    VERY GOOD TUTORIAL! I'm very impressed. I just bought my New Canon M5 with the 18 - 150mm lens kit but haven't gotten the chance to carefully set it up. Your tutorial is exactly what I needed to step by step set it up to my comfort. I do have some years of experience but haven't been shooting for some time now so I'm a bit rusty on all this. You brought it all back...Thank you.

    Thank you for this video, I picked the M5 because I can only walk on crutches, so I need my hands free and don't want a 3Kg Camera around my neck, so far I'm pretty happy with it, have all the M lenses except for the pancake one you mentioned, but will add it soon. Sounds really convenient. Thank you again for this free video, learned a few things about stuff hidden away in the menus that I didn't bother checking yet, great work. now off to watch all the other videos mentioned in this one.

    That 22mm f2 is the best lens in EOS M lineup. Very charp and all around usage.

      my research shows the 22/2 is best in class ....the £800GBP Sony Zeiss 24mmF1.8 is almost as sharp...and the Zeiss is not a pancake lens

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 7 лет назад +6

      Yes, but the 11-22 is also nice. The 22 mm needs more skill because it has no IS and the depth of field is shallow. One often needs to control both aperture and shutter speed. With the kit lens one can shoot with P ad not really worry. I really have the 22 mm always with me. I also like the fact that it has no distortions.

      I asked some "camera experts" and they helped me with that choice. The thing is that with the m5 you have much more and much cheaper lenses (also with the adapter) than with the fuji.
      Another advice that helped me is to just test the camera in a camera store because the x-t20 is (for my hands) too small.

    • @heythere6983
      @heythere6983 7 лет назад +2

      I was thinking the same, go on 500px or Flickr , search canon m5 and the lenses you might buy, do the same for the fuji and you will see the difference, the canon lenses seem basically the same and theres more flexibility price wise. The fuji lenses if you wanna buy primes get pricey quick and their zooms arent that different in terms of image quality, the fuji tends to underexpose their photos so although your iso on a fuji may say 200 its really higher than that, I heard so much bad talk about the m5 sense line up I over looked the lenses right away but when I started to actually look at pictures I realized it was just as good. The zooms arent ridiculously "fast" but they ARE sharp, the fujis are barely faster and really not any sharper (unless you go for the really expensive ones, but you can just get sigma lenses that are even better if you want to spend the money) but are way pricier, go check out the photos. idk if its too late but hey maybe someone will find use in this comment.

    • @Diesel6Power
      @Diesel6Power 6 лет назад

      If I'm not late... Without going in details, it's an excellent camera. Since you're new to photography and obviously interested in Canon mirrorless offerings, look up M50 as well... A bit easier to operate, not that M5 is complicated once you get the hang of it, cheaper, with almost identical features as M5 and some additional ones (eye tracking auto focus)...or just pick M5...you can't go wrong with either of them.
      I use M5 and loving every moment of working with it.
      Happy shooting

    I've spent 4 weeks researching what camera I want to purchase for my budget etc. Then spent another two weeks looking at tutorials. I must say for information purposes I can rate you in the top 2!!
    Although I cannot see on your channel a tutorial for the camera I brought. Canon M50. Is that because its similar to the M5?
    Either way I'm learning lots. Thank you. ;-)

    Hey Tony!
    I just traded in my canon g7x mark II for the brand new mirrorless EOS M6-I really like the camera a lot, but as a somewhat novice photographer who mainly shoots pics of my dog for his hugely popular instagram, I simply don't think I understand all the features/benefits/abilities of the camera.
    I made the switch mainly for the larger sensor to shoot more clearly at faster shutter speeds, and to have the ability of using a hotshoe.
    I would love to see an overall review and guide video to the EOS M6-since your videos like this are always the absolute best!
    It would also be cool to compare it a little to the M5, since after my research it seems that a lot of people don't understand why canon made the M6 which is virtually the same camera as the M5 without the built in viewfinder.
    I think the M6 seems to be a hot topic and there isn't much content on RUclips because it's so new! I think it would be a good video for views!
    I appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos, they're awesome and so well produced.
    Thanks!
    Joey

