Awesome video! Do you think it would still make sense buying this camera nowadays? I do have fairly decent range of Canon L glas and looking for something smaller to take into mountain adventures to save some space and weight in my backpack...
Yes, but the only weight you'll save is the camera body (not much). You might be better looking at another light model that doesn't need to use an adapter with your lenses, like the SL series. ruclips.net/video/33ndb6KQbx0/видео.html
Awesome, Short and to the point. I find some people are not taking the time to become familiar with this camera, and are too quick to sell it at a very affordable price. It is light and very versatile. I have the 22mm lens for this camera and it is sharp! I can't wait for the next generation. Maybe a full frame?
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I wish Canon were a little more aggressive with this series, particularly in providing a few higher quality lenses.
Hi Maarten, again a brilliant review as always. I just wanna know how do you compare between M5 and X-T20 ? they both have almost the same price range. How does its still and video compared to X-T20 ? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one. Thanks !!
Unless you're going to use standard Canon lenses and the adapter, my preference would be the X-T20, simply for lens quality. And although limited, the X-T20 does 4K video.
I like wildlife shots, some landscape and people need a recommendation for a camera, is Canon m5 too old, should I go to Canon 6ii or Nikon z50? Thanks! Great review as usual.
My old Samsung NX300 was touch everything as well - I love it. It's hard to find other camera manufacturers that can do this. Kudos to Canon - even though I find this camera perplexing. Excellent review, as always!!
Heard your name before by other esteemed YTubers but I'm surprised the Marty Scorsese in the thumbnails kept me away. Best review of the M5 in my opinion! Short, yet speaking about all the subtle features and dials(no one spoke as much about them as you which I found surprising in Dec 2018). I've mentioned this below and will re-iterate that Silent shutter mode, DIgic 8 and the Auto send to device WiFi features from the M50/EOS R would be excellent to have in the M5ii. And also, I don't want to bash on the EOS R. (Actually enjoyed using it on a BTS shoot for both stills and video but Full Frame is not my budget and weight really and it's too expensive to move to Fuji) and while I did get to accustomed to the controls really fast and it's not a deal breaker, why the R did not get the controls and dials from the M5 is beyond me.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Not sharp enough to provide the level of resolution that the sensor is capable of. In a detailed image, the small details will not be distinct.
This is so far the most informative canon m5 review I have watched on RUclips! Job greatly done! I'm planning to buy Canon M5 as a gift for myself before this year end. Thank you ^-^
Your videos are amazing! Thank you very much. I am a Sony a6500 owner looking to get into the Canon M series. Even though the Sony a6500 is vastly superior in certain ways, it's the little things that end up affecting me much more... ergonomically, the Sony a6500 is awful and is not fun to use. The dials on the Canon M5 look like a dream in comparison. That, and the relatively poor JPEG colors on the Sony are making me consider Canon's mirrorless offering.
That's very kind of you to say - although I think my ADD is showing ... I do strive for pleasant impartiality, although I don't usually think of it in those terms. I hope you don't mind if I re-use that.
Lol ! Thought nearly the same since i discover your reviews, found them "elegantly impartial" ! Btw Canon should make more serious primes for this system, Fuji proves you can do well with serious apsc primes and then this M5 could be a serious contender for the x-t2.
Life & Times of a MultipleMediaManager™ They're really cheap now! I got one brand new for $450 on eBay, and it's a steal for what you're getting. Honestly, even though the M50 has better specs, I like the handling and the extra dials of the M5.
i think that many people will find the flip down screen strange, but it is great for when you want to mount a mic on the top for vlogging. This however makes it a bit hard to use a tripod, but I have an adapter plate I mount on the bottom which offset the mount screw to the side and that makes it usable if a tripod is needed.
