    I'm way behind the curve on this one, but since I'm not getting any younger, to lighten my hiking pack from my Canon R and lenses, just this summer (2020), I purchased the M5 in a great deal that B&H had going on to get the stock off the shelves. I'm not a videographer, but I can understand why that demographic would not be wild about it, but as a photographer, I found it very capable and WAY lighter in the pack and for carrying around. The 32mm f/1.4 works beautifully on it.

    Nice overview. You posed the question what Canon DSLR shooters would get with the M5 vs another Canon DSLR. In my opinion the biggest gain is the EVF with exposure simulation.

      Why don't you record the raw audio on your end, so you don't have the Skype audio compression? And then add it in after recording the podcast. The compression is more annoying than anything else.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 лет назад +3

      I do also record the audio at my end, but it's proving hard to sync it with the video side of things as it's being done over a call and there's all sorts of timing issues. We are working on improvements though...

    Adapting full frame lenses to small bodies was the foundation of Sony mirrorless .When you take into account that the Fuji 16-55 , 50-140 & 100-400 especially are relatively large I would argue they are not a compelling alternative to the M5 or even a 5D Mark 4 & equivalent lens , smaller lenses they may do. The ergonomics , touchscreen & menu system will also give it a an advantage over Fuji & most Sony rivals which I know many camera users don't get on with. On the whole I really like the M5 & I agree if you have a 5D4 for example it doesn't offer quite as much.
    Given it will soon be Summer in the Northern Hemisphere I suppose that you won't be needing as many coffees?

    Your new book looks interesting, Gordon, but I just wondered, did you shoot all the images in auto or just some of them?? Just when you said there is no shame in using auto and to an extent I'd agree but for me today as a photographer, its not something I would see myself go back to using. Nothing wrong with shooting JPEG only though especially given Olympus and Fuji both do great jpegs straight out of camera, if you get a great image, editing or no editing, then good on you.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 лет назад +3

      All the images in the book are JPEGs out of camera, but there's a variety of exposure modes that I use. Personally I rarely shoot in full Auto. I mostly use Aperture Priority so I can control the depth-of-field. I often also apply exposure compensation if I want to deliberately under or over expose. If I'm after a motion effect, I shoot in Shutter Priority, and if I'm shooting at night, or doing long exposures, or even some sports, I shoot in Manual. But again my philosophy is to do what works for you, both in terms of achieving the desired result and also the process and workflow you enjoy.

    If the sensors are the same for the 80D M5 and M6 then the dynamic range tests at DXO would be the same and they are not. The 80D does best then oddly the M6 then the M5 as I recall.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 лет назад

      Remember the image processor is a factor too. They may be different.

    • @johnjon1823
      @johnjon1823 7 лет назад

      Whatever it is it's kind of odd I suppose it could be within the measurement error of DXO tests as well. Or possibly effects due to slight sensor tweaks or lenses or filters in different sensor batches -it is interesting though.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 лет назад +1

      @@orshanti I would get the 15-45mm as it goes wider and the lens is smaller. But it depends how much you want a zoom that can go longer on the telephoto end. if you photograph animals or sports, you'll prefer the longer lens. So the EF lenses are big and heavy, and the EF-S lenses aren't "sexy"? So it seems you don't like any Canon lenses, other than, perhaps, EF-M? It's a valid viewpoint, of course, but not one that I've heard before. Personally I find my STM EF-S lenses very exciting, and since the M5 is an aps-c size camera, if you don't like most of Canon's aps-c size lenses, maybe you're not the right person to review this camera. What I've seen in reviews of other mirror-less cameras is that AF doesn't always work enormously well with adapted lenses, but you don't touch upon that question, so I'll have to assume it's not the case here. Otherwise that would have been perhaps a more relevant objection to the low number of native EF-M lenses.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 лет назад

      I like plenty of Canon lenses - check out my review-in-progress of the EF-S 10-28mm at cameralabs.com for instance, and that's a low-priced basic build model. My frustration with Canon is that there are no high-end EF-S lenses. I'd like to see an EF-S wide or standard zoom with L build quality and weather-sealing. As it stands, none of the EF-S lenses have weather sealing or tough build, which implies Canon doesn't consider its APSC bodies as professional as their full-frame ones. Of course you can mount any EF lenses on an APSC body, but I'm talking about lenses designed for the APSC format only.

