Sadly, Canon is making the best low end cameras and the worst high end cameras. The SL2 has pretty much everything Canon has to offer in a $499 body. You have to spend over $3,000 to add 4k and the 4k is the worst on the market. The SL2 is the best video Canon has to offer, which makes it a great camera for the price, but overall makes Canon terrible. Something like the 80d should crush a $499 camera, but sadly it doesn't.

Couldn't agree more SnapChick! The other day, I did something crazy... I shot an entire wedding with the 200D! I mean it's unpaid gig for a friend and I'll do my best in the edits to create memorable highlights... But yeah, marry this 200D body up with a decent lens, it really is something rather impressive for its price point for video! I'm also pleased with it's capability on stills... but photography isn't my main intention at this stage.

I loved the clarity of you review. Articulate, extensive, non biased, not too technical and you cut through the crap. Thank you.
You also appear to be able to do the whole thing in one take.
    Impressive!

You read my mind with this. I bought the D5600 for video so I could use it with my Nikon Lens collection, but right away I realized the Nikon AF wasn’t going to cut it. So I returned it and picked up the SL2. First time ever owning a canon so it has a learning curve & it forced me to buy new glass also, but it seems so perfect for the kind of video work I want to do.

I just bought one, and this lens also you are using. I always liked going around in my motorcycle taking pictures, but I always used my cellphone as a wide angle lens and my superzoom camera as a zoom lens. For landscapes on facebook it was always good enough, but I want to expand my hobby, specially taking pictures of people, and for that we need a bigger camera for many reasons. Glad to see I chose a good enough camera with great value.

Nikon is so behind at this point....the D850 brings them into today's market except for 4k and the Insanity of no evf... But within next few months when new Sony and Canon cameras come out they are left in the dust again

  • @JasperFx

I'm a Canon user with a T4i for many years now, which unfortunately doesn't have the Dual Pixel Auto Focus that was introduced in 2013. Now I find myself in a tough spot; wanting that dual pixel AF capability immediately for current video projects, but also wanting to save up for a higher end full frame body, which I can't afford yet. The SL2 would be the cheapest way to satisfy the current itch, but on the other hand, I should be patient and put that money towards my "full frame fund." Ah, decisions.

I have the SL2 I have the 28mm pancake STM lens & the 50mm 1.8 STM If you like shooting video the kit lens and the older kit lense I have 18mm to 55mm F3.5 STM and my 250mm STM focus much faster and track stuff better and they both dont make any sound at all in your recording like my first two mentioned above.... Don't know how your lenses work but Try out a kit 18-55 STM you will really like the video on the SL2.

Hi are you sure it's the new 18-55 4.5 F stem lens the older ones used to make a buzzing noise when they focused when recording? what exactly is the model number of your lens? If it's the new one I think it's defective and you should get a replacement one. is this it? shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/ef-s-18-55mm-f-4-56-is-stm-standard-zoom-lens?Product_Search&Google_Product_Feed

Great points! I just ordered an SL2. My main reason for getting it is: the wireless remote start and stop (video) feature. I have a Nikon D5300 and the wireless remote only takes stills. I may just use the Nikon D5300 for stills and the Canon SL2 for movies. I have had many Nikons D50 - (the one that started it all D90) and now the D5300, it is almost identical to the Canon SL2.

I agree 100%. I love my Nikon D610 but the autofocus is a flat out disappointment. I recently purchased a SL2 to see what the canon autofocus was all about and I have to say is wow. The quality of video is very impressive. Especially considering what it cost.

ive got the canon 200D , & i love it , it's so light to use & carry , & so are the lenses , ive got 4 lenses , but only use 3 , the 50mm , 24mm & 75-300mm , i did get a kit lens with it but have'nt used it much , i take mostly nature shots with my camera but use my 24mm for mostly macro shots , & love it , but ive tried a nikon camera , but found it too heavy with all the lenses , so got rid of it & bought the canon , & am really happy with it .