Terrific and informative review thanks! Just to comment that the issues you had with the on/off switch and inadvertent pressing of the video record button can both be solved by remapping the video button to turn off the lcd, which saves power and stops the video recording
Maarten, amazing review as usual. Would love your input on my situation. I'm looking for a mirrorless camera mainly for vlogging but would also appreciate a camera that can take a decent landscape shot and some street shooting. Also, reliability/durability is also very important. I've narrowed it down to the Canon m5/m6 or the Sony a6300/a6500. Which of those would you recommend or would or suggest something else. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Thanks for your kind words. I'd take the M5, simply because it has a flip screen that makes it possible to vlog. For as desirable as all the other features make the A6300 or A6500, the lack of a screen that faces front makes it unsuitable for vlogging.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I'd love that lens regardless of the camera I put it on, and they've just updated it. On the M5, it is a little unbalanced, but not unworkable.
Been a Canon shooter since '77', and while I have a huge arsenal of Canon glass (mostly 'L'), I am looking at down scaling to mirrorless by year's end. Frankly, Canon's 'M' offerings were intriguing at first, however after trying the M and M3, I have been less than tempted to give my hard earned dollars to Canon, despite the fact that I could use my EF glass on the 'M' body (via an adapter). Honestly, I am really lusting after Fuji's XPro 2 and XT 2, as well as Olympus offerings. Now if Canon were to come out with a true "pro" level mirrorless rig that would give Fuji and Olympus a run for "my" money, I might be interested in staying in Canon's universe, but they really to up their game. Oh and Canon and other camera makers, follow Fuji and Olympus's lead and for the love of God, put in a viewfinder on your range finders, I loathe shooting from the LCD on the back, so unnatural.... no wonder why these guys are killin it in the Mirrorless market.
Note that the M5 does include what I've heard is quite an excellent EVF (like you, I "loathe shooting from the LCD..."!). I think the M5 is a big improvement over the previous M series bodies, even if they still have ground to cover (4k video and some better M lenses please!).
This is the most comprehensive review for M5 on youtube, thanks for your efforts. I am considering to buy my first and the only one camera due to limited budget, choosing from 80D, M5 and A6300. 80D seems to be my dream camera with its large selection of budget lenses, but the later two offers compact body and light weight for portability. I'm afraid to be regret if I bought a mirrorless camera instead of DSLR. Is it a trend to buy mirrorless? Thanks a lot.
Thanks for your kind words. If it's a trend, it's a long lasting one. I'd call it a transition (and like the transition from LP to CD, not all needs are met and some will want to stay behind - for what are perfectly valid reasons). If you're afraid you'll regret the decision, by all means, take the 80D, a great camera which should last a long time. I'd rather see you buy one good lens than a bunch of budget lenses, but. However, if you are worried about weight, or think you might leave a larger body (like the 80D) behind - then take the mirrorless. Personally, (and I love my A6000) if I was shooting stills (and not so much video), I'd take the 80D. Hope this helps.
how does the body handle with larger EF lenses? i know most if not all smaller mirrorless cameras can get a bit unwieldy with large lenses, but wasn't sure if this body is better or worse. thanks again for your reviews, really appreciate them since way back when you reviewed the rx100m3.
Thank you for your kind words, and your loyalty. Well, yes, depending on the size of the lens, it does get a little unwieldy, particularly as the body doesn't have quite the same grip as a larger camera. That said, I did spend some time walking around with the 24-105 on the M5 and it wasn't an issue for me. I've usually shot with native lenses, so not really sure if this is better or worse.
Thanks for a pleasant review of a Canon camera, it's been a pleasure to watch. I was rather impressed by the M5 & have been reacquainted with my love of Canon colour. That's one thing also that Fuji doesn't have all to itself. The only thing for me that I don't like about it is the omission of weather sealing.
Great review. I find this to be a very interesting camera. Before I forget that bloody Lighting Optimizer is the first thing that has to be cranked down to low. The pictures and video look terrible with it left in its standard setting. As you covered there are many things to love about this camera. Very few in this class come with a mic input. The video and autofocus is very good, great touchscreen, etc. But the kit lens that came with the M3 was much better. I couldn't help feeling Canon does not have a lot of confidence in this line. It's been around for 5 years and it has only a few native lenses. Then there is the price, same range, to higher, as the Lumix G85. No contest there.