    • @skakdosmer
      @skakdosmer 7 лет назад

      10-28? I take it you mean the 10-18 which I own. (A 10-28 would be nice, though). You have a point there: I know the 7D2 is weather sealed, so Canon should probably provide weather sealed EF-S lenses too, although it doesn't really matter to a 70D user like me. But maybe they think their weather sealed EF lenses should suffice. As a professional it's only natural that you see the world through your professional spectacles, but the vast majority of photographers are amateurs like me with no ambitions whatsoever of becoming professionals. To me it's not vitally important (knock on wood) with lenses that are built like tanks. I think amateurs are perhaps generally a little more careful with their gear, and light weight and modest size is more what we're looking at. If I need weather sealing, I'll use my little Olympus Tough TG4.

    I think there is not fair, when you compare the quality of the picture. M5 with 18-150, when Panasonic with Leica 25 1.4 and Fuji with 35 2,kit lens compares with prime lens,WTF! What's more, the aperture is also not the same. Are you fucking kidding me? It seems that content of your video is good, but in fact, it's not preciseness, could you explain that?

I'm just trying to produce detailed content that I would want to consume and I'm happy there's some people out there who enjoy it too and support me sufficiently to make it commercial. I have had higher view counts on some videos though if you look back through my collections. Some have had tens of thousands, some hundreds of thousands and some over a million.

  • @justininfrance

    Oh dear, this business of out-of-camera jpegs. Spend 1000 bucks on a camera, 1000 bucks on a lens just to produce a jpeg to upload to Instagram or Facebook? It's nonsense. I love you Gordon, but anyone who cares about their images has to shoot Raw, period. Anyone who edits their images in LR has to shoot Raw, period. Very often it's impossible to get the image right in-camera. With respect you are primarily a journalist, not a photographer. A professional reviewer of gear, where the image is actually a secondary by-product, fine, one can do as one wishes. It's really not a question of snobbery, it's a question of getting the best image possible and for that you have to shoot Raw. Period.

    • @justininfrance
      @justininfrance 7 лет назад

      You are quite right, light, composition and subject are more important than equipment, just as the lens is more important than the camera body. But it is no coincidence that many of the great photographers, both past and present, use large format or medium format cameras, because they care about the final image. I don't mean getting 'Likes' on Instagram but actually printing out images to be displayed on a wall, or for publication in a photobook. These people use traditional darkroom techniques, dodging, burning, as well as more creative techniques, emphasising certain forms in the photograph or suppressing certain colours, etc. Techniques dating almost back to the beginnings of photography. For digital users these techniques can be replicated in Lightroom. Many things cannot be done with filters. Jpegs can be manipulated in LR but to much less effect since the majority of the pixel information is lost. It's like eating a sandwich with no filling. Is there a respected, exhibited photographer who shoots only in jpeg? I don't know of one.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 лет назад +12

      My advice is to simply use the technique which delivers the result you want. If you want or need to shoot RAW and post process then go ahead, but I find I can achieve the result I personally want straight out of most new cameras, so there's no need for me to post process. And believe me, the quality required for this book is far higher than an Instagram post. I've also printed many of the images at A2 and larger and they look great. And with respect, this wasn't a self-published book, it was commissioned by a publisher of photography books, with a significant investment on their part so they obviously thought my standard was sufficient for them. But have a look at it and see what you think. Ultimately all art is personal.

    • @richardrivera2233
      @richardrivera2233 7 лет назад +2

      Gordon, I have to agree that RAW and post-processing is not for everyone and most people would be well served by using JPEGs. Kudos on your book! JPEGs from most cameras especially the M4/3 have improved significantly over the past few years. Interestingly, Art Wolfe in his new book “Photographs from The Edge” says that he will use whatever is appropriate or he has available to make a photo, even an iPhone. Again, congratulations on your book! I look forward to seeing it.
