    The 5-axis stabilization DOES work with non-stabilized lenses. It does not require the lens to have stabilization.
    The M3 ALSO had focus peaking as well as punch in. This is not the first non Cinema camera to include it.
    Why did you criticize the design of the camera for looking similar to a SLR when the the Fuji XT-1, XT-2, Olympus EM-5, EM-10, EM-1, Panasonic GH4, G7, etc. ALL have similar designs? Does it have to be a rangefinder style to not receive ridicule?
    Sensing a negative tone toward Canon in your last few uploads...

      well you only have the screen in the back.
      he was saying he didn't understand why a mirrorless camera has been designed with space for a mirror view finder that won't be in the camera.
      the problem right now is canon and nikon can't survive with the current camera sale rates.so if they went bust what are you going to use?
      mobiles maybe?
      I'm seeing reviewers saying the hasslebald camera mod, doesn't take good pictures so don't bother getting it even though it's 10x optical zoom and a proper camera and its people who don't know how to use a camera, that aren't getting good pictures with it.

      Tony wants to switch to Nikon - it seems he's mostly trying to talk himself into finally doing it by talking about how bad Canon are.

    Hey Tony! When you get a chance, please test this camera with the adaptor and a few EF/EF-S lenses. Many of us would love to have a Canon EVF body to use with our existing lenses, but of course only of it works properly. Thanks!

    Tony, if you want your internet to work on your phone when using the app, you have to turn on Hotspot on your phone, then have the camera connect to that network. This method is also a lot more reliable than using the phone app to connect to the wifi on the camera. Still feel archetic but it's a much better "work around"

    • @MegaSavay
      @MegaSavay 8 лет назад

      Other than that my Phone is usually logged in via UMTS, LTE or GPRS anyways. when using NFC the problem is also almost non-relevant...
      i usally tap to connect...choose the images to transfer on the body (S2 Option is almost instant and more than enough for Social Networking)...and when finished with the whole process i disconnect via the camera...and the phone finished reconnecting with the previous WiFi before i`ve even picked it up again unlocked it!
      It never bothers me if the WiFi is disconnected...especially out in the field where mostly is no WiFi available anyways.

    The bump on the top is to make room for the 2 x 3 aspect ratio LCD and the view finder in the middle on top of it.
    If they moved the view finder off center to the left then it could be smaller like the A6xxx series. Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic all have the same issue when they have a 2 x 3 LCD instead of a 9 x 16 aspect ratio I believe.

    I've seen in another video saying, that the Bluetooth should enable geotaging from your phone,which has GPS module. So the camera does not have GPS,but if you connect it to your smartphone,you can have it that way.

      Tony, Canon has had Focus Peaking from beginning of time. All their professional C cameras have Focus Peaking and cameras before that had Focus peaking (SD cameras!) They simply don't put it in there on purpose. They've claimed it consumes resources but as ML showed that even their basic Rebel line could have Focus Peaking without a problem. So, it's by design. That's why they've fallen behind because others at Sony and Panasonic included it 4 years ago!

    • @nichrodriguez

    If you're a hobbyist looking to upgrade from an older Canon camera, and you have Canon mount (EF, EF-S) lenses, this is an excellent alternative to the tank-like 80D. It's not perfect, but it can take excellent photographs and videos, and it's (relatively) easy to use, especially if your already familiar with Canon. I agree with Tony that the M lenses aren't the best, but the kit lenses from other manufacturers aren't so great either. This review seems to concentrate hard on the negatives, but I've looked at all the other systems in this prices range closely to replace my aging 60D, and I'm sticking with Canon and the new M5. I'd suggest looking at the lengthy review by DPReview for a more balanced (and frankly better) evaluation.

    The Panasonic GX8 doesn't just have in-body stabilization. They also have lenses now with stabilization, where you can combine the two and get even more stabilization than either of the two solutions offer on their own. Highly underrated camera.

    I get what you're saying with the viewfinder, but thats pretty much the norm. Its either rangefinder style or dslr style with these mirrorless cams. Your comments make it sound like thats something new. Pretty sure that gh4 you're using has that same bulbous evf.

    • @MattFromSMM
      @MattFromSMM 8 лет назад

      ok maybe not bulbous, but my point is they all have that damn hump that mimics the dslr look other than the rangefinder styles

    • @Sharlinator
      @Sharlinator 8 лет назад +1

      And the EVF needs optics too. It's not like putting a bare LCD screen a centimeter from your eye would work.