I truly appreciate your kind words, thanks for taking the time from vlogging to comment. While in most cases the lighting optimizer is not needed, when it is, I find it most helpful - but, yes, by default Off. Canon is really letting the M series struggle under a lack of lenses, particularly good lenses. The kit here is particularly lacking. However, using adapted Canon lenses (although it doesn't help the weight issue) is very transparent.
Thank you for this great review! I am going upgrade from a Canon T3i. I tried the Fuji xt10 and although the color and sharpness was wonderful, I didn't care for the menu ( although I now appreciate all it had to offer) and I don't know if my copy was not right but it wouldn't focus properly for all the world! I was thinking about the Sony a6000 but I really do love Canon. My question to you is, image quality. Is the IQ on the M5 comparable to say... the 70D or T7i or better? Thank you very much.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I would judge it as comparable - what's different is the camera size, lens selection, and to a very limited extent, the feature set.
Maarten Heilbron Thanks! I'm unable to walk long distances or climb due to a back injury so weight isn't really an issue. However, I really don't care for the LCD screen. I will work it out. Have a great day!
I'm sorry to hear that - the M5 does have a viewfinder, and there are several third party LCD hoods to make using the LCD easier, particularly in bright situations.
***** Thank you. I just wrote a very long response but deleted it. If I can connect with my phone, I might be able to give it a go for my macro shots. Thanks again for your time!
Great review, Maarten. Your unbiased facts are refreshing. How would you compare this to the M50? I’m looking for a great camera for travel, kids, vacations, sports, some video, etc. I do not have use for 4k video. Thank you in advance.
Maarten Heilbron, thank you. Do you have a recommendation over the M series for me? Things I like... -durability -view finder -changeable lenses -built-in flash -easy user interface -compactness of the mirrorless systems -touchscreen that is viewable in bright sunlight -manual camera features -great autofocus -easy manual focus across the image Thank you again for the quick reply!
Dear Maarten, I would like to know your opinion about a choice I have to take. For a general-purpose-camera, would you recommend, the canon M5 or Sony A7? Many thanks and please keep with your reviews! Excellent! Regards Carlos
I probably would not get the M5, as I don't feel that the lenses provide good quality. Personally I think that a full frame sensor is overkill for most shooters - after that each has their advantages - just don't take the Canon kit lens.
the auto focus seems accurate, but when i was using one the focusing wasn't take sharp when i zoom into an image it would be in focus you just can't see all the detail
is there anyway i canon gmail you ? or another platform so i can send you the images? mind i'm no pixel peeper but i noticed when i zoom in my 60d was sharper so if it was just the lens maybe i should use an actual canon lens on it ?
As a photographer, would you recommend the M5 over the newer M50? As in, for stills and not video/vlog. Looking to get a mirrorless, but have canon lenses so they could be used with an adapter on these. -The extra dials of the M5 seem quite useful, while the M50 seems a little dumbed down in comparison, perhaps meant more for automatic mode usage, and i heard the M5 has got longer battery life. Wondered how they compre in battery life, autofocus performance, and build quality. Thanks a lot, cheers!
Generally, Canon cameras with fewer digits are the higher end models. I'd take the M5, mostly for the reasons you've provided. I would judge all three of those factors to be more or less the same, but you might find a more detailed analysis of those issues at dpreview.
The M50 is described by Canon (on their official Specification pages) to have shorter battery life than the M5 since it uses a cheaper battery type (LP-E12 instead of LP-E17).
