They are talking advertisements. In the past they used promis to build a connection to the buyer now they have influencers. I mean, their name says it "influencers". I follow a lot people good thing is I'm not that easy to "influence" and I'm very frugal (aka poor :D) so I think multiple times if I wanna buy something. But I like the inspiration they can provide.

Hi Nadia, I agree that Lydia is the best example of this. it is not realistic clothes that expensive. Dresses for $700 , $500, from Net a Porter, Luisa Via Roma, it is just insane... with that amount of $ I can buy tons of clothes with better quality at Zara or Asos, H&M as well but they gave a huge shipping problem right now. Well said , I agree 💯 with the geek is chic.

Evelyn, I think you are a rare gem on RUclips. This is one of your best videos ever, and I thank you for being so honest, genuine and sincere. I really appreciate your channel as I feel I can really trust your words, your tips and suggestions. You are a pro in the fashion industry, you have a lot of experience and you speak from your heart and I can feel the passion in what you say and what you do. Luxury fashion and beauty are my favorite channels, and many times I have wondered: "Am I being fooled by these pretty faces?"
I have noticed lately that the same brands, both beauty and fashion related, are being celebrated and bragged by all the youtubers that I follow and that makes me wonder: is this real? Of course is not!
It is a real shame that we have come to the point where we are getting subliminal messages, through channels that are supposed to provide real and true experiences and advices! As you said, the meaning of luxury has been distorted. As far as I am concerned a luxury item is not definitely something I would and I could buy every day, and guess what? I believe that is a blessing, because I do appreciate everything I own and when I buy the bag, or the shoes or whatever item I might like, I am the happiest girl on earth. I noticed how now they are making a fuss about fast fashion when the same people just a few weeks ago, were talking about the environment and how quality is better than quantity. Anyways, I agree 100% with every word you said. Please don't change! You are the best!

Amen from me too. Recently a certain influencer from Milton Keynes said she got "joy" out of using a face cream that cost 700 pounds sterling for one jar (really!). In the next video she said that her mother is a cashier at a grocery store. Hmmmm... I wondered a while back when she cleaned out her closet how she filled three racks of clothes to give away when just weeks before she told us how much she loved each item. Hmmm.... The craziest show was about playing a homeless person on Christmas, only holding out for 5 hours sleeping on the cold ground in a tent. Well meant, perhaps, but very insulting to truly homeless people. Then taking off soon for a ritzy ski vacation.
The restrictions brought upon us by the global health crisis separate the wheat from the chaff.
The girls who now can't drag their viewers around to luxury stores, dentists, hair removal and nail salons, etc. don't have anything to say. So they sit in their kitchens and look bored.
They will probably end up like Britney Spears.

It's true. However, there is a saying 'Who is more foolish - the fool who leads or those who are following?'. My point being - influencing in digital media is a job. There are many people in that particular industry for us to choose from when it comes to following, including a prerogative to not choosing anyone at all and to dedicate our time to different content. We are the ones who should filtrate what we are choosing to watch and who should have realistic take on what social media and digital marketing actually are.

Yes! Say it louder so the people in the back can hear!
Even the “ethical” youtubers are doing this stuff like all reviewing the same brand at the same time. One ethical/low-waste influencer recently mentioned how long-lasting a pair of jeans was and I had to ask them how they could even say that when the brand has only been doing jeans for like a year and they’ve only had them a couple months.
I have very low tolerance for being fake, especially when it’s clear they think I am too stupid to notice.

I used to watch youtube for lookbooks/styling, but it's just become a constant stream of advertising. There's no real knowledge or insight into the brand and you just see them selling it within the year because they "just never wore it" or it "found it hard to style"/"didn't go with anything in my wardrobe"; just seems to enforce the idea that you don't have to consider things properly before you buy them/keep them. I've unsubscribed from so many channels since the virus outbreak because there's no value in the video, just another loungewear haul or using the outbreak to gain more views/followers.

Great video! Totally agree! People have to be more honest. I also have to say that there is an enormous amount of pressure from viewers for influencers to “turn looks.” I am not even big and I feel it every day. People complain but also have unrealistic expectations. It is hard sometimes to find a balance. I cannot tell you how many negative comments I get for repeating clothes or shoes... People are brutal. Also, people say horrible things about youtubers like Lydia but they still subscribe and still watch. Try being a sustainable fashion influencer repeating looks and doing everything right and see how many views you get... None! I have a pretty sad opinion on this but it is reality. People watch the people they bash... The ones with a million hauls, extravagant lifestyle, that are horrible people, self absorbed with little integrity...

