    Love this camera. I may supplement with more glass, but I will never replace it. It is just the total package and lets grow as time goes by. Don't buy the hype in Mirrorless. Buy what is right for you. Maybe it is mirrorless, but in the low bucks, this SL-2 is tough to ignore. Nikon has nothing like it especially in video with the Dual Pixel AF. All you need to have except waste money. Thank you Marrten for your comprehensive review.

    Great video! I ordered my SL2 online. Been watching a lot of RUclips videos while waiting for it to come in. This video is by far the best. Love the detail you go into about settings and menus. Maybe my eye just isn’t trained for it but I didn’t see much difference in the pictures between the kit lens and the other lens you put on... or maybe it’s because I’m watching on my iPhone and I need a bigger screen? Anyways like other comments suggest, I think the kit lens would have helped with shaky video. I’ve seen other RUclips videos where they used the kit lens to get really smooth videos while skateboarding with the kit lens

    Hello Maarten, followed your review with great attention. I purchased the 200D/SL2 short after your review. As I needed a cheaper alternative for shooting stills at our local Carnival with can be rough... I went through several camera brands/systems over the past years. I am very impressed with the camera capabilities. In Europe it is the 2nd cheapest camera in the line of Canon DSLR's. The kit lens is nothing special indeed but I have seen worser. The camera is fairly easy to use. Not to complicated menu's. Pairing this camera with a 24-105 f/4 L lens is perhaps a little overkill...(although a very nice lens) I purchased the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 together with the nifty 50 and the results are great. I was first looking for the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 but it is heavier and more expensive. Even second hand copies of the Canon 17-55 are fairly expensive over here and it negates the portability of the system. I am considering the 24mm f/2.8 STM in the near future as it makes the system very compact. Regarding AF performance I mostly shoot in single AF centre point and recompose (I did this with most of my camera's since the Nikon F4 -with had only one AF point :-) -. I am very impressed about the dual pixel AF in Live view. I am not a videographer but I recently did some video footage with this camera and it works so much better compared to other brands. Even from a stills perspective very enjoyable. Using also mirrorless camera's I still like the optical viewfinder experience as I find it faster snappier and you have a more direct contact with the subject (this is my personal experience as I mostly use(d) viewfinder/SLR camera's).
    As I mostly shoot raw and process in Adobe ACR/LR and occasionally in Photoshop the Standard ACR profile gave me good results to start. Compared to other brands I need less tweaking with the sliders... Canon colour science is excellent. Did some great 30x40 cm (12" x 16") prints with this camera (I am not pixel peeping but still prints photographs!).
    Connectivity is one of the easiest implementations. Download the Canon Camera connect app as the camera uses Bluetooth and Wifi. Once it is installed and configured it works on my iPhone without fiddling!
    At the price point I paid 565€ for the camera with 17-55 kit lens this camera delivers excellent results. There is no perfect camera... For starters and even experienced photographers a very nice camera to have. If you want larger heavier and more expensive Canon 80D, 800D/t7i, Nikon D7100, D7200 (stills shooting) and many others. Basic photographic knowledge pays more than the latest and greatest!
    Thank you Maarten for this great review from a user perspective.

    One thing I noticed with this camera is that the kit lenses have slower quieter motors that are better for things like vlogging and youtube so the autofocus isn't as quick as it could be with a different lens with larger noisier and faster motors.

    Now that I have had my SL2 for a while, I have found it to be a really good camera. I use a 24mm f/2.8 for the video mode (with external mic) and for wide angle stills. I use a 50mm f/1.8 for portraits and flowers to get that bokeh. I also have an old 75-300mm that I used to take a few pictures of the moon.

    Another very good -- and thorough -- review, Martin. I'm impressed by the image quality you got out of the camera, although I'm sure using the much higher-quality lens had a lot to do with that. All those pictures of beaches and sunshine make me wish I was there -- oh, wait, I WAS there. This is obviously a very capable travel camera, and it's even more customizable than the older Canon models. Personally, though, I found the SL2 a bit small to hold comfortably, so I imagine it would be uncomfortable for someone with large hands. And a white DSLR? I'll pass ...

    Also on the money about kit lens... I put a couple of vintage lenses on (Super Tak 55mm f2, SMC Tak 135mm f2.5). The camera is much better than the kit lens can show you.