I HAVE An older SONY A33, APS-C A mount, WEIGHS LESS THEN 15 OZ WITHOUT CARD AND BODY.....This camera is light as mirrorless but how would you rate it's image sharpness against this canon M5 or sony mirrorless???.....I use pro grade lenses....... REPLY
The M5 only flips up and down (The new M50 flips around). The difference is the M6 flips all the up for vlogging and the M5 flips all the way down for vlogging
Great Video Maarten, you have my subscription! Looking to get an M5 as a main body to replace my M3 (still keeping the M3 though to reduce lens swaps!)
Such a great review that I subscribed as a result of watching it. Only thing I didn't like about this camera was the inability to power or charge from USB, as I was considering power options while backpacking. Other quibbles can be overcome. Well, I am also concerned about sturdiness.
I've had the 80D for awhile and needed a backup body for an up coming trip. I also wanted a capable camera in its own right for when the 80D would be a bit too large. So far my recent M5 fits the bill. With the same sensor, the resulting images should be quite similar. Being able to use all of the Canon glass is also a definite plus. I'm still in the process of customizing all of the menu options. The manual describes what those options are but is rather thin as to why you would choose one or the other. A detailed review of the menu choices and how they affect real life pictures would be great.
Thanks for the request, at this point I returned the M5 to Canon after the review, and while I agree with your comments about the manual, I don't plan to do another video on this model.
Not a good upgrade compared to the SL1? I find the articulating screen (despite not flipping out or up) is a big plus, as are the 49 AF points (just 9 AF points for the SL1), continuous shooting increased to 7fps (4fps for the SL1), and the inclusion of Wi-Fi / NFC / Bluetooth support.
I Have got a fujifilm X A3 instead of this as I see that I can get more lenses choses than the Canon plus I can tilt the screen 180' the battery life life not bad, it's for 1 day shooting out, overall seems ok but I don't know if this Canon or the Nikon j5 has better picture quality as they are almost same price range
Thank you for your reply. Can you suggest something that is optimal for learning techniques, establish a stepping stone (if all goes well)?@@MaartenHeilbron
I would suggest that there are some Fujifilm models (like the X-T2) that offer a complement of physical controls for aperture, shutter and ISO (they can also be automated when required). I feel that this design provides a better system for learning photography, as the controls and settings are always visible and easily adjustable. ruclips.net/video/3O3iaAAYJWg/видео.html There's a less expensive model - the X-T20 - which has fewer physical controls but otherwise embodies the same spirit ruclips.net/video/FczVOAC-ChE/видео.html Hope this helps.
Did I say that? For any given sensor size, the larger the pixel count, the lower the ISO - although this is a highly elastic issue, as the technology from manufacturer to manufacturer and generation to generation can be vastly different. As a concrete example - consider Sony's A7 series - the higher sensivity model A7S has a significantly lower pixel count than the A7R. Hope this helps.
That doesn't make it any less awkward. If you want to be able to react quickly, particularly with a mirrorless camera that needs to be turned off to reduce power consumption - IMHO the ability to hold the camera with one hand in a position that can also turn the camera on and then snap is essential. I can appreciate that the longer battery life of a DSLR makes powering on and off slightly less necessary.
Maarten Heilbron I usually have my camera on 'auto power off‘. It turns my camera off after 30 seconds of inactivity. All I have to do to power it back up is half press the shutter button. Not sure if that’s integrated into the M system though.
Maarten Heilbron I get your point. My Canon 100d/rebel sl1 has the same battery as some older canon mirrorless. It also doesn’t go very far on a single load. It has the power switch on the right though.
Was about to take the plunge and get the Canon M5 but they announced the Canon M50 today which I feel is what I will get now and addressed some of the issues you mentioned in this video about the M5
How to fix problem of rear curtain sync in Eos M5 using on camera external flash pixel x800c. Why it fires in the beginning but not in the end. Why it doesn't work in this model using that flash in tried in another camera of same model? How to solve it? Can anybody help?
Hi, am using EOS M5, and post recording am not able to view the video capture details, i.e Aperature, Shutter speed, ISO, can you guide me how to check..
