    Great review.. So many people knock this camera without even having any experience using it.. They forget about form factor, ease of use. great adaptable lens selection... You can create wonderful art with a pencil and paper but wannabe photographers geek photo nerds need there specs and troll the net when they should be out creating art...

    • @agro0
      @agro0 7 лет назад +6

      for photo it's fine, for video not so much. It's a joke how they always leave stuff away although they even implemented it in some of their OWN FREAKING CAMERAS. Why no headphone jack? Why no audio levels on screen? My 70d can do it, why can't the M5 do it? Why no god damn focus peaking? It's 2017, others have this stuff for more than 5 years and I'm not even joking...

    • @mdrewpix1
      @mdrewpix1 7 лет назад +6

      We didn't mention it but the M5 does have peaking and it is really useful. I can do pretty decent focus pulls with the 150-600 using it. Not having the audio levels on the screen is inexcusable, though.

    • @agro0
      @agro0 7 лет назад

      Mike Drew That's good to hear. At least they start to implement that since it's really useful. But still so much stuff that they already did right and now do wrong all of the sudden...

    • @mallred4347
      @mallred4347 7 лет назад +2

      Your point is still great - gets old with Canon leaving features/capabilities off their cameras. For enthusiasts, they need a Much better native lens selection. Why adapt lenses (which don't focus quite as well) when they can get the 80D for less (no adapter). Non enthusiasts will probably just stick with their phone.

    • @mdrewpix1
      @mdrewpix1 7 лет назад +10

      Canon-mount lenses work flawlessly with the adapter on the M5, which is included with the camera, by the way. While I would like to see more M-mount lenses, the truth is that you have a far larger selection of Canon- mount lenses from Tamron and Sigma as well as Canon than pretty much any other manufacturer.

    I absolutely love my M5! I now happy I can use my L glass and have a smaller system with smaller lenses if I need to. Love the touch screen and just makes me want to take photos. Im selling all my fuji stuff. The auto focus and touch screen and the fact I can use my old canon glass did it for me. Thank you Canon - at last. and great review btw

  • @mikefoster6375

    I've been using the Canon M (Original) since it came out. Had to buy most of the lenses from Asia, but the prices were good. Buying this M5 was a no-brainer for me. I love this camera. Really easy to use as a photographer. I'm not into video so much so 4k not needed. The ergonomics of the M5 are what make it so usable for someone with arthritic hands and the weight is amazing even when using EF lenses. Sometimes it gets front heavy so I use a tripod which negates this problem. All in all I wish people would try out this camera before relegating it to their scrapheaps, really unfair. For what it was designed to do, it works great. Judge it for what it can do not for what it wasn't. Thanks for letting me vent.

    As a Nikon user I am super happy about the M5, it puts a lot of pressure on Nikon to start making mirrorless cameras which has APS-C and hopefully FF sensors. Cant wait to see Nikon's answer even though I am sure it will take time a year or two before we will see a good mirrorless camera by Nikon.

    Thanks for the review. Notes taken about video recording feature:
    - Touch screen works even with glove on
    - Digital and lens stabilizers for video
    - wifi connection to smartphone
    - no headphone jack
    - no audio level in main screen
    - no 4k video recording
    - compared with Sony 6300 with 4K but no touch screen
    - lousy articulate screen
    - compared with 80D the better camera for video

    Late to the game, but I just bought one of the last new M5s (18-150mm kit) to lighten up my hiking pack because I'm not getting any younger. I love my R, and there were times I missed it, but this little camera performed extremely well on a recent hiking trip. No complaints from a photographer (I know that videographers might have a different take.). The 32mm was a nice addition.

    Nice review. I am thinking about getting this as a second camera to my 6D. I really appreciated seeing this review with someone who has used previous versions. With the tripod blocking issue, how about getting a dual camera mount bracket so that your camera can sit to the side when you have it on the tripod and want to see the whole screen. It might be worth the 8 bucks on Amazon.

      So. Sony is releasing more mirrorless native glass. If Nikon gets into ASP-C mirrorless could there at some point be enough demand for a Sigma Art ASP-C series that would be Nikon whatever, Canon M, and Sony alpha mounts? That would incorporate the actual reduced length and diameters these cameras could work with? I don't fully understand why micro four thirds lenses are so small and then we stick full frame lenses on ASP-C mirrorless cameras with an adapter.

    Chris, regarding your comment about Metabones... the Sigma 150-600mm on the a6xxx is awesome but with the MC-11, and as good with Metabones. I know it's not a comparison video but since you guys "did" mention the a6300 and a6500, it's only fair to bring up features that the M5 doesn't have... like Eye-AF, which is a HUGE advantage

    I have to say I was impressed with the camera in my hands on experience. Does it compete yet? I guess it's an option now. (Blech. Sorry I threw up a little saying that) To have it rely on efs lenses is defeating the purpose of a great mirrorlesss camera system though.