    Primarily got this camera for a good entry level film shooter (1080p & 24fps is all I needed) and glad you mentioned the mic levels not being available on screen... that's one big annoyance. Shooting video I tend to mostly record audio separate though. It's honestly, IMO the biggest strike against the SL2 as a vlogger starter....no way to monitor your audio.

    Great video overall! IMO, your comments about the shaky video are cause you don't have an image stabilized lens. That and holding a heavy lens on the joby is a chore for anyone. Would expect different results with the kit lens or even the 24mm STM pancake lens.

    A fullframe L-lens seems to be a less than perfect choice for this camera. Of course nobody will debate the superior image quality, but size, weight, lack of image stabilizer and most importantly, the lack of wide angle capabilities (24 mm ff = 38.4 mm aps-c), not to mention price, all make this a very weird choice for an entry level camera in my opinion.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад +3

      That's certainly valid. I'm just concerned about the increasingly lower quality kit lenses that just don't deliver what the camera is capable of. This lens might be more suitable on a one-inch sensor than on APS-C. It makes you wonder what they're thinking.

    • @skakdosmer
      @skakdosmer 6 лет назад

      Well, Canon has made cheap, poor quality kit lenses for their entry level SLR's ever since I started in the mid 90'ies. But if you just moved one step up in camera, the kit lens would always be better. So nothing new in that, I think.

      Lack of image stabilizer on the 24-105 L? Mine has IS. For travel I'd probably use the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Not as wonderful as an L but still very good and is, of course, dedicated to aps-c.

    I’ve had the SL2 for six months and think it’s a fine camera for beginners like me. I use the Tamron 18-400mm lens and I generally get good results. My one complaint is Canon does poorly on explaining how to use the camera. The hard copy manual that comes with the camera has a small font size that is almost impossible to read. The manual can be printed on a computer, but totals hundreds of pages and is about the length of a large phone directory. Canon offers some video tutorials, but not nearly enough. For the price, I believe it’s a fine entry level camera.

      Awesome video! helped me gain some clarity. But maybe I can ask for some advice still from you?
      It's a long one...but detailed...I'd really love some help 🙂🙂🙂
      I've been using 1 G7x Mark 1 & 3 SJ4000 action cams for about 2 years now
      The canon does great in low light, however, the battery life and recording limit is horrible and I need something with longer record time because I can't interrupt my drumming to change batteries/start another recording and it doesn't start another video file after another (though I'm told some DSLRs and point & shoots Do start another file after 4GB--which I'm fine with)
      Reason for my purchase: 1 of my SJcams broke a few weeks ago.
      At first, I thought I should just get another action camera, then I thought maybe a point & shoot, then DSLR, now camcorder...basically, I have no idea lol
      If I find something that meets all my needs, I would probably end up getting 1 or 2 more of those cameras in the future to match the quality, BUT I don't really want another G7x Mark 1 OR 2 because it only shoots videos up to 16 mins in 1080p60fps and 30 mins in lower resolutions.....I need a lot longer video recording than that.
      One stipulation is that my studio is virtually pitch black when I record. Aside from the 2 Neewer 176 LED lights I use pointed on me and my drums. There is no other light source in my studio (ceiling lights are turned off)
      ^^^ I've researched and learned that action cams don't do well in low light and adding more light can even make a bad camera better and is probably my best option, but I also wanna keep that "infinite black background" look. So I may be getting 2 more of those Neewer lights and have 1 on each corner of my drum rug, but not if that will take away the black background look.
      What do you recommend? Action camera? DSLR? Point & shoot? Camcorder?
      BIG NOTE: This camera is strictly for video recording! Since I already have a g7x, I can get great pictures and I don't need something for that. I don't plan on selling my g7x because I probably won't get much for it in 2018.
      ---------------------------------------------------
      MY STUDIO:
      1. Black background all around my walls.
      2. No ceiling lights on.
      3. 2 Neewer 176 LED lights on myself and my drums at roughly 15-25% brightness (basically pitch black)
      4. Drums --- so there are reflective surfaces in terms of lighting.
      I DON'T NEED:
      1. Great Audio quality --- I get that edited
      2. Stabilization --- they'll be mounted on either a tripod or a boom mic stand.
      3. 4k --- I think 1080p60fps is enough for me to get a cool slo-mo effect (I could be wrong tho)
      I DO NEED:
      1. Price --- $300-$500 USD (Since I may need to get 2 or even 3 more of whatever camera I choose)
      2. Video Quality --- GREAT video quality in super low light with a pretty good Color Profile (Little to no Grain/Noise)
      3. Record Time --- NEEDS to be able to shoot video for 60+ minutes
      ^^^Bonus if it can record while charging.
      4. Settings --- Adjustable settings (WB, ISO, Exposure, etc)
      5. Ease of Use -- Easy to use & easy to get my footage off the camera --- I prefer just plugging my SD cards straight into my laptop the "old-fashioned" way.
      6. Auto-Focus --- I'd like to have continuous auto-focus for that price range (Drumming means my arms are flailing around)
      ***#2, 3 & 4 are must-haves.
      SOME OPTIONS:
      Action cams --> DSLR/Point & shoot --> Camcorder
      1. Yi Lite --- Should be coming in the mail tomorrow
      2. Yi-4k --- Should be coming in the mail tomorrow
      3. SJ7 Star --- haven't ordered.
      4. Canon EOS M50
      5. Canon EOS Rebel T4i / T5i / T6
      6. Canon EOS Rebel SL2
      7. Panasonic Lumix LX10
      8. Panasonic Lumix G7 4k
      9. Panasonic G85 (I'm told this has no video recording limit)
      10. Panasonic GX85 (I'm told this records multiple files once it hits 4GB - which I'm ok with)
      11. Sony Handycam CX405
      12. Canon Vixia HF R72 Camcorder (But there are many more that I have to research on)
      Is the SL2 the camera for me? Or a camcorder? Or even just an action camera? 🤔
      I'd really appreciate some help with this. I'm not a photographer/videographer by any means lol
      This stuff is confusing.
      Thank you in advance.