@@MaartenHeilbron The best review ! Period. But, I have a question. I have always shot Manual mode with my other Canon DSLRs and I while looking at the subject in my viewfinder to compose the shot, I found "very easy" dialing and touching the aperture buttons. But I have watched some M50 videos and it is always mentioned that when shooting in Manual mode it is very hard to manipulate the aperture button. It is that true ? I'm asking, because I just bought the M50, but before unboxing the camera I want to be really sure that this is not going to be an issue for me. Please help me on that ! If I return the camera to BestBuy after opened I will be charge a fee. Thank you
Thanks for clearing that up :-) It's certainly not as easy as standard DSLR models. If you are a fully manual shooter, then look for a camera that has the two dials in the positions you're used to - otherwise you'll end up frustrated. Or be prepared to get used to re-learning your hand positions and movements.
Um, yes - if I understand the question properly. A mirrorless camera is always in live view mode. When a camera, like the A600 has that setting it is used to display all of the settings in the viewfinder (or LCD) image.
Mmm.. if i use canon eos M (1st gen) in studio(strobist), and use f11(iso 100) in M mode ..i can't see the the object in lcd, its dark (because it mimic the F11). But in A6000 i can 'Bost' the liveview (viewfinder or LCD) so ican compose the shot at f11 that i can see object event if its dark . did the M5 have that kinda setting? sorry if my english is bad :P
Yes, that is a trick that any mirrorless camera can do - because you are not looking at the real lighting using an optical path, you are looking at digital image on a screen, which reflects the actual settings.
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks alot for your valuable response, I needed an expert advise for it highly appreciate i will buy atomos shinobi 5" for my canon eos m5. 🙂
hi ... 👋 thank you, I bought shinobi 5" sadly there are no connecting cables or mount included however they added power adapter for not much use 🙂, I am happy with quality overall, it works fine but I don't have access to my camera screen and 'Q'uick option 🤏. Thanks again 🤝
@@israrhussainaquarius I guess that because cameras have so many different HDMI out connectors, it's not really reasonable to ship with them all. Hopefully your dealer or local electronic store had the cable you need - as well as the SSD drive.
I'm sure this camera works and well -- the built seems solid, as usual in Canon. The interface also works great. But still, I can't see myself buying these over a Fuji or even a Sony. The Canon M5, for me, still lacks some sort of a "big thing". I'm saving for a X-T20. I know Canon cameras work most of the time but for me, specially a mirrorless, has to be fun -- for example, the Fuji film simulations. What do you think, Maarten? Great video, as always.
Thanks for your kind words, they're always appreciated. I know! Everything is fine, but it's missing something that excites me, or makes me think this really is a cool device. If you're buying a mirrorless camera, and you're a Canon fan - or just want to share the lenses with your DSLR bodies, this is the right choice and it is a good choice. I think you're right though, the rest of us were looking for a little more excitement.
Even if I "grew" my photography skills on Canon, I've never owned one and feel confident on trying Fuji. I'd like the X-T2 but, body only, it is out of my price range. Though, the X-T20 seems like a solid and good alternative. Seeing this video help me decided -- and your Fuji reviews, of course. Thanks for the answer and keep the excellent job!
Sony and Canon's approach is not materially different. Both make one series for mirrorless and another for SLR bodies. Use of SLR lenses on mirrorless bodies requires an adapter.
The best video review you can find about this camera.

Great video Maarten.
But there is no 5 axes stabilisation in the camera. This is only a software mode for video which leads to a crop.
You'll have to discuss that with Canon - they call this 5 axis stabilization. A crop for video and/or stabilization is fairly standard.
😉
Some cameras have a crop in 4k mode. Unfortunatelly. But not in 1080p like the M5......
Or do you know another modern camera with a crop in 1080p?

switch between sRGB and AdobeRGB? Thank you so much for responding. I have worn out the owners manual trying to figure that out.