    • @MattFromSMM

    Looking forward to see how the M5 compares to the new Fuji X-T20 for still shooting. For me the decision comes down to lens ecosystems. And for the M5 to be competitive IMO, you will have to use the EF adapter, which however adds additional weight to the M5, which is already a little heavier than the X-T20.

  • @Roshambo3
    @Roshambo3 8 лет назад

    Hey Tony, I shot with the Nikon AF-P 18-55 lens on a D5500 the improvement is huge! But Canon still has the lead. There's a slight electronic noise when the AF-P focuses. The worst part is the zoom noise as you go from 18->55 and back again...the noise is picked up by the internal mic and it's loud (doh!). Because I prefer the handling of the Nikons over the Rebels I'm sticking with the D5500 and the AF-P lens has breathed new life into the D5500, especially liveview photo and video.

    Tony's video are generally pretty good even in 1080p but he does have a
    flair for being over dramatic especially when it comes to Canons
    offerings. He recommends the GX8 over the m5 even though he states that image
    quality would better on the M5.

    I prefer this type of selfie screen over the 80D ones. I very often find myself in the situation just to tilt the screen a bit up or down for hips and overhead-shooting. With the M5-screen this is done in a split of a second. With the 80D it is way more clumsy.
    And for vlogging on tripod it is just good enough to get an estimation to see myself if I am in the frame or not.

    Personally, If I were looking for an ASP-C camera on a budget around the price of this, I'd rather have a Sony a6300 or maybe the GX85 for great M4/3 camera. After seeing this, there are a few issues I have:
    1. The lens mount. I know as you said you can use an adaptor, but it would have been far better for them to have used their normal EF mount on these EOS M cameras, then you could use any Canon mount camera like you can with their DSLRs. I know as you said doing that would negate the benifits of a small camera, but still, its a better option. Or at least gave it an EF mount and made the EOS M lenses EF lenses, then you could also use them on their other ASP-C DSLRs.
    2. The 5 axis stabilisation. Why is it digital and for video only? That is not 5 axis stabilisation works Canon! Digital never beats physical sensor stabilisation.
    3. The screen. Bad design idea and I can see why other cameras don't have the screen flip downwards. All cameras like this should just have a proper tilt flip out screen as its the best design choice IMO.
    4. No 4K video.
    5. No Zebras
    6. No C-Log

  • @nichrodriguez
    @nichrodriguez 8 лет назад

    I've questioned Canon in their own channel about the 5 Axis Stabilisation and this was their reply: ''
    5-axis Digital Image Stabilization does exist in-camera. Blurring from horizontal, vertical, yaw, pitch and roll are all digitally minimized in-camera. There are even instances where optical image stabilization is added to work in conjunction with the digital image stabilization for maximum effect. We hope this helps clarify things!'' I just can't take their reply seriously...

    As far as video, I still plan on upgrading to the 5D Mark IV for stills but I've accepted that I'm just going to use a separate camera for video. I don't mind the smaller sensors for video. I don't know why anyone would buy this camera. I'd be more excited about the iPhone 7 Plus camera than this. It's true, it's not the camera, it's the photographer but if I was a beginner looking to buy a thousand dollar camera I'd get a 6D used for a grand (which is better than a 5D Mark ii) or that 80D. I don't know why anyone would choose that camera.

  • @patrickfitzgerald2861

    There are millions of non-professional Canon APS-C camera owners worldwide, most of whom own one or more good quality, reasonably small EF-S lenses designed for that size sensor. Just add the adapter to this body and you're good to go. As for 4K, well that's fine for you Tony, but my PC overheats rendering 1080p files, and I know I'm not alone. Most of us will not miss it, given all the other features of this camera. I'll wait awhile for Canon to work out the kinks, but I'm getting one of these.

    7:57 There's a workaround for it if your phone is already connected to a WiFi network (say, your home router). Use the "Infrastructure Mode" in the Canon cameras. This will allow you to connect your camera to the same WiFi network as your phone and this way you phone is connected to the camera AND the Internet at the same time. For the camera Access Point Mode, no luck for me too...

