I've seen tutorials that they adjust openxr from the game home screen, i can only get openxr to show in my meta quest 3 once actual in the cockpit and its unusable as so magnified. I was going through various settings and it oculus told me that i needed to assigned steam vr as my openxr source is that right?
As far as oculus I'm not to sure as to run steamvr or oculus so I would email Matt the developer about that . His email should be on the github page or the webpage to contact him. You are right you should be able to enter the menu on the home screen.
I am using the GA-2 (v1.2.1) version and there is no such setting as ''Fixed Foveated Rendering'' I also checked the other tabs to see if it maybe hidden there but no result. Should i find a older verion? Finally the OpenXR is opening now...
The ffr needs to be turned on in the menu of the open xrtoolkit in vr turn on advanced settings .
Cool thanks 😊
@@2020fsers I hope I do not sound stupid, but i still can not see the advanced setting in the menu.....
It should be in the very right menu that says menu I think . And it may say expert settings or advanced settings
Hi thank you for responding. I switched to advanced settings in two different menu tabs. Unfortunately FFR is still not in the menu. Mystery.
I dont have an "inner ring resolution" option.
Inner ring is always 100% you can only change the middle and outer resolution.
Hi do i have to install and use Steam VR with Open Xr . ? I can not open the menu on windows mix reality
if your sim is on steam then you will be using the steam version of openxr so no need to use the windows version make sure to set your resolution in steam
@@2020fsers thanks, but on windows mix reality the menu does not open with F1. F2 keys . What is wrong , ...?
@@2020fsers i am using the sim from microsoft store
Ok so if in store version you don't need steam open . Make sure that the openxr developer is active by going to the app tab to make sure it's active . Then once the sim is running then ctrl +f2
Final question please, i have Oculus Quest 2. Does it work with OpenXr tool kit . . .? If not which oculus should i get to enjoy MSFS on VR? Thanks
what if there is no checkbox for experimental settings?
There isn't anymore this is an old video . Open the menu for the openxr toolkit in vr and go to the menu menu and turn on expert settings
@@2020fsers yeah, I was just looking for fixed goveated rendering and found it. I managed to reduce gpu usage by another 10% (on top of whatever open composite/bypassing steam vr was already doing. Which already felt like a 10-20% improvement). This was in dirt rally 2.0 with a Lenovo explorer wmr and rtx2070 super.
So far I am super impressed with open composite and open xr toolkit. Amazing stuff. Essential for dirt rally 2.0 with its terrible optimization if not using an Oculus headset.
I mean I'm not sure if it works for zvery game ...
No it does not only openxr games. Also check the website and it will tell you what games its good for and also what games you need open composite to use the toolkit.
not sure what im doing wrong but when i hit the ctrl F2 key and nothing happens
Are you booted into msfs ? Before you try to enter the toolkit if not it won't work .
@@2020fsers So I figured it out it was a completely different window that needed to be opened I was able to get it to work thank you
Ok good to hear
OpenXR Toolkit setting makes no difference with Varjo Aero headset ran from RTX4090, keeping MSFS at 45fps which is half of max value (90). I tried different NIS upscaling values from 5% to 100%. It's like it is not there. On the other hand, my other PC with RTX3090Ti GPU runs MSFS at 88fps on the same headset without OpenXR installed at all. Go figure.
Maybe something to do with the 4090 firmware idk.
What means restart Vr session exactly? power off and on VR?
Exit vr and re enter vr in msfs
@@2020fsers aaahhhh thanks!! I should get my VR tomorrow or Monday 😁👍
Awesome I bet you can't wait lol so now I need to ask what did you purchase ?
just a small upgrade from Rift S to Reverb G2. My Rift S is useless I always had issues with USB port connection in win 10 and everyday I had to reconnect him to my pc because "unrecognized device" BS!!! and since I get win 11 Rift S is a piece of junk and not working at all. So last time I used my VR was maybe 1 year ago. I hope now will be different with this HP.
Oh wow yes the reverb is like night and day for clarity you will love it . Make sure you are in a well lit room for decent tracking .
Does anyone know how to get the confirguration menu to pop up on a Pimax 8kx. I hit Ctrl+F2 and nothing. I changed the hotkeys in the XR Toolkit and still nothing. I know this video was for a Reverb but is there any video or set up for Pimax users? Thanks.