  • @TechOutAdam

I’ve bought the Nikon D5600 for photos only, wasn’t intending it for video. I thought it was a great camera until I started using it for some videos. The hardest thing to deal with is how bad the auto focusing technology is. In manual mode it work just barely, then I started to realized if the auto focus was better on this camera the photos would be much cleaner and crisp on a consistent basis. It’s one of those things I can’t unsee now and always feel like the quality could be better. I’m probably going to buy the Canon SL2 for this reason alone. Sucks having a camera that doesn’t record video well when you need it.

I can only took about Canon 200D/SL2 and I love Canon 200/SL2. Have zero experience with the Canon 80D. Sorry Eric Rossi. The best camera or a better camera is the one that I have and what my budget allow. Maybe you right Canon 80D much worth. I will wait for the best Canon budget 4K Camera. The thing with Canon 200D/SL2 is that you can't go wrong with it and is budget friendly. So for the time being I just buy Canon 200D/SL2.

The problem with those pancake lenses is that there is no image stabilization for video. You're much better off using the kit zoom lenses for hand held video as they have stabilization. The pancake lenses are great for photos though.

I bought the SL2 a few weeks ago for the flip out screen, fast autofocus, and price. I wanted 4K video but decided these other features were better for me and I didn't want to get into the $1500 - 2000 range, where I could have everything. I'm biased toward Nikon, I find, and was kind of leaning toward the 5600 when I came across this camera. It suits me, as a beginner, and, if I lose interest in a few months, I'm not out a whole lot of money.

I've bought 200D recently after 450D many years back. So I can now play with video. But I noticed that pancake 24mm STM produce quite a loud buzz in the video. People claim they are quiet, but my experience is different. It's not like I care that much for some holiday videos, but it's there, it's easy to hear and it's not what I expected from STM. I guess mics position is one part of it - but still... it's loud. :-)
EDIT: Originally I said kit lens 18-55 f/4.0-5.6 is also noisy, but it was a mistake. Both that one and 10-18mm STM lens are pretty quiet.

Not crazy. It's content like THIS that will get Nikon off their butt. I'm a CANON guy... And I duly recognize when Nikon whips canon at something. Invested in Canon glass 40 years now. But ALWAYS nice keeping up on what's out there. I think THIS would sit on the Roxant gimble quite nicely. Currently using M series and T6i with a splash of 6d.

mpactdesignmedia what happens with that, tho? Does it do something bad, or just run hot by nature? I've got a HEMI IN A Challenger. If I didn't know better, if think there was a fire in the engine compartment. It's ALWAYS very warm. So warm, I almost never need to run heat. In CHICAGO. Heat comes right through the firewall. Huge engine. But it's not an issue.
The expensive lenses on Sony have me worried, personally...

i have a Sony a6300, and they have fixed the issue enough for most people. overheating only occurs when you record 30-40 min long 4k at the highest bitrate. if if you do that, you may want to look at actually cameras for video, like the black magic line of cameras

Should I buy Canon 77d with extra 180 dollar over sl2/ 200d ? AS Canon 77 d offers 45 autofocus Points whereas sl2 offers 9 points. Or should I invest $180 in lens with 200d. My budget fixed $730.
    Suggestion_please:
    1) 200d body costs = $380, I can use $350 in lens.
    2) 77d body costs = , $560, I can use $170 in lens
    3) any other combination?
    4) any other model/ brand with this same budget? Any other lens
#Purpose : portrait, nature, friends & family picture.
#Only photography, #No _video , i already have Samsung note 8, so can do 4k video if needed.

I started off a stills shooter with Nikon film cameras, D3s, D300s, then the cinematographer bug bit me when I paired the Nikon D800 with the Atomos Ninja. I've since moved to the D500 +Atomos - could not be happier for the way I shoot. Not gonna lie...auto-focus improvements would be great, but I've got SO MUCH Nikon glass covering 8 to 400mm, it hurts to think of changing!

Ordered the SL2...I have a G7 with 4k, never use 4k...terrible auto focus, dont want to spend $1200 and up for any sony or panasonic offerings, 80D too heavy, G7x no mic input...the list goes on and all things lead to the SL2 for casual video and vlogging...its almost perfect. If it had 4k it would destroy most of the vlog youtube market including most of the canon line...lol. Now... if image perfectionists want the best image...then lets do the pocket cinema camera from black magic later this year and then we can shoot 4k raw...but it still wont be as versitile as this little camera. I sold my 70d last year (mistake) and I miss the dual pixel auto focus...cant wait to have it back. Love your vids.

