Tips on buying your first designer bag | Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, Gucci, Prada under $1500

- There are several things consider when it comes to buying your first designer bag and this helpful guide will help demystify the process. Whether you’re purchasing a Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada or YSL, these 4 tips and tricks will be useful in helping you decide on your first bag. My first luxury designer bag was a Louis Vuitton Speedy 35 in terrible condition, 15 years later I’ve amassed a collection of 38 (and counting) designer bags from houses like Balenciaga, Gucci, YSL, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Prada and more. I know a thing or two about buying designer bags lol!
When buying a designer handbag, I ask myself the four major questions:
Will this fit my lifestyle?
What material will work best for me?
What colors work best with my wardrobe?
Does this fit into my budget?
These are the key questions to making a purchase you won’t regret. I also recommend starting out conservative and classic in style, and as you build a collection or confidence in collecting and investing in designer bags, then you can work up to bright funky colors and designs.
At the end of the day though, only you can answer what’s the right bag for you. Most importantly buy what makes you happy. When you feel butterflies in the pit of your stomach and that rush of excitement, then you know you’ve found your perfect bag!

What was my first luxury bag? I don’t remember 😆 I’m more of a shoe person and I remember when I saw those Givenchy sandals in Italy. They made me gasp and I knew I had to have them. 💁♂️
I think your first luxury bag was that black Dior oblique tote. Haha and those Givenchy sandals are really cool!

The LV speedy was also my first bag. I realized it wasn't my style and got rid of it. I have a collection of maybe 5 bags. 3 of which I've had for about 10 years. None are luxury. Now that I'm 36, it's time to step my minimalist game up. Less but luxury!

My first handbag is a Louis Vuitton vernis brea in rouge fauviste, i still love her, she is big, elegant and doesnt scream LV, its made in leather and vernis which makes her shine and she is so elegant, makes me feel like a queen 🤗🤗🤗🤗👏I can wear her for work, elegant events and casual. I cant sell her never and evr but sometimes i like to publish her and offer her just to see how much is her value. I love your content!!

Those days are looonggg gone and the luxury fashion industry is now a conveyor belt of cheaply made products without any true essence of the heritage they spew out to buyers. I used to get cards for buying expensive bags, now I get drop kicked out of the store.

My niftiest LV bag that use is an Epi Noé, but tbh the alma BBlooks like a terrific bag, especially if you want something that will go from day to night.
My first designer bag is the Stella McCartney falabella tote in black, my second bag is Fendi peekaboo in black as well, both black and easy to style. Now for my third bag I'm considering the Balenciaga city bag in pink, I just tried it on today in the store and I'm loving it

Prada was my first luxury bag. Do wish I had kept it. I was too appreciate these are timeless. Prada is still one of my favorite luxury brands.

This is so helpful! I thought I did so much research for my first. I bought the Speedy B 30 in DE. Played it safe by not picking the monogram but went with the 30 because it was only a few $ more. 🤦🏻♀️ I completely overlooked the size factor. I still love it but don’t get to use it as much as I’d like.

Hi Kaja! I'm really excited for you! The first bag is always the most special.
I'll list the available materials from most to least durable:
Canvas - water proof, scratch resistant, overall very hardy
Epi Leather - water resistant and won't scratch as easily as Empreinte
Empreinte Leather - Beautiful, but I think the imprints will rub out and relax over time
Vernis- Gorgeous, but requires a lot of care and attention, especially when storing
I hope this helps! Ultimately, get the material you love- always buy what makes you excited and never settle. Because trust me, you'll eventually buy what you wanted in the first place afterwards! haha! Anyway, good luck! And tell me what you end up getting!

Hi, thanks for the very interesting video! Looking to buy my first designer bag in a few weeks 🤗 I have loooved the small YSL Loulou for years. But I’m really really torn between a classic black and the beige or taupe shades.
I’m not the biggest jeans girl so I’m not that worried about colour transfer for the lighter shades. I originally wanted to go for the black, but I feel like I already have many black bags. Although that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. A friend of mine recently bought the light beige and it’s sooo nice in real life. Any advice for me? ❤
Hi there! I'm excited for you- the first one is always the most special. And trust me, don't ever sell your first bag- it's always everyone's biggest regret in their collection. YSL is a really great place to start! I think when it comes to color, my only advice is to buy the color that makes you most excited. Don't worry about buying the color you think you should get for practicality, because trust me, you will always pine after the other color. Aside from that, just have fun with it! And let me know which bag you pick up!

