It’s 2022 this was filmed 9 years ago and this was by far the most straight to the point and informative video I’ve ever seen. Thank you for the help! 🙏🏻
The other thing is lens hoods make you look like a pro even if you're not. I've had plenty of people clear the way for me so I can get in the perfect position for a shot. I'm always gracious and thank them of course but perception is reality. Battery grips help too, makes the camera look bigger.
Ahhhh...... But when they see the coke can, They don't want to run up and snatch your cam away from ya.. They'll just think it's a cheep cam not worth steeling ;)
@monkeyman522 That was a good story you shared in a good way and at right place :) So it's good thing to get a hood, so people clear the way for us, give us respect (they don't even care to know whether the person carrying the camera knows how to use it or not) :)
Although true, I find that most people will do that whatever you're using, even a mobile phone. I think it is because almost everyone takes regular pictures these days now that there are some many ways of capturing images, meaning that there is more empathy towards photograpers.
Canon if you're listening? If I spend $1,000 on a lens you should throw in a $5 piece of plastic that only cost $1.37 to make that you in turn still way over charge $30 for... is the full statement there.

Another reason to use a lens hood is to help provide protection of rain hitting the lens for unwanted drops that can obscure the composition or the shot. This is helpful a lot during sports photography when you cannot wait till the rain goes away and must take the shot. Many lenses such as L-Series have a certain degree of weather proofing(Dust/Water) so its not typically an issue .

Since everyone else is pointing out how old the video is when they watched it, I guess I will to. It’s now been 10 years since this video was made. Bottom line, it is time less like light. What a lens hood does is not going to change unless the sun stops shining. Thank you very much for making this video, it is hugely informative. I never knew or thought about the peddle shape of my hood on my wide angle lens before. Now I know. Again, thank you for the video and keeping it posted.

I've been shooting for many years (began in "film". . .yes film days), and have watched many photography videos here on RUclips. . .I must say your clear, concise explanation of this topic was refreshing. Excellent presentation. I know everything you said there - but you have a good manner of explaining things, so I didn't switch off. Well, I say "I know everything you said", but I never thought of putting the lens hoods on the strap. Wholeheartedly agree on the price of lens hoods as an extra. Thank you. I'm a very amateur photographer and had got my first DSLR (Canon 700D) in April. I've recently started playing around with different types of lenses, lens filters etc but haven't a clue what most of them actually do or what purpose they have. Buying a camera for my 11 year old daughter was a big enough challenge well, we chose the Canon 250D and since neither of us knew anything about cameras we had to go online for every bit of information, such as operating the camera with all the buttons and functions and about things like Lens Hoods....Anyway, we both have looked at some of your videos and put you on the top of our list for the best and clearest explanations of some of the many common sense questions in operating her new camera. Professional, concise, and to the point. You have no idea how long I've been looking for someone who can explain things without it being confusing or cracking stupid jokes every few seconds. Love your stuffs!
Great video Phil. I am so glad to hear such an accomplished professional speaking the truth about overpriced OEM accessories. There is absolutely no reason for manufacturers to gouge loyal customers for replacement accessories. With the exception of the glass and camera bodies themselves, I now buy virtually everything from third party vendors - and recommend my students do the same. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it wasn't actually make in the same factory.
One point that wasn't really mentioned about when you don't want to use your lens hood: when you're leaving a warm area (say your car) to a cold area (outdoors), your lens hood has a tendancy to store heat in front of your lens that's coming off your front element. For telephoto shots this can really affect your contrast and blur your shots. Letting your camera cool down to the surrounding environment before putting the hood on can really help.
Very instructional video I've seen in a long time, let alone on RUclips. No crazy 2 min intro. Clear and to the point and wonderfully composed and delivered. A breath of fresh air, thank you.

I love this! Excellently explained! I've always been confused about lens hoods, and now that I've watched this I can definitely say I've seen people using them wrong. lol
The 2 different style of hoods are also required for different focusing systems. For back focusing, the petal type is the best because the focusing is inside the lens and the front lens is not rotating. For front focusing, you need a tube type because as the lens focuses, the front lens rotates and so does the hood and any filters and it is usual for shorter range front range zoom lenses.

Just now thinking about purchasing my first (in 40+ years) SLR camera. You absolutely did answer most (if not all) of the questions I had about lens hoods. The last time I handled an SLR camera, it was a Minolta 35mm film camera. I still have a couple of the lenses I had back then, but I don't hold out much hope of getting a camera (especially a digital one) to make use of them, now. At any rate, thanks for the excellent video tutorial on lens hoods. I learned what I needed to know about them for now!!
You can buy adaptors for those old lenses! I bought one a while ago and am able to use my granddad’s lenses from the 60’s. You just have to use manual focus instead of autofocus on the newer lenses

I noticed the high number of 'thumbs down' , why? What are these people thinking? You gave of your time and energy to provide a service, thanks!
If only all videos we're this helpful. Great
Super super helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make this!
TheCarPassionChannel why are you here Greg!? Need to be fixing your miata! Even though this is from two years ago😂
One of the best explanations on lens hoods in RUclips. Thank you!
that lens cap storage was genius haha
Best photography video I ever saw, I will definitely watch his other videos now, straight to the point and full of useful information. I immediately subscribed.
Wow, can't believe I'm only seeing these videos now. Never seen or heard a video be so practical and easy to understand. Telling us the hows but also the why's. Excellent video yet again Phil. Stand's the test of time.
Thanks mate. Great video.

concise and truly honest. Iam starting in photography. i buy a nikon d7000 and all the lens and accesories are really expensive, so your honest advice about buyng cheap manufactured accesories from other places. I found it honest and refreshing. Grettings from argentina!!!
"You might as well be pointing a bazooka at them" that part just killed me 😂
I thought it was just me. Good to know.
Someone or something is always looking at us--but we can't see them. But we know they are there. We can feel it.
9years and still makes a lot of sense. Thanks to the video sir
Thanks so much. Perfectly answered all the questions I had about my new lens hood (the $8 Chinese version)
Incredibly helpfull and really really well explained! Thank you! :)
Yes, thank you. I'm now all the wiser - you've literally answered all the questions I wanted to know but afraid to ask.
Thanks! Really helpful. 2013!! What a year!

Though this video is a decade old it is still relevant - the how and why of using a lens hood. To the point and great informative video. Thanks a lot Mr. Steele!
He talks about when u dont have a lens hood. JUST GO TO STARBUCKS AND GET A ZARF (THOSE THINGS THAT PROTECT YOUR HANDS FROM HOT COFFE CUPS THAT ARE CARDBOARD).
Then if you lose it, who cares. :)
It's called a sleeve...just sayin 😉
Thats brilliant. Experience from years shared in 9 minutes.
Just getting started with more serious photography instead of my cellphone and was wondering about when and how to use these. This was very helpful. Thank you.
I just stumbled on this video. Thank you for the clear and concise explanation. Bravo!
Really enjoyed your video - informational and helpful. Thank you!
Thank you. You're a great teacher.
People who give a video like this a thumbs down have no place in society.
Man you just cleared all my confusion. Best video for lens hood. Also the last hack for carrying lens hood without compromising space👌👌
Flares???!!! but the hippies told me they were spirit orbs LMAO
