Nice video. Since you said you made some mistakes when starting your luxury handbag collection, I woul like to know which 2-3 bags were those, and what would you choose today that is comparable in function and look.

I am a forever fan of the Tom Ford and Stefano Pilati era of YSL, so I cannot comprehend the appeal of many of these YSL bags. They look similar to the Gucci Marmonts which personally I am not a fan of either.
These bags may not fetch much on resale or get likes on instagram, But if I am thinking of someone buying their 1st luxury bag to truly wear and use forever, w/o getting tired of. These would be my suggestions:
*Ferragamo/The Row. Classic shapes, and is discreet and under the radar in terms of not having a very recognizable/visible branding.
*Preloved Vuitton in epi leather from 2000s (Saint Jacques, Brea, Randonnee for backpack wearers, etc...) However, the current version of the Cluny bag is a chic Kelly equivalent.
*Bottega Venetta, but not "new Bottega" styles. The classic intrecciato styles that they have produced since Tomas Maier. That said, I think the smooshy oversized clutch is beautiful, but it needs to sit on the shelf for 5+ years and unearthed when its long since forgotten.
*and if I had to pick Chanel, then a Cerf. The most boring, unspecial, bag Chanel probably ever made. I'd swap the Deauville for an Hermes Garden Party, more functional handles and absolutely discreet.
In reality, I think my first luxury bag was a preloved Tom Ford era YSL Mombasa bag, bought a decade later. I love my 2000s-era statement bags! haha!

When making your first luxury bag purchase I think it's important to consider a few things -
Are you comfortable selling items if they don't get used anymore? I really hope to never need to sell, and that influences my purchases.
What size of collection do you want to have? Will this be the only designer handbag you ever buy (keeping in mind it's a little addictive)? If you want to have a small collection, I would avoid trendy colors and styles, unless they already work beautifully with your aesthetic.
This might be controversial, but how old are you? I'm glad I didn't buy my first designer handbag until late 20's. My style changed so frequently from 15-25. I was working out how I wanted to present my adult self to the world. I'm sure my style will continue to evolve, but a little more slowly.
Have you travelled and is that important to you? You can fly around the world for the price of a Chanel handbag. If you haven't been outside of your country or done some independent exploration, you might consider putting that into a trip. If this isn't important to you, that's totally fine too! But it's worth thinking about. With every bag purchase, I remind myself that it's more than a plane ticket.

I agree! I travelled, lived life and waited until my late 20s to get my first designer bag. Also, I had a better income too so it felt right. On that note, I'd probably choose to wait until my 40s if it meant owning a Birking or a Kelly bag as my first designer bag 😄
@@mariagabbott haha very true! Goodness knows I waisted plenty of money in my early 20s, and now I think of the bags I could have saved for. Sometimes I kick myself for not saving and buying my Chanel flap earlier before price hikes, but I didn't feel passionately about it then and I was traveling!
Beautifully said! I bought a vintage Dior Saddle Bowler this summer because I would have spent a few days with friends and family in Paris were it not for covid. If I couldn't do that, I'd get a fabulous bag. Very quirky and not everyone's cup of tea (I prefer it to the classic saddle though), but it suits me down to the ground in terms of style and practicality

My first Chanel bag is the Chanel 2.55 Mini and it is the best bag ever! It has four holes on top so it can be a shoulder bag or a crossover bag. It's small but can fit so much because it only has one flap and the distressed calfskin leather is flexible. I love that I can wear it shopping but also out to dinner. It's my favourite bag for sure!

Totally agree that someone's first luxury bag should be an every-day dress up & down option, and the Saint Laurent LouLou (or College) would be my recommendation for sheer versatility and wearability. 3 Chanel bags I bought early on were not mistakes at all but were learning experiences about handbags and purchases I made after those were more satisfying.
Thank you for making this video! I just purchased my first luxury bag, which was a Ysl black medium envelope bag with silver hardware for the reasons you mentioned for the loulou but I figured the grained leather on the envelope would allow me to throw it around a bit more than the loulou even though it looks more formal. I was so torn. Buying your first bag was is not easy (at least for me) your video was reassuring because I love your style since it’s so chic and classic and that was my concern with buying a Ysl bag. I didn’t want it to be too trendy like the Gucci and Ysl camera bags you see so often on Instagram but still in that affordable range.

I am in love the loulou toy😍😍😍. The look is classic, the leather is sturdy and the hardware doesnt easily scratch! I got mine in black on black last year. And i saw that the price has gone up by 100€ recently. What‘s not to love 😉😘😃🤩🤩🤩

I think Gucci Soho Disco is a great everyday casual bag, and although some people may say that it's "over", I still reach for it more than any of my Chanel bags. I also think the Chanel WOC is great for special occasions (holiday parties, weddings, etc) and is great for travel when you want to dress up for dinner.
The he Soho has been around for years. Don’t think it is going anywhere. Plus still at a good price point

I love my black camera bag, and I'm definitely getting a flap. I feel they will both be looking great 10 years from now (I'm not concerned with being trendy) Not exactly cheap, but not taking the absolute pee like some brands *cough Chanel*
Love your video (as always) and I agree with you; I got a Chanel mini flap in black lambskin and I could not be happier with it! I find it extremely versatile and really easy to get in and out of - I am not a fan of complicated closures so I don't love the double flap. I also have a (old)Celine trio bag that I love and use a ton. For me these 2 are the best in the small bag category :) I don't love tote bags so I think my next purchase will be the Celine Classic bag as I think it could be a good option for me as a work bag
These two bags are the perfect pair: one for everyday and one for more special occasions 😊I also really like the Classic box bag by Céline!
The Celine Trio bag is my everyday bag. It is light weight holds a lot and easy to find my stuff. A bit of wear on the corners but f you use a bag it shows wear
Love the video! Do you have any suggestions for similar bags to the ysl loulou? Ive tried it on in store and I love everything about it apart from the long straps, it sits very low on me cross body and as u know the strap isnt adjustable and the chanel is way out of my budget :(

The Bellechasse is also a great messenger bag from Saint Laurent, and more understated than the Loulou.

Erschreckend, dass ich derweil so einige Designertaschen habe, auch von den genannten. Meine erste war übrigens die Chloé Marcie, die ich dann gleich in 2 Farben genommen habe 😂 ich bin auch insgesamt mit meinen Entscheidungen zufrieden, nur die Balenciaga City Bag hat sich nicht gelohnt.
