Escaping Reality: Leap Year Weekend Fishing Adventure - Galveston East Bay
DAY 1
Had a great day of fishing with fellow Houston Insider, Aaron Perez. Called up Aaron yesterday and invited him out to Bolivar to fish in the morning. We fished for about 8 hours. It was a tough bite. We grinded it out and hit several spots. Missed a lot of hook sets but managed 3 slot trout. Caught a couple of undersize trout and a stingray all on artificials. Wasn't a huge day of catching, but enjoyed having Aaron join me fishing for the day.
Tips/Tactics:
Tough day on the water today. We tried everything in our tackle boxes. The trout were hitting the bait to stun it, then would circle back around and barely pick it up. It was a hard bite to read. We missed a lot of hook sets due to this. Trout were feeding right at the drop offs in the canal that we fished. Moderate retrieve with and without twitches got the most action. We power-fished 5 or 6 other spots, but only caught some undersize trout in these other locations.
DAY 2
I was tired from the day before but was invited to go fish with fellow Insider, Randy Murphree. I really wanted to get on some redfish, so I picked up live shrimp at the North Jetty Bait Camp, and we went east to see what we could find. Bite was very slow, but the fish that we did catch AND lost were nice fish. Fished some of my summer spots just to see if the rise in water temp made a difference. It was not as good as the summer, but we managed to get some fish in the boat.
Looking forward to the Spring bite. A little tired of Winter fishing but we changed it up and got on some different fish other than speckled trout.
Tips/Tactics:
Changed it up today and fished live shrimp. Caught a nice "bonus" red on an unmanned popping cork. Redfish really hammered it. Heard the splash while I was re-rigging another rod. Lost a bull red using a "get 'er done" rig fishing the bottom. Redfish ran into the pilings and I couldn't stop it. Hooked on to some big gar as well. Fished summer spots this afternoon. Bite was slow, but the fish were there.