  •  8 лет назад +1

    I think it will be excellent, in terms of handling probably among the best, easily beating the A6300. While the Sony has the edge on image quality, that is on paper, everyone that looks on images from the Sony can see that color handling in real life is far below what Canon produces. Sonys video quality is great, but it does overheat and the lack of touch screen makes focusing much harder, often forcing you to focus manually. The M-system's weakest points are the lack of good native primes. All the available lenses are actually good or excellent, but apart fram the 22mm f/2 there are no fast native primes, although you can get samyang lenses etc

    Something great on the EOS M system is that 22mm f/2 pancake - there is a use case to have a compact setup with that lens and then the ability to throw on something bulky at other times.
    That said - my 6D + 40mm pancake isn't THAT much more bulky really... (but the M3 + 22mm has much higher WAF)

    So much good content here but just a few comments:
    - I consider Tony's technical prowess to be among the best on the web, but his frustration with transferring photos with NFC and wifi (at least the way Sony has implemented it) makes me rethink that assessment. In practice, It actually works simply, quickly, and incredibly well and without any of the issues Tony mentions causing any difficulties. IMO, bluetooth and Nikon's snap bridge is a cluster because it's slow and it's all or nothing with little control.
    - At 14:08... mirroless cameras absolutely can be compact, however, if you're trying to make your camera compact you wouldn't put a zoom lens on it (and definitely not the biggest one in the system, lol). I get it though, people think "travel" when they talk about compact cameras and to some people, that means 1 massive zoom lens. Me, I like to be unencumbered when relaxing and enjoying my vacation so I take a compact prime and maybe throw another in a bag. Same for everyday use. The zooms come out when necessary, not by default.
    Cheers.

    I actually completely agree with this review. This camera did nothing more than bore me since I already have the 5D Mark IV. Lemme get this straight, they stripped down the 5D Mark IV but gave focus peaking to the M5? Aren't the lowered tiered cameras supposed to be the guinea pigs and those premium features supposed to make it to the higher tiered cameras? I defend the 5D Mark IV for a lot of features not present, but this is a slap in the face. And I tested the HDR video mode on the 5D Mark IV, and it was ok. Would of had been better if it was 422 8bit for grading like I can do with Magic Lantern on the 5D Mark III.

    Good point about the 5 axis stabilization, I do wish a 4k and a fully articulated screen was included, but otherwise they addressed what I wanted, which is a view finder, faster auto focusing, better ergonomics (save for that drop down "selfie screen" and additional lenses...

    Informative video. Clearly a major upgrade in Canon EOS M series. Best looking Canon camera ever. Nice and boxy looking. Major-EVF, touchscreen titling LCD and 80D image quaiity and af, 7fps. Still not there-DR still less than Nikon by a full stop, no fully articulating LCD like 80D (this would have only added a few mm at best-major omission, price is about 25% too high. Nice step forward but not quite there for the point I noted. Love the exposure dial-for my work it is major.

    As a left handed user, I really don't understand why you give props for GX8 EVF position. As you point out, if you use your left eye it will be much worse. I would call it unusable when you use your left eye. So I would count a middle EVF as a big point towards the M5 and against GX8. For a left eye user the GX8s EVF will more or less useless.
    The M5 solution is much better in this regard since it is usable by everyone, not only the right eye users (which I assume is the right handed majority who never seam to think about us left handed).

      Looks like the "in body" Image Stabilisation is actually "in firmware" and only works on video. It's not exactly "in body" like other cameras, which works for both stills and video.

    As an EM-5 user, I feel the M5 could have been competitive three years ago. The rear controls look too close to the EPL-5, which is a letdown (one of the major reasons I switched to an EM-5). The addition of a third dial, and APS-C sensor could have given it a real leg up over MFT. As someone shooting 99% stills, the Eos M lens selection is saddening.
    Any idea if Eos M has the communication between camera and lens that Oly/Pany do? The ability to have lens corrections made quickly is seriously important in my book.

    I can see the trolls complain about how you are making a video without having the camera but they are missing the point. Although this camera is a huge step forward for Canon mirror less it still shows a general hesitation on their part to create a truly competitive product. Fuji gives firmware upgrades to keep older cameras current, most other manufacturers of mirrorless cameras do as well. Sony may make you buy apps but at least you do not have to buy a new camera. Canon (and possibly Nikon as well) are still working in the old hardware marketing mindset where any new software improvements usually mean you need to buy the next new camera to avail of it. Magic Lantern showed that Canon actually cripples some of their cameras through firmware to force you into a more expensive model. Bad form Canon.

    I would buy the Canon M5 in a heartbeat and attach my L series lenses to it. I actually love the design of it, it DOES look like a really small DSLR and i like that too. It does have a bit of a retro look to it. Very appealing. I could care less about 4K, 1080p suits me fine.

    You can pick up the full frame Sony a7ii used or factory refurbished all day long from Ebay for $1400, it beats the EOS M5 like a red headed stepchild. The Sony A6300 beats it too plus has 4K and cost less. It's good to see Canon trying, but they need to try a lot harder.

