He’s helped build background infrastructure, given young players chances and made most of us appreciate our players and their talents as well as personalities and finally become respected by other countries. Whilst that negative and defensive mindset is uppermost, we won't get the attacking football we all crave. England (nee, Britain!) is sh*t scared of embarrassment! It's in our culture and it's reflected in our football. Other teams aren't scared to express themselves that's why Spain were so beautiful upon they eye. In short: They went for it and showed absolutely NO FEAR! There's also a part of us that has to manage our expectations and for me, for the type of football England play, I think we did alright! England had pound for pound one of the best if not the best squad in the tournament. The fact that they stumbled into the final isn’t a reflection of the team but of the coach. We’ve seen 45+10 min of a hungry english team that wants to go places. Unfortunately they continued to sit back and let the game get to them. The first real test in this tournament proved to be their downfall and they can be lucky to having made it this far.
Moving forward they need a coach that not only can keep the press at bay but galvanise this team and add minute after minute of the team they can be.

My pick for England is Lee Carsley as Caretaker Manager to cover the Nations League matches later this year. See how he goes whilst also looking at other candidates. I'm sure Lee would happily step in even though it might turn out to be temporary, as the experience would be invaluable, he would get a preview of what it's like to step up to that level, and if he wins us the Nations League (which we got relegated in under Southgate) and gets us promoted back to League A again, then he would certainly make a name for himself and make himself a top candidate for the longer term position. Promoting the U21 manager to the first team worked for Spain, maybe it will work for us. Lee also knows many if not all of the younger players and likely managed several too.

Well said Gary Neville! And thats coming from a Liverpool fan! But I do like Gary Neville, depite the fact that he played for The Scum!...lol..😂 He always comes across well, speaks admirably and respectfully and gives a very good acct of himself and I respect him for that.
But seriously now....all this hate that is being thrown at Gareth Southgate from disenchanted England fans, that are too young (in the main) to know how, in the past, we've had just as many great individuals, that when you collectively, put them in an England shirt, couldn't string 3 passes together!
We haven't seen anything like what Gareth has achieved in the last 8 yrs, not since we won the WC in '66...its been solid disappointment after disappointment ever since!
For those that know, GS, has been nothing short of a revelation for England. I wanted nothing more for him than to see him lift that trophy, something that he so richly deserves.
My guess, is that in time, when we realise how far England have fallen from the days that he was in charge, we will be crying out to have him back! We'll be pleading for him to rejoin as manager once again...and then, maybe, people will finally acknowledge just how good we've had it lately! And then, just maybe, we'll get a 2nd bite at this very, very special and under-appreciated cherry!
God bless you Gareth, I wish you well and I'll miss you!....its all down hill for us from now on...but thank you so much for everything you did and for all the hope you gave us..I wish you well...💞

He torpedoed England's chances far more than their opponents giving his team such an unintended handicap that they had no realistic chance to win beyond mere hope. Great comments from Gary Neville. I've really enjoyed listening to him and Jamie Carragher. These 2 guys have spoken a hell of a lot of sense in the aftermath of the final. They've just called it so honestly. They are right I believe. The failings to pinpoint as to why we didn't get over the line are spot on.
I don't believe Southgate could have done anything to bridge the gap in quality with the Spanish players. Our guys do not have the quality in possession. Simple as that. Same failing for decades. A manager can't change that. It's a whole footballing infastructure. There's a reason the same countries have, 4, 5, 6, 7 trophies, because they have that coaching infastructure. You can't develop it in a few years, it done over decades. Only Spain and France in the last 2 decades have entered the Brazil/Argentina/Germany/Italy circle. Those 6 countries dominate international football. England having a strong league can enter but it takes the will and ability to recognise our flaws instead of blaming the manager all the time.
