Here in Spain we love you Sid, specially the Oviedistas. Great guy I perfectly remember Luis de La Fuente as a player. He won 2 spanish leagues with Athletic which is quite an achievement

The Youth Development System in Spain is second to none, Spanish Coaches are tactical and in LaLiga teams are comfortable in possession, they pride in technical ability, and it is one of the leagues that still promote a lot of player expression. The scary thing about this Spanish Team is that I have no doubt between now and World Cup 2016 they'll find some new Spanish Talent. Their Youth System is unbelievable. I always say that a league plays a part in how the national team plays. You can literally dip your hand in every LaLiga Club and Find a proper midfielder. It is just their style, their way, it is how they do things. Great from Sid on Spain.
This Spanish team have been with their coach since 15/16 yrs old. He won major trophies at under 19s, under 21s and the nations league. Literally raised them, the understanding is far beyond Southgate's.

In Spain we're professional doubters and pessimists when it comes to our national football team. It even happened with the golden generation that won the three titles in a row. Lucky for us, our team believed and was totally keen about changing our beliefs.

When you hear great reporters like Sid who do this work out of the passion for the game not just a post retirement side gig you seem to realise the gap between journalist and players who wannabe a journalist
The first Spain game I watched all year was the win against Italy in the group stage. What I found most striking wasn't the quality with the ball (was never lost since the mid 2000s), and the newfound tactical variety that has proven so difficult to defend against It was the attitude. Here there were, a team full of little known players, some really young as discussed, playing the finals of a major tournament, and they had *zero* respect to show for this Italy that were title defenders. That pattern would repeat itself in the other games, except perhaps that second half against Germany. That lack of self-awareness, and blatant disregard for the ghosts of the past, was what told me then that they well may make it big this time. I wasn't disappointed.

I'm from Spain. Spain is a strong team but in these tournments where all depends on 1 match, you're in or out, you never know who's gonna win. You can have a strong team and a bad day, bad luck, etc and you are out... Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Germany and France will be the main favourites for next World Cup.

Finally football and strategics is played by the players so a team has to adapt the strategic to the players that you have on every moment... having posession worked for the 2008 generation because we had the best midfielders in the world (iniesta, xavi, silva, cesc, Busquet, Xabi Alonso, Cazorla...) but once they were gone it is impossible to intend playing in the same way, this is why HIerro and Luis Enrique failed as managers, they tried to play in the same way with not so talented players. For Spain possesion is important still but they have been able to adapt this philosophy to the most talented players in the country.

Glad Seb mentioned the point ‘judging them by what they could be’ because I cannot think of a single player ever that met their expectations from 18 let alone 16. They either under achieve or exceed, growth is never linear to age (arbitrary age that we came up with is not how biology works). Prime example was Pablo Aimer, at 18 he was better than Messi.
.for me, Spain went from a mobile and fast Tiki-taka to a "game control" tiki-taka..... .. and now, they improved it by adding more "speed" and attacking play, but without forgetting the "tiki taka", because most of their "goals" are by equal combination +10goals, and for me that is what tiki is about -taka.
Im all for admiring young talant. And they are performing at the highest level. But pressure and time can ravage young talent. Ive seen players burn out like Dele Ali and ive seen players not reach the heights we expect from them. It'll be a hard feat to be at the top of your game from 16 to 32.

Im all for admiring young talant. And they are performing at the highest level. But pressure and time can ravage young talent. Ive seen players burn out like Dele Ali and ive seen players not reach the heights we expect from them. It'll be a hard feat to be at the top of your game from 16 to 32.
England probably do have more left in the tank as they’ve done very little in games as Spain have had big challenges to overcome.
I would argue to opposite. England will have had 24 hours less rest from the last game. They’ve been to extra time more times. Spain rested the whole team in the 3rd group match

Spain spanking us would be the best thing for football and we can rid ourselves of the cult of Southgate and Southgateball too.