    Do you think the disappointing video capability is limited by firmware or hardware? My guess is that the hardware can do better but the firmware is the limiting factor.

    Would you recommend this + adapter if I already own a bunch good EF-S / EF / Sigma Arts lenses? Size is not the main concern for me, I do care about the EVF and touch screen focus drag. I found picking the single focus point on my 80D to be a bit slow. As a result, I tend to miss shots more often than I'd like.

    Given how so many vloggers use a GorillaPod (or something similar) to hold their camera at arm's length while out and about on their adventures, that flip-down LCD isn't going to work too well for that potential market segment.

  • @KentuckyMan30

    This is a very interesting and intriguing camera. However, the native lenses are all terrible. You would HAVE to adapt EF glass to this thing if you wanted anything decently fast. At this price point and starting from scratch, I'd rather pour money into a Fuji and swim around in that ecosystem of awesome lenses. An X-T10 with a much better kit lens (18-55mm 2.8-4) is $1,100. Tack on a fast prime like the 35mm f/2 for about 350-400 dollars and you've got a great starting kit.
    That being said, if I shot canon DSLR's and had good Canon glass, I might be very intrigued with this as a travel camera (as long as adapting the lenses wouldn't make it too big).

    Amazing camera! Every new feature is VERY exciting! One question though:
    I am planning to buy the Body-Only kit of this camera since I already own the 18-55 and 22mm EF-M lenses. And on Canon's website it says that the Combination IS will work best when using either the EF-M 18-150mm or the EF-M 15-45mm lenses with the lens firmware update. So, my question is, how will the Canon EOS M5 image stabilization work with the 18-55 and 22mm EF-M lenses? Will the 5-axis IS work together with the lens stabilization? And if so, how will that combination IS perform in comparison with the combination IS while using the M5 with either the 15-45 or the 18-150mm EF-M lenses?
    Thanks in advance,
    Gabriel Ludwick

    Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't lens stabilisation better than IBIS? Reason I ask is that I think that IBIS could make photos out of focus as the sensor is moving and changing the plain of focus as it moves around

    Looking at it from a more consumer perspective, I have a hard time justifying this camera with the Panasonic G80 coming right around the corner. Yes, the difference in sensor size needs to be taken into consideration, but when you take into account price, build quality (or maybe I should say weather sealing), video specs, and lens selection then I don't really see the M5 competing.
    That's really unfortunate as well, because the M5 looks like its ergonomics are fantastic. Seriously, every camera on the planet should have three control dials/wheels.

    Question: If Canon added a vari-angle LCD (like the 80D) would there be any reason to purchase an 80D. My answer: Probably no reason. This also leads me to wonder if Canon could easily bring out a FF Mirrorless with EF mount and vari-angle touchscreen LCD. That would bring up another question: Would anyone want a 6D any longer. Answer: Again-probably not. This leads me to conclude that that only reason Canon hasn't fully gone to mirrorless is their non-mirrorless would no longer be useful for most.

    Hi Chelsea and Tony. I have a question for you, maybe you can answer. I would like to upgrade from my 60D to 80D. I have Canon EF 50mm f1.4, Canon EF-S 15-85 and Tamron SP 70-200 f2.8 lenses. I am a free-time enthusiast photographer. Do you think it would be wise for me to wait and get the M5 + the EF(S) lens adapter instead of the 80D? I don't take videos, so I basically need all-purpose Still image camera. Thanks in advance froy our answer.

    Generally like your review, but why are you so down on Canon when you haven't even gotten your hands on the camera yet? I know you're experienced with Canon's other products, but with this you're just judging specs off paper.
    The only thing I really want to know is if the M5 will shoot more that 350 shots on a full charge. Sony is a real let down in terms of battery life (and you have to buy a separate charger?!) and the camera is notorious for overheating when shooting 4K. No thanks.
    You keep banging on about 4K, S-log profiles, etc. when you mention that the M5 is a prosumer camera. That said, most people (myself included) have zero use for this tech. As a Canon user I was about to upgrade to the 80D but am now giving this M5 serious consideration.
    I do agree it's a shame Canon decided to fit a drop down rather than fold out screen and I'm also annoyed to hear that the 5-Axis IS is little more than marketing speak. The latter was a big selling point...
    Looking forward to your more detailed review once you actually get your hands on an M5.

      I have 785 images in lightroom from the M3 taken with a single battery with a single charge (charger and spare battery were in Arizona while we were at Disneyland). The M5 uses the same LP-E17. 350 shots without flash is not an issue at all. I doubt it will be an issue on the M5 either.