Manual doesn’t mention it, but always happy to help.
Good video, as always from you. How much did you not like the 15-45mm kit lens? Not sharp enough anywhere? Poor corners? What was it?
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Not sharp enough to provide the level of resolution that the sensor is capable of. In a detailed image, the small details will not be distinct.
This is so far the most informative canon m5 review I have watched on RUclips! Job greatly done! I'm planning to buy Canon M5 as a gift for myself before this year end. Thank you ^-^
So nice to hear - thanks for taking the time to comment.
I just got one and wanted to better understand my new camera's capabilites, you nailed it with this review! Thanks so much for this great video
Always a pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. If you can get past the woeful lens selection, it is a nice camera.
20 minutes ...wow ! That would have taken me at least 40 minutes and I probably would have missed some of it. Great Review and pleasant Impartiality !
Thanks for your kind comment, appreciated. I agree that Canon could make both more lenses for the M mount, particularly higher quality lenses.
Excellent review and breakdown. I'll wait for the price to come down, but definitely want one...
Thanks for taking the time to post such a nice comment.
Life & Times of a MultipleMediaManager™ They're really cheap now! I got one brand new for $450 on eBay, and it's a steal for what you're getting. Honestly, even though the M50 has better specs, I like the handling and the extra dials of the M5.
@@AbdonPhirathon Thanks for this update, appreciated.
i think that many people will find the flip down screen strange, but it is great for when you want to mount a mic on the top for vlogging. This however makes it a bit hard to use a tripod, but I have an adapter plate I mount on the bottom which offset the mount screw to the side and that makes it usable if a tripod is needed.
Good suggestion, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Nice job, how do you think this camera would work for landscape photography?
Thanks for the kind words. With the right lens, I think it would be very good for landscape photos.
Terrific and informative review thanks! Just to comment that the issues you had with the on/off switch and inadvertent pressing of the video record button can both be solved by remapping the video button to turn off the lcd, which saves power and stops the video recording
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated. And thanks for the tips.
Very nice review. Is it worth buying a new M5 in 2020 with the better canon m50 available for around the same price ?
Did you just answer the question?
Maarten. Firstly, great and informative video. I currently own the M5 and have been considering the 24-105L. How did it fair up for you on this body?
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I'd love that lens regardless of the camera I put it on, and they've just updated it. On the M5, it is a little unbalanced, but not unworkable.
this is the best review of M5 until now.. it's been a pleasure to watch.. thanks for the pretty details :)
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Been a Canon shooter since '77', and while I have a huge arsenal of Canon glass (mostly 'L'), I am looking at down scaling to mirrorless by year's end. Frankly, Canon's 'M' offerings
were intriguing at first, however after trying the M and M3, I have been less than tempted to give my hard earned dollars to Canon, despite the fact that I could use my EF glass on the 'M' body (via an adapter).
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think we all wish the M series, was great instead of good enough.
Note that the M5 does include what I've heard is quite an excellent EVF (like you, I "loathe shooting from the LCD..."!). I think the M5 is a big improvement over the previous M series bodies, even if they still have ground to cover (4k video and some better M lenses please!).
Thanks for adding your thoughts.
Thanks, that's very kind of you. Love your advice.
Always happy to help.
how does the body handle with larger EF lenses? i know most if not all smaller mirrorless cameras can get a bit unwieldy with large lenses, but wasn't sure if this body is better or worse. thanks again for your reviews, really appreciate them since way back when you reviewed the rx100m3.
I'm trying to decide between this camera and the Eos M3. Any thoughts??
Didn't get a chance to review the M3 - but it seems to me the major difference is the viewfinder.
I appreciate the kind words. While weatherproofing is nice to have, there are certainly many ways to protect your camera under inclement conditions.
Thanks again for your time!
always happy to help - best wishes
I wish they used the menu layout from the original EOS M instead using the powershot menu layout for this camera.