    I recently lost some photos from a faulty SD card.
    I can't understand why camera manufacturers like Canon don't put two card slots inside all of their mirrorless cameras.
    Micro SD cards are nearly equally fast and cheap as standard SD. Two micro SD slots don't take much space and are so important.

  • @Serenoj69
    @Serenoj69 7 лет назад +3

    Would like to see how it compares to the G80 actually.....Since that one is cheaper, has 5 axis IBis. It does have 4K, it does have weathersealing, it does not need adapted lenses since all FLs are covered pretty well. And oh eejj....it does have that swivlescreen too. It does have almost everything you miss on the Canon but in the whole video Panasonics G85 which is not mentioned...once.

    • @adrianpocea2287
      @adrianpocea2287 7 лет назад

      Serenoj69 it doesn't need adapters but it needs LENSES. Which are not cheap. And if you did photography before you most probably already own a bunch of Canon or Nikon glass. Panaleica, don't think so. Or, if you don't, you can find them in hundreds, dirt cheap, on craigslist or ebay. Micro four thirds, don't think so. And again, micro four thirds doesn't hold a candle in stills to the aps-c cameras

    • @Serenoj69
      @Serenoj69 7 лет назад

      I go for capable, camera's with good lenses. A system that is portable. M5 wsimply cannot come close to my 12-35, 35-100 and 100-400 Panaleica setup when it comes to size and weight. THe IQ difference is minimal. If it matters to you or to others I am glad you can buy another camerasystem. But I am glad I rhave a GH4 ad now an EM1mkII with those lenses. If you cannot get excellent pics with those lenses and bodies the problem is you. Not the cam.
      And if you are really exacting about APS-c and best IQ out of it, a D500 or D7200 Nikon simply offers better IQ than any Canon APS-c cam currently does.

    • @adrianpocea2287
      @adrianpocea2287 7 лет назад +1

      Serenoj69 it is not about the iq, which might be superior in micro 4/3, it is about the "looks" of the stills. Sensor size, which is perfect for video (super 35) is crippling the looks at lower focal lenghts, getting everything in focus, much like an i phone picture. also, 20 mpx on 4/3 vs 24 mpx on aps-c shows, trust me, in the final rendition.You have more depth of colors, the looks are more rich, creamy, a better overall look in general. In 4/3 sensor you have to go over 50 mm and under 2.8 to get any shallow depth of field

    • @Serenoj69
      @Serenoj69 7 лет назад

      Long story shot. No. I have shot with D800e for a long time with its best glass and the sensor is better, colour, gradation, DR and certainly the noise too. But it is not giving it another look, just better IQ. I have Em1.2 now and its HiRes shots are better than the D800E can do unless it is action or so which cannot be done with Em1.2. But even basically, the 20 MP output of the thing is really good. Really I have little more to wish for.

    @kevindiossi 7 лет назад

    I'm really surprised this video was as positive as it was. I thought TCS would destroy the camera for missing features. I shot with it and loved it...but at $1000, it puts itself in a market surrounded by much more capable alternatives. M glass needs to seriously get a refresh with at least 2 more pancake primes and a quality zoom or two. The adapted EOS glass works flawlessly, however. It would just be nice to have native glass that retained the small form factor.

    Chris, you missed another feature where Canon skimped compared to 80D
    Canon 80D can shoot MOV 24fps at 90 mbps or MP4 60fps at 60 mbps, best M5 can do is MP4 60fps at 35 mbps and MP4 24/30fps at 24mbps

    • @mdrewpix1
      @mdrewpix1 7 лет назад +7

      Yep, ALL-I would sure have been nice and no problem to include. And since we're talking video, the default Sharpness settings are grotesquely excessive. Make sure you turn it down a couple of notches before you judge the video quality. Any decent editing system will allow you to add it back in. Here's a video I did with the M5 before resetting the Sharpness levels. vimeo.com/195412893. Looks way too sharpened for my tastes.

    I bought this camera as it totally fit the bill for my V-logging. I had the 80D, loved it and really wanted the smaller form factor/lenses for travel Vlogging. Camera arrives and I find out Canon has disabled Video shooting using the WiFi function!! I was so pissed off at Canon! I mean why, WHY CANON?! The 80D has WiFi video Trigger but they just take the video function out of the WiFi for no reason at all! This is touted as a Vlogging cam! So why?! Anyway. I returned the camera... I'll have to wait for the GH5 to see how the AF works on it. We'll see. I just cant understand Canon any more.

    The M5 footage at 8:08 looks sharp. Was that recorded using the kit lens?

    It was between this and the Panasonic G85 for me. What kept me from the M5 was the flip down screen was pretty much useless on a tripod, the electronic stabilization severely degrades the already lackluster video quality, and there are no real fast primes yet for that system. I don't like adapting glass, so Canon lost out on this one.