I love both the DG Sicily and the LV Alma BB- I think both are such great bags! My advice: buy the one that makes you most excited! I'll be honest, long term, the LV Alma BB will holds it's value much better than the DG, which makes it a better investment. However, I highly recommend buying the bag that truly makes your heart sing- don't buy your first bag based on resale value alone. And please let me know what you decide to go with- I'm very excited for you!

My first bag was a small Givenchy antigona in black. First I wanted the smooth leather, but the grain leather was on sale and I was able to get a wallet. I should have gotten what I wanted first. I don't have it because I sold it due to never wearing it. It was too big I should have gotten the mini antigona in smooth leather.

My ”first” bag was louis. vuitton never full bought it preloved and very old. I am now looking at gucci ophidia and louis vuitton pochette accessoires but both I can only use during summer and spring but I did find ysl puffer toy bag whoch would fit me all year around and to a lot of occasions. I want to be able to wear both crossbody and on shoulder. I haven’t decided but I don’t know yet I think it’s worth spending more on the ysl if I can wear it that much
I agree, Kate! The YSL may be a better buy if you can use it year round. I'm all about getting the most bang for my buck when buying a new bag!
I need to decide on a mom bag. I’m having my second daughter in a few weeks ( after four losses, it’s such a joy ). Usually my husband and I have the agreement that I can buy two bags a year, depending on cost. Usually we stayed under 1000$ per bag but now we want to spend a bit more and it’s shocking, how much prices have increased in the last year, probably even since this video.
A mulberry Alexa mini, for example is 1300$, so totally not in the MK range anymore at all.
I’d be ok going pre loved but it’s so hard , to decide because I simply don’t wear big bags. And I don’t think I need a huge diaper bag. I can leave an ordinary catch all pouch with baby stuff in the car and only need to carry a few diapers , a change of clothes maybe and the like with me. But everyone tells me, I’ll regret not buying a huge bag.

You're so right- bag prices are absolutely insane these days. It's sometimes shocking quite honestly. It sounds like you have a good idea of what you want and what will work for you, so I always say trust that feeling. Between the Speedy 25 and the Chloe Woody- I might recommend the Speedy more so over the Woody just for resale value down the road. But at the end of the day pick what will work best for you. And I totally understand how you could be thinking about this for a whole month- totally relatable! 😆 Let me know what you decide to get, and again- Congrats!!

Great question! The Multi Pochette does lean toward the trendy side and I think the utilitarian trend might eventually slow down. But I think since you're considering Empriente, that is definitely a good classic leather choice. And just like the Felicie Pochette, the Multi Pochette can be worn in so many different ways! You could easily wear it all together for the utilitarian look, or wear it as a clutch, or just one pochette on a chain for a dressed-up look. The possibilities are endless! I think you've made a great first bag choice!

I am about to get bag #2. I purchased the Louis Vuitton Palm Springs MM backpack. I am torn between the Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 World Tour or the Gucci Neo Vintage GG Supreme messenger bag with the matching wallet and key pouch. I already have the Louis Vuitton desk agenda, 6 key holder and the pocket organizer. I have been hearing nightmare stories about the Louis Vuitton quality control issues as well as the hardware tarnishing. Part of me says add to the Louis Vuitton collection and part of me says change it up and start a new collection. Help!!!! 😂😂 What are your thoughts?
Hi Renee'! That's such a tough call!! You started out with a great bag, the Palm Springs backpack is so versatile, and I like both options that you brought up. Louis Vuitton quality isn't what it was just 15-20 years ago, but I think as long as it's cared for, it can be easily maintained. Gucci quality on the other hand is superb, I've never had an issue with my Gucci bags. I like how the LV can be personalized for you and be a really special bag, but keep in mind, if you plan to sell, that might hurt the value down the road. I like the Gucci bag in the sense that it can be worn with the included strap, or dressed up with a chain, plus the tiger head is cute too. Ultimately, I would ask you- looking into the future- of the two bags, which one would you regret NOT having 3 years from now?
