I think it’s fair to say he was very good for us. We were really having bad times with Allardyce and McClaren and Fabio and losing to Iceland. He stabilised the team, got the fans interested again, got a toxic media back onside and took us high up the rankings and deep into tournaments. But he hasn’t improved since he came and the longer he stayed the more his good work was being undone. This is the right decision.

He made England extremely strong in 2021. He did make England stronger than Spain in the final only to get taken down by Spain. Twice that England came runners up. Southgate is all about making the England extremely strong and that's it. England are well coordinated and well cohesive but less than Spain in the end. He did good things for England by beating the teams that are more stronger in the major tournaments which were Columbia, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Iran, Senegal and Netherlands. I reckon Southgate made a right decision. England needs a new tactical vision. England should play a possession based style.