      Vegetable Police you will not get anywhere near the same stills quality out of you g8x versus this one

      Adrian Pocea Have you seen the latest samples from dpreview on the M5? They look like they were shot with a phone. I don't think it wouldn't be tough to beat that image quality lol. There are no native fast primes, I don't see how a tiny increase in sensor size would ever make up for good lenses?
      Plus, I'm a youtuber, I shoot video. Stills are an afterthought to me. Although I'm pretty sure I could outdo anything shot on native M5 glass with my Mitakon 25mm f0.95.

      Vegetable Police you have nothing to do with photography. youtube vlogger, got it. that makes sense. you are wasting your time watching Canon reviews. way better options for vlogging, including a go pro, an iphone on a tripod

    • @vegetablepolice
      @vegetablepolice 7 лет назад +2

      Adrian Pocea First of all, it's never a waste of time watching The Camera Store TV, that's blasphemy ;)
      Why you hatin? I almost got the Canon. I wanted to upgrade from the Canon G7X but the Panasonic stole my heart. I'm not a vlogger by the way.
      I love Canon, but the Panasonic G85 slaps it around for video. Fully articulating screen, 4k, in body image stabilization, better pre amps for external mic, and way better lens choices as of right now. If you look at dpreview's video test scene comparison, the Canon M5's 1080p is super soft compared to the G85, and when you turn on electronic stabilization it's even worse. Trust me, I wanted to love that camera.
      The only thing good about the M5 is it's auto focus, and I always manual focus anyways, so I'm not sure there is one thing better about the Canon other than it's larger sensor, which is offset by the fast prime I use.

    I compared the M5 with kit lens against the Sony A6500 with 16-70 f4. The Canon touch screen and interface win. The Sony captured more in focus low light shots than the M5 using sport modes on each. Also the 6500 shots had more detail and were sharper than the M5 with kit lens. So if you want to capture your kids than try the 6500 sports and inside with the low light settings.

    When can we hope for/expect a GH5 vs. A7sii vs a6500 shootout???? PLEASE!!! Video motion focusing (sports/weddings) is a Must...and tough on the GH4... Wondering if the GH5 solves the shortcomings yet...?

    Did Mike say that the EVF does not do live exposure preview?
    That's been one of the defining benefits Canon Live View over the competition for nearly a decade now, and all of a sudden it's not implemented in their first "serious" mirrorless body?

      Hi guys. I've had a lot more time to work with the M5 since we did this video and I've learned a lot more about it. It turns out that my problem with the viewfinder was that the brightness level wasn't adjusted properly so it looked much darker when I held the camera to my eye. I've since found out that you have to look through the viewfinder when you adjust the brightness for it. I thought that the brightness level setting adjusted both at the same time. I now have the viewfinder set at maximum brightness and the rear screen set two levels darker. That pretty much evens them out. Guess I should have read the manual!
      And yes, the M5 does do exposure preview. And quite well, too. Matches pretty closely to what I see in Lightroom. Additionally, you can set it to show the histogram as you're shooting which is a big help as well.

    I've noticed that spending extended hours in the cold has had a negative affect on my battery life, both in my phone and in my camera. Like my devices said they were dead, and stopped working, but once we were in the car and warm again they suddenly had battery life again. Did you notice any significant loss of battery life in that weather? Have you ever seen that happen? Do you know a good way to prevent/fix that?

    Thank you Chris for offering a review of this camera, haven't seen very many reviews yet! I have a question though, I'm stuck between the M5 and the 80D for video. The 80D's AF sensitivity can be adjusted to slow or speed up. Does the M5 offer this feature?

    Looking forward to see your review/opinion of the GH5! BTW, any idea about a new Sony a7s camera coming out soon? I have been wanting the a7s2 for a while but it is too expensive... hoping a new model will bring the mark 2 model down in price.

    It feels like a strange bird in Canons nest. Its like they had to make a mirrorless but also cripple it at the same time. Whom is it for i wonder. Don't get me wrong the camera has quite a few strong points i mean dual pixel focus, works flawlessly with canon glass and adapter. Well... thats it... its not really competition to any other mirrorless out there really.

      I think it's a great buy. It has image quality on par with the Canon 80D. I haven't seen a comparable mirror less cameras with a Touch screen yet - and this great for focusing with the screen like on a smartphone. Another bonus is f you already have canon lenses, this would be a good buy.

    Would you guys say that with the M5, the EOS M system is the fastest system for adapted glass (especially EF)? Because even Micro-Four-Thirds is extremely slow with Four Thirds lenses.

      Using the supplied Canon adapter it's just as fast as any other camera in its class. I use it with the Toking 11-16, the Sigma 18-35 and 150-600 as well as all the Canon lenses I have, both EF and EF-S. It's no 1D-X Mark II but it's plenty quick enough.