An excellent suggestion, thanks for commenting.
I really liked this review. Very honest. Been looking at this camera for while and this has nearly made my mind up ☺️👌🏼
Always nice to know I've been able to assist. Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
Thanks for such a comprehensive explanation and analysis of the camera.
I appreciate the kind words, thanks!
Great review, Maarten. Your unbiased facts are refreshing.
How would you compare this to the M50?
I’m looking for a great camera for travel, kids, vacations, sports, some video, etc. I do not have use for 4k video. Thank you in advance.
I'm not a fan of the Canon M series, mostly because their lenses are low quality. I do hope to review the M50 soon.
Maarten Heilbron, thank you. Do you have a recommendation over the M series for me?
Things I like...
-durability
-view finder
-changeable lenses
-built-in flash
-easy user interface
-compactness of the mirrorless systems
-touchscreen that is viewable in bright sunlight
-manual camera features
-great autofocus
-easy manual focus across the image
Thank you again for the quick reply!
I'd look at Panasonic and Sony - their cameras in this price range are feature rich and there are lots of high quality lenses.
Maarten Heilbron thank you!
Always my pleasure.
Hi Maarten. Your review is very nice and comprehensive. You made me one step closer to buy this camera. :D
That's kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
We watched your video from beginning to the end. We enjoyed it a lot and we learned something. Thank you for sharing. Take care.
I really appreciate your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
You are welcome.
Nice job. Thank you. Not sure Canon's heart is in mirrorless.
I appreciate your kind words, thanks. Yes, for as appealing as the camera is, the lack of commitment to M lenses is a limitation.
Dear Maarten,
I would like to know your opinion about a choice I have to take. For a general-purpose-camera, would you recommend, the canon M5 or Sony A7?
Many thanks and please keep with your reviews! Excellent!
Regards
Carlos
It is your decision to make, but I think it's the A7 - no contest.
Thank you very much! Please keep posting videos! They are great and helpful!
Thanks for your kind words, they're always appreciated.
Should i get this or the 80d? Or even go for the full frame sony a7ii?
I probably would not get the M5, as I don't feel that the lenses provide good quality. Personally I think that a full frame sensor is overkill for most shooters - after that each has their advantages - just don't take the Canon kit lens.
the auto focus seems accurate, but when i was using one the focusing wasn't take sharp when i zoom into an image it would be in focus you just can't see all the detail
That might be the lens ...
is there anyway i canon gmail you ? or another platform so i can send you the images? mind i'm no pixel peeper but i noticed when i zoom in my 60d was sharper so if it was just the lens maybe i should use an actual canon lens on it ?
My email address is in the description for each video.
The small lens selection would be a not starter - for this cute camera...
I know, right? I mean there is a adapter for EOS lenses, but.
@@thegrayyernaut thanks for your assistance with this question
There are a few people on here that have adapted a flash bracket vlogging with full view of the screen.
Thanks, that's a tip I should try.
So have you found a way to adjust to the Delay you spoke to at 2:55 mark? or is there an update to the software that has fixed this.
I have not.

I'm sorry, I have no experience with the A33, so not qualified to say.
Hi Maarten, this is really the best review. Thank you for taking your time for creating and posting this video.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Wait... the M6 DOES have a flip screen. It flips up, to not interfere with a tripod.
It swivels both up and down, but doesn't flip around to allow shooting from the front like the M5.
The M5 only flips up and down (The new M50 flips around). The difference is the M6 flips all the up for vlogging and the M5 flips all the way down for vlogging
@@Petrolhead66 Thanks for the clarification.
This is the most thorough I've watched. Thank you for taking the time.
So kind of you to say, thanks very much.
Hi, great review first all! So would u recommend me to sell my 600D with the 18-55 and the 55-250 lenses to get the M5 with a Tamron 16-300mm lense?
Sure, I guess, it's smaller and lighter. Wait - Tamron makes an M-mount lens?