      Thanks for the detailed note. You can get a dark/black background even in a studio full of light as long as you have manual control over the exposure settings. Shooting in the dark won't do any camera any favours - particularly with action cameras that have no or minimal exposure controls. If the 30 minute limit is an issue for you, then either a true camcorder (Sony is recommended as their inexpensive camcorders like the CX405 (which I haven't reviewed) are better than the rest) or a Panasonic still/video model - many do not have time limits. Of the cameras listed, my preference for cost/quality would be a Canon Rebel, but the SL2 is also a good choice - however none of those meet your 60 minute + requirement. If you want slo-mo, you may be able to get something with 60frames (and good video editing software) but probably 120 is what you need. Hope this helps.

    • @JkDubbed
      @JkDubbed 6 лет назад

      Wow yeah that helped a lot. I've been told a camcorder may be my best bet.
      You mean I can get an infinite black background in my video even if the walls are green? lol
      This camera will be for drum videos. That's why I need 30+ mins. I can't start and stop a recording from behind a drumset.
      Panasonic still/video models as in the GH4, GH5, G85, GX85 and G7?? I'm told the GH5 has no recording limit, but that's $1,700...wayyyy too much lol
      Damn, really? The SL2 doesn't have unlimited recording?
      Out of those cameras, do you know which of them will start a new video file after reaching 4GB? Cause I'm ok with that too. I'll have multiple angles so I can just piece them together. As long as it continues recording after the time limit and I don't have to manually press record while I'm still playing drums...
      I have Screenflow 7 video software. Not sure if that'd be enough for slo-mo using 60fps.

    If you have the option,please pair the SL2 with something like sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 os hsm & let us know about the combo.I hears that lense is sharp; & the zoom range is also very useful.

      I have the SL2 and Sigma 17-50 combo and it works great. Not light but takes beautiful pics and videos. The sigma zoom is a little stiff, and the lens makes some noise when focusing in video, but nothing terrible its quieter than the older canon non stm lenses. However, the image stabilization works well and the images are awesome. Hope this helps.

      Thank you, I appreciate the kind words and the subscription. Those cameras would be roughly similar, maybe the SL2 has a slight edge - but it would be best to improve your low light performance by purchasing a lens with a larger aperture.