I agree with every single point you are making. Additionally, what frustrates me right now is that they still flaunt many hauls when many people lost their jobs, have to claim benefits, small businesses going bust etc, money is tight and put towards food and medicine. It's a very inconsiderate and quite crass attitude. They should be showing us how to use an existing wardrobe with a few new things but nothing flashy and momentarily move their proposition on cooking and exercising at home etc. perhaps we are seeing too young influencers and we need more mature ones, there is a market for it. Exactly!! That's why they were all so pissed off when the ASA told them they had to declare their freebies - it spoiled the illusion they created that they're spending their own money. They want us to believe they're super-rich, dropping thousands a week, when in actual fact it's all free and then they make more money from the affiliate links! They make people feel depressed and inferior, yet its all a lie!

The reason why they receive discounts and vouchers is because they've spent a lot of their own money on luxury goods. Purchasing expensive clothes ends up being an investment because luxury brands and sites take notice and end up sponsoring these influencers. They're probably making at least 20,000 usd from sponsorships. The phrase, "you have to spend money to make money" rings true here.

I appreciate you shining the light for people who can get caught up with trying to keep up with an influencer they like. What is sad as you said is when designers charge hundreds for poor quality, and the influencer would promote the item as if it is superior quality. Then there are the 10 Zara hauls and 15 Everlane hauls, sometimes it’s too much. What’s even more crazy is when “influencers” do a closet clean and so many pieces have tags on it and they dare say “I’m selling the item” and you didn’t even pay for it...the nerve. Thankfully, RUclips is just entertainment, but I wish there were more with a true sense of style.

However, despite being a gorgeous woman with a pretty house and nice career etc, nobody can deny how dodgy she's making her sponsorships. That's why she's getting so much hate online. Tamara is also an youtuber with tons of expensive items but when you go through her comments, rarely you find negative ones. Why is that?!? Weeeelll...I remember even now when Lydia "bought" her Smeg appliances for her then new house. That video was marked as "non-sponsored". Then UK introduced a law for disclosing sponsorships. Suddenly in her videos the Smeg items were marked as PR products. Also, again I remember how annoyed and what a rant she made when that law was passes. That's why there were so manny people reporting her content and that's why she had to appear in from of the UK commission to explain her content. So now she puts AD on absolutely all her videos. So you never know what's sponsored and what not. Ok she's says that she works in partnership with this or that brand for a portion of her video but when it comes to her My Theresa hauls for example...only God knows. And to be honest, I watch her because I like her house because when it comes to her day to day outfits..not a big fan.

Thanks, I think reality checks like this video are long overdue for the luxury community. What exacerbates the problem is that viewers could get stuck in a "bubble" filled with these haul videos given the way algorithms on social media platforms work, and might lose a sense of how rare it is to buy luxury items. As a result, I find myself increasingly avoiding hauls, and forcing myself to wait longer before pulling the trigger and buying a product just to make sure that I truly love it.

Thank you for this refreshing and intelligent discourse. It is very much needed. Many of us are well aware of the illusory and unrealistic "lifestyle" of some so-called "influencers". But the problem is wider and "influencers" are only reflection of state of mind worldwide. The image of buying or consuming luxury items like they would be replaceable underwear is actually offensive: in the first place for example for intelligent, highly educated, working women from "real life" and second for luxury brand itself. I deeply feel that something is really wrong in the field of fashion. Not only with fast fashion which is destruction for environment, but also with luxury fashion. The quality of luxury items has in general dramatically decline in last decade and the price tag for some items is too often so ridiculous that makes me feel like they are playing jerks of us. I am looking forward similar debate.

I am very thoughtful and mindful of every single purchase I make because I am not trying to waste money on items that aren’t even my style or are just excess purchases for showing off. I am very conscious of every purchase I make and make sure that it’s something that actually goes with my style and I will use. I’m not trying to help with the already over polluting problem from the fashion industry. Thanks for articulating what most of us are already thinking!!! 💜

:-) Bleib gesund.

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for this video! I love your channel because of your authenticity, and although I have watched Lydia I just can't anymore, it's all just too highly polished and feels completely fake. I do, however, enjoy watching Sophie Shohet, she feels very much like a real, genuine, human being. I suspected there must've been more sponsorship of certain influences than they admitted to, so it's interesting to learn about monthly vouchers enabling them to (seemingly) spend so much money so regularly! It's clear from my luxury collection and general buying habits that I'll never be offered such a shopping deal! 😂 I thought there was something wrong with me because I didn't desperately want what I was being shown on RUclips and Instagram, E.G. LV multi pochette, maybe I'm just not that easily influenced! I like having my own style! These videos are so much more important than another unboxing! Thank you!