Thank you for the great post. This was straight to the point, very detailed, and extremely helpful!!
How kind of you to take the time to comment, thanks.
Excelente review, as usual. Thanks Maarten.

Any quality camera. The challenge is lighting the painting.

How kind of you to say, appreciated.
Great Video Maarten, you have my subscription! Looking to get an M5 as a main body to replace my M3 (still keeping the M3 though to reduce lens swaps!)
Thanks for the kind words, and the excellent news - I'm always happy to have a new subscriber.
One of the best reviews! Bravo!!
Very kind of you to say, thanks.
Such a great review that I subscribed as a result of watching it.
Only thing I didn't like about this camera was the inability to power or charge from USB, as I was considering power options while backpacking. Other quibbles can be overcome. Well, I am also concerned about sturdiness.
In this category, sturdiness isn't a prime requirement. You could buy several batteries ...

Is it going to be a good step up from canon rebels SL1 for photography
I would not consider this an upgrade from the SL1.
Maarten Heilbron ok thanks. How about the Fuji tx2?
One of my favourites, I recently reviewed it.
Thank you for adding your thoughts - I appreciate the additional input.
Hi. Can you adjust the focus speed in video mode , like the 80D?
Pretty sure that's a "no", but I can't check, as I returned the camera to Canon after the review.
Is the EOS M5 a plastic frame or metal? Thank you.
I don't know. Check wth Canon.
With a larger sensor, I would say the Canon should be better - but that's not including the lens. The Canon M lenses leave something to be desired.
Thanks for the review. It looks like a feature laden camera
Always my pleasure.
Always my pleasure.
Hello Marteen, I am trying to decide on my first camera. Would you recommend this?
Among others, certainly. It's relatively small and easy to use, yet has lots of potential for creative use as you expand your photography interests.
I feel that this design provides a better system for learning photography, as the controls and settings are always visible and easily adjustable. ruclips.net/video/3O3iaAAYJWg/видео.html
There's a less expensive model - the X-T20 - which has fewer physical controls but otherwise embodies the same spirit ruclips.net/video/FczVOAC-ChE/видео.html
Hope this helps.
Maarten my question, how does ISO numbers correlate to megapixels? kinda confused....
U didn't say that sorry, it's just a random question...thx for your reply..
Always my pleasure.
But, their spec's mention that there is an option?
Which option are you referring to?
Great review, helped a lot, thanks!
That's always nice to hear, thanks for commenting.
Left hand power is a thing with higher end canon cameras. Most of them have it.
Yup, as do we all. With mirrorless cameras, I find it's necessary to be a little more aggressive in order to save battery power.
Maarten Heilbron I get your point. My Canon 100d/rebel sl1 has the same battery as some older canon mirrorless. It also doesn’t go very far on a single load. It has the power switch on the right though.
I find it less of an issue on DSLR-style models, as they typically have larger batteries and lower consumption.
great video but im sure the M6 does have a flip screen but it flips up for selfies instead of downards
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words and the clarification.
Was about to take the plunge and get the Canon M5 but they announced the Canon M50 today which I feel is what I will get now and addressed some of the issues you mentioned in this video about the M5
Let's hope so. I've added it to my "to-do" list.

The best review so far
That's very kind, but "so far" ?
Or be prepared to get used to re-learning your hand positions and movements.

can this mirrorles use for studio photo? (kinnda like A6000 ; Live view ON/OFF)
Um, yes - if I understand the question properly.
Yes, that is a trick that any mirrorless camera can do - because you are not looking at the real lighting using an optical path, you are looking at digital image on a screen, which reflects the actual settings.
great review.. clearly explained. 👍👍

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the kind words.
kinda suks they made a new mount for the new mirror less cAmera. Sony has kept Their

Sony and Canon's approach is not materially different. Both make one series for mirrorless and another for SLR bodies. Use of SLR lenses on mirrorless bodies requires an adapter.