    I just bought one with a prime EF-s 24mm F2.8 lens and the kit lens, still quite far from having all those great lenses. I'm very satisfied, I had a Canon T6 before that was worse than my cellphone. I really hope Canon stop selling their "T" series, it's quite shameful for them to be selling such bad DSLRs, they are scamming a lot of people. They should be selling only from the SL2 camera and above.

      Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. It depends on the situation, and on your focus method, but nice points can be sufficient. If you are a focus and compose shooter, then it works perfect. However, cameras with more focus points can be better for fast moving subjects.

    Hi Maarten! Nice review! I like how your reviews cover almost everything about the camera, and feel more akin to a detailed 'overview' rather than a technical in-depth analysis. I have one question about this SL2/200D camera in particular. My friend owns one and he states that the JPEGS aren't as good as higher end Canon cameras with the 80D sensor. Do you notice any differences pertaining to colour rendition in that regard?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Thank you, I appreciate your very kind words. That's an interesting observation - but not one that occurred to me (I didn't compare side by side). I can't think of a reason that Canon would use a different algorithm for this camera. Have you checked with dpreview? They have a consistent test shot that they use which would reveal this kind of issue.

    • @NGameReviews
      @NGameReviews 6 лет назад

      Maarten Heilbron oddly enough, there was some colour difference in colour rendition looking at test shots. Nothing major. The 200D seems to have slightly lighter colours, the blues, reds etc seem a tad brighter.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      That's interesting and unexpected. I assume you're comparing in-camera jpegs with identical white balance and exposure, using the same color profile settings?

    • @NGameReviews
      @NGameReviews 6 лет назад

      Maarten Heilbron Yeah. I was looking at DPReview's studio test. Not sure if they let the cameras meter as is or if they set everything up to be the same but there was something a tad different. However, when looking at their sample photos of the 200D and 80D it seems to be right in line with what I expect. They both have that nice 'Canon' look to it. So any discernable difference would probably be negligible in real world situations. I'm not sure what my friend was talking about when he said the SL2 had inferior jpegs.

    Was definitely the best sl2 video I've watched, it was really good. I do have a question though; I'm interested in astrophotography and I figured that as long as I change the aperture to the widest I can, set the ISO higher than 1600 and set my shutter speed to about 30 then the pictures should come out well. Do you personally think this will work with this camera, or do you think I would have a better shot with another camera?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I don't know much about astrophotography, so can't really provide an expert opinion. I imagine that you do want a camera with a good high ISO, and a tripod. For the settings I'd experiment to get it right. Using the widest aperture will not get your the sharpest stars - smaller apertures provide better definition of small bright objects.

    It reminds me a bit of my old Olympus e-420 - nice and small - although with 10 years of improvements ( what? more than 3 focus points??? - what? video? ) though one thing about Oly was that their kit lenses were actually quite decent - the DP autofocus does make this quite a nice little carryaround with the right lens - perhaps the nice and cheap and small 40mm...well I'm now in for the Fuji system but when the lottery comes through....;-)

    I have 2 Sony cameras a a6300 and the a5100 and use them almost every day. However I don’t think I’ll buy another Sony. They are a pain to use. The standard basis for comparison would be to set up a scene, take images and then compare them in Lightroom. It's also best to have a setup where two tests done at different times would be comparable. Do you have an alternate method for low light comparisons?

      Maarten Heilbron i dont have them both...im planning to buy one though..
      Nikon seems to have better sensor According to DXO and whats funny is that the Canon 200D that has same sensor as eos M6 are rated differently..
      Eos M6 was rated to have good ISO performance upto 1300+ when compared to 200D that has 1100 ..nikon with 1400+..
      Im into low light long exposures and Landscapes as Primary so im in need of a camera that has good ISO+DR
      also canon seems to have cheaper lenses over all so its just very hard to pick any.

    Would you would recommend this camera for static vlogging, using the HDMI output with a capture card ?
    Is there a time limit on the videos captured ?
    I wonder if it's a good choice for a beginner setup, and a good option for filming co-hosted podcasts and live streaming.
    Do you think a regular camcorder would be better, for this use case?

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      I would not, as it can't output a clean image to the HDMI. It also makes the solution a little overly complicated. There are much easier way to to record static videos to a computer - although I'd recommend recording on the camera's SD card instead.