    Hi Tony and Chelsea! greetings from Portugal.
    I'm willing to move to the mirrorless system. I watched this review of the Canon M5 (very deep and good for instance) and now after viewing other reviews of the Canon M50, I ask you what camera I should buy? The M5 or the M50?
    I'm not a pro, I have an old Canon 400D (for about 10 years... old mate), and a few lenses: EF 50mm 1,8 STM, EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, EF 85mm f/1.8 USM, EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM, EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM and the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.
    I want to move to the mirrorless system, but as you see I want to keep the investment I've made on Canon lenses.
    Pictures are an important issue, but I want to start in the video world.
    For now I know that an Canon R is far away for my knowledge and a quite expensive investment for my propose.
    So your opinion is important to me due your experience., to choose what to buy.
    Thanks in advance
    Best regards

    Hi Tony and Chelsea! This comment is unrelated to the Canon M5, but I hope you can help me. I got an A6000 because I wanted a more compact camera and happened upon a great deal. However, I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the focusing options and features this camera has, so I feel like I'm not really using it to its full potential. I've been looking for a full, in-depth video tutorial going over each focusing option and feature that fully explains how they work. I've seen your overview tutorial, but I think it would be really helpful to get a video that really goes to town into exploring this camera's features, seeing how it's so popular. That's it I guess. Thanks!

    I would really like to see Tony test how well the DPAF on the Canon M5 focuses the Sigma 18-35 and the Sigma 50-100. I like both lenses since they are very sharp but they suffer from problems with back/front focusing and there also seems to be some problems with focusing consistency. I wonder if they would be more accurate with DPAF than they are with the phase detect focusing system in a DSLR?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, they're wouldn't be focus accuracy problems with the M5... But the M5's focusing is generally not as quick as a DSLR, you need to add the adapter, and those lenses are so heavy that they don't balance well on the M5. But it's still a very workable combination.

    • @1210EEEE
      @1210EEEE 7 лет назад

      Interesting, I guess the focusing speed might be good enough for my purposes so I would definitely want to test this combination if ever get the chance to test the M5. You make a very good point about the balance of the setup though, I use those lenses on a 100d/SL1 now and that is already a pretty poorly balanced combination so it would be even worse with the M5. Thanks for all the great videos you guys create!

      Some information to think about for you. Recently i send my 18-35 for calibration in Sigma service center along with my D7100 for use as a reference camera. I took a week and a bit of money (20$ for me. you may have different price). Haven't fully tested it yet but it seems to focus a lot better and more consistent.
      P.S. My 50-100 have some issues too not as big as my 18-35 had. i will send for calibration sometime later too.

      If you're not using an EF M lens (i.e. you're using an adaptor with another lens), you won't have the "Focus Mode" option show up. It will only be there for EF M lenses (that fit without adaptor). However, you won't need the "Focus Mode" option, since you should already be able to manually focus after autofocus without changing a setting in the camera.

    Love your videos! I actually watched this before I bought the M5.. And I know this isn't a customer service line but.... I recently bought a full manual lens the Rokinon 12mm F2 for EFM mounts... I have it on but for some reason it won't let me take pics or even hit the record button. I've seen others use this lens... Noobie question. But do you have to disable the electronics or something since it's manual lens? If so how??? I've literally poked my eyes out in the menu system trying to get this to work. #sendhelp #yourockifyouanswerthis

      Robert Condol try to setup the camera : Menu> Yellow tabs> Cust Fn.> Release shutter with no lens (since the rokinon lens is a manual lens)

    I recently purchased this camera and tried it out with my Sigma 150-600 C and my Sigma 100-400 ( I know small body, big lens but what the heck worth a try) Here's my problem when mounting the lens on my M5 and M50 body the Image stabilization stays on constantly unless I turn off the camera This doesn't happen on my DSLR's 7D and 80D anyone else have this problem?

    Wow. Totally disagree with your advice RE: memory cards. Buying a generic class 10 card will really harm your experience with this camera. 95MB per sec Extreme Pro from SanDisk is a good starting point.

      Well, I specifically recommended only using cheap cards when you aren't shooting rapidly... so how is that going to harm your experience?

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup it depends if the camera will allow you to take photos whilst the buffer is emptying to the SD card.
      When my kids are doing something interesting, I might reel off 8 or 10 shots in a few seconds, trying to catch their happy faces amongst the activity. I may only be shooting at 2 or 3 frames per second, so I'm definitely not shooting rapidly, but it gets super frustrating if the camera locks up for 10 or 20 seconds after I release the shutter button, so it can save those pictures to a slow memory card.
      Missing shots due to my Sony a6000 doing exactly that caused me to upgrade to fast memory cards, which has been much better. Does the Canon M5 have the same problem?

    56:15 is Toby Nortgrup his real name and Tony Northrup is just a stage name??? Maybe Tony has multiple passports & just gave us one of his spy alter ego's.