Awesome video as always! Really good point about how consumers find themselves in financial trouble from hauls. For example, I know a girl who completely deteriorated her credit and financial health from maxing out her credit cards to spend it all on makeup... makeup. Now she can’t even get approved for any sort of loan, credit card, etc. All due to seeing the absolutely fucking crazy amount of makeup beauty influencers have and her needing to feel that validation. I think what people forget is that having such an enormous amount of useless shit is part of their job as influencers. Their entire job is to get people to buy things. Don’t get me wrong though, like you said, I really enjoy the eye and the taste that my favorite influencers have. But at the end of the day, I take inspiration from them to curate my own style and express myself and that’s what fashion is all about to me. You’re the realest thing on RUclips Evelyn, please don’t change!

another point, and i speak for myself here, i get kinda disgusted when ladies post chanel/ hermes/ VCA hauls every week. I mean neither is it realistic and borders just vulgar spending and display of wealth. As an owner of multiple fashion items (including birkins/ expensive watches etc, which I work very hard to buy), i find it repulsive to see people unbox and show off products every week. Its almost as if their self esteem and confidence is tied to acquiring one item after another. As a person who works very hard for what i buy, those are not people i can relate to and definitely not inspired by (Tamara, MelinMelbourne, LVLoverCC etc).

Thank you for this video! I wish people talked about appreciating what's already in their closet a little bit more, and showed that you don't need to constantly buy new items to come up with different, interesting outfits. Love the sustainable approach you're taking in regards to shopping, it has inspired me to slow down a lot in my own consumption and to have more fun with the items that I already own. xoxo

I totally agree!! There are some influencers I was following years ago who would strictly buy luxury/high end items. they bought few pieces they could wear many ways and for a long time. when they got bigger, brands like PLT, fashionova etc. reached out to them and now they are posting content for them! this is frustrating because there's no authenticity! they chose the money over what they used to stand for.

You are hilariously savage and brilliantly eloquent; I wish more influencers were like you. I have a few 30 year-old vintage Louis pieces with their canvases still in perfect condition. I use them all the time and I would never part with them. I cannot stand the new, lesser quality "luxury" bags that cost an arm and a leg and still need repairs after only a few years (or sometimes less). You are so right and we need to concentrate on quality rather than quantity. Love your work ❤

I’ve been watching your videos for a long time. You are a true fashion expert and I so appreciate your balanced, reasonable and conscious views. 👍 I started my YT channel less than a year ago as an outlet to de-stress and I’ve really enjoyed connecting with others who have similar interests in luxury/fashion. I try to focus my content on either providing helpful information on products I buy with my own $$ (definitely no hauls! 😆) or creating fun videos to distract from the seriousness of life. I agree with you that once authenticity is out the window, what’s the point. Also, I am really aspiring to be more of a minimalist (not easy to do), but I took a year off from buying clothes and now use a one in / one out approach to curating my handbag collection. Meaning, I will only add an item if I’m ready to sell or donate another item. Perhaps bc I’m older than the “influencers” of today (I’m 40), I find myself being more mindful as the years pass. Thanks again for another thought-provoking video! 💕

LOVE everything u said! I often wonder about those hauls when I watch them, how can they do these hauls every week and afford all those fancy stuff that u never see them wear? I started buying second-hand clothing a couple of years ago and really happy with the pieces I got, some of them are vintage, some of them are brand new or in excellent condition, all good quality and super affordable prices. The world is already full of all kinds of stuff and no need to produce more and waste unnecessary resources. I’ve seen many RUclips bloggers/influencers make haul videos and then a couple of years later, make declutter videos to get rid of the items they hauled before. How funny!

👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 this is so refreshing, and authentic and I am here for it. The thing that gets me with some influencers is it's all about the money! Everyone seems to be coming for LEM, she is not the only one Some of our favs are all guilty of this, however it's big business and thousands of pounds luxury trips, over priced and not so great products something wrong with this picture. The Brands are to blame and we the consumers have to think and act in a rational way. Think before you spend it's all a mirage

I never really got into fashion on RUclips until last year, when a Justine Leconte video showed up on my newsfeed, and later I stumbled across your channel and also Kelly Jane. I couldn't possibly pick between you three, but your channels are my absolute favourites in fashion - Justine can tell me what will look good on me, Kelly can tell me about the business of fashion and you can tell me where to look for all of my fashion needs and whether a luxury is worth it. All three of you are relatable, experts in your area (although Kelly comes from a commercial/financial point of view) and authentic.
Since the pandemic has taken hold, it's become glaringly obvious who's creating interesting content and who's just pushing restyle me links! I even saw one influencer do 5 hauls in a single week about 2 weeks after lockdown, at which point some of the retailers weren't even delivering. I wonder if the sweatshop workers who made the clothes were able to socially distance while they slaved over those affiliate link generators.