I'm currently waiting on UPS to deliver my refurbished, on sale and discounted D810. I've had a Canon T5i for a year and love it, but for full frame photography wanted to go with Nikon. I think the combination will be good - still have the T5i for video with its flippy screen.

I use a Nikon D750. It produces amazingly clear sharp video, as long as the subject is sitting still. As soon as the subject moves, and the camera has to track and refocus, its horrible. Hunting around and refocusing, making noise.
I'm keeping my Nikon gear for stills, but since I'm being called on to do more and more video, I think I need to buy a SL2.

How about shooting on the SL2 for your tutorial? What you are using now is really nice! Just curious

I have the SL2 and my biggest problem is finding lenses with a fast aperture, quite focus, and IS. The other gripes would be no micro focus adjust... I bought a Sigma 18-35 1.8, with it wide open on closer shoots I could not get my subject in focus. I had to stop down to 3.5 and that kind of kills the reason to have that lens IMHO. I did some searching and found this to be a common problem (3rd party lenses needing little tweaks in focus). 9/10 times I would not have even noticed but I was recording smaller subjects close up and it out of focus the entire time (auto focus). My dream lens for this thing would be the 10-18 STM with IS and a constant 2.8... The STM lineup is not that impressive yet.

See my post above, i found the prime lenses I used above dont work like the ones I listed they focus slower and make noise in your recordings...I would recommend getting a 18-55mm 3.5f STM kit lens used and try it for video it workes awesome and the older version is 3.5f and the new version is 4.0 so the older one is a brighter lens.
If your lens is not dead on focus try live view mode the focus should be spot on it works differently.

I think Nikon is better for photography, and Canon is better for video. I had a Nikon D5500, and it took great photos with a Nikon 20 mm f/1.8 and Nikon 85 mm f/1.8 lenses. This pic was taken with a D5500 and 85 mm f/1.8 in Niagara Falls, Canada a couple of winters ago - sergei-dratchev.pixels.com/featured/murray-street-sergei-dratchev.html

Is the rebel Canon SL2 the same as EOS 200D because some places you buy them from don't say rebel on the box/camera. Whats the difference?

They're the same thing. It's called the SL2 in the US and the 200D pretty much everywhere else. :)

I'm pretty constantly in the dust and I haven't had any issues. I haven't taken it out in the pouring rain but I've definitely had it in the snow and some light rain. I try to keep it covered when I'm not using it, but I still take photos. :)

i have a d5500 . i made a video with it using the kitlens (which i posted on my channel). it was a big improvement compared to my previous d5100. only, it is frustrating when i set the lens on auto. it is a bit jumpy and i can here the lens hunting for focus when i reviewed the shots
i found you post when i was searching for an entry level canon camera that can be an option for vlogging as well.
thanks for this post. subscribed from dubai .. ^_^

Could someone do a low light video with a good lens with this body, PLEASE? I liked the 6500 with the Zeiss 16-70 f/4 on very low light. In brighter light, the Sony 18-105 was better side by side in a few points, plus 300.00 cheaper. But id like to see the equivalent for this camera in low light.

The DPAF on canon system is just amazing for videos. Combined with the touch screen control it's a beast at focusing, even at fast moving object. I haven't tried it on 200d, but on m5 it's amazing.
I want to know how good is 200d's high iso performance.

    • @Gidean
      @Gidean 7 лет назад

Archontasius Both the canon eos m5 and the eos 200d share the same digic 7 processor and the same 24 mp sensor. This means that the iso performance of the 200d will be extremely similar to your eos m5.

Is canon rebel sl2 good for photography as well?
and does the 9AF points make a huge difference in image quality?

    • @MikedieONE
      @MikedieONE 6 лет назад

AF points never make a difference in image quality. only how good and fast the focus is. Its not the greatest focus system. but you can always switch to the livescreen dual pixel AF which has much more focuspoints and spread out much wider.