      For a beginner, virtually every interchangeable lens camera from a major manufacturer (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm) released in the last three years is a terrific choice for a beginner. Choose one from this large pool by narrowing the choices down using your wallet, your hand (which fits better) and your heart (which brand or design) to choose. I don't think that, for a beginner, any development released or anticipated in 2019 would be a game-changer.

    Hi Maarten --- Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and information so freely with all of us.
    Do you have thoughts or experience with the Canon SL3? Do you have plans of doing a review video for that in the near future?
    I have watched so many of your videos to learn about camera features and am getting close to making my first serious camera purchase. I lean towards three options (all Canon): The M50, the SL2, or the SL3.
    I am a classical percussionist and intend to use the camera for making RUclips-style tutorial videos for music students, real-time lessons/live-streaming, and of course, photography. I have watched your M50 and SL1 & 2 videos and am really curious about your thoughts on the SL3 (or if you think there's a better option for my needs that I haven't mentioned). Thank you, Maarten!

      @MaartenHeilbron  4 года назад

      Thanks, it was a pleasure to read your kind words. I've not yet reviewed the SL3, and not sure when Canon Canada will have one to lend me.
      For video the M50 (or any mirrorless camera) is a better choice than a DSLR, as all of its systems (including focus) are designed for live view use.
      Hope this helps.

    Are you traveling out to the San Francisco Bay Area any time soon? If so, let me know. (Unfortunately we don't have pirates and monkeys around here though...)

      SF isn't in my current travel plans, but you never know. You may not have pirates and monkeys, but you do have One Infinite Loop and great wineries. Last time we were there we had a most wonderful day cycling around the wineries of Sonoma. I'll keep you posted - but let me know if pirates are in the forecast.

      Yes, I'm trying a small fuji as my travel camera now and want a compact pkg. Still finding the little SLRs are faster and less fussy to use.
      BTW: B&H didn't send a tripod; with the Fuji I got a wool suit vest, mustache wax, 500g of yIrga chefe and a coupon for an Undercut Fade. (It's changed my life.)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Nice bundle! I can only imagine the excitement - although 500g of coffee wouldn't last a day around here. And my preference is Papua New Guinea Plantation AA green beans (I roast my own) - I wonder if those are preferences I can set on my account?
      I'll ask Eyvania about the undercut fade at my next appointment. Thanks for the chuckle.

    Hi Maarten. A very nice reivew. Would you say that the Nikon 5600 is far superior to the canon 200D when it comes to still photography or the margin is very minimal?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      I would say that all cameras in this class (which is "Nikon and Canon cameras with APS-C sensors) are roughly the same with regard to image quality. The difference will be lenses, and depending on the model, some additional features.

    • @farazakram4167
      @farazakram4167 6 лет назад

      That's very clear. Thanks a lot.
      On the subject of additional feature, does having lesser focus points (in case of 200D) put the camera at a disadvantage compared to the other?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      It depends on your style. I often focus and compose, so for most things a single focus point in the centre is enough for me. Clearly it helps if you're trying to track moving subjects, or don't want to recompose after focussing.

    In your opinion could this Camera be used to create you tube videos in small studio?
    My concern is no Audio Jack so how one would get around that if using as a primary camera for you tube videos.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      Yes, that should be fine. In the absence of an audio jack, you can either record very close to the camera, as long as the space is quiet. The alternate is to purchase a Sennheiser clip mic bhpho.to/2Fsm2JQ which I own and use regularly. (this is a B&H affiliate link, you pay the same low price, I get a small commission) You will need to record the files on an iPhone, and then match them in a video editor, which is much easier than you imagine.

    Hello sir, I am new to Canon so I don't understand how the autofocus works. I have a Nikon that doesn't have a built in autofocus motor in the body, so I have to buy lenses that have the motor in them... Is it the same for this 200d? Do you have to also buy lenses with autofocus motors?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      The autofocus system in all modern cameras is part of the mechanism in the lens. If you purchase a Canon lens that has autofocus, then it will work with any body that can autofocus. If you purchase a mechanical/manual focus lens then no body will be able to make it focus. Hope this helps.

    Ty for that useful video, and btw can I ask what's basically the difference between these 2 lenses:
    EF-S 18-55mm F/4-5,6 IS STM
    EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 III ?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the kind words. Basically, the aperture on the second one opens wider when zoomed out. Otherwise, I'm not sure ... there are too many Canon 18-55 lenses.
